    24:13 The "grooves" are designed so that the metal tab bends from the right place. If it was straight, without the narrow bit, the bending could happen in different spot and that's not good for tight fit.
    The narrowing does mean it's the weakest point and metal fatigue will be an issue in repeated openings but it's "not perfect but the best we can do" sort of thing.

    • @Tronicsfix
      @Tronicsfix  5 месяцев назад +30

      Yep, that makes sense.

    • @tusux2949
      @tusux2949 5 месяцев назад +20

      That groove is standard when bending metal. Not only it makes sure the part bends where it needs to bend but also makes the corner of the bend not stick out and sit flush. That is how you bend metal with precision.
      The issue is the metal they used is either sintered (cheaper but nowhere near as strong as the real deal) or the wrong type, purposely selected so that it breaks. If they used more pliable metals - like aluminium (which is plenty strong for such tiny parts) or copper (more expensive) or the right type of steel (softer, preferably Zinc coated), it would be the toughest part of that thumbstick and would never break. Hell, if they put bigger locking tabs on the side and just used plastic for the metal part, it would work as well.
      As it is right now, it is blatantly obvious it is a case of planned obsolescence. It gets me furious, because we get restricted from using plastic bags in grocery stores to "save the planet" but something like this will cause an otherwise perfectly working electronic device to go straight to the landfill... What a waste of a working screen, electronic components with precious metals inside and a bunch of electricity to produce all of this... All because of a tiny clip, it is ridiculous.

      @@tusux2949 or if they'd just drop a shipment of those cheap metal plates on the free market, so you can just beak the tabs and replace what is realistically a max 2 cent metal plate.
      If companies decide to make parts cheap and single use, they should at least just (allow their partners to) sell them...

      First thing to that comes to mind when I think of impossible to get into are PS3 controllers and new generation iPhones.
      PS5 pro controller should be the standard when it comes to being able to fix our things. Just make the parts modular.
      I know some people aren't as tech savvy when it comes to self repair but if it was just easier to remove and replace parts that wouldn't be a problem.

    • @tusux2949
      @tusux2949 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Kakeen I'd imagine simply whispering "modular" anywhere near the vicinity of Sony HQ (or any large corpo for that matter) would be enough to get you kicked out of the door. It's a surefire way to make things repairable and last longer. It would also mean more profits for them if they sold the replacement parts but that also means more work for them and they figure it would be just as good to try to sell you another unit when yours break.. But then the question is why buy something in the first place if you know it is built to fail asap? The more they push the failure state to happen sooner, the more it will backfire in sales. This Portal case seems like it's past the " do not buy" line for me already.
      I was surprised by the design of the PS5 pro controller because of this. Maybe its a way for them to test the waters and see how profitable it is that way. But it also costs a lot more for us than the regular one.... I am really tired of all those mindgames already, to the point of only buying things I absolutely need and only if they are of decent quality (or the cheapest ones if the quality cannot be confirmed). The trust that products will last at least their warranty period and buying blindly is long gone.

    Wow man. I was not aware of what it is you're dealing with currently. But having read some comments, I see now and want you to know you're an absolute champion for still making the content despite this temporary situation.
    My mother had stage three cancer in 2016 and spent a year and some change going to every chemo session with her. So I understand just how exhausting and scary it can be all at once. She was cancer free after that time and has remained ever since.
    I wish you the best with your treatments. You seem to be in good spirits and that's one of the most important things when it comes to your health and well-being. Especially while enduring chemo. God bless and I'll continue to watch the videos and watching your progress. Be well ❤

    Hey Steve. Love the content! Just a comment for that “grease” you were wondering about. On power tools the triggers all use the same technology as those thumb-sticks. They use electrical lubricant to help with conductivity and the sliding of those contact points. You need to buy your own supply if you plan on continuing to repair those thumb sticks in the future. I have my own for repairing my power tools. Great job on everything you post! Keep up the hard work and I hope you a speedy recovery!
