  • I recommend you watch the whole video before you attempt this. I did describe it and show it being removed and some of the reinstallation critical points. It would be best if you have your vehicle as high as possible off the ground as long as it is safe. I hope very much that video helps you and that you enjoy watching it I did have a couple corrections that I made during the video and I made a mistake by saying I was putting the axle in on the passenger side when I was putting it in on the driver side this includes critical clayism’s that will help you get through life easier lol
    This this information will show you how to remove and replace your rear differential on your 2001 through 2009 Ford escape, Mercury mariner and Mazda tribute models

    I can't believe that you have a vehicle lift but don't have a trouble light. Thanks for trying.

    You do it the hard way. I used a port a power to push it apart and the axles come out. Pull the axles back in with a come along. Done the easy way.

    For safety reasons, disconnect the negative battery first, not the positive. The end result is the same, but if you touch ground with the wrench, while disconnecting the Positive first you can create a large spark, doing the negitive first you do not, on a negitive ground vehicle

    Did you swap out the rdu... or did you find replacement parts for the pinion gear... do have any video for ford edge and rebuilding a rdu.

    My rear diff is going on my 2005 Ford Escape. I removed the drive shaft and made it into a front wheel drive for now. Because the rear axles are still in the diff the grinding is still there. Can I remove both axles or can I remove the ring and spider gears so I can still drive it without the harsh grinding until I can get another rear diff

    Hey. I'm getting a growling noise from the rear when I make sharp turns on my 2012 4WD escape. It drives fine otherwise. Do you think I have a bad rear diff or is this normal? I don't get the noise when i remove the 4wd fuse.

      More than likely rear differential is just fine from what you’re telling me I think it’s a possibility that you have a bad wheel bearing so in this video I show you the procedures that I use to check for bad wheelbearings let me know what you think I hope it’s helpful.

    Thanks for this great video! On low speed turns sometimes my rear end makes a loud thump as if a car hit me. Is this a bad rear diff?

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  4 года назад +1

      Hey Jimmy it’s could be that or you have a bad carrier bearing on your driveshaft so take a look at your driveshaft and make sure that your center bearing is good on it.
      From your description it does sound like you have a bad rear differential I hope that’s helpful for you and I wish you the best sorry to give you the bad news God bless and have a great day

    Could I just take out spider gears and just delete the whole 4 wheel drive by taking out the drive shaft and just making it front wheel drive?

    What year of escape is that? I have a 2013 and that looks nothing like the one I have. I was told that Ford makes no parts to rebuild the 2013 rear differential and that I have to buy the whole assembly at about ouch I wasn't expecting that.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад

      2013 is the first year for your body style this is from the old body style,
      What is it that needs to be replaced in the rear end?
      Is it four-wheel-drive?

    How do you take the cover off

  • @oby-1607

    Can the rear differential be removed permanently? I have already removed the driveshaft and am only using front wheel drive right now. I want to remove the rear diff to help a little with the fuel economy and get rid of one more thing that can go wrong. Once the rear diff is gone, probably the half shafts can be pulled out too.

      I’m pretty sure they can . But I don’t want to tell you to do it because I’ve seen wheel bearings fall apart because they didn’t have the axle to hold them together .
      So I think there’s two things you should do before you attempt it . Look at a 2 Wheel Dr. version and see what the wheel bearing looks like . If there is a hole in the 2 Wheel Dr. version then I would think you would be OK .
      If there is not then cut the ends of your axles off and leave them inside the wheel bearings .
      This is just a theory but I believe you should be OK sorry I can’t be responsible and I wish I could tell you for certain have a good one good luck let us know what happens

      Thank you for those points. I have a 1999 F150 where the front diff burnt up and deleted it. I had to cut the half-shaft at the wheel, ground it smooth and bolted it back on as it retained the wheel. I've run that way for 2 years and no problems. This is a farm market truck that only sees highway and is off the road in September. I have a F350 and F250 in 4 wheel drive setups, so I don't need the F150 in the winter.
      With the Escape, right now it gets about 27 mpg and I am trying to get to better than 30 mpg.

      Oby-1 I wish I got anywhere near 27 miles to the gallon in my escape but let us know how it goes and then that will help other people in the future started in a new thread conversation if you get it completed and share

      emosh73 Or you can just buy one that matches the other ones but yes you need to replace the tires all at one time generally you should be able to get a brand new set of cheap Chinese tires but right around $350-$450 installed brand. Or you could find a good quality used set

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  4 года назад

      Well you can put any tire that you want on the vehicle. If they are dramatically different sizes they will change the speed of the reluctor rings at the wheels.
      Putting the wrong size tires on different wheels make the tires move at different speeds. This makes the friction between all of the moving components different rates.
      It’s a simple answer if you do not want things to wear out quicker replace all of the tires if the vehicle is not worth keeping for another 5 to 6 years just replace the one that’s defective with the one that’s similar in size.

    I'm confused as to why you wouldn't just remove the outer hubs. Could you imagine doing this on the ground in the driveway this way?

    Really? Is that you call easily? With hoist, jacks and other pair of hands. I thought easily means another than that.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  5 лет назад

      When I say things like that I definitely think about you folks at home yes a pair of jackstands and maybe another set of hands but I don’t know that it’s absolutely necessary I do think it’s a relatively easy job getting in and out from underneath the car is another story that’s not easy depending on how old you are sorry I wish I would’ve been a more help for you God bless have a great day

      Iurii Reshitnyk - pfft I just did this same job effectively three times: in the garage (3 hours), in the junk yard (2 hours). Reinstall about 1.5 hours. All hand tools and not a huge amount of experience. So, yes, it’s an easy job. The worst part is trying to remove the bracket that is near the gas tank BUT the diff can be jimmied out with that bracket in place AND I didn’t disconnect the lower control arms! BOOM!
      Edit: I did bash the shit out of my head a few times crawling under the vehicle and I’m 48. If you’re 49 I wouldn’t dare try this at home!!
