  • Don't tell my husband anything discussed in this video j/k. This conversation is such an uncomfortable conversation to have but I think we need to normalize the price of custom quilts. Yes, they are expensive but I think they are well worth it. If someone has made a quilt for you just know how much they really must love you.

Thank you so much for posting this! Your pricing of fabrics & longarming are spot on, even 2 years later. I totally agree that quilt shop quality fabrics definitely have a distinctly quality look, feel, and hand - and this is even more true for the top designers, like Tula Pink & Kaffe Fassett. I am "only" charging $10/hour for my quilting, but I live in a much lower economic area of the country. My personal philosophy is to charge what the market will bear, because you can always raise your prices as you gain in experience and skills. Wishing you all the best, Anne

I live in Alberta, Canada and quilt shop quality fabric here, costs $23 to $28 per meter (yard) so can you imagine what quilts are worth here! I sew primitive dolls and sell in a small shop, but people don’t understand the labour involved, coffee dying, sanding, & painting my black dolls, as well the shop takes 30%. I am very arthritic and 78 years young! It is very tricky to price hand makes. I also make small quilts but have decided to keep them for myself. I also have Tula Pink fabric - love the Alice collection, am scared to cut it yet! Haha🤗

Two years ago I went to a Large Quilt show locally on the last day of the Show. I enjoyed seeing the skill of the many quilters but mainly wanted to see the different Retail booths as sometimes they carry fabrics our local shops may not carry. One booth had 3 ladies sitting and chatting surrounded by several quilts that were for sale as well as wildlife panels (I like panels) and as it was the last day of the show the quilts were marked down. I couldn’t afford the king size bear quilt, but saw a lovely hydrangea floral print with scripture verses a little under queen size for a shocking $140.00! I had to buy it and made a comment that I could not get a quilt that size long armed for that price let alone buying the fabrics! The woman was there who made it (she owns her own long arm) and I just gushed to her about how much I loved it (later realized how that may have been painful for her to hear). I also bought a cougar panel and pattern - and the next week contacted her to purchase the fabric for the cougar panel pattern that she had designed. I wanted to give her more business. I love the quilt and though I make quilts as well, I will always treasure it and realize what an awesome price I got it for. ❤

My local longarmer charges 2.75¢ per square inch. And...you have to make an appointment five months in advance. She's booked all the time.
Used to spin my own yarn. Crocheted a hat of raw wool, and wore it into work. An associate asked me to make her one. I said sure...it'll cost $25. Her answer was that she could get one at Wal-Mart for $3. I told her that that was the one she really wanted.
Met a woman who made her niece a king size quilt for a wedding present. Two years later at a family gathering at her niece's house she found the quilt folded up in a wooden box on the back porch...I T
WAS THE DOG'S BED !! When she left she just took it with her. They never missed it.
Had someone offer me $100 to make her a quilt. Told her I had that much in thread.

I just found your channel. Yes quilting is expensive. I do my own quilting with my domestic sewing machine. I began quilting 7 years ago and love the craft. However, I do not take commissions. To me the quilts I make are works of art and love and are heirlooms. So happy I found your channel. You are a delight.

In my opinion many quilts are really quite priceless. I’m currently working on a crib quilt for my first grand baby. I probably spent around $100 on everything for this quilt (including some necessities like a little cutting mat, new rotary blades, a good square, some needles, and thread etc. besides the fabric, and yes, I special ordered some fabrics from spoonflower.
Yes, altogether definitely over $100. I spent literally COUNTLESS hours planning my quilt design, and cutting and piecing everything. And because I love to, I’m doing all the quilting by hand, small Amish style stitches, and pretty tight (less than one inch) spacing.
Honestly, if someone were to pay me minimum wage to make this quilt, the price would be insane. But it’s a gift of LOVE for my daughter and her precious little firstborn baby! I am overjoyed to make this. I hope they love it as much as I do.
But if I were to try and sell it, no one could or would pay me what it’s actually worth in materials, time, and craftsmanship.

I also wanted to tell you. About the luxurious specialty quilt shop fabrics, and batting, for this crib quilt, I actually bought most of my fabrics at Hobby Lobby, and WalMart. BUT! I honestly didn’t know any better.
Then, one day (after I already finished the quilt top) I stopped into a quilt shop to get some advice, and I could not believe the difference in the fabrics they had compared to what I was used to at Hobby Lobby and WalMart.
The next time, I definitely want to go to a real quilt shop for my fabrics.
I also have since learned that there are much nicer battings available in the world. I really wish I had used a nicer one for this baby quilt.
      Ahhh… next time!

Thanks for the video. As a longarm quilter and quilter in the Midwest I offend people with my pricing and don’t even come close to the prices you were taking about. What the customer doesn’t know is how much you have invested and you are insulted by their reaction to your quoted price. Always alway appreciate the talents that other people have and that you are asking them to do. If you can afford it be polite and I quote “I know it’s well worth the cost but at this time it’s not in the budget” or “ I need to save.
I am so blessed to have found your video’s and am loving them. Although I have been quilting for many years I am new to the wax fabrics and have fallen in love. Thanks for the blessing. Never to old to open your mind to all the beauty of the world. You are a true beauty!❤️❤️

I was just looking at Princess Tiana fabric yesterday and I was shookith lol.
Whenever family or friends ask me to make something for them I might agree if they purchase the supplies before hand. Jusy because I love you you might get free labor, but the rest is gonna have to come out of your pocket book.
Half of them rethink it once they see the supplies cost alone. The other half will pay for supplies and a small fee for labor. I don't sell anything, I mostly do decor for baby showers and other gathers.

I was just telling someone today that I never pick cheap crafts or hobbies, and this proves it. After I finished my first quilt my sister claimed it and my mom promptly put in her request for a king size. totally legit discussion. Working on a Queensized quilt with Liberty London Tana Lawn in nearly 300 prints. Just sourcing the fabric in fat or regular quarters is something I don't want to think about the cost. Obviously this is going to a pro custom long armer. It makes the point about the cost of an above quality quilt.

Truth! I’m the same when friends mention buying a quilt from me. I’m like yeah no. First I have a long list of quilts I want to make for family/friends then there’s the quilts I just love and want to make. Second people do not want to pay what a quilt is worth. So I just say no to that conversation.
