I just broke my right slider while replacing the clear backplate so i ordered new ones from amazon and once the delivery arrived i will use this video as a guide.
Sorry to hear about the break! I hope it helps! Good luck on your repair and let me know if you need any help
Most repair guys on youtube don't show the hard parts. They skip right through them. At least you showed how much of a PITA that ribbon cable really is......Thanks for tutorial mine has been broken for so long..It's our 3rd switch. because of this video Im ordering my side rail today. you rock
Awesome! I hope you get it fixed. I’ve had to do this a few times now. The side screws hold less and less each time. Appreciate the comment!
Thank you, gamer dad! I've had my Switch, for a few years and the rails finally gave out. I'm glad I saw your vid, because I'm a single mom, and we're too poor, to get a new one. I have to say, though, I'm shocked that your kids broke yours....multiple times. My 7 year old son hasn't broken ours once, because he knows what I'll do to him, if he does. He knows the Switch is irreplaceable. Plus, I make him work his ass off, to replace anything he does break. He learned not to break things, real quick. Well, anyway, here's a like and a subscription.
This is a wonderful tutorial. You just save me from buying a new Nintendo switch which the first models are now rare.
why would you want the first model over the new one?

I've been trying to figure out what slide thing was called and even researched about it. Then I finally found it! Now Imma order the part to fix my slide rail. Thanks so much for the video!
was it easy to fix
You saved me from having to buy a new switch! Tutorial was amazingly easy and confidence building. Ty
Just wanted to say thanks Man U really helped me out I was able to fix my switch
Thank you! My sons did same thing and this tutorial helped me fix it. You are the man!
Im so glad you made this. After my son broke the siderail i thought it was doomed to the tv. Thank you thank you thank you!
The only thing I would add is that you have to disconnect the battery before disconnecting and connecting
Almost bought a pair of new joy con and thank god for your video I bought only the right rail and the screwdrivers, AND IT WORKED!!!!!
Thanks for the video, my nephew just dropped his and broke and has been in tears, but it looks like i may be able to fix it. thanks for the details!
Bummer! Sorry to hear that. It’s not so bad of a repair. Any questions, feel free to reach out.
This just happened and I was afraid it was broken forever! Thank you. Doing this tomorrow.
Thanks alot I gotta fix my son switch u saved me alot of money very great video !
Thanks for the comment! We’ve had to fix ours a few times. One of my boys jumps around way to much while playing and it just puts too much stress on the rails. It was intimidating the first time I fixed it, but not too bad anymore. Good luck with the repair!
I broke my side rail but the inside of the joycon is stuck onto the actual switch, I don’t any repair tools. What do i do?
Thank you! you’ve done a great service to the switch owner community!
My parts are coming on March 8 when they come I’m going to use this video as a step by step guide nice vid by the way
Thanks for the comment! If you have any questions, I try to keep up with the comments. Good luck!
@@BrickBuildingKids Thanks
@@BrickBuildingKids thank you so much my parts came in and now my switch is fixed god bless you 🙏🙏
That is awesome!!! Well done, glad we could help!
Thanks for the video, had no idea it was much easier than replacing an analog which I broke 3 analogs + 2 L buttons (which needs solder and am no where near that level) but got it eventually and managed to be more careful implementing the analog replacements.
THANK YOU SO MUCHH,I broke my slider and ima use this video to help me replace it l, thank you so much, and nice camera, it’s very clear 😁
Thanks! I appreciate you watching and commenting! If you need help or get stuck on your repair, drop a comment and I’ll try to help. Have a good one!
I want to thank you this video was very helpful in replacing a slide for my son's switch.
Hey! Thank you so much for the comment. Glad it helped!
My side rail isn’t broken off but my left joy con won’t connect to the switch in handheld mode so I don’t know if I need to replace that completely
Thanks now all I have to do is buy wait and fix your the best :D
Man this videos came in clutch just in time for the holidays
Glad to hear that! I had to do ours again. It’s a pretty easy repair if you are comfortable taking the switch apart. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you sooo much you save me for buying new Nintendo switch
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tutorial. Worked like a charm here.
Question!!! My right Joycon works just fine on one Switch but not on another. Do you think if I replace the right rail on the one that does not work this problem could be fixed?
Sorry for the late reply, but yes
Just fixed my kids switch 🔥 thanks bbk
Interesting. I’ll be doing this in a week. Waiting for new parts. Thank you.
Good luck! It’s not so bad. It sure beats buying a new console too.
Quick question...... do you(or should you) disconnect the battery before you start to repair the rail?
this is wonderful now i can fix my nintendo switch for my children
So, thank you this actually helped and I repaired my right slider and it’s working, but now my sd card reader isn’t working lol.
After watching this again, I think I might have unplugged my card reader by accident and I must have missed it like an oaf. I’ll make sure it’s connected properly and try again.
I’ve had to do that before as well! Glad it helped fix your slider!
I did everything but it doesn't work for me until I ordered everything Thank you very much for your effort
I did the opposite. I broke the connecting piece of the joycon in the switch
I need to replace the left rail as it no longer charges or detects the joycon when sliding it on, I'm suprised how simple a repair it is, I was just about ready to send it to Nintendo.
Did this actually work….I dropped mine and it wouldn’t connet when I slides it in…is that what happened to you?
My kids have sat on the switch and broken the rails. It’s not a bad repair, just take your time pulling parts off and putting them back on. We’ve had to do this for a few consoles.
Thanks for the video I fixed my switch
Thanks for you video! I changed both rails with your help :)
Awesomeness! Glad it helped!
I really need to know how to repair the OTHER side though.. it looks so different, this doesn’t really help me for replacing the left joycon console slider…
May I ask what i should do of the place where the rails attach is broken (if you remove the rail, you can see part it attaches to with nails) because mine has some mild damage to it. You would be a lifesaver if you could tell me how to fix it
I had to use some glue to keep mine attached when the bolts got to stripped. The screws got really stripped so the rail wouldn’t hold in place. You can get a replacement frame, but that is a lot of work.
@@BrickBuildingKids if I were to take it to a repair shop, could they possibly fix it?
@BenneGamez they might do the same thing. The plastic is likely broken so the screws won’t tighten.
@@BrickBuildingKids alright, thanks a lot man
Nooo my problem is that the slider broke off but it is still on the nintendo pls help me I don't know how to it's seriously split in half and it's stuck on
Let me know if you still need help because that happened to me and I fixed it
@@untitledrecordz7906 please help me the same thing happened to me, my left joy on broke off of my switch and the joycon connector or slider is stuck on the left side of my Nintendo switch! Please respond quickly! I have had my switch for 2 years now and this is my 1st problem.
Just today out of nowhere my left switch joycon died. I was using it fine yesterday. Come to find I can't charge the controller... I have tried charging it by other means and its still completely dead. However when I connect the working right joycon into the left port, it short circuits and cuts off completely as soon as the controller fully connects and "snaps" into place on the left rail. so is this an issue with the switch rail, the joycon or both?
hey I know i’m kinda late to this but My friend sat on my switch and broke the right red side railing. I didn’t know it at the time so i pulled it apart but it ripped some of the golden paneling. It’s not the wobbling that’s worries me its that itll pick up the controller but it doesn’t charge it.
Yeah, it won’t charge it anymore. That’s the ribbon that connects the rail to the switch.
You saved a lot of switches
The only screws younneed to remove the back shell of the switch On the sides of the rails are the middle screws On either end left and right ends
The left rail ribbon seems to be woven under another piece. How do I change that one?
My switch charge the right joycon but doesn’t attached to the console, just like it’s outside. You you think it may fix it? I already try with another right joycon and it’s same. Thanks
Hello, i been replacing the right rale ribbon several times , and still i can't make it work, what else do you think i can do...
Thank you bro.
You are the best 👍.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you liked it!
@Brick Building Kids
I watched the entire video to see if you did ONE CRUCIAL step, and you didn't.
The Orange-Gray "goop" between that heatshield/heat spreader (the massive aluminum backplate behind the backplate) and the heatpipe/heatsink on the mainboard HAS TO BE REPLACED when you do this type of service!
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is the BEST thermal compound that you can use to replace it that's not conductive, and likely would result in better temps on your switch 'out of the gate' just by swapping it for the stock thermal paste.
To do this here's what you need:
90% (or higher) Isopropyl Alcohol. Do NOT use lower formula mixes with more water because..well..water, right?!? 90% will dry nearly instantly.
q-tips, but a microfiber cloth, and toothpicks are a good option too since they don't leave lint, and can get into the nooks and crannys that a q-tip simply can't.
Thermal Paste - ANY thermal paste will work, and probably work better; but it HAS to be non-conductive, and CANNOT be a gallium mix as it'll eat aluminum. (Arctic MX-2/4/5 Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut are your best options.)
Dab the q-tip or microfiber in the alcohol, don't saturate it (although it won't hurt if you do. That's why we're using 90% or higher), just get "enough" on there to aid in breaking down the TIM, and use the toothpick to scrape off some of the harder bits.
Wipe the alcohol soaked q-tip, or microfiber cloth across the Thermal compound with a "common sense" amount of pressure - you're trying to take it off, and clean the surface, use the hardness of the compound as a guide for how much pressure you need.)
Once it's all nice and clean apply a LIBERAL amount f thermal paste (on CPU's in computers we go by the "pea-sized amount is enough" method, but due to AMD Ryzen chips being "chiplet" based systems on the substrate this isn't ideal anymore. Tegra's are CPU/GPU SOC so they're not "chiplet based" systems on a chip, but they're close. use common sense when applying it. A good sized drop right on the middle of the heatpipe (the copper tube with the pinch at the end) is right were you want it. Once the heatspreader's reapplied it's clamping force once torqued into place will do the spreading for you.
You're done. Since the paste isn't conductive you don't need to worry about "overdoing it". It'll spread as far as it needs to and honestly the more you have the better since there's a MASSIVE aluminum heatplate, and plenty of room for heat to be generated in this system BESIDES the SOC.
If you re-use old thermal paste - especially once it's hardened like this then it's essentially not even there. The entire purpose behind TIM (Thermal Interface Material) is EXACTLY what it sounds like. It's an interface between the heat SOURCE, and the heat DISSIPATOR. If you use old paste it will have air gaps, and those air gaps will trap heat, and CAN cause your switch to freeze, stutter, overheat, and artifact (artifacting is worst case scenario because at that point your entire Switch is dead - and believe me, you'll know when it happens because graphical oddities will show up EVERYWHERE)
I hope this helps your viewers, and yourself as well, and am more than happy to answer any questions when I can (albeit potentially slow as I'm a father of two boys aged 4/2 respectively as of writing this, and manage a group on Facebook with more than 50k Computer Enthusiasts within it so we get a bit busy. Plus, I like playing my switch and spending time with my wife when I'm not working.)
Thanks for the tutorial! I replaced my rail and the joycon still isn’t being detected. I’ve tried with multiple joycons so i know it has to be something with the console. The joycons will charge if they are plugged onto the switch but will still not be recognized. Is anyone else having this issue/know how to resolve it?
I know I'm late but did you fix the problem? Just asking because I had the same problem.
@@spacemx._ no i didn’t :(. I ended up submitting a repair through Nintendo and they had to send me a brand new switch because they couldn’t fix it either!
I pretty much have the same issue.
I have the same problem right now. Worst is i cant even charge the joycons.
Uh my switch rail isn’t broken, but dented. Any suggestions?
replying because i’m pretty sure i have the same issue, and i want to see the answer too lmao
You could use this video to just replace them
I just saw this, sorry for no reply depends on how dented. If you try to bend it back in place to much, you could end up stripping those screw that hold it on to the console. If it’s just the inner rails that the joy con slides into, pliers might help. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Hello, my left side rail is not working. Amazon link you attached says right side and left, will it still work for the left?
I followed your tutorial, it’s the exact same side as your vid, it worked, however..
When attaching joycon, screen shows that it clicks in, and is charging like normal, but will not connect to handhold mode. Tried syncing and no luck. I hope that made sense!
Please help?
Yeah but I have this issue but with the right joycon and there is a plastic part sticking out of the shell right beside the third arrow facing down on the slider track on the joycon, I had it them attached to the nintendo and then I dropped it and then the track started to dislodge from the joycon so I tried pushing it back in, but because I did that there is now that plastic part that won’t move and is jammed between the inside and outside of the joycon so it won’t allow me to put it back on to the switch
I noticed left joycon keeps displaying the animation that it’s been removed… & I have to fully remove & reconnect…. Do you think the issue is with Joy-Con or the slider rail on switch body?
Any vids showing the left rail being replaced?
Is this the same process for the oled model?
Damn they did a number on it lol. But thanks for the teardown of how to replace them.
I wish you would have shown how to replace both sliders, not just the left one.
My joy con isn't being sensed when its plugged in. I know it's the switch and not the joy cons because i have used several different joy cons and they all do the same thing. Would replacing the bar in this video possibly fix my problem?
Yeah, that’s what it sounds like. That ribbon is so sensitive. Take it apparent like I did and maybe it just slipped out of the port, or maybe it did break.
I’m gonna need this. My cat knocked my switch off my dresser and the the slide rail broke. It’s been broken for a year and I’m finally done without handheld mode.
So I was playing breath of the wild and when I was starting to kill molduking it says the right controller is running low of battery and the right bottom corner of the screen is damaged and the right controller is never connecting to the right side of the screen and I need to buy the nintendo switch pro controller. The switch works by the way
What do I do if ithe slider isn't completely off but its just really loose?
Which replacement side rails do you recommend now?
Hey, I would go with these:
amzn.to/41ZIxMM
Thank you for letting me know my links are bad!
What do you do when the screws on the switch itself are stripped ? And you can’t get the case off to repair the rails
Those are so small it’s so tough. I’ve had to use a dremmel to make my own flat head area to turn. That’s worse case, make sure you are applying pressure and maybe it’ll catch.
Why you haven't showed the right Joycon?! Mine has the right rail cable detached for some reason, the left one is fine
I have a question. Does this fix the problem with the Switch detecting the joycons when they're physically connected to the switch? My joycons are attached, but the Switch keeps saying it connected, then says that they're not on Switch sliders. Hard to explain the problem. Hope anyone can understand what I mean.
Yeah. It’s likely something is malfunctioning between the switch and the joycons. Do they charge on the switch?
Bruh I got the screw drivers in the description and I didn’t come white the precision one, and not my middle score just isn’t comin out no matter what screw driver I use, thanks a lot
Hey dude. I’m sorry, that’s the same package we used in a different video and from our original purchase. The bundle may have changed. I’ll update the link next time on our PC. Which middle screw isn’t coming out?
@@BrickBuildingKids it was the middle screw on the left side but I had to make a little slit on the think that was attached to the bold everything is working perfectly!!!!!!your video is one of a kind going in depth of what to do with fixing it!!!thank you man!
Question teach! I have the same problem as you, at 14 mins. The screw sockets are broken off with only one to hold in place. Do you happen to know a way to replace those or any substitutes you know of? Thank you for the time and it's okay if unknown
well i save tons of money with this thanks but can i use my own screw to for the switch???
.... so question... I just have2 missing screws should i just replace the screws first? Or does that not really affect if the slider registers a joy con or not?
Thank you so much! You saved me and my console
I wish you the best
That’s wonderful to hear! Thanks for commenting.
Oh my gosh! My name is Alex and my brothers name is Noah! He dropped it and bent the rail.. Sorry dad? 😂😂
Did you do one for the joy con rails?
Not yet. I have one broken but haven’t ordered the parts for it yet.
Where’s the link to what is needed to order? Right side.
Can you do this video but with the interruptor Of the red joycon
Thank for the vid.
My left slider got bent would this help?
Great tutorial but you unfortunately skipped the one part I need lol. You didn't show how you attached the ribbon to the slider. I can't seem to get it on.
Or I guess it already came attached... is it soldered on? Mine came off and I can't reattach it
do you have a tutorial on doing the other side?
Not yet. My boys somehow haven’t broken that side yet. It’s a similar premise just you have to navigate that ribbon under some different components.
Hey do u know where to get a ribbon cable for the sliders cause mine broke and I have no ideas we’re to get them😅
Could I go to game stop and tell them to do this
Still needs help the rail is not connected to the brown wiring that you are connecting how do I connect it back to the rail
I replaced mine and it didn't work, do you know what might be the issue then?
My boys rear thanks you.
Thank you, I probably would have snapped the ribbon again in anger without seeing you do it correctly, first.
Glad we could help!
Bro I threw my switch and that part all fell off idk how to put the orange strips back where they were
Can you ñame me the tools you used?
I bought an unpatched switch recently on eBay. to modify it , also bought a set of cheap 3rd party joycons for $ 35 . I powered it on a few days ago when I received it . It goes directly to the joycon connection screen , and the right joycon is really tough to slide on , you almost have to force it , which I don't wanna do ! They don't connect to the system or detect .could it be the cheap Joycons ? or maybe the Tablet ? This Sucks !!!!! haha I am able to get into recovery mode , not sure if that would help restoring. I would give that a shot but don't know is that would screw me with hacking it .
You need to do it with oem joycons for the first time.
Good video👍👍👍
I have now learned my lesson not to break things that red controller cost me 40 pounds to replace
Are the rails different from the original switch model? I need to replace my right one.. And I have the original switch from the first year it came out
Ours was a first year console too. All the rails should be the same.
@@BrickBuildingKids Has it been holding up ? I'm just being cautious because I don't feel like re-ordering stuff ..lol ... I think the pins arent making correct contact.. they lock in place but you wiggle the controller it will work and it won't work.. I wiggle it into place and then I tape it ... just to charge the joy con lol And then I untape it and then use the joy cons until the battery drains.. I could just buy another controller but I'm not about to spend $70 on one.. I've actually used a different joy con and it still does the same thing in the rail..So it's probably the rail contact pins.. on the switch itself.. Main reason why i am asking is because The rails Some of them look different than what stock ones look like .. I'm sure it has something to do with because Nintendo doesn't actually sell the parts .. but it's the same stuff..
You are right on how they look. We just replaced the card reader on this same console and got a bad part and had to return it and order from somewhere else. It sounds like the ribbon on the rails might have ripped which is why it works sometimes. The first time we replaced it, it held up great. My 8 year old has dropped this so many times and they break again and each time the screw area gets stripped or cracks on the actual case. We resorted to gluing the rail back on the last time because the area didn’t have anything to screw into. We have the switch now in a case that protects the whole joycons. I’ve never gotten bad rails and I’ve replaced them 3 or 4 times but only because of how poorly the switch gets treated.
I broke the right slider and they joycon came off but the slider is stuck on the console
Need to replace the long ribbon sliding rail . Have any video on that?.
I haven't had to replace that one yet, but it's a little more complicated. Where the ribbon connects is actually slightly tucked under the mother board. When it happens to one of ours, I'll surely post my video, but ifixit has some nice steps listed: www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nintendo+Switch+Left+Joy-Con+Rail+Replacement/113429
@@BrickBuildingKids just replaced it but I think my system was still on when I disconnected battery 😅. Now that I repaired that I got error code 2162-0002 . Keeps locking me out the system even after hard reset.😬

Hello, new sub here. I stupidly fell asleep after a 16 hr workday while playing. I found my switch on the ground with a BROKEN JOYCON, npt the switches rail. Anyways i fixed the joycon and reattached the ribbon thing.
Now my left side connection is considerably looser🥲😪.
Its not the joycon that it loose but instead the switch rail not the joycon rail😢. Even with the original joycons the left side is loose which wasnt the case before.
Will replacing is peace help? Ive only had this console for like 2 days. Makes me real sad cause they were perfect before
It sounds like the fall may have stretched the inside rails. Replacing it would make it tighter again. That’s unfortunate for a new console. Sorry to hear that. You could try to use pliers to maybe make the gap smaller again and not replace the rail.
Do you remember if the left side was loose before you fixed the right side? Maybe it just needs one of the screws more tight?
@@BrickBuildingKids highly appreaciate the quick response.
Both sides were tight when i got the console recently. Woke up to my switch on the floor and the joycons rail was ripped off along with the ribbon. Fixed it and was loose. These were aftermarket joycons. Even with my unused OEM joycons that side was now loose🙃.
You need twizers to hadle easier the ribbon
