The "folk-ish" style you mention is because they wrote it like music you hear in Old-West movies. This was because Audie Murphy acted in a number of spaghetti western movies during his film career. It is a really hard hitting song, shows the desperation of the time. And it's way too memorable, I have started singing it in public more than I can count and that is not the best song to sing...

Yo Alex! Great reaction! For a little more perspective, the lyrics of the song, in many locations, are taken directly from his autobiography (which I have read and it is amazing!) and the footage you saw was from the movie in which he portrayed himself. This happened because the actor originally cast could not get it right and since Audie was serving as a technical advisor, he was convinced to take the part. The section "bright, a white light, if there be any glory in war" is actually his dedication in the front of the book to two of his fallen comrades which the band used as tribute to him. I highly suggest reading the book. The movie could be too dated as it was released in the 50's. To further show who he was, his sister signed a document to get him into the military at 17 after his mother's death and he was soon off to war. All those medals were awarded before he turned 21 years of age. This song makes me think--what was I doing at 21? Thanks for doing this one. These reactions are great!
More brilliance from Sabaton! I love their music but their lyrics are so so good. That conflict you mention makes them the speedball of music... great tensions and dynamics.
