@@JR-playlists I agree Toyota has seemed to have completely lost their sense of design. Lexus has kinda resurrected some sedan models but it’s still really bad. Their engines are reliable and economical but seem to have lost that sporty feel. Ford has really improved the last couple years and I’m happy to see they’re starting to get it right. I will buy a Ford as my next car and keep it in good shape. I was skeptical of the ecoboost engine at first back in 2009 but Ford has had a long time to work out all the kinks. There is also a lot of good documentation on this drivetrain so I can do all the right preventative maintenance and all those fun modifications to increase its lifespan.

I just bought my wife a 21 Hybrid Escape. In the past Tractors I bought always call for the first fluid changes very early in hours, so I was wondering why not cars. I changed her oil now I know about the rear end.

I have a 2013 global ford ranger and the dealer never changed the diff oil in 6 years. I changed it for the first time at jan 2020 and I think there was more metal dust than oil in whatever came out of that diff. Glad i did the diff oil change. Definitely recommended to change out all fluids in the first 1000 miles or so, not just engine oil.
Edit: i used teflon tape to seal the threads on the drain and fill plugs. No issues so far.

I’m a Ford guy but also a Mopar guy as well. Just curious on your thoughts of the Hemi “tick” and the cam and lifter failures they’ve been having in the 2009 + 5.7 and 6.4?
Ford blew it..........they should have increased the capacity to 1 1/2 quarts, so they could sell your two quarts at a time!

Thanks for another great video! Might I add one point? You mentioned to break torque on the fill plug so it vents to better drain the oil. That is true but the main reason I ALWAYS remove the fill plug first is due to the fact that if you remove the drain plug and drain out all the oil and then, for some reason, cannot remove the fill plug (like if it's seized, etc.)...then you're stuck with a vehicle you can't drive because there's no way to fill the diff.
I hear that comment all the time but have never seen a rusted fill or drain plug of this style in 20 years of working in the rust belt new or old cars.
@@FordTechMakuloco -That's great to know. I only experienced it once on the transfer case of a 1977 Jeep. I was able to eventually get it out but that experience trained my brain to just always do the fill plug first. Thanks for the quick input...I watch your videos all the time. You do a real service to us who like to work on our own vehicles. I do have one more question though...my wife drives a 2019 Escape. Could you do a video on typical maintenance of that? I'm worried about the AWD unit (I remember you did a video on how some Fords can over heat due to exhaust location or something so you recommend changing fluid more often). Also, a video on the rear diff of that year/model would be great. We're at 32k miles so after watching this video...I think I should do the diff fluid. Thanks!

Gear weights are chosen depending on the offset of the pinion gear. There is a science behind it, and it gets very complex. I was told this by Lexus. The rear diff in my Lexus speced 75w85. Not sure if the diff will explode if you use the wrong weight, but there is a best product to use.
Isn't the recommended Toyota/Lexus differential fluid 120+/- a quart?
For those with a bronco sport, same procedure and same exact fluid for either 1.5L/2.0L according to service manual.

Top tip to not cross-thread any fastener or plug is to turn it counterclockwise and feel for the thread start. That ratchet against the pipe sound is the more cowbell everyone asks for.

Ignore the oil life monitor and change every 3,000 miles. He has a great video on installing a catch can to the PCV system to help prevent fouling the intake valves. ruclips.net/video/v6h_FOzFMcs/видео.html

If you ask me I think it's some assembly lube in that original fluid ,but I could be wrong
Take same fluid and put in new bottle. Call it specific for the vehicle. Charge 3x what it's worth.
Thanks for a great video. There was a jet aircraft engine oil that cost the lab about a kilobuck per quart. Turns out it softened some plastics for us but it was really good in our high vacuum diffusion pumps for its extremely low vapour pressure in high-vacuum systems. How do I find a technical description of this expensive differential lubricant?

Wish the17-18 Ford Fusion Sport would have the drain plug on the RDU. If owners would do preventive maintenance, good for the new Escapes.
Hey quick question do you have any updates/new information on the 2018-2020 5.0 F-150 oil burning issue? Is there anything we can do about it or is it something that we can live with? Will it cause serious engine damage down the road? Are my cylinders being damaged? I plan on doing the consumption test, all TSB’s and putting a catch can on to help with it. Don't wait. Do the consumption test. If it burns enough oil, you should have no problem getting a new motor. The most important thing is the dealership. Some dealerships hate doing heavy line work and will try to get rid of you. Other dealers, like where I work, are set up to do big jobs, and want to take them in. So, if you don't get the answers you want at one dealer, try different ones. Don't be afraid to take it to a Lincoln only dealer either. They work on Ford branded vehicles as well.

do you think the 2020+ is a better design overall? Have a 2016 and hate the non-serviceable fragile trans, have the 2.0 which hopefully remains the reliable option. Hearing some initial build issues but if the overall design is better I may take the plunge

I have 2015 Taurus SHO and it has the rear differential same as the 2013 to 2019 Escape. Got the old "filled for life" BS and I was curious how to make that process easier?
I was planning on putting it on a lift myself and sucking out the fill plug by removing with a very thin 3/8 inch ratchet and then pumping what I sucked out. Dealer wanted to remove entire rear end and pull the entire rear differential, about $1000 quoted to service a rear end.... my god.

Always be sure that you can get the fill plug out, before you drain the differentral. You want to be sure you can refill it
@fordtechmakuloco My 2020 F150 calls for 75W-85 gear oil for the differential. Should I use that or the 75W-140 like you mentioned in another video. You were saying all the axles take the same fluid now or something like that.

All diffs should be designed like this, if only they could add a dip stick, drain bolt, and spin off filter for automatic transmissions then DIYers would never see a transmission shop.
YES!!! Nothing more annoying than changing trans fluid 36 times just to get it totally changed once.
Modern transmissions have lifetime fluid.
You know when the fluid's lifetime is up when the transmission slips. For FCA, about 75k miles.

That drain plug cost ford 5 cent's per vehicle. Expect that to be eliminated next year.

I would have never bought that quart it’s exactly the same synthetic gear lube. Not like there’s some special diamond powder or newborn blood.
I have a 2021 escape with the 3 cyl. 1.5 ecoboost. I use it for work and am nearing 90,000 miles. No trouble so far. The wet timing belt makes me nervouse and these dealers have no education about the wet belt. It has a 150,000 mile service recommended? Is this something you can do?
So will this diff inevitably have issues like Ford’s older and more problematic PTUs?

I wish to have a video to on how to change the 2017-2019 2.0L Spark Plugs. The engine is not a natural fit for the car. Looks like some manifold and the cowling that needs to be removed. Seems to have a harder time than old other engines for this generation of a escape.
Great video as always. $60 a qt because it only takes one qt so they wont sell as much. If each differential took 4 qts im sure the price would be lower .

Is there a reliable site or sheet what transfer case/ diff/ tranny fluids recommended utilizing modern fluid availability, for older Fords. Have a 98, 04 and 05 5.4. Sometimes I get a weird look at the parts stores.

I know the PTU or Center Diff was an issue (Cooking Fluid, No service interval) on all the earlier AWD crossovers. How does the the 2020+ AWD Escape look? Easy process?

I feel like Ford is making better steps for fluid services on the latest vehicles, take away that F150 trans service which is still a pain. I also noticed they don’t have nearly as many “lifetime” rated fluids which was a failure.

@@joeythedime1838 Serviced my 2013 RDU several times. The only way is to suck the fluid out since it doesn’t have a drain plug. I found a fluid extractor that works with my cordless drill. Works great but it’s a messy job no matter how you slice it.

$60 per quart with 5 or 6 quarts required over the life of the vehicle doesn’t sound like a huge investment. I’m guessing that diff is probably $2500+ to replace so it’s cheap insurance.
my awd edge 2015 has only 24,500 had diffs done at dealer and ptu change dealer says kind of early, nope please change it cheap maint.
you said to break the fill loose to help vent . no vent on these??? thats how i know the vent is working when draining diffs- leave the fill plug in and see how it drains. sometimes you can even hear it. yeah ford is good about making expensive lubes. i remember late '70's the grease for cv joints had whale oil and a small tube to do just one was 70 bucks.
Of course there is a vent like any other driveline component. The reason I say to remove the fill plug to fully vent the diff is to prevent the glugging effect as the fluid is evacuated. Its best to fully vent so the fluid can rush out as seen here and bring as much of the sediment on the bottom of the case with it.
