I highly recommend the animated video to Night Witches, also a Yarn Hub production. both no bullets fly and Night witches summon onion ninjas almost every time.
Franz Stiegler served in North Africa as a pilot earlier in the war. If I recall correctly his commander at the time had told his pilots that if he ever saw them shooting at an enemy pilot hanging from a parachute he would personally execute them when they came back. Stiegler said that he saw the wreck of the B-17 as the crews ”parachute” and recognised that it was so badly damaged that neither the plane nor the crew were posing a threat and thus felt it would’ve been dishonorable to shoot them down, so he instead escorted them out

On the day Charlie passed, I would imagine that the harrowing howl of a BF-109 could be heard in the distance. Franz had come to bring him home. Horrido.
I've seen some people who say Stigler's behavior is a treason. Maybe. But he made such a humane and honorable decision in an era of madness and violence. Sometimes, people say that "Humanity and morality is useless in war, so we must abandon such traits." But who save our lives in desperate situation are people who didn't abandon such traits. I hope every person on this planet to understand and never underestimate the power of ideal things such as humanity, mercy, honor, and etc.
Great reaction!🤘 This is what Sabaton does. Their songs are powerful and they tell important stories. I highly recommend "Seven pillars of wisdom" (official music video) and "En livstid i krig" (=A lifetime of war. Live from the Great Tour, Gothenburg, 2020. The song is in Swedish, so CC on).
respect for the enemy is REQUIRED, otherwise you will under estimate their capability and defeat WILL follow (if in doub tread up on the Battle of Route Coloniale 4). even an untrained child with a gun can kill you if scared or angry enough, now make that hundreds of half trained soldiers/guerrilla/religious or political fanatics... and you have a BIG problem.
there is a book online called a Higher Call by Adam Makos. It's about the life of Hans and about what led up to the incident and what happened to him afterwards. It's an extremely good read and show's a lot of the lost humanity which history tends to overlook.
Keep an eye on your comments for this video, you never know who might make an appearance, As for suggestions i suggest "En Livstid I krig" Live in Gothernberg oh and subtitles on its in Swedish
I have trouble telling people about this event because I get choked up when I get to the point that Franz decided that they weren't a threat any more, and that plane was no longer a weapon, but a life boat.
@@purplebutterflywithabrokenwing Yup. You let it slip. I will keep it secret if you prefer. I could also erase my comment. let me know. I understand. 🌹🌹
There so many more things to say about this incident. 1/ I believe there was a standing order to not spare any plane or even pilot in a parachute. If anyone had reported the incident Stigler would most likely have been court martialed and shot 2/ Stigler stayed with the B-17 to keep the AA gunners from shooting it down, not leaving it until they got to the coast. He first wanted them to land but they refused, he then wanted them to fly to Sweden as it was closer than Britain, but they didnt understand what he meant and continued to fly towards Britain 3/ When fighting in Africa, Stigler was told by his commander, Gustav Rödel, that if you follow this order to shoot down helpless enemies I will shoot you myself. You will not follow this order to save the enemy but to save your soul because you will never forgive yourself. Stigler has said that he remembered this when he was thinking about shooting down the bomber 4/ Brown told his commander when he was debriefed and to an intelligence officer. However he was ordered not to tell anyone and the whole thing was kept secret. There was two reasons for this, one was that they didnt want other bomber crews to think that the next german fighter would spare them, and the other reason was they they didnt want the enemy to be portrayed in a humane way. 5/ Everyone in the B-17, except the initially killed gunner survived the war, with the last member dying in 2016 6/ The reason Stigler didnt fire in the first place was that he saw that the tail gunner machineguns were pointing upwards, showing no one was using them. When he came closer he saw the dead tailgunner and when he got closer he saw that the mid section gunners were either injured or trying to save other wounded crew members. 7/ Stigler wasnt part of the fighters that shot at the plane, they saw the plane fall and thought they had shot it down. Stigler was actually on the ground when the plane flew by having just come back from another mission 8/ Brown searched German records for 4 years but found no mention of the incident, for obvious reasons because Stigler never reported it. It was first when he put an ad in a german flying magazine that Stigler responded To me Stigler was a true hero and human who was in a war, but was still able to feel mercy
When Franz Stigler met Charlie Brown in the Airborne reunion, especially when he said "It Wasn't Easy", the WW2 Airborne veterans gave Franz an uneasy welcome and called him a Nazi. Charlie Brown also explained that he waited so many years to investigate looking for Franz because if Nazi Germany or United States received word about Franz saving Charlie Brown, Franz would have been in Court-martial and Executed. Franz passed away in the year 2008 with Charlie Brown passing away a few months later.
Franz didn't understand before the reunion how what he did had a big impact on the men who where in rhe pub because one of the mens wives said u did what u did saved them and they where able to have kids and then have grandchildren because of you so if he had shot down the pub they wouldn't have had kids and no grandchildren
The whole story of the two men was compiled in a book by Adam Markos and his co-author Larry Alexander. It is entitled "A Higher Call" and describes not only this one flight, but the lives of the two pilots before, during and after the war.

Some interesting facts about the lryics, when it says "Said goodbye to the cross he deserves", had steigler shot them down he would've had enough points to earn the Knights Iron Cross and when you see steigler point he was actually trying to motion for them to turn towards neutral sweeden however they misunderstood and ignored it continuing on towards the coast where Steigler was forced to fly escort as the only way over the channel in the section they were flying was over the Atlantic wall where they wouldve been easy targets for Flak emplacements flying that low and if you see the actual picture of the B-17 after it had landed, it truly is a miracle that thing didnt crash before making back considering the tail section alone was barely hanging on
