    This song references a poem by Audie Murphy, as well as the movies he starred in. Including To Hell and Back were he played himself in the story of war exploits. Audie Murphy was awarded every medal of Heroism available, he was killed in a plane crash.
    The Crosses Grow On Anzio
    Oh, gather 'round me, comrades
    And listen while I weep;
    Of a war, a war, a war...
    where hell is six feet deep.
    Along the shore, the cannons roar.
    Oh how can a soldier sleep?
    The going's slow on Anzio
    And hell is six feet deep.
    Praise be to God for this captured sod
    That's rich where blood does seep;
    With yours and mine, like butchered swine;
    And hell is six feet deep.
    That death does wait
    There's no debate;
    No triumph will we reap
    The crosses grow on Anzio,
    Where hell is six feet deep.
    Audie Murphy

    My grandfather, his brothers, an 'uncle', great-grandfather, all were forbidden to talk about what happened when they came back. My grandfather was a prisoner of war held in Stalingrad and the reinwiesen. The 'uncle' also was a prisoner of war. He came back about nine years after the war ended. Terrible times.

    Excellent reaction to an amazing song about an amazing person. Joakim has an affinity for Audie Murphy. He has visited his grave at Arlington and they named their first tank drum riser Audie in memory of him. Murphy's son has attended a concert, giving the band a poster from the movie (starring Murphy) "To Hell and Back" which is about his WW2 service. Many of the stanzas in this song are from a poem written by Murphy after the war called "The Crosses Grow on Anzio." Audie Murphy died in a plane crash and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary, where his grave is the second most visited after President Kennedy.

    This song from Sabaton is probably one of few songs that I always choke when I try to sing along with. The history, the person, and the journey that's compressed into this song is simply overwhelming. I don't even know how to properly convey such an intense and enduring somberness; the kind that bleeds in every next sentence in the lyrics, of which chorus I've come to learn came from Audrey Murphy's own poem. It was...difficult to not reflect back after knowing more about the man behind the history.
    To capture such intensity in a song is nothing short of a masterwork.

    Nice to finally make it to a premier. This song is one of the first I ever heard by Sabaton. I'd never seen the video until now, so thanks for that. It hits differently with the extra visuals.

    Fun fact..
    Audie Murphy was the foreground figure for John Rambo in David Morell's book First blood..

    I so love your reactions to Sabaton! I wish the US would wake up to music other than the mainstream commercial fare. The stories that Sabaton shares and, in many cases, provide enough of a history lesson to ignite the desire to go learn more and deepens the appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members for each of their own countries.❤🤘🤘🤘💙

    Thanks for your excellent reaction! On your video, at 4:36 or 37, this shows Audie reacting to the death of a buddy. I don't know what it cost Audie to play himself in the film, to recreate all the trauma of battle and losing his friends. If you get a chance, Audie's autobiography To Hell and Back is worth every penny. Ironically, I learned about Audie during the covid shutdowns, when there's no place to go except the cowboy movies on Grit TV. They had Audie Murphy specials, one film right after another. Some film scripts were so-so, and his films were considered B films, often shorter than regular features. But, people loved to watch him, knowing what a fierce fighter he was. And exactly as you noted, he felt bad not only that his buddies died, but that he left many German orphans. Though he was a Medal of Honor recipient, he never thought he was special, and said the real heroes were the ones who died. Anyway, I was reading about Audie and read that a Swedish metal band made a song about him. On RUclips, I saw thousands of Europeans singing along to this song! In the US, people often don't know who Audie is. So, I thought, I must see this band live playing this song live. Before the concert, I saw the tank on stage, and got goosebumps when I saw the name "Audie" on the tank that the drummer sits on! That's how I learned about Sabaton, and now I've learned so much, especially about WW1. But, I also saved some money, and last year, traveled to Colmar France, to Holtzwihr. This little town has made a memorial to Audie and the other soldiers who liberated them from the Nazis. They have Audie's photo with writing about how he held off 6 tanks and 100 or more Germans, calling in artillery and shooting a machine gun from a burning tank. There was so much smoke that the Germans didn't know where the machine gun fire was coming from, as they never dreamed that anyone would get on a burning tank about to explode. Audie did make money in films, but he gambled away much of it. He hated Hollywood social scenes. A short time before he died in the plane crash, he'd been to Arlington National Cemetery. He deserved the Medal of Honor distinction on his headstone, but told ANC he wanted a plain headstone, like the other soldiers. After JFK, Audie's grave is the second most visited grave at Arlington, and the groundskeepers had to create a little walkway for people. Joakim, the lead singer, has a nice photo of him visiting Audie's grave, and clearly Joakim is taking Audie's memory wherever the band plays, by bringing the tank named Audie.

    THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO

    So the movie Hell and Back was the story of Audie Murphy. It was so unbelievable that anyone could do what Murphy did, they had Audie play himself in the movie.
    Another story was he was on trail for attempted murder and he was found not guilty because “if Audie Murphy wanted to kill you, you’d be dead.”

    While they do sing about war a lot, they do not glorify it as such. 1916 and Christmas Truce are somewhat cautionary tales as well.

    Some people complain Sabaton overdoes the anthemic, epic sound, but they ain’t singing about army clerks who collated and stapled above and beyond the call of duty. I friggin’ LOVE IT.
