Thank you to all, I am truly honored and humbled. Of course Nik, you make it all possible and our adventures are never dull! Rob, without you we couldn't have done it, and I didn't realize the friendship that we would develop as a result. And thank you all for the kind, supportive comments. Retired professors don't normally do these kinds of things, so the 240 Volvo, my old APROF license plate, crazy stickers and a tweed sport coat kind of fit the role.
We should do more fun stuff!
Proud to call you guys my friends!
Great story guys, glad to say i can call you guys Friends... Good times
This was one of the most memorable cannonball experiences for me. Having just lost my dad a few months prior it was great to be on a team with Nik and Chuck and be a part of their father son dream. We had so much fun and have remained friends. I wonder what they will drag me into next lol.
You sir made the dream a reality, and I love ya for it. I actually mentioned the bit about your dad but it’s somewhere on the edit room floor I suppose (can’t fit it all). Appreciate your friendship and yes, always more adventures to come!
The trip was probably a great time, but having their Musketball memories for the rest of their lives is the true gift. Great story.
This right here, Yes!!!
This was one of the best episodes I've watched
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the story!
The Musketball will forever be one of the best things I've ever done. Such an amazing event where I got to meet Nik, the Professor, and so many others.
That’s right, that’s where we first met in person!
Yes, we got to make a number of good friends like yourself!
This has to be one of the best stories that has been told on this channel. Thank you guys for sharing and I as a father this is heartwarming and from a son's perspective a greatest moment with your dad!
Thank you, it was so great for us to do this!
Agree. A really great story
Thank you @Xman1976, hope it encourages you to make great memories with your kids!
Thank you for this. My dad is 82 and like many of us, got my love of cars from him. Love and cherish them every second you are able.
Thank you for watching - I completely agree! I just hope my kids do cool things like this with me some day 😂
One of the best stories here, no question about it!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it, it was an amazing adventure!
Its nice to hear a Volvo made that trip!
She freaking owned that trip 😂
@@nikkrueger5734 i bet! We have a fleet of those things!
Nothing better than a father and son have fun together. I’m so happy for you guys!
Thank you, we had a blast!
Very cool to do it with your father. Definitely memories both of you will cherish forever. Awesome story!
Agree, thanks!
Hey guys I'm 63 years old and I can remember in the 70 and 80 my dad had fast cars we lived in rural Florida and I can remember on a two-lane road he would open it up 120 + that's definitely where I got the bug. My first car was a 76 Pontiac Trans Am we did a intake new carburetor and headers on that car and we drove it fast some of my best memories I sure miss my dad
Sounds like you may be due a special road trip in his honor. Dads make great car-friends!
@@nikkrueger5734 unfortunately I lost my dad about 2 and 1/2 years ago I definitely should make a road trip in his honor
@@robertjohnson4784 I'm sorry you weren't able to make it happen but I'd agree completely that a trip (one that would be meaningful for you and him) you be a great way to pay some tribute. Its really special when you can make memories with someone even after they are gone.
What a great story! Congratulations on making the kind of memories that every car guy dreams about! Well done!
Thank you, we really enjoyed it, very grateful!
Taking my dad on rides in my car is always fun!
Try one for 2800 miles! 😂
Nik and Chuck are great guys been fortunate to have done events with them both of them #fraterityoflunatics #cannonball
Thanks buddy!
I’m happy you guys had a great run and now you have the memories to go with it. And I also read the article in Car and Driver when I was 16 and decided that somehow I would try to make the next run if I could get things together. Eventually I would make the run in 79 just not the whole way.
Thanks for the nice picture of me and your dad, it was a pleasure meeting you guys.
John, him meeting you was on par with if my daughter met Taylor Swift. He was so excited to meet and talk with an actual original Cannonballer. You made a perfect Grand Marshall too!
John, meeting you and having an opportunity to chat before we took off was awesome! Thank you!
Great story, glad you and your Dad got to have that experience together!
Thank you, it was a great adventure!
White Volvo 240 was my first car
Great story, well told.
I quite literally have just had the same experience. Am 17 but work a lot of hours in between school. Last month I finally bought what I'd been saving up for a long time, a 2013 Megane RS Trophy. Not many of them in NZ and this one was in great nick, high spec, and well priced so I decided to bite the bullet and fly up to Auckland. We are in Wanaka, near the bottom of the south island and Auckland is near the top of the North Island. Over a weekend we did a 1600km epic between me and dad (at all of my costs though!) + a ferry between islands. Best trip Ill ever do loved every minute, reminds me of this story because we were taking the back roads and fanging it on the quite ones, egging each other on. But also we have this 1989 Nissan Bluebird (now a paddock car), similar to the volvo we maxed that at 180 kmh heading down to the track (on which I got it up on 3 wheels later on). So much of the small details in this story are so similar to ours, love it!
Edit, hope to do something similar race wise in the future once I have more money - targa road rally hopefully. Plans to do Lemons if I can get a team together.
What a fantastic story, so glad you were able to do that. Here’s to many more with your dad!
Great story! You'll have increasingly better "Best trip" in your future, great to look forward to in making memories.
Amazing story! Such an awesome experience to share with a gearhead father,.
Thanks for watching, it was a great experience to do it as a father son team!
This is my favorite Musketball story by a big margin!
We sure had fun chasing you guys in the Yaris!
Jeff, great to meet you and become friends!
Thank you 4 this great story,,, ❤
Thanks for enjoying!
What an awesome story and memories...
Thanks it really was an unforgettable adventure!
This is the content I'm here for! Best episode so far!
Awesome, thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
great father son story!
I read the story, but in 1981, before the movie came out. I was 10, but my dad knew the story and my grandfather had the magazine. And I was only allowed to read it at my grandpa's house.
That’s funny how everyone reneges their intro to Cannonball!
Amazing story
Thanks!
What an awesome story!
Thank you, we enjoyed the adventure, glad you enjoyed hearing about it!
This is one of my favorite things about cars how I brings families together and make everlasting memories great episode
Agreed!
4:31 father son story. My Old Man - even tho an Aussie was in same 1958-62 class at Konstfakt industrial design Stockholm with bloje who designed that famous centre console. He told me that teaching ne to drive in 240. That motor in Volvo is SO famously overengineered it has hidden depths and helped u best the fragile Audi lol.
Finished without a water pump. Legendary Volvo lol
That thing is a tank!
@@nikkrueger5734 I’ve got 3 currently haha. My daily is at 273k miles just refreshed everything
Awesome content. Never disappointed when this guy is in the thumbnail. Shout out to pops too!
Great story! Really enjoyed this one :)
Thank you!
I would love to do this with my loved ones
Do it! Trust me, it’s worth every second!
this is awesome
Thanks!
Like the old professor I too remember reading Brock Yates original article while in college. I've wanted to do a Cannonball as well for over fifty years. I think they need a senior Cannonball race!
Thank you for watching, we really enjoyed getting to do this together. You should absolutely go do a run!
Senior Cannonball Race! Hmmm, puts us as team leaders, each team allowed one non-senior. Vehicle age and HP limits.....John Ficarra (not a senior yet, but when he is, he won't slow up a bit) could pull this off!
@@chuckkrueger5537you'd need a prefix moniker which suggests greater age than even musket ball - the history of the Arquebus may provide some inspiration. Musket is a type of Arquebus which began common parlance for hand cannon. Though musket is a form thereof the size of projectile - measured in Spanish as an 'Onza' - was below one Onza in Arquebus. But it's the crossbow and arrow which precedes that I suppose.
Guess "The Rantallion Run " is outa the question! ?
"Hand Cannon Ball Run" ?!
😂😅
That's a cool dad
He really is actually!
Hello from New Glarus Wisconsin
Hey! I grew up in Sun Prairie and I’ve got a $2 bill from Sportsman’s in my wallet!
@@nikkrueger5734 That is awesome! The VINwiki family is strong in Wisconsin!
@@RobsNeighborwith weather like today, gotta have things like this to look forward to 😂
@@nikkrueger5734 Absolutely this week has been brutal!
What Podcast? I want to hear the whole story.
9:36 "We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold" Hunter S Thompson's opening line to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I know Cannonball was only thing consumed here but Barstow lol
I've blown a belt and overheated that 240 engine with my dad in Australia in Summer lol in 1980s
If there is another musketball, I'd do anything to join :D
It really was a blast!
@@nikkrueger5734 I can only imagine!!! 🤩 I've got some low speed runs coming up I cant wait!
I just bought a car, everything went as expected. I had a thought to.look at the Vin and it might be faked. It also looks like.a front end collisiom was hidden where the crunple.points were welded back together. I have pictures. The vin spacing is clearly atypical. What are the repercussions?
So tired of people abusing public highways as a race track. If you want to race, find a track.
I have very mixed feelings, as much as I want to say “cry about it”, I agree. But that doesn’t mean I won’t speed on public roads, and other people will too. I guess the best we can do is educate on how to be safe at speed. Hope you have a good one 🙏
Agh dang that was my first car 1983 Volvo 240gl! Always wanted to find, motor swap one and cannonball that shoebox! Bravo gentleman 👏 🙌 👍
Thank you! I think a 240 with a motor swap deserves a shot at a run … 😏
