A little bit of history first - Norwegian Spirit first sailed with the Hong Kong based Star Cruises in 1998 as the then new SuperStar Leo. In the year 2000, Star Cruises acquired Norwegian Cruise Lines and in 2004, transferred SuperStar Leo to NCL where she was rebranded the Norwegian Spirit. She’s a unique member of the NCL fleet, with her one and only sister ship sailing with a different cruise line as the Resorts World One.
It was only in 2013 that Norwegian Cruise Lines became a wholly owned subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings - effectively bringing ownership completely in-house.
Norwegian Spirit ticks a lot of boxes for me. She’s just shy of 76K gross tonnes, and she’s 270m long making her almost small by today’s standards. She has a passenger capacity of around 2000 at dual occupancy and a full compliment of onboard venues and amenities to suit modern cruise tastes.
Spirit was completely overhauled in 2020, with more than US$100m spent updating pretty much every corner of the ship. She was in dry dock for just over six weeks, and emerged with a raft of brand new offerings that make her one of the most luxurious cruise experiences in the NCL fleet. Unfortunately, in the weeks following her return to cruising, the world was plunged into the throws of a global pandemic.
Today, Spirit sails popular itineraries in Alaska, as well as Australia and New Zealand. I was able to join NCL Spirit for several hours during a recent turnaround day in Sydney and came away with a few thoughts.
There are many things to love about Spirit, including her range of dining venues, beautiful upmarket design, choice of staterooms, and her outer decks.
Whilst not strictly an adults only ship, there are no child-friendly or focused activities or attractions onboard, and no kids clubs.
Let me know in the comments, would you like to sail on NCL's smallest ship for an upmarket, adult, cruise experience?
Thanks for watching!

The fish carpet is genius. An elegant solution to a common problem on cruise ships.
It’s so good! I just disembarked Majestic Princess and they have a similar setup - red carpet for starboard hallways and blue for port.
SawThis feature on Norwegian Pearl in 2008,very enjoyable cruise from Miami to Seatle via Penama canal19 days
Yeah, I love the fish, but they're not on every NCL ship.😊
I sailed Norwegian Spirit in 2005, and I remember she was gorgeous. Lots of reminders of her Origins. I felt the ship was very ahead of her time and she has aged very gracefully. Glad they’ve invested so much in her. She’s an amazing ship - almost a mini Norwegian Dawn. Hope she sails for many years to come.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.
we took a cruise on Star-Leo from Sydney, dueing Sarrs virus in Asia, Her":over the top"features like Roman columns midships,& pirate -ship aft ,plus a great Atrium with internal lifts,& Aft dinning rm with huge windows was tops, gave P&O Fair princess a shake up,now she looks dowdy
The Spirit’s aft dining room windows are one of the features I enjoyed most as well.
we'll be going on her next month... first time on NCL ship😊 hope my family will have fun and enjoy this short asian trip
Awesome! Keep an on my social media accounts as I’ll be onboard in a couple of weeks!
Thanks Adrian for another extensive & very informative video🙂
Thanks John!
With NCL recently effectively cutting the pay for its stateroom attendants while its President and CEO Frank Del Rio is on a $US20million annual salary package I can't bring myself to cruise with NCL again for the time being.
The pay for the hard workers is already slim enough on all cruise lines but for NCL to cut even more from their crews' pay packets is despicable. I'd like to see Frank Del Rio do what these crew members do and on their pay. I'll never cruise with NCL. Disgraceful.
Hi Mark. I may have missed this being reported. Is this related to the change where staterooms are being serviced once daily?
@@TheCruiseandTravelGuy not so much related, but more of a complimentary efficiency measure.
Really and excellent, open and honest review. We planned our 9-21 Feb 24 Sydney to Auckland cruise back in 2022 and even more excited about it after watching your video. Thanks and will be looking for more of your reviews!! Steve
Thanks so much. Glad it was helpful! I hope you enjoy your time onboard Spirit.
Enjoyed your review, Adrian.
Thanks Brian.
We sailed on this ship when she was the superstar Leo back in 2000 on a 5 night cruise our very first cruise, leaving from Hong Kong. Absolutely fell in love with cruising.
The cruise was amazing food, accommodation, entertainment and crew excellent. Then we were back on her in 2017 as Norweigan Spirit a Mediterranean Cruise, felt like home again.
Being a smaller ship it was easy to get around. The crew were amazing as well as the food, entertainment and the easiest port disembarking. Would totally recommend this ship.
Thanks for sharing your experience, David. Sounds like a great cruise all-round.
Nice ship review Mate. Thanks
Thanks Robert!
Thank you, love the blooper reel too!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thinking about Hawaii Tahiti for September. Thanks for the great tour!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the tour. She looks like a beautiful ship, would love to cruise on her myself one day.
We are cruising Spirit in late August, from Vancouver. Looking so forward to making her acquaintance!
Should be a brilliant cruise! Enjoy.
We sailed on the Spirit in 2017 before her refurb. We fell in love with cruising on that ship, we loved the layout, the space and design, her bars and restaurants and size.. We've been on 3 other cruises since and none have matched her, in fact they've been disappointing. Hope to sail on her again one day. Hope they haven't changed her too much.
Thanks for sharing your experience Jo.
Thanks for that info! 😊
What I have found of late is the Coral Princess is supposed to be a Brisbane based Ship but it seems to be everywhere but Brisbane
Great video! Now I want to go on her!!
Let me know if you give her a try! I will do my best to sample her soon.
The ship looks wonderful! I agree with you they could tweak the itineraries to capture more local guests. My guess is that will happen should a global recession cause a reduction in the overseas guests. Being from the east coast of the US, I need find retirement prior to heading down under! See you in a few years!!
We sailed on Spirit in 2015 on a Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Venice. We had a great time and thought she was a fantastic cruise ship. I’d be keen to sail from Hawaii on her for a future repo cruise.
That sounds like an awesome cruise itinerary.
I'm going on her in March 2024 and I tacked on a Princess cruise to do a 10-day Queensland cruise after a few days I Sydney. I'm bummed that the Thermal Suite doesn't have a Thalassotherapy pool or hot tubs, especially since there are no kid zones. I know Spice H2O is adults only for most of the day, but I like the spa for a true kid-free space.
Amazing, hope you enjoy your cruises!
Haven’t sailed NCL Spirit - closest early 2000’s - big family cruise - great experience ! I’m partial to the Royal class ships - no stop and go’s with play stuff about. However, with family and destination factored - I would not discriminate 😀
Definitely a lovely size and layout... very much a shame about the colours 🫣
I’ve cruised a number of times on NCL and actually did a 22 night back to back Mediterranean cruise pre refit. I was booked on the Spirit for a Japan cruise in 2020 but sadly, the cruise had to be cancelled and we received a full refund as well as airfare compensation.
My friends are doing a cruise on the Spirit in October 2024 to South Korea and Japan.
Sounds like a fantastic cruise! Hopefully you get onboard Spirit again soon to check out her refit. I'll be onboard for an Asia cruise later this year, but before your friends. Looking forward to cruising on this beauty. Thanks for watching.
Just back from a cruise on the Spirit from AUS to NZ. + No kids, no queues getting on and off, cabin big enough, relaxed atmosphere. - Nickel and diming , staff trying to sell me unwanted stuff, felt like walking a market in Kairo. Gratuity, hate it, price the cruise properly and pay your staff a proper wage, (20-25 USD/person/day) Staff doesn’t come across as genuinely happy, you can feel them wearing a mask over what felt like despair, ship didn’t feel like a happy ship. Overpriced excursions, check on Klook or similar for better deals. Food is meh and avoid the Asian restaurant.
Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds a bit mixed ☹️
Thanks a lot for the video.
In 2010 we were on our honeymoon cruise (Mediterranean Sea) from/to Barcelona on the Spirit. We enjoyed it.
Now I will be in November/December 2023 on the new Spirit from Hawaii to French-Polynesia as solo traveller; very excited comparing solo experience from cruising on Bliss mid November 2023 (Mexican Riviera) and then on the new Spirit.
My husband will be on the Spirit from French-Polynesia to Sydney (different life schedules, being not able to cruise together in November/December this year).
We will just give kisses and hugs at pier at time of disembarkation (me) and embarkation (him). 💋 🤗
But on Christmas we will be then together in French-Polynesia. 🎄🎅
Oh wow, that sounds special!
I was an electrical engineer on her when she was known as Superstar Leo.
Before her only on cargo, tankers and RoRo vessels.
Star Cruises, owner back then of Leo, was by far the most boring job I have ever had.
Therefore I will never ever set my foot on a cruise ship ever.
Fair enough 😅
We’re scheduled to sail March 2024 and hopefully the website will update soon regarding Covid restrictions
NCL’s website probably won’t be updated for a while, but rest assured the restrictions have ended.
You know if cruises from in south east Asia depating on December move a lot? I suffer from sea sickness often and I want to take a cruise leaving taiwan and finishing in Singapore, just wondering if it moes a lot during that time
It’s hard to say unfortunately. Weather is unpredictable and the sea can become rough at any time during the year. I would suggest seeing a pharmacist or doctor ahead of time and getting some medication to bring with you in case it isn’t smooth sailing.
Sailed on her in January 2023. Our first NCL cruise. Auckland to Sydney. Not as impressive as Celebrity Eclipse. Drinks package excludes water, juice and coffee - which makes it unimpressive. Rooms are small and starting to look tired already. Most activities were line dancing or things with an up charge. Price was ridiculous considering what you can get on similar cruise itineraries in Australia. Paid $3000 for interior room, but did get upgrade for extra $150 pp to ocean view. Muster drill on promenade deck in rain was a joke. Adding airfares and hotel costs for one way itineraries to cruise charges is crazy. $$$$
Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience. Doesn't sound that great!
@@TheCruiseandTravelGuy It wasn't a horrible cruise - the Theatre shows were spectacular, just didn't live up to the hype or the cost.
@@katehewitt7324 good to know, thanks for your feedback.
I cruise on the Spirit in November to French Polynesia and Hawaii. I wasn’t impressed at all, inside stateroom was super small. Food was underwhelming in main dining room, and not enough outdoor sitting space for everyone during sea days. Never been able to get a lounge chair by the pool. It was my first cruise ever, and won’t ever cruise on the spirit again.
That doesn't sound pleasant.
Even though the NCL spirit has been refurbished, since it’s an old ship does it have plumbing problems such as blocked toilets everyday? I’ve been on one ship and this happened everyday
I haven't heard of any issues like that, but it might be worth doing some reading on recent Cruise Critic reviews to see what people have experienced.
She looks like a great ship, but I can't get onboard with those itineraries, US currency and cost 😔
The USD and itineraries really make it difficult to justify locally, but she might be a fun ship to cruise Alaska with.
I would be interested to know if they still allow people in the casinos to smoke ? This made my last sailing (on Jewel) quite unpleasant
Not while the ship sails from Australia/NZ, but I suspect they will once she transits back over to the States.
@@TheCruiseandTravelGuy I was on the last 3 cruises on Jewel when Covid hit. (We ended up in Honolulu). During that time they allowed smoking in the Casino whilst it was open! I was Not happy.
My understanding for my upcoming summer 2023 cruise on the Spirit, in Alaska, is that smoking is allowed in a separate, upstairs location of the casino. This is intended to keep the smoke away from other guests passing through the main part of the casino.
Overall the casino on Spirit is smoke free.
Guests find a separate closed gambling area within the casino dedicated for smokers.
Ok. I had to watch this a couple of times. Please tell me the shower door opens out, not pushed in like in demo
Hmmm I just went back to review my footage. It looks like it only opens inwards.
@@TheCruiseandTravelGuy that's just weird lol
@@leoniemercer7748 super weird… hopefully I’m wrong 😑
I don't know what the attraction is with NCL. Sure, this tub looks nice but with USD onboard, one-way itineraries, and nickel-and-diming at every corner after having paid a hefty fare just get to onboard, it doesn't seem an attractive cruise for me.
I've not sailed with NCL yet. Will give them a try one day. I think Spirit's size and onboard design really appealed to me, but definitely dislike the USD currency and strange itineraries.
Dammit, I sailed on this ship and now I don't recognize it.....
I see they got rid of Champaign Charlies.
They completed a massive overhaul during her dry dock. I didn’t get to see her pre re-fit, unfortunately.
y no muestras el gimnasio???? 😞
Desafortunadamente, estaba siguiendo un recorrido en barco, por lo que el tiempo era limitado y solo podía seguir al líder. Hay un gimnasio bien equipado a bordo.
