Yeah, I didn’t either. Maybe they should have called it based since the settings are based off the Q menu number. But I guess they meant for it to let you know you’re making changes from the base settings of the Q number.
I see the topic of your video and I say to myself, "I know all about that." Then I watch the video anyway and you teach me so much more than I thought I knew. Thanks for the detail and all your hard work.

I've avoided the Q menu on my T4 for the past two years because I found it really confusing, even after watching this a year ago! I only realized the potential for it after trying to learn how to use a PSAM dial on my girlfriend's D700 and looking at it through the lens of the X-H2! Now I'm going to spend the weekend setting them up! Will make shooting for different platforms that I want to post jpegs to so much easier! Holy S-word! I just found this (well, RUclips found and pushed it to me). Fuji owes you BIG TIME (and I’ll check out that donation button). I’m 2+ months into my x100v, have used the Q menu and love both. Now I’ll love them both more. 🙏

I did use the Q menu before but not fully understood it. Well, until now. Thanks man! Somebody wrote in one of your other videos that this is the best channel for Fuji cameras and he is absolutely correct.
After watching your video three times I finally understood. It was the "Base" designation that was really throwing me through a loop! Thanks to you, Chris, I now feel comfortable using different FujiFilm recipes and the "Q" menu. Loved the Tesla analogy - it really helped. Cheers!
Thank you very much for these Fuji tutorial videos. The manual from the box doesn't cover many features that I learnt from your videos. It's pretty helpful, thank you.
On the point of editing the Q menu, on my X-T4, I have the working menu set to transparent background. The edit menu has a black background so it easy to know which state is being used. Also, I not sure it is obvious (although you did allude to it) that it is a good idea to keep C1 as "standard" without any custom settings so that you have somewhere you can quickly get Back to base, so to speak. I also want to add my thanks to you for the tremendous work you do putting these very informative videos together. You have made using my X-T4 a pleasure. I do read the manual which does a fair job of describing functions etc. but you bring them to life, telling us how things work together (or not, as the case may be). I got first to use Fujifilm cameras with an X100V and have this year bought a pre-owned X-T4 an d really enjoy the step up.
You can't rename the custom settings on the xt20, but this video and the channel is still great for learning how to use the xt20, because alot of the settings are similar.
Best video done so far, the Q menu is easy to use hard to explain m mate you have done what others could not, made it easy to understand, apply and use, well done
Ah, now I understand! Not sure how much I’ll use Q still, but at least now I know how to! Still not sure what to set the items to! The custom settings info was fantastic, definitely useful! Thanks for a brilliant video, as always, Chris!

OMG! I came back to this video this morning because last night I was drawing a blank on a very simple step. I have the touch screen function turned off. I wanted to use the Quick Menu to select a 2 second timer. For the life of me I could not remember how to adjust the settings once I selected an item in the Q Menu. I kept trying to use the D Pad buttons which of course moved to the next item in the menu. Damn brain burps!!! Jeez, simply using the rear command dial never occurred to me at the moment. Hope your tree situation has gotten under control. Take care Chris...
Like you I’ve shied away from the Q menu, not really knowing what I was doing. After watching your well explained video I’m going to try different menus. You’re an excellent explainer.
You can just press the command dial to punch in what you just selected with the very same dial on the Q menu. Easier than pressing OK or half shutter. Great Vid!
Outstanding! Until I watched this video I had spent a couple hours with the manual & various "Tutorials" muddling around in a confused state. Thank you
I have always heavily customized my Q menu ever since I got my X-T2. I was a beta tester of the camera (my camera serial number is my name) and it has been a delight. Most people have no idea how to do it so great job covering it. HOWEVER Fuji really missed a trick and I have messaged them nearly every year to tell them they need to do this. Here's the trick. Enable Aperture, ISO, shutter speed and BRACKETING modes to be assignable to the Q menu. WHY? I regularly shoot in the studio, indoors with flash and also outdoors with flash. I also sometimes shoot time lapse or bracket exposures. Being able to set these to various Q mode settings would make changing these EFFORTLESS. 1 flick of the Q menu and I have a camera set up to PRECISELY the job at hand. But they haven't, and so it is actually fairly useless. For a RAW shooter, or if you are shooting video, most of the Q menu is useless.
This! Hear hear! In the studio i want fixed settings with one click. Leaving everything in auto and with a single custom setting everythingset incl the withe balance.
It's not so easy to do that when you have dials for Aperture, ISO, shutter speed. (ok, you could disable them at the same time) On the other PSAM cameras it is easy to implement. Fuji already did it with the X-S10 too.
@@patrick.771 It‘s just as easy to do on e.g. the x-t3 or x-t4 with the „movie optimized control“ setting. It was what I expected, it‘s how I came across this video. I was trying to find out why the hell my shutter speed and framerate wouldn‘t be kept in my custom settings. It makes no sense and is a little disappointing.
@wfp My thoughts exactly! How the XH2 addresses this. If it doesn't, it doesn't be a deal breaker but this is convenience that makes the UX infinitely better for people like us who want to switch the camera quickly like you would do with a modern automatic car/motorcycle that can switch between economy/performance etc.
Just started to install some custom film recipes and this video has made me understood the Q menu better, and stop my confusion as to all these base and none-base labels. Thanks
I lived in Japan for a few years and saw that detail oriented culture in action. It is quite possible that they have a superior grasp on complicated set ups like this to your average North American because they are geared to it from a young age. Or maybe not.
The Q menu is a gamechanger to me, I can easily set settings when the situation demands it! The Q-menu while in playback to summon the built-in RAW Conversion is also my fave! Can't wait for that tutorial! ;)

Wished I'd seen your video first and saved some time, but it was good to know I got there any how. I still didn't understand about the red dot though and I'm grateful to find out about it now. Cheers for that Chris.
I’ve been putting away the Q menu all this time. You’re giving me the strength to get in to it! So, now I’ve got two tasks to work on - practising writing skill with Apple Pencil and figuring out the Q menu on XT4! Thanks Chris!
Setting up my Q menu on my XT3, I was having difficulties in setting my Iso as one major items that I use exclusively . I like your enthusiasm in teaching those of use that have no patience in reading the manual.Thank you.
You are such a fantastic teacher. I really appreciate all of the preparation and time that you spend on these videos. I take any opportunity I can to recommend your channel. (High praise from a former public school teacher!)
Definitely cleared up a few issues. Never really needed any of this for my landscape images but with two young children I've started to setup my camera for some quick on the fly shooting, playing with simulations and recipes and it's really helped me understand more some the customization that possible.
Ok, ok, thanks for the Q menu explanation Chris but you haven't convinced me that I need this menu at all and I think it is going to stay dormant without any love on my 2 year old xt3. My reason being that there are so many buttons on a Fuji camera that you can program with shortcuts who needs Mr Q. For example I have a button programmed to the timer, so I hit that button and boom, there it is on the screen. If I hit the Q button, then I have to find the timer button and hit that, then remember whether it is the front or back wheel to scroll to the two seconds which I mainly use. By then the sunset has gone or the waterfall has dried up ( probably a bit of an exaggeration but you get what I mean). Thanks for your effort Chris, I have watched this vlog a number of times and lost a lot of sleep thinking of Mr Q but I think Mr Q can remain dormant for another two years !
Thank you. I was just about there with the Q menu and custom settings but you've cleared up the BASE issue which I didn't quite understand and I didn't know about holding down the Q button for 2 secs. Another really useful, high quality and fun video.
I've not yet moved to Fuji for my smaller camera system.. But will understand the Q menu more when I do, and Wii come back for a refresher to my liked videos. Thank you sir...
Awesome and clear explanation. I'm embarrassed to say I reset the Xt3 twice because "BASE" had changed to "BASE C1" and I couldn't get Base back. Thank you.
Thank you - the best explanation - detail , how, and why + results that I have seen on the Q Menu. After long Covid spell of not using my camer at all for almost a yr. I had given up on comprehending this. You went the extra mile in explaining. Fast but hey I have a pause button!! I will be looking at you other videos and subscribe. Again Tks.
You realize that it's going to take watching this over and over several times and working with my camera at the same time to get all this to stick in my mind. A lot of information here. Thanks
Very informative. If I had known I would need to watch hours of video to take advantage of all the Fuji features, I would have booked a week of vacation.
This is such an awesome explanation, thank you! Understanding the "Base" designation has always been super confusing but that makes perfect sense they way you explained it.
Oh wow thank you for doing a deep dive into a feature that I bet most stay the heck away from. The UI leaves much to be desired! PS long form vids by this channel are great IMO. I don’t watch too much in my day. Quality over quantity, always.
I've had a long stint away from photography due to work changes.. anyway I'm back. I just wanted to say how much of a great job you do with you videos!. They are very informative, you're genuinely enthusiastic and overall the best channel for all my fujifilm needs. Thanks for your great work!
Suuuuuper helpful, thank you! I've figured out most of this on my own, but still get confused and am probably not making best use of these menus. This will really help me go back and set a full suit of shooting styles on XT-3.
My God they made this unnecessarily complicated. Thank goodness we have you! I guess I'm still spoiled by some of what Canon gave me back in my 80D days. I just want a Custom setting mode that I can assign independently to both photo and video and quickly cycle between my pre assigned defaults. Like if I want to shoot slomo video, I can just flick the dial and enter that custom mode. At present, it seems long winded even in the XT4. If I'm not wrong even the XS10 hasn't got this implementation down optimally yet. It just needs a firmware update though while the older models don't have the pre labelled hardware for this. I need to play around more with my XT3/XH1 to see what I can do best with this. Thank you for breaking it down for us! 💜
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you so much for your videos! Your videos are a big help to beginner photographers and to Fuji. I hope you at least get an annual gift basket from Fuji. 😀
The Q menu in the new x-e4 seems to work differently. There is no “base” designator and instead there is a “nothing selected” position where changes to set values are automatically stored, even when “auto update” is set to disable. When any changes in C1 to C7 are made, with auto update disabled, they are marked with the red dot until the camera is turned off. The next time the camera is turned on again all items are set to the stored values.
Nicely explained. wow 2 sec. hold Q to change settings Ahhhh how great. i always had a hard time to find it in the Menu! great video as always. my XT3 gains value the longer i own it and watch your videos :) keep on!

I’ve been putting away the Q menu all this time. You’re giving me the strength to get in to it! So, now I’ve got two tasks to work on - practising writing skill with Apple Pencil and figuring out the Q menu on XT4! Thanks Chris!
FINALLY I UNDERSTAND THE Q MENU 😭😭👏👏
Setting up my Q menu on my XT3, I was having difficulties in setting my Iso as one major items that I use exclusively . I like your enthusiasm in teaching those of use that have no patience in reading the manual.Thank you.
Thanks Chris!!! You are the real Fuji guy (Fuji guide).
Well, son of #@$@#$ I have been wanting to change the Q menu. People have been telling me you can't. Best Channel hands down!
👍
Omg this is mad! I had my X100f and XT10 for so long, and I knew none of this. Thank you!
Thank you. I was just about there with the Q menu and custom settings but you've cleared up the BASE issue which I didn't quite understand and I didn't know about holding down the Q button for 2 secs. Another really useful, high quality and fun video.
You are my fuji go to guy! Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
I've not yet moved to Fuji for my smaller camera system..
But will understand the Q menu more when I do, and Wii come back for a refresher to my liked videos.
Thank you sir...
I will never figure this out without this tutorial... Thank you...
Best Fuji Tutor in the world!👌
Awesome and clear explanation.
Thanks
Second time around this great walkthrough on the Custom Settings, and I now fully understand about 'bases' and varients. Many thanks for sharing 👌
Very informative. If I had known I would need to watch hours of video to take advantage of all the Fuji features, I would have booked a week of vacation.
Very good video. I use it as a refresher because after s while not shooting with the Fuji, these things can be forgotten. Thanks.
Thank you, you are very helpful , i just bought a fuji x-s10 and I have found the right answers in your video.
This is such an awesome explanation, thank you! Understanding the "Base" designation has always been super confusing but that makes perfect sense they way you explained it.
Wow, Chris you really make things easy! I am starting with my first Fujifilm camera (after Canon and Sony) Your movies are VERY helpful!!!
Thanks a lot. Up to now I didn't modify the Q menu since I found it confusing but you encouraged me to play around and hopefully benefit from it
Oh wow thank you for doing a deep dive into a feature that I bet most stay the heck away from.
Wow, the Q menu is more complicated than I realized. I have been avoiding it. Thank you, Chris!
This clarified a lot. I hope Fujifilm will take your suggestion of a better “edit indicator” in account.
Suuuuuper helpful, thank you! I've figured out most of this on my own, but still get confused and am probably not making best use of these menus. This will really help me go back and set a full suit of shooting styles on XT-3.
best fuji film videos so far .
Great video, easily the best explanation of the Q menu, cheers!
Much appreciated!
Dude , you help me soooo much , you're my master , no jokes 🙌🏼
Very helpful! The base explanation makes sense now. Thanks!
The Steven Hawkings of the XT-3.... brilliant
