Great review, you are the best reviewer on RUclips by far, love the detail.
Thank you Greg, it is very much appreciated 👍🏻
Jay, I’ve been interested in the DNA swing analyser since it first launched. There are a few caveats regarding its use and the actual parameters that influence a shaft recommendation.
First up the DNA swing analyser is heavy, static weight is about equivalent to Dynamic Gold S400 shafted iron, so some golfers respond negatively to this amount of heft. Certainly the first swing can be deleted in a lot of cases to allow the golfers to get familiar with the tool.
The only parameters that influence shaft selection are swing speed, tempo and release, everything else is eye candy.
Once the swing speed gets below 68 mph you get the stock recoil shaft recommendation.
Finally, there is a wide range of shafts but naturally it’s restricted to Mizuno’s custom shaft list, so it’s not definitive by any means.
The very basics way it works is Tempo affects shaft weight, swing speed influences flex choice and release influences shaft profile.
My fitter didn't like too many swings, in case I was starting to swing to it: 2-5 best
I didn't feel the swing analyzer was heavy at all. I got fitted to X-flex 130G and the fitter told me he knew I was going to be fitted something like that when I asked him if the analyzer had a graphite shaft because it felt super light and whippy to me.
Brilliant video looking forward to my Mizuno fitting day.
Excellent information, well delivered.
Great video . got fitted recently and the pro made sure I hit a dozen or balls before he even would let me loose with the fitting, used this to fit into MIZ, TM, PING, CALLWY options... Great experience to see what head, shaft, loft, lie would best suit
It's a brilliant cross manufacturer fitting tool that is unfortunately far too seldom used to it's full potential. Glad you had a great fitting experience 👍🏻
Hi Jay Great Video 👍, looking into the dark art of shaft selection, it’s the area where most every day golfers don’t consider when getting new clubs (judging buy looking in golf bags) & chatting to someone who’s just got a new club🤔, it’s a fantastic tool that takes out the variable of getting the right shaft for you (or narrowing it down), Brilliant in depth review, Thanks Dickey 9hcp 76year senior golfer
Before returning to Mizuno irons this year, I went for a fitting for Ping irons and struggled to understand why they didnt use the swing optimiser when I knew they had the equipment onsite! Great content again, Jay
I used the DNA Shaft Analyser for every iron fitting regardless as its just such a brilliant unbiased starting point. The Shaft Analyser doesn't know who you are or what your thoughts are, it just deals with your swing characteristics and displays the correct bend profile requirements. Then it's just a measure of marrying the closest option in whichever manufacturer you'll be fitting into 👍🏻
Fantastic video!!
If only all club fitters were as diligent, open and helpful.
This is a model for how all club fittings should be done.
Sadly I have many stories to tell of dubious club fittings, some by allegedly premiere fitting centres.
Damn, had no idea that swing tool gave back so much data.
Had a rather poor experience getting fit into some Mizuno irons this year where the fitter wasn't giving me much other that "You like them? You should buy those." Really wish I had known a bit more about club fitting before I made a purchase so I could have chosen some better options for myself
Unfortunately there are too many outlets which still fit in the sales style to maximise buying at every instance, and it's a lottery out there. There are a plethora of fitters ranging from full on PGA pros to guys off the street that have taken a key interest in fitting, with seemingly no correlation to quality of fit. Considering golf is driven by the word 'professional', getting a knowledgeable unbiased fitting seems to be in the lap of the gods. The only indicator I would say that helps is if the fitting is a paid for session or free. If the fitting is free there is a higher probability that the fitter will be earning via commission so that selling the absolute maximum amount of clubs will be on his/her mind. Paid for sessions (which is what I have always undertaken) may mean that the fitter can be honest and actually say if true that your own equipment is just as good as anything new. This of course is a generalisation but it does have merit.
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻

Had the same experience seven years ago. Total waste of money.
It's a shame, as a good custom fit can give a golfer a real insight into their swing, why they do what they do and how they do it. There are good facilities out there, where golfers aren't going to be sold something, it's something that I suggest people do a bit of research where to go before doing it 👍🏻
🔥🔥Very helpful, thanks Jay! 🔥🔥
While I'll always advocate for custom fitting, it's a problem for me because I'm 6'6" and the standard 7 irons that are used in fittings, including the Mizuno Swing DNA are way too short. So, thinking about it now, because it was so difficult to get the club onto the ball, I didn't go hard at it. The #1 recommended shaft was KBS C Taper which I despise so I went with #2, the Project X LZ.
Would really like to know your DNA numbers for the No1, shaft to be a C Taper and the No2 be an LZ....... 🤔👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good and interesting as always Jay…..
Very, very informative. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Great vid.
Wow. Great stuff this. Thanks Jay.
Glad you enjoyed it, a bit more real world strikes and club deliveries in this one 🙂
@@AskGolfNut really informative. Used the dna swing analyser a couple of years back in a lesson, just to see what was happening, by my action. But this video is a different level. 👊🏻
Great video!
Great video 👍
Great piece of kit imo. Q: is the device calibrated to the characteristics of the shaft it’s attached to? Is the fitting shaft quite ‘soft’ so it can ‘feel’ what the player is doing to it?
I believe the shaft is a standard regular flex but linear bend profile graphite shaft, so it allows the forces that the golfers exerts on the shaft to be easily measured. Also with a linear bend profile, it's a lot easier for the algorithm to do the arithmetic needed to show how golfers offend one part of a shaft more than another.
What's shocking to me is the amount of custom fitting facilities that don't use it, let alone don't use it to it's fullest potential 👍🏻
Thank you for presenting with integrity and absent hyperbole.
jay, just a question, i've seen this used for irons, but for woods do golfers, esp for drivers load the shaft the same way (AoA up rather than down etc.) or does that not make a difference?
Hi Adrian, my own personal opinion (I'm not saying this is an official thing to suggest) but I had great success using the Optimiser in a wood fitting, by putting the ball on a small tee, pushing the ball position up and getting the golfer to simulate a more of a driver swing. Tried it normally to start and didn't get the results with the golfers that I was expecting. As soon as I moved the ball position forward and put the ball on a tee it made a big difference to the fitting result 👍🏻
Fantastic video Jay, thanks! Does the the analyzer try to best fit the measured values to a database of "successful" fittings, or is there something about the values themselves that indicate the best shaft stiffness profile? Is there a way to limit the choices to graphite? I'm interested in trying graphite in my next irons to hopefully reduce or eliminate some elbow pain. Will any Mizuno fitter have access to this tool, or only specific ones? Does it consider other OEM stock shafts, or just Mizuno stock offerings and specialty shaft companies?
Thanks again for a very educational video!
Matches the swing profile to our custom options - which are mapped out in the software. We measure them all independently and the aim is make sure that map of shafts covers 99% of swing profiles.
Got fitted for new Mizuno irons at Golf Galaxy and was curious why they didn't use this instrument in the fitting. Just used Trackman data. I did try 4 different shafts though and settled with the Recoil 460s.
Hmmmm unfortunately this practice is a common occurrence and also common is the realisation after purchase that the clubs in question either don't feel right on the course or worse that they are totally unplayable. I really hope that your irons continue to work over time. Fitting NG using launch monitor data only refers to what golfers see as kick point in shaft affecting trajectory, overall consistency of flight (dispersion etc) is achieved when bend profile is matched to how the golfer offends the shaft 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut Thank you for your reply and sharing your knowledge.
Jay, love the content and wish I had done this before buying my current set. I love the irons (JPX 923 Tour). A couple of questions. Firstly, why no graphite options, they can be heavier or lighter, stiffer or softer for any relative speed? Secondly about the 923 Tours, why is the 7 iron 34 degrees and the 8 32 degrees as standard, seems like too small of a gap to me, though it seems to work out in the real world with about a 10 yard gap.
It is true that there are a boat load more steel options than graphite, but that is due to Mizuno selecting shafts to purchase from shaft manufacturers which fit into what the Swing DNA Shaft Analyser sees that golfers need. Out of all the options there are 9 graphite options, so yes not as many as steel but still there are some.
On the 2nd point, the standard lofts for the JPX923 Tour are 34 7 iron and 38 8 iron. They can be adjusted from traditional lofts to modern lofts etc, but that would only see the 7 iron reduce to 32 degrees. An 8 iron at 32 degrees, you'd have to go into the JPX923 Hot Metal lineup to find an 8 iron around that standard loft number 👍🏻
Since the DNA system came out, I’ve tried to use it countless times. It’s always the same response, “It’s broken”. PGA Tour Superstore/Dick’s/Golf Galaxy/independent store…doesn’t matter. What are the odds that they’re ALWAYS broken, EVERYWHERE, at the SAME time?
Absolutely none! I've heard the very same thing too many times unfortunately. I ran mine for years and years, sometimes the batteries die as batteries do from time to time (won't hold a charge) and Mizuno get it uplifted and returned asap. It's basically a ploy to allow them to fit you into what they feel like fitting you into (whether that profit margin related) and be able to complete a fitting without any verifiable information 🤦
It used to drive me barmy when golfers came to see me and hadn't been fitted correctly and wondered why the struggled to use their brand new shiny equipment. Doing things right the first time is the best way forward 👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut Exactly!
Could you consider doing a modern blade vs modern game improvement loft for loft distance forgiveness breakdown such as pro 221 vs hot metal pro. Think it world be interesting to see the results for someone with swing speeds similar to yours or mid/high 80’s
Would need loft bending on one of the two irons as they don't blend seemlessly with the lofts...... 🤔🤔🤔👍🏻
Quite interesting that you let a DNA tool make a lot of choices for the customer, but not for you.
And lie angle is about the most important thing of all next to loft in my experience. Let say the customer plays a either firm or soft course most of the time, those lie numbers are totally out of whack, and especially if the fitter doesn't have club data on their launch monitor.
This is especially noticeable in the scoring irons and wedges where lie adjustments really gets you much better results and shorter putts :)
Hi Marcus, I'm one of the small percentage of people that aren't affected by shaft. I've explained before in a few videos on the channel that due to how I pull on the grip during transition it means I'm not affected by even huge shaft changes in weight or flex. Handy considering manufacturers send media samples in many different varieties 😁
But yes you are absolutely right, dynamic lie is massively underrated by fitters and rarely properly fit correctly due to the misunderstanding with how dynamic lie changes as the face rotates. The importance of getting a neutral lie angle depending on the strike pattern of the golfer is essential, especially if the golfer has no understanding of how to manipulate lie. I could talk forever on the intricacies of dynamic lie and the absolute importance of it 😊
Interesting it recommended a stiff DG, but everything else was X.
When I did it, it recommended KBS C-Taper X, Dynamic Gold X100, KBS Tour X. I didn't like the C-Taper at all. It matched my own self testing which I came to DGX100. The KBS Tour launched really high. I went to the largest fitter in USA and had a horrible fitting, and he swore because I was a new golfer I needed a Stiff and kept pushing Oban's I couldn't make solid contact. The complete opposite profile of Dynamic Gold. He refused to let me test "stock" shafts and I left buying nothing at all. Through self testing at my local store I came to the conclusion that no matter what it is, stiff is just too soft and I don't make good contact. I was hitting X100 farther than any stiff flex I ever hit. The Modus 120 and PX LZ which were similar to the Oban he recommended and said nothing was like it, I couldn't make consistent contact.
Head Speed 92.33, Tempo 6.67, Toe Down 4.0, Kick Angle 6.0, Release Factor 3.00
interesting and frustrating! I feel like a majority of people that work in a pro shop now carry the title "certified club fitter" and it is challenging to find someone who has the knowledge plus doesn't want to just sell you something they have in inventory
Absolutely agree. The only marker which isn't fool proof, but, generally if it's a paid for fitting that can lead to a more unbiased result, again not fool proof though 👍🏻
if i were able to purchase one of those Mizuno Optimizers, would I need some sort of approved access for the software you pair with it?
@@AskGolfNut
Jay, I would have thought the best way to measure Lie would be to build the test club, and do it on the GC with face measurement tech. You're trying the shaft, just read the numbers! But you do need face measurement, and not all have it.
DNA used to be based on a 6i, and now is a 7. The angles may be similar in practice, but I certainly hit my new 7 better than my old 6. Any difference here for you?
Not really to be fair, all the new heads just have a half inch shorter hozel to make up the length difference to the old 6i spec.
I would always take lie measurements from the built custom spec directly from the cart. They come with A and B heads so getting lie readings using Quad with the custom fitted shaft and head combo is easy and the best practice 👍🏻👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut length noted! My previous old set (first DNA) had IRON weight heads on Graphite shafts - and that was already after the 1" long game. My current were the second shaft the new DNA suggested. Both 2 upright - the first with a lie board, the second not.
Jay, any inside information regarding a new Glide wedge release from Ping? I see that they just discounted the pricing of the current series.
Pop on next week's live stream and remind me in the chat, and we can discuss then 👍🏻😉👍🏻
Hi Jay, do you have the Ping i230 irons for fitting? Also if so, do you have a long iron and short iron? e.g. 4 or 5 and 9 or wedge?
Unfortunately Ping only supply fitting heads in 7 irons so it is a bit of a pain when fitting as trying to explain what the differences are especially when the manufacturer makes a point of saying that there is yet doesn't supply dummy clubs to demonstrate 🤦 still the size isn't massive at all, but for most golfers they need to transition into something more, functional and easier to hit by the time they get to longer irons 😊👍🏻
Hi Jay where do you do your fittings? Thanks
Since concentrating on RUclips I have stepped away from Custom Fitting, I only now do Coaching sessions by appointment only currently. This may or may not change in the future depending if the facility that I am attached to 'The Golfers Lounge' changes its stance on stocking custom fitting equipment. 👍
Yeah !!
Hope you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Hmm. I wonder if I helped inspire this video from the comment on the JPX forged vs ZX5 video. lol
That and @sloswingspeed9535 has been asking me for ages to do a video 😊👍🏻
How accurate is it concerning what weight of shaft one needs ?
Very, but what's best about the whole fitting tool/software combo is that once you know what bend profile you require, you/the fitter can alter shaft weight yet still attempt to stay as close as possible to your measured profile so you get the feel you want and the best performing bend profile 👍🏻
Can you buy or rent it?
I don't believe you can, however all Mizuno Fitting Centres are given them as its their primary tool for fitters to use. When I used to Coach and Custom Fit full time I often ran quick 10 minute session where golfers wanted to quickly check their equipment. Utilising this can quickly tell a golfer if their shaft requirements have either changed or their shaft needs are different to that which they currently have 👍🏻
LOL. Don't know how many viewers will remember Zorro :-)
Great analogy though 😁👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut Yes indeed!
