- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- James has been recently complaining that his Nintendo Switch has an iffy Joycon - specifically on the right side.. In this video I dismantle the Nintendo Switch and replace the Joycon rails on BOTH the Left and Right sides.
This is the kit I used to replace mine.. amzn.to/3hzBIP7 - and here's a kit that just contains the rails - amzn.to/3FWtPNk
I really enjoyed making this video - please give it a like and a comment if it helped you.

My dumb butt thought the connection where the ribbon met the rail was the part to unhook when someone was walking me through it- until I saw it was the soldered part of the ribbon. This video helped immensely in the reinstallation of the new part!
I’m so pleased to hear that! Glad it helped!
Same here, im glad i didn't rip the whole thing out 😅
Ridiculously informative and helpful video. You did not a cut a single corner in the repair or in showing us the process.
Thanks so much buddy! Make sure you hit that like button 🙏🏼
i'd remove the screws from the side rails first or 3 of the 4 and loosen the 4th - minimize touching of internal components then back of case etc but nice vid :)
I really like that little mat your using. I replaced my bumpers on my 3ds I’m going to try and replace my rails as well because they are having connection issues with new joy cons
It’s great!!
Watched your tutorial, and used to to fix my switch as well!
Your video and explanation was super helpful, so thank you!
As an aside, did you end up making a video for replacing the joy-con rails as well? I got the same exact kit you posted, and might consider replacing a pair of joy-con rails as well
I have not! I might give it a try sometime! Thanks so much for your kind words, much appreciated!
Thanks to you I just fixed my Nintendo switch, my intire right rail came off and I had to replace it, it only took me 20 min to do it, and without your video it probably would have been 1-2 h, lol, so thank you
Ahh so happy to help! 🙌🏻
You weren't kidding when you said the screws on the joycon rails were tight, I made a few attempts but it wont budge, while it still mostly retains its shape, I feel its beginning to strip.
Do you have any tools/technique for these kinds of situations?
P.S: Appreciate that you still respond to comments on older videos. Thank you!
If you can spare the time to watch a video, I can spare time to comment! I’m not sure if you’re using the screwdriver that came with the rails or not, I’d definitely recommend using something where you put the bit into a separate driver- a bit like the ifixit toolkits. There’s actually one with a larger driver, you’re able to get a bit more torque when you have something bigger to hold.
Accidentally broke the ribbon cable of my left rail because I thought I had to unscrew it to open the backplate 😅 thanks for the video
Thanks for the tutorial, I kinda completely stripped the screw at the bottom left, not the one that holds in the sd card but the one below it.😅 I kinda just made a little hole and got it 😂.
Anyways thanks tho this was very helpful and I am now subscribed.👍❤
Thank you! Glad you got it out!
Thanks for this video, I managed to change a faulty left rail in 30 minutes, works fine now, very happy ^^
I have this same issue- thought it was the joycon, but it wasn’t at all.
Now I have broken joycons and a broken rail. Fun!!!
Thanks though man 🙏🏼
Same here but my joy cons work and the rail is loose still works but this helped fix the tightening of it
Kip Hakes, is our sonic screwdriver God Bless from Connecticut, USA underneath 8 inches of snow today!
Haha! I’m in New York at the moment, got a fair bit of snow here this morning! 🙏🏼
Guys put the heat shield partly on and test before putting it all back together saving you tons of time
my kid rip the screws to the rideside slider. so i had my hopes up to fix it and it was a fail when after i noticed i had to order a new body. smh
And I thought my joycons were the problem nope it was the corroded connector 😅
Thanks for the content. Will be attempting to fix my switch rails soon. This video will be a great guide. o7
Good luck!!
I’d like to see the joy con rails replaced idk if you ever did it I haven’t found it
I haven’t done that one! I might still cover it if my son damages the rails on his
My mom broke my rails this was helpful
Thanks a lot for this video. I watched it once in my lunch break, then during the operation pausing/rewinding when necessary. First I thought you were making this look easy, but the video is spot on! Little warning there for the ones just getting ready to replace their connectors though - once the cover is off, the microscope does make things seem bigger than they actually are.
Happy it helped - please give it a thumbs up if you haven’t already 👍🏼
I did, indeed. Liked, commented, subscribed.
Thanks fella!
test with the controller.
it will let you know which rail is broken if the controller reads it.
I dont suppose there's a way to just tighten the rails is there? My kids kidnapped my switch and now the joycone feel like they can flap like a birds wings
I mean, you can try tightening the screws, but it usually means new rail time sadly!
Very nice video. I saw someone else replace the left rail and they basically took apart the whole Switch in their video but it is nice to see I can do it far more easily. Although judging by the video and the comments, I probably just go ahead and replace both rails
Followed this video and fixed my Switch. Great instructions!!
Glad I could help!!
I’ve been having this weird issue with my switch. Right side of my switch won’t recognize joy con in handheld or connect wirelessly to the joy con. It even stop connecting to all my hori split pad and third party joycons on the right side now. Do you think fixing just right side railing will solve the issue
If it’s not working wirelessly, then I don’t think replacing the rail will help I’m afraid
@@kiphakesdo you recommend anything. I’ve been all over forums and I haven’t found issue similar to mine
8:46 “that’s what she said”
Great video! Were you able to make a video to replace the rails on the joycons themselves?
I haven’t. I have done one about replacing the thumb sticks which requires dismantling the joycons quite a bit - changing the rails wouldn’t be much more of a stretch.
@@kiphakes Thank you! I will look into that :)
I'm gonna be replacing the rail while watching the video. The rail won't even connect the right joycon which is a big problem.
Thanks for giving me the motivation to try this repair by myself.
Although without microscope, it is harder, it is still doable for someone with little to no experience in repairing electronics.
Yes absolutely. The microscope is helpful, and also makes it easier for you, the viewer to understand what I’m trying to show!
I for the love of christ can't remove the 4 main screws on the back panel for the life of me
Might sound counterintuitive, but tighten them slightly, and then try loosening them.
@@kiphakesI just tried that and unfortunately I think i just ended up stripping the heads with the crappy scew diver they gave me
Thank you!
Bought a switch with only the left joycon included and the seller didnt say "the right sides rail is broken" and simply listed it as used...after 2 hours of trying to find a fix that didnt require opening it up i finally gave in and yup... the right sides ribbon cable was snapped at the top of the rail. Guess im lucky it was the right side cable and that it wasnt my new joycon i bought for it like i feared.
Thanks for the video.
Ahh you’re welcome ! If you have trouble with stick drift on it at any point, I’ve done a video about that too
I want to do this too but i have NEVER taken appart a switch or any device do you think it is easy for a beginner to do?
It’s pretty easy! I did it! 😂
Already replaced right rail but still doesn't work. Any ideas?
No,
Sorry!
very good video, great instructions.
Thanks so much !
Can I ask what type of thermal paste you reccomend please? Would either Artic MX4 or Artic MX6 work & which ones best? :)
Yes, either of those would work just fine, it’s not too mission critical which one, the Switch doesn’t get CRAZY hot. 🙌🏻
thank you
all that for two rails? damn nintendo screwed me over twice........ might just chuck these bad boys in the bin, they seems disposable with how easy they fail.
thank you for the video anyway.
Agreed
Thanks for sharing this. Just did this and it worked. Luckily it was only the left controller so didn’t have to fiddle fart with the pig tail ribbon cable.
So pleased I could help! Thanks for watching!
I'm having the same issue w mine now. Just replaced the joy cons, but now time for the rails on the console!
Good luck!!
You're amazing bro, thanks for the tutorial
Thank you so much! I have been looking for a guide to this fix but I just couldn’t find one.
Good luck!
I’ve replaced mine but now it doesn’t recognize the joycons. Could I have not connected the ribbon cables correctly?
Yes.. or the ribbon isn’t in properly
U look like the dad from Casper
Thanks?! 😂
@@kiphakes sorry I couldn't unsee it 🤣
Ty
Yw
Amazing instructions and I easily fixed my switch!!! Thank you
You’re so welcome Lisa!!
I really appreciate this video! Thanks so much. Its still gotta charge up bc its completely dead, so hopefully it works!
Update: It works great! No problems.
@StecHouse amazing!!
the intro alone made me subscribe :)
Perfect content and duration thanks
Hi, I changed my left joycon rail but my switch still doesnt recognize the left controller. However, it can recognize other left controllers. What seems to be the issue of the joycon?
Really sorry, I don’t know!
@Kip Hakes Oh okay, thanks for the reply!
Is replacing the thermal paste a must do? If so what one did you use.
It’s definitely recommended- this is what I used amzn.to/3VL5ikN
I cannot get the back screws off and I bought the kit!
I am just stripping them more and more annd i cannot get the back panel off
You might need a larger screwdriver to get more torque on it
@@kiphakes I will try more tomorrow
The top half screws on the back keep chipping my screwdrivers.. how do I get them out?!
Ensure you’re using the correct size driver, and maybe try tightening them slightly, then loosening
@@kiphakes Definitely using the right screwdriver size, everything's coming out except a select few which keep damaging the screwdrivers! Nothing works!!
Never heard of anything like that before! Very strange!
@@kiphakes Really?? It seems like a pretty common issue for these screws not being able to be unscrewed on the back
This video: 21 minutes
This video plus twisters: 37 seconds
😂😂😂
Twisters?
@@kiphakes Yes twisters Mate 😁
What if i break the thing where the battery gets plugged in?
I broke it😭
That might require more specialist repair
Could you make a video of doing the joy cons
In the future.. possibly!
Can you please do this tutorial with the oled model or is it all the same
I don’t think it’s wildly different.. but I don’t really want to buy one 😂
@@kiphakes okay thank you I don't have the same issue as this video but it did help fix the rail being too loose
I replaced the Joycon rail with a new one and it still didn’t work, any idea what it could be?
Test with a known working one - if it’s still not working, you might need a professional!
Thanks!!
Hope it helped!
Great walk through! 😃 thank you!
You are so welcome! Please make sure you give it a Like if you haven't already, it will help it get pushed out to other people who need help!
@@kiphakes done! You definitely earned that like. We fixed my sons switch with ur walkthrough with no issues. It was easy to follow and correct. Rarely do I find a tutorial that I follow and it’s this put together. I know this is stuff that didn’t need to be said lol, but more comments helps the video, as you already know. Thank you again! 😍😃
If I take my switch to be repaired and it needs new parts, will My console be in danger of being ban?
Sorry If i have Bad English
I’m not aware repaired Switch’s do get banned. You’ll be fine
I replaced my right one also and it works and connects but it doesn't do the animation anymore for some reason?
How strange.. is it a 3rd party joycon? Maybe they behave differently?
@@kiphakes no it’s the original joycon but the rail is probably not oem but at least it works
what kind of work mat is that?
Here’s a link to it in the UK - amzn.to/3uBmr6R and here’s a link to it in the US - amzn.to/3MZoCaz 🙌🏻
I’m scared to do it do mine please
Ahh I’d recommend you get in touch with The Cod3r - he’s a proper repair tech
Clutch! Thanks for this video, helped me out big time in order to fix my sons switch
Happy to hear it!
This the same as the oled for the right rail procedure?
No idea! Never opened an OLED one!
@kiphakes thanks ! Also was the right side the smaller length ribon? Which rail was harder left right?
@@Gothguitarist haha! Honestly, can’t remember! I don’t think one side is harder than the other though!
Nice little Fix It Friday!
