Ok before this video, I didn't even know F-log existed. I didn't even know you could shoot in anything other than normal video settings. I feel like I learned A TON about video and the xt40 in general compared to every other RUclips video I have found so far. Bro! That picture of the guy praying over bread behind you is part of my childhood. My grandparents always had that over their dinner table and still do to this day. Wild to see it in a video where I was just trying to learn about some Fujifilm stuff 😜

Already got a question. You've assigned AWB-L to the button in the front. When pressing the assigned button it shows a blue icon on the screen. But when releasing the button it disappears on the screen. Is AWB-L still active when the button is released?

Thank you for this video, John! I enjoyed watching your process of color grading. I personally shoot most of my clips with manual focus, but use back button focus technique to quickly grab focus. It works! In Davinci Resolve I have created my own node trees with certain node order and saved them as Powergrades, which makes color grading very systematic and efficient, and I use F-Log in 90% of my clips. Finally, there is just something very unique in your colors and thanks to your LUTs we can all create with the same beautiful look!
Great video! I've watched a ton of tutorials on youtube related to cameras and my biggest complaint is that they either over simplify the information or are excessively technical in their explanation. Really enjoyed the balance between the two, thanks for making it easy to understand yet still explaining it thoroughly! Cheers!

@@johnstamw I bought an X100F to start to learn the menu settings. I'm swapping over from Olympus (even though it's a great camera) I want one system to learn and master.
Honestly, I often don't use an ND filter and adjust exposure with my shutter speed, but technically speaking using an ND filter to maintain the 180º shutter rule is the "correct" method.
Zebra at 70% gives great exposure for skin if you're working with close-ups, having the slightest zebras on the cheek will give perfect skin exposure depending on skin tone.

I've been shooting Fuji since the X100, but only recently started video (my X-T4 is in the mail....zero regrets allowed :D), so I'm learning all I can as fast as I can. Fuji's color science is so phenomenal, but I knew there had to be 'what is a thing that is like RAW, sort of' and thus have been watching lots of f-log videos; yours is super helpful with all the settings details. Would you recommend getting your F-log LUT aswell? Or is it just good for getting rid of the extra step with the conversion LUT?
@@johnstamw i guess it might be that in Panama since we are closer to the ecuator the light is just a bit more harsh over here. My skies are always way too bright vs the rest of the frame specially in color chrome
Kind noob to color grading, how do you make sure there's some consistency across the whole video when you colour grade? If you do micro-adjustment at like each frame?
@15:02 On the X-T3 (and probably others) if you are in manual focus on video mode and you hit the AF-L button it will autofocus (provided you have an AF lens) that will save you a step of having to switch into single focus, grab focus and then switch into manual focus.
@@johnstamw Of course, I don't know if it did that back in 2020 or not, it could have been added in a firmware update. But I just learned it myself, so I thought I'd pass it along! Great video by the way, it was very helpful!

Hi John :) and merry Christmas. I'm having trouble finding info about banding when shooting flog, I'm using the x-s10 and it doesn't have 10 bit internally. I notice people are talking about exposing +1 when in log, so maybe my under exposing si causing banding? it's bad! hope you have a tip 🙏
I just bought your Big Sur Lut for Log. Seems like a good buy. I'm new to Fuji XT-4 and Ninja V and forgot to apply the right WB so I'm stuck with blueish, magenta hell. I'm trying to warm the image up a bit but it looks a bit fake. This was shot with a Nikon 105mm f/2 DC lens. The native fuji 18-55 seems to be more correct with the WB but the Nikon has more vibe. I find it really hard to nail the WB especially when shooting Log. Don't think I used the Eterna Lut when I was filming. I won't make the same mistake next time... Haha! Hey - I dig your videos especially the wedding stuff. Have a good one!
Thanks Stefan! I do hear folks like the LUT, which is good haha! Man, sorry to hear about that WB issue, I find fuji tends to lean cool on WB (hence my luts lean warm) but hopefully you can get it sorted out. The Auto WB Lock setting is a life-saver for me. Thanks for the comment!
@@johnstamw Hey thanks for the reply! One question. When I apply your lut or the fuji ones for that matter it smashes the shadows. So I always need to raise the shadows etc. I'm using Premiere pro. It seems like I missing something. To my knowledge my exposure is good and I have have tried over expose one stop etc. I'm putting the Lut on a adjustment layer (on basic correction) and also tried in the creative panel where I can play around with the intensity which gives me a better result. Do you have any suggestions? I tried one more thing which gives me the best result and that is putting the xt4_flog_fgamut_to_flog_bt.709 on basic correction and your lut on the creative panel with some adjustment to the intensity slider. Sorry for my long post... And thanks again!
One more thing... When using XT4 luts The shadows clipping and I loose information both in the shadows and highlights compared to the log footage? I can't bring that information back with the Lut. I must be missing something important? Thx again!
@@CPSWEDEN hey stefan! typically when I hear people experiencing this issue it's a color space problem. I would ensure that your timeline, workspace, etc is set to a standard Rec709 color space. That should solve the issue for both my LUT and Fuji's.

@@johnstamw Oh okay, sounds interesting. What makes me doubt about it id that I don’t quite get the same result as you when I set the input as Rec 2020. What is very flat for you before any set up of the lut, color space, is flat to me if I set 2020. Instead, by inputting at 709 some colors appear as it does to you at 2020. Hope you understood. I would try it for yourself! You’ll find what works for you but I tend to find 8bit limited for Log recording leading to artifacting.

Considering that my x-s10 registers at 4:2:0 8 bit, it doesn't make sense to use rec. 2020 even though registering in f-log, right?
@@johnstamw Oh okay, sounds interesting. What makes me doubt about it id that I don’t quite get the same result as you when I set the input as Rec 2020. What is very flat for you before any set up of the lut, color space, is flat to me if I set 2020. Instead, by inputting at 709 some colors appear as it does to you at 2020. Hope you understood.
