Can you use the Portal as an additional controller? ie 1 player using a Dual Sense via the TV, and another player using the Portal via Remote Play? I used to do this with the Vita and PS4 Remote Play, so hoping it’s still the case. 😊

I think this device makes me play games 2 times more than usual. I hope it's great. Nice Portal 💙
@@shennb645 to be fair. I have used it on specific games. Sometimes I have used it 15 hours a week and sometimes a week not. I got even better wifi, so it runs flawlessly now. I truly recommend only single-player games. I just finished the Life is Strange arcadia bay collection. I've also played a third of Spider-Man 2 on it. Mostly collectibles and side stuff. I occasionally play GTA V on it. I also just started Red Dead Redemption remastered and Horizon Forbidden West. And I'm playing like half the time on the Portal. I'd give the device a solid 8/10. If you like laying in bed or sitting on the couch or in the garden with a handheld device playing your PS4 and PS5 games I think the Portal is great. But your internet has to be great for the best result. If you're wifi is mediocre the frames will drop and the thing will lose connection.
Absolutely mind blowing that they won’t allow you to stream any of the cloud games from your PS Plus subscription. Such a strange choice when it seems like a perfect use case for the Portal.
It's actually Not mind blowing. I still have my mind. Not blown out. I'm guessing your new to electronics and gaming, They never release everything all at once with the best of everything. This is literally the first version of this type of gaming device, wait for the PSP Pro and other features to come out. Be patient lad.
It would probably cause too much latency from streaming a cloud game from the PS5 to the Portal. It could possibly come in a future updates though as they continue to improve remote play
After watching your video I was finally convinced to buy it. I’m severely physically disabled and suffer from severe chronic pain and chronic fatigue. Looking at a tv for a long time is really difficult and has limited my time on my ps5 since it cost so much energy. The nintendo switch has always enabled me to just keep it beside me and play in bed or wherever I felt most comfortable even if I play for just a few minutes. It will help me to be able to play even when I’m bed bound which will make it easier to bear and ignores that chronic pain. So thank you for your honest opinion because it helped me buy it.
I've been using my iPad pro for this already and I must say I'm impressed how very low lag it produces and has works excellent 👌🏽 for me. I connect either a PS5 controller via bluetooth or straight wire both works GREAT in my experience 😜
Yeah I too have been doing that with an iPad Pro for years now and it’s pretty good, but it’s still two separate devices and I have to sit at a table to use it. I’m getting this so I can lay back in bed and on the couch and play even more comfortably and only have to use one device. Also, I really like that it’s part of the Sony ecosystem and I don’t have to use a third party device to play my games away from the TV. This will be a more portable option that my iPad and controller set up and I’m so excited for it 😂 now I can set up my iPad outside and play RUclips videos while I also smoke a blunt and play ps5 on the portal ✅✅ lol

Nice Portal, it does look great and at £200 might be worth it, but as you have said, more so if they open it up to the Direct Streaming from the Gaming Cloud then yes it would then become more versatile and thus more worth the money, even though as you point out about the 'Backbone' and if that is worth £100 then unreservedly it is worth the money in that case!
I didn’t know that PS5 doesn’t support BT with other headphones other than what is compatible with the PS5. I bought a dongle off Amazon. It’s the Avantree C81 USB-C BT adapter. It has a USB-C as well as a headphone jack that is BT compatible. It is the best thing I bought for my PS5.
Just tested and at the moment it does NOT work. The USB dongle I have lights up when connected to the PS5. On the Portal there's no light at all, assuming no power is sent OUT of the port.
@SpawnPoiint Ahh man thanks for testing and actually getting back to me. I'm disappointed in Sony for this I can't lie, I bought the Inzone H3 wired to use with the Portal for now and have ordered some Pulse Elites for Feb 2024
A lot of people won’t understand the need for this type of device since it isn’t standalone. But battery, screen size and just sheer usefulness of the portal has been amazing. You don’t have to waste phone battery to use remote play and now I don’t need to go all the way upstairs to my man cave just to olay 15 minutes of the ps5 before the kids get antsy 😂
Could already PS remote years ago. Most large phones are much bigger than original PSP. Don’t see a need when you can buy a backbone for $50 and take it anywhere since you already have a phone at all times.
I honestly would have nearly paid $400 for a new PlayStation handheld that could natively play the entire PS4 back catalog as well as stream the PS5 (or play lower-spec PS5 games). Knowing things like the Steam Deck are more powerful than the PS4, it's more than possible, and because it's Sony, they have the ability to shrink the die of a PS4 APU to make it much more power efficient.
I wish too. i feel like The markets too competitive though. Switch and steam deck do it so well. Plus, they probably still have PTSD for how hard ps vita loss them.
Sony wont go to that market again after the vita. The model of creating 2 version of every game are not profitable. Sony makes money mostly from software.
@@AndrewHadi07 This time around they wouldn't have to. this handheld I'm thinking of would just have a die-shrunk PS4 APU in it, so PS4 games would natively play
If they were to do this, they should also make a 500-600$ version with better specs and can play ps5 games that are compatible with it, alongside the 400$ ps4 game version.
Nice portal 💙 It is up to Sony now to either make this device a beast or a forgettable device, allowing cloud streaming and some sort of menu to download media apps or stream them from your console would make a world of difference IMO
This the one. Sony has an habit of making dope devices and giving up support. Let’s change the narrative. Streaming and apps would be freaking god send with this device.
lol you asking for things that will never come. You would hate streaming a game to your ps5 then streaming to your portal. Your lag would be ridiculous. This is not for media it’s for gaming watch your phone or your tv for media lol.
the addition to stream it anywhere with wifi just solidifies that i need to buy it. i always put my ps5 in rest mode anyway to prevent database damage, so this will be perfect to play some bloodborne at class😏
Ever since this was announced (and up until now) I've always thought that the main reason is playing away from home with remote play. I get the reasons you mention for playing at home but that literally happens once in a very while. Internet in my country is quite good in general (usually a gigabit connection or atleast 800mbps) so it's good to hear that it will be usable from outside the home.
If you have to login in to public Wi-Fi or after to term it's useless, and most hotels and public places require you to agree to terms. Unless you have a unlimited hotspot it's useless. The cost just to use it is over $700, a PS5 and the portal and 5hen upgrading your phone plan to unlimited hotspot.
If Cloud gaming was included with the Portal, it would be a game changer as you said. I currently use a Backbone for Cloud gaming via Gamepass either when im home or out and about. Works for me, but I'd enjoy Cloud gaming support from Sony as well. At present, £200 for a Remote play only device feels steep. More so, when you realise that if you want to use wireless headphones with this, you'll need to fork out another £120 to £200. Im hoping that the existing Pulse 3D headset gets a firmware update to allow PlayStation link to work on this.
I know that is impossible, what I'm referring to is that I'd like Sony to do Cloud gaming support similar to how Xbox do it with Gamepass. Sony are just starting the PS5 Cloud streaming, and I believe the Portal would be ideal for Cloud gaming from Sony.
Why Sony doesn’t allow users to use their own headphones astounds me. The ps5 recognizes my AirPods then tells me nah fuck you we don’t support Bluetooth audio devices However if your Bluetooth audio device is our shitty headset we’ll allow it
For me it’s probably a day one buy, I know streaming handheld aren’t favorable by many because you need good wifi but for me, I don’t intend being in public with a handheld I just find that extra. The battery life and no hot temperatures and lightweight and still very great graphic fidelity at a good frame rate and haptic feedback. It’s basically all I’ve wanted. And all for $200 it’s pretty awesome
Ps sells a 200$ controller I would never buy...but this whole controller+screen I would buy multiple times every time.im sure somewhere down the line they will update it to be used as a ps5 controller and second screen similar to the wii-u
@edgarsuazo1950 That $200 ps edge controller is absolutely worth it if you play fps competitive games like Apex Legends, COD, Fornite, etc.; if not then no.
Just wanted to say thank you very much. This video gave me everything I needed to know and actually answered all my questions. I'm definitely going to get myself and my son one so my wife can get back the main tv to watch her shows lol. Thanks again from Toronto Canada
Thanks for the review. The latency bit confirms my doubts about the Portal. Unfortunately, I only play competitive fighting games that don't work well under laggy conditions. After giving up on the Backbone, I was hoping that the Portal would be a convenient way to practice away from my larger monitors. Seems like my only safe bet is a dedicated handheld PC.
@@swineflu07 I'd say that I have relatively good Internet speeds. About 18 - 30 ms ping, over ethernet to most game servers, on average. Someone would have to test the Portal against the best WiFi router, within the same room, to give us all a best case scenario.

@@eazybuxafew exactly my thoughts, I have an Xbox but I don’t really need it because I can play game pass games from my Samsung tv, I don’t think Sony would want that.
Nice portal! This looks cool and all but I fear the inevitable stick drift issue. I haven't had a PS5 controller last more than a year or two and I would feel very upset if this expensive portal became unusable due to that issue.
I’ve had my ps5 since release and I haven’t had any awful experience with stick drift. When ever I get it, I just press down the analog stick and do a 360 blow. Works like a charm. You won’t suffer from stick drift as much as these people are cursing it 😂
Ive had only my launch ps5 dualsense drift. I've switched entirely since a year ago to a new one and it still hasn't started making problems so I think that issue is gone.
The burning question is, is this a solid experience over the current offerings in terms of lag ? Remote play sucks, Chiaki has its own set of issues. I’m really curious if mobile hotspot is a good experience with a good connection. That’s a huge selling point for this device but none of these reviews really take a deep dive into it. 15mbps vs 20 and on. Latency with ping time on mobile hotspots is also a thing.
I can play call of duty and other games like that through my phone hotspot to my ps5, so wouldn't it be the same? I still think it's basically a waste of money but people are going to buy what they want
@@josephhall7317 people are just expecting an overall better experience considering it’s a device dedicated to remote play. That’s how Sony is advertising it at least so it’s fair to expect better performance.

@nicobailey3264 I'm not sure what you're question is. I watched the video. I've been following this thing for the past year now. It sucks. The PSVita is fucking classic. You can still buy one today, and it dose what this thing does but better. If you still have a PS4 you can even use it to play ps4 games. @@nicobailey3264 yeah there are literally multiple other reviews showing the person somewhere other than on their home wifi playing this remotely. PS5 at home, this at work, etc. That’s the point. If it can’t truly remote play what’s the point.

Almost answered all my questions. I just want to know how the actual streaming performance compares to Remote Play on other devices (iOS, Android, PC/Mac). Since its a bespoke system does it have any inherent advantages from a software POV? Aside from that, great review.
You can test regular remote play now on any device. It works decent but its not streamlined. It has acceptable quality of remote play but from all the reviews i have seen so far is that it is quicker than using a third party device
There is no changes on The backend. You get The same results on The remote app as this device more or less. There is nothing that is integrated on The portal that boost lag vs other devices.
@@LegionzGG This is not true. If you have used remote play on a third party device then you know that because you are connecting to the app which connects to your PS5 that maintaining a stable connection on both the app and the PS5 creates latency or dropped connection. Because the portal has the remote play app built into the OS directly, the Portal maintains a stable connection longer with less points of failure between the user and the PS5 because you don't have to access the app the Portal OS is the remote play app. Every review I have seen from trusted third party reviewers says that the connection is faster and more stable which is not what anyone who has used remote play on any consistent basis would describe using a thirs party device. Usually you get minor disconnects from either the app or the PS5 over longer gameplay sessions but no one has reported that kind of same issue using the portal. It is not intended to revolutionize the remote play feature PS created in 2012, it is intended to make it better. And by all accounts thus far it seems to be doing that.
You know what would also be cool? If the portal gets successful, they should make the handles a skin color like the skin colors the controllers have. Imagine the portal with the Spider-Man 2, ragnarok, camo, etc skins on the portal. I feel like if they did that first maybe more people would buy as a starting point compared to just the white basic color.
I appreciate this review. I’ve been on the fence. I’ve always wished sometimes I could just game from my bed when I start to get sleepy or wind down. This allows me to game anywhere in the house. Thank you again. 👍🏼
Nice Portal ! screen protectors are useful on phones since they are used everywhere all the time. it is a personal preference if you want to put one on the ps portal but i feel as you would only really use it while stationary and wont really be dropping it at all
I think the reason the Portal doesn't have cloud streaming yet is probably due to the fact that there was never a Playstation cloud streaming app for Android, so they're likely working on an Android cloud streaming app right now but it isn't ready yet. I also hope they update the PC cloud streaming app to include PS5 cloud streaming, so that I can cloud stream PS5 games from my Steam Deck, it would be really nice.
You bring up a really good point about the android app. Looking at the interface, I can see Sony pushing out an update so when you turn on the portal and you select your PlayStation, there would be an option for just going straight to cloud (which is probably what they are working on but looks like that feature wasn’t going to be ready in time for release)
Nah. Cloud streaming is unlikely to end up on mobiles because Google and Apple doesn't welcome the competition and there is no browser version unlike xCloud, but also because Sony doesn't want to risk diverting people from buying the console to play their games, especially when they're still obsessed with chasing 25m annual console sales while demand is at its peak and supplies can match demand now.
@@Chris-db5gynah, not even that, considering their first party games on both that and Remote play doesn't play nice with any controllers that are not PlayStation licenced.
@@Shadowespeon17 the streaming app doesn’t have to be on iOS or android. The PlayStation portal runs on android, which means Sony just needs to make an android app for the portal exclusively.
I definitely love the idea. I think it's a bit impractical. I see this and my first thought is most people would wanna play it on the go. Like any other portable gaming device. The problem is, you do not always have a good wifi connection on the go. I wouldn't take this to work where I might have max 30mins to an hr to play. If I already have a PS5 and a set up. I might as well play on that. I could see this as a good thing if say you have a family, don't have a set up for your console and all the TVs are being used. Aside from that, I don't see the purpose. As I said before, though, I definitely love the idea. but personally, I would rather invest those 200 bucks on other games I can play on my PS5 rather than a PS portal

How has it been?
Probably don’t want it to affect PS5 sales.
It would probably cause too much latency from streaming a cloud game from the PS5 to the Portal. It could possibly come in a future updates though as they continue to improve remote play

Thank you for such a well thought out review, you answered every question I could’ve come up with.
Me too. But I hate carrying my iPad and a remote, just to play on the go…even with the ps backbone and ph. This is better 😜

Can I use it to turn on my console remotely? Can I use it using a different wifi network?
Great, thorough review! The fact that it doesn't support Bluetooth headphones is mind boggling, otherwise it seems like a cool device.
PS5 doesn't either, you need a dongle to even use a PlayStation brand headset
@@covidoutdat19thwardyaheardmereally, didn’t know that about the ps5. I wonder if it will work via my tv’s bluetooth🤔
It doesn’t have Bluetooth, but it has an entire button dedicated solely to PlayStation Link headphone pairing.
I remember the switch didn’t support Bluetooth but they eventually added it later so hopefully that happens
Chris, can you please plug in your wireless headset adapter usb c into the Portal and let us know if that works the same way the PS5 does? Thanks
Just tested and at the moment it does NOT work. The USB dongle I have lights up when connected to the PS5. On the Portal there's no light at all, assuming no power is sent OUT of the port.

Could already PS remote years ago. Most large phones are much bigger than original PSP. Don’t see a need when you can buy a backbone for $50 and take it anywhere since you already have a phone at all times.
@@RMax-lz4ryWhat is backbone
I honestly would have nearly paid $400 for a new PlayStation handheld that could natively play the entire PS4 back catalog as well as stream the PS5 (or play lower-spec PS5 games). Knowing things like the Steam Deck are more powerful than the PS4, it's more than possible, and because it's Sony, they have the ability to shrink the die of a PS4 APU to make it much more power efficient.
I wish😢
I wish too. i feel like The markets too competitive though.
Nice portal 💙
It is up to Sony now to either make this device a beast or a forgettable device, allowing cloud streaming and some sort of menu to download media apps or stream them from your console would make a world of difference IMO
This the one. Sony has an habit of making dope devices and giving up support. Let’s change the narrative. Streaming and apps would be freaking god send with this device.

I get the reasons you mention for playing at home but that literally happens once in a very while. Internet in my country is quite good in general (usually a gigabit connection or atleast 800mbps) so it's good to hear that it will be usable from outside the home.

Question. Can you play on this remotely with your main living room console while others use the same console to watch a movie on it?
No, the guy said can only play one game at a time, it’s not a full blown console, just an accessory
This is why they don't want to do it lol imagine using your portal for gamepass lol that will be the best of both worlds.
@edgarsuazo1950 That $200 ps edge controller is absolutely worth it if you play fps competitive games like Apex Legends, COD, Fornite, etc.; if not then no.

some questions:
is it possible to play something else on the console while playing on the portable?

The burning question is, is this a solid experience over the current offerings in terms of lag ? Remote play sucks, Chiaki has its own set of issues. I’m really curious if mobile hotspot is a good experience with a good connection. That’s a huge selling point for this device but none of these reviews really take a deep dive into it. 15mbps vs 20 and on. Latency with ping time on mobile hotspots is also a thing.

@@LegionzGG
This is not true.
Silly question, but do you have to physically change the game in your PS5 if you want to play another game and play it on your PS Portal?
yes
unless you have them digitally
You know what would also be cool? If the portal gets successful, they should make the handles a skin color like the skin colors the controllers have. Imagine the portal with the Spider-Man 2, ragnarok, camo, etc skins on the portal. I feel like if they did that first maybe more people would buy as a starting point compared to just the white basic color.

9:57 soooooo the whole reason to take it away from home goes out the door if, like most do, your PS5 is fully off at home...
A nice and well Explained video as always.Appreciate the efforts you put into these videos man,Definitely buying it asap🤘🏻.
Video of the year🔥…will definitely be picking one of these up ‘Nice Portal💙’
Thank you Jane I appreciate that.
Nice review Spawn! One question, if you have a USB-C to Ethernet adapter could you please try and see if it works to have a wired connection to the Portal? Thanks!
Just tested for you, this does NOT work at this time unfortunately.
@@SpawnPoiint Yea okay fair enough! Would have been pretty cool tho. Still very excited for it. Thanks alot for taking your time to test this!
nice portal! im finally able to get mine today! Had to wait for stock to come in. Got my carry case from amazon and im trying to decide if i want to get the glass screen protector or not. Do you have any opinion on the screen protectors?
screen protectors are useful on phones since they are used everywhere all the time. it is a personal preference if you want to put one on the ps portal but i feel as you would only really use it while stationary and wont really be dropping it at all
I think the reason the Portal doesn't have cloud streaming yet is probably due to the fact that there was never a Playstation cloud streaming app for Android, so they're likely working on an Android cloud streaming app right now but it isn't ready yet.
I also hope they update the PC cloud streaming app to include PS5 cloud streaming, so that I can cloud stream PS5 games from my Steam Deck, it would be really nice.
Pc cloud streaming in never gonna happen. If it existed then most people would just stream from their steam deck or rog ally instead of buying this
You bring up a really good point about the android app.
The question I have is, can I use this as a second account if someone is using the ps5 on another account.
Looks awesome! Can’t wait to get mine Wednesday! 🔥
Does the tv or pc have to turn when you play on it?
Best review i found on RUclips!
Wow, thanks!
Surprised at the latency especially considering the speeds. I get noticeable delay with steam link even though my internet speeds are three times faster, Just wish it could do some cloud gaming too. Also nice portal
It feels like the same delay I get on my phone with ps remote play
@@FernandoMartinez-pv1idwhat about the graphics? With my phone using ps remote play often times it’s blurry and lagging even tho I have the gigabit verizon and on 5g
Love how it has an airplane mode LOL what can you do with it in that mode? 😂
There is one question i want to ask as I'm interested in purchasing one (available in my country/region early feb 2024), obviously you can play games that you've purchased digitally and through playstation plus but if you own the game/'s in physical copy can you still play them through the ps portal whilst the disc is inserted into the console?
Honestly - I really didn’t want to like this - but I can really see a use for it even though I have a Steam Deck. It’s a beautiful design and the fact it is a dedicated remote play device with a great screen - I can see the value.
Thank you I had been looking at that. Will get that sorted!
4:15 "a few others"
*Gets all handhelds in existence*
😂
Nice portal 💙 I'm happy with this review I pre ordered the portal a few days ago (took a while to get it) but my main concern was the lag and this review definitely helped me feel more justified in my purchase thank you!
@@Silvarian steam deck is super cool! But I'm gonna be honest I have my portal already and it's sick it's works for my needs as a dad and husband who's wife loves to watch her shows. It would be much better if this thing could go offline but i knew I'd use this for couch gaming while tending to my newborn and the wife watches TV and In bed its also cool that I can take this to say a family members house or a friends and not have to haul my entire PS5 with me
Wait so if you’re away from home you can connect to any wifi and it still works? The PlayStation console just has to be on or in rest mode right ?
Yep. Remote play and the PS Portal can be used anywhere as long as you:
1. Have a stable internet connection
2. Leave your PS5 on or in rest mode
@@knisawesome it’s such a shitty device, I wish it had the same features the PSP had.
@@yarfrmdaa1323 Same. But I think it was a good idea since remote play needed an upgrade, but it's just not worth the price
Nice Portal!
Great video and makes me want one even more! I’m currently playing Remote Play via the app on my phone with a controller mount - but would just leave the seamless experience this can offer!
Cannot wait to snag myself one!
The 8 inch screen seems really nice!
Only thing holding me back, is stick drift. But I suppose it does depend on how often you will use it, as it'll be a device not used anywhere near as much as a normal controller.
Now the plan to buy: ps5 pro, ps portal, airbuds for it and gta6 ... and life is good.
If you bought disc games, can you still play it while it is not inserted? Does PS portal need wifi every moment you need to play disc games? how about single player games?
So can you play online games away from home ?
Yeah bro
