Many of the lyrics in this song are from the poem "The Crosses Grow on Anzio" which was written by Audie Murphy after the war. The first tank drum riser (they have two) was named "Audie" to honor Murphy. Jokim Broden has visited Murphy's grave in Arlington, and Murphy's son has attended a Sabaton concert where he presented them with a poster from the movie "To Hell and Back."

Most of his movies were Westerns, but he did do war movies, including playing a version of himself. I'm sure that made his PTSD worse. He really struggled with it and even attempted the s-word. Got into drugs but managed to get out of them again.

That was murphy. He played himself in a movie also called To Hell and Back covering his experience in the war. Its a good watch.

And it was censored, by him, because there was plenty more he went through that he genuinely didn't think audiences would believe. It also reigned as one of the highlights of Universal's all time great releases until Jaws came along two decades later. Like it took a fictional giant shark to finally dethrone the *edited* version of his actual life.

    Great reaction as usual.
I agree, difficult to just rock out, Sabaton really can play havoc with your emotions and tackle difficult topics, PTSD like here or the horrors that are chemical warfare like Father and Atack of thedeadmen, even the holocaust likein Final solution and inmate 4859. but you also have No bullets fly and Ballad of Bull... about sparing lives and helping others survive the horrors of war.
by the way, Audie Murphys relatives gave Sabaton a signed poster s thanks for this song.

    THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and
    listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war where hell is
    six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh
    how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is
    six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod that
    rich with blood does seep.
With yours and mine, like butchered
swine's; and hell is six feet deep.
    That death awaits there's no debate;
    no triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is
    six feet deep.
    . . . Audie Murphy, 1948

Sabaton have a outstanding qualification of doing great songs about serious topics from our past but also about newer stuff.
    Great reaction.
I think you should make a reaction from Sabaton - 82nd all the way Live with members from Amaranthe (another swedish band).

Great reaction! During World War I there was a french soldier, Albert Severin Roche, who is very similar to Audie Murphy. Of course Sabaton made a song about him: The First Soldier.

As a veteran that suffers from PTSD, there is a reason why Vets don't talk about our experiences. Civilians can't comprehend what we go through, so there is little reason to explain our experiences to someone who didn't go through them. Vets get other Vets, which is why we can get on with another Veteran than we can, our wife.

This is the song they close their shows with. Check it out at your leisure.
I have PTSD as an ex paramedic as well as enduring a very traumatic childhood. I battle every day with it, however I go sleep knowing I "won the battle" then it happens the next day.
Since we're getting close to Armistice day Versailles would be great one to do.

Jam out or headbang to the badassness that these soldiers did, or do it in rememberance to the once who never could, soldiers or civilians, affected by war who never could enjoy peace. The music is here for your enjoyment, and for recognition.
I mean fuck some of the oldest stories Sabaton tell are over 1000 years old, i'm pretty sure they would enjoy the fact that people still danced and sang about their deeds.

Five Finger Death Punch has a song called Wrong side of Heaven, judging by your input on this one, I suspect that one will hit you in the guts with a sledgehammer.

    Hello.
    Thanks for the reaction.
I know the Sabaton's song list is large and packed with great pieces, but I was wondering if you could give "Hearts of iron" a shot.
Sitting in top 5 of my Sabaton's favourites, is often overlooked by the big tracks like Bismarck, Christmas truce, 40:1, and on.
Partially because of what it is about, so if possible, do it with the history version from Sabaton history channel. Otherwise you will have a tough time figuring out what it is about.
Thank you, have a good day!

Great reaction on this very important topic.
Hell of a great song also!
There are lots of refences to Audies own material here. To hell and back is a poem, written by audie where the text for Sabatons text is mostly taken from.
    A homage to Audie.
Sabaton started of in 1999 and this video was before Hannes (Floors husband) and Tommy Johansson joined the band.
Tommy is now replaced with the old guitarist Thobbe Englund that actually plays in this video.

@@henrikvidin yes, and they had Robban Bach on the Swedish tour, and after he quit, Snowy Shaw came to the rescue and then they got Hannes😉🤘
Snowy was Hannes' teacher, introduced him to Evergrey.
Hannes was Snowy's drumtec on some Sabaton shows and after that Hannes joined the band as a member 🤘

Now that you have done the video, it would be a good idea to watch the Sabaton History episode about this song. To cope with the ptss he started Poetry. The lyrics of this song are partly derived from one of his most famous poems ‘To hell and back’. Sabaton has another great song about his heroic deeds called: 82nd all the way. Worth a reaction as well.
