    The Iron Cross is a German thing. Not a bad guy from Germany thing.
    The Iron Cross predates That whole mess by a lot.

    • @patrickdasp5609
      @patrickdasp5609 6 месяцев назад +61

      Wanted to write just that.
      The Iron Cross was even during the Nazi an honor badge for soldiers.
      And even today the Iron Cross is a sign on aircrafts and ground vehicles (like tanks) of the Bundeswehr and many variants are on badges.

      More specifically it was a Prussian thing, derived from the insignia of Teutonic Knights.

      One of the things I like about Sabaton is that they don't seem to discriminate based on which army a soldier fought for. They'll sing about a hero's honour, courage, or compassion even if he's on the side that modern history deems the "bad guys".

    • @MUETZE198
      @MUETZE198 6 месяцев назад +12

      The iron cross is still in use by germany's armed forces today.

    • @FuFightersStudio
      @FuFightersStudio 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@AngelWedge that's cause history doesn't deem anyone "bad guys" - it just speaks about facts. The only reason we view some of the more modern history in this way is cause we bring in our biases (and mind you, nothing wrong with that but this is the right way to show history - letting the facts speak for themselves and the audience draw their own opinions from it)
      To give an example - if Roman Empire wasn't a thing from 1500 years ago, we would talk about them being the bad guys happily genociding tribes that fought against them. But since its so long ago, nobody thinks that way.

    @BlackPegasusRaps, the Wright brothers were the first to fly a POWERED aircraft in 1903. The first flight of an airplane/glider was carried out by Otto Lilienthal in 1893. None of them were the inventors of it but rather the first to fly successfully. Many rich people at the time tinkered arround with glider or motorplanes.

    My favourite line in this song is probably "from the horseback to the skies" … it passes you by until you really think about it. But then it kind of drives home how new planes really were; there wasn't a real air force yet, so they figured that controlling an aircraft is similar to riding a horse and offered the job to the best cavalry guys.
    It's those little bits of history that don't make sense until you look it up.
    Have you seen the Sabaton history videos? They've got some that are like deep dives into the history behind their songs.

    Whenever I watch a Sabaton reaction video I keep seeing comments of doing "Christmas Truce" or "1916" and I just keep thinking: "Those are the songs you do if you want to cry"
    Because there are plenty of Sabaton songs that tell the awesome tale of someone's exploits in these wars and events, and then there are the songs that really drive home how horrible war really is.

    Some facts about the song and the person:
    - "Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies" is as true as it sounds. Richtohfen began his military career as part of a calvary detachment.
    - "Bloody April" was nicknamed by the British because of how many planes they lost that month (nearly 300). Out of that number, Jasta 11 (the squad led by the Red Baron and is also known as The Flying Circus) shot down 89 of them. Of the 89 shot down, Richtohfen shot down 22 of them by himself (even downing 4 in one day).
    - Although many people picture him with the Fokker Triplane, he only did a fraction of his kills in the Triplane. The bulk of them he got while still flying a Biplane.
    - He painted his plane bright red so that, according to him, his squad always knew where he was at all times. His squad also adopted the bright color scheme on their planes (hence nicknamed The Flying Circus). It helped immensely to distinguish them from enemy and friendly planes alike, since there was always a lot of friendly fire in the skies.
    - Richtohfen is actually born of Prussian nobility, so he's a noble by all accounts.

    we are here for every Sabaton reaction. If you dont get recommendations you can literally pick any song and you'll love it. They sing about the 300 Spartans, the Samurai in Shiroyama, they have lots of songs about WW1 and WW2, and everything in between. Their first album wasn't history based, but every other album is. So pick one sit back and enjoy the ride.

    Sabaton's History Channel, where their historian goes into depth about the songs, is just *awesome.* (And they let him be in some of their music videos, he was so excited.) They do more than the world wars, too--one of their albums deals with the events of the 30 years' war, where Sweden played a big role (their king at the time was Protestant, and so he was big on taking the fight to the Catholic Hapsburg rulers)
    You definitely need to check out their recent cover of Motorhead's 1916 (they did it as a tribute to Lenny, and his band members are in the video), and The Christmas Truce--Floor Jansen sings the outro music on that one.
    Their lead guitarist, Tommy (the big blond dude with the baby face, poor guy) also has an INCREDIBLE voice--he did a cover of Phantom of the Opera. He sang both parts. And he hit the high note. It was impressive as heck.

    Night Witches goes hard, definitely one of their best. Other great ones I suggest "The Christmas Truce," "Steel Commanders," and "Father." Then one awesome one they don't play live anymore because it creep them out seeing people rocking to it, but is a must watch "Final Solution."

    He was credited with 80 victories, but it's probable he had several more that were unconfirmed likely putting his total around 100 or more.
    The Red Baron was respected by the Allied forces as much as he was feared, so much that when he was ultimately killed his enemies arranged a full military funeral and squadrons all over France sent wreaths, one of which read "To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe".
    He died April 21, 1918 age 25.

    One interesting thing about the Red Baron he never shot down anyone with the intention of killing the pilot just the plain he viewed it as a sport he was an actual hero also I do hope people understand Germany was not evil in world war I

    In the earliest days of aerial combat during ww1 the pilots were dogfighting with hand held pistols and not mounted machine guns.
    A cool fact about the Red Baron, Manfred Von Richthofen, is that after he was shot down by the Entente (allied) forces he was given a military funeral with honours, with Entente officers and lower ranks acting as pallbearers and giving a fired salute. One of the memorial wreaths laid at his grave had "To our gallant and worthy foe" written on it. He was surprisingly well respected by his enemies.

    Fun fact! Rote commissioned a small silver cup from a jeweler for every kill he scored. His collection of those capped off at 60 though because there literally was not enough silver available in all of Germany by that point to continue it

    80 confirmed kills over 20 months, and 21 of those were in April of 1917. I looked that up while I listened to the two of you talk after than number was mentioned in the song.
    From my understanding, initially the planes were only used for scouting until the pilots started shooting at each other with their service sidearms.

    If your looking at more of Sabatons music look to se if there is a music video or animated version of it first as those will give abit of context information in the video itself and the animated videos will have a short history story before and after the video itself. Sabaton wants ppl to look/react to these stuff so your not gonna get a claim on the videos.
