I agree with about the value being a bit iffy, buuuut... that's honestly been the case with most Secret Lair Drops in my experience. The value is in the unique(-ish) treatment (the least unique being the Jumpstart lands). These fefature new game pieces and reprints that mostly (if not entirely) justify* the prices. *justification being relative to your hobby budget, investment in MtG, etc. Here I'm talking about secondhand market value of non-unique cards compared to bundle prices
I want to run an Ice Storm in a Garth One-Eye deck I'm building for flavor's sake, so I'm kinda thinking about getting the Storm pack, too. Then again, having a crossover version card in the deck isn't exactly flavorful.
i'll probably proxy them, until they put secret lair back to print to demand AND consistently do the universes within i wont buy any more of them. i know im not their whale target but i bought a few when they where worth it to me like the bitterblossom one, the seb mckinnon set, and the sheldons commander one but im not gonna be led around by the nose on this stuff for unique cards.
T'Challa is actually super flavorful when you consider that he's a king and part of what makes him so dangerous is that he's the world greatest diplomat who can move people and things around to get things done better than anyone else.
Old school fan of both mtg and wolverine. Regenerate on wolverine is perfect. Yeah Yeah he's become Cell nowadays but his healing factor used to only be *accelerated* not a proxy for immortality. In the early days his arm got mauled by a dinosaur and it meant something for like 2 issues. Now it wouldn't mean anything in two panels.
Jeska's Will with storm shouldn't need you to select modes unless someone removes storm post combat damage which is unlikely. The storm effect will still be applied of course.
Cap and Iron Man are the ones that interest me most. Cap is one of my favourite avengers, and I want to build Iron Man as a multiple combat steps commander.
You think if I manage to get either the Captain America or Wolverine Secret Lairs, I'd be able to keep Flawless Maneuver/Berserk + Ozolith reprints to replace the ones in my commander decks, and then sell off the rest of the Secret Lair cards alongside the non-UB copies I removed from my decks to make back the money I spent?
I'm really tempted by Storm. She's one of my favorite character's and the art's amazing and the mechanics are interesting, so all in all it seems good. But yeah, like you said, it is a lot of money
I wanted Iron Fist, aside from personal tastes, like his power set actually fits in perfectly fine mix for the worlds of magic. We already have a ton of monks and martial artists and spirit magic and stuff like that.
I really want to build black panther , because putting counters on lands that can turn into creatures can be to me very funny. Also the best commander to use one of my favorite mythic from brothers war, awaken the woods.
I am disappointed they aren't doing commander precons for the Marvel stuff. I am going to buy the Captain America set. I don't think its any more expensive than something like the Ghostbusters stuff that just came out or practically every other set I've seen released (like the Junji Ito one I bought).
I'm gonna assume these aren't in the commander decks, because this was always the case in Universes Beyond SL's. Unless they said otherwise and I missed it. Because if they are alt arts of the face commanders...that means 5 decks...
Storm is completely broken but I think its something that is very telegraphed and you know exactly what kind of game you are playing. Storm is a level 4 card.
I think Wolverine should have had something more focused on undying (though your free passive trigger regenerate would also be sick). I feel like making it so Undying can trigger infinitely is the right way to go, I'm thinking with another ability that removes +1/+1 counters on wolverine (meaning undying can trigger again) and putting it on something else (Adamantium Skeleton) which gives Wolverine +X/+X dependent on the number of +1/+1 counters on it. This sorta gameplay would reward making Wolverine die again and again only to come back stronger and stronger.
Just to clarify, you don't get to choose different modes when you copy a spell unless you're CASTING a copy. Otherwise you copy all the choices for that spell (kicker/modes/X/etc)
@PleasantKenobi while target is a good call out (as something that does change), you only choose new targets when it's specified in the effect copying. Which to be fair, is almost always (storm is a perfect example of when you can choose new targets). But there are plenty of copying effects that don't allow you to change targets. That and generally speaking, tutors don't have 'targets' unless you mean the few times it says "target player". If you cast a demonic tutor for example there are no targets. Same for something like Traverse the Ulvenwald (which has different eligible choices while searching depending on spell mastery). For example if you cast Traverse with no spell mastery, you search for a basic land. If someone copies it and they have no basic lands, they also search for a basic land. But if someone copies it while having spell mastery they can search for any land or a creature (as it resolves). But it never targets or chooses that. You don't have to tell your opponents what you're going to find.
Super comic book nerd for almost 50 years. I requested the day they go live off work. I would like a set of all 5 plus a spare set for later. I've already had 3 other people request full sets so I'm currently looking to pick up 6 sets in a mix of regular & foil. I also have a large amount of store credit built up at Card Kingdom specifically so I can go hog wild on whatever regular products they offer (who needed those pre-2012 foils anyway?).
I was hoping that when they switched to limited print run Secret Lairs, that they would no longer do mechanically unique cards in them. Well here we are confirming my fears. I can't see this as much past some high-ups in WotC not caring about accessibility in favor of profits. Game pieces should be easily accessible to everyone. This is why I think they should be collectable pieces, not game pieces.
@12:00 I agree, storm seems so interesting to build, but I would be worried even when you try to make it jank you can just do some broken stuff, like storming jeska's will or creating multiple copies of storm and giving your next card like storm *10 or dopplegang with storm seems funny.
Y'know, I've never understood how the archetype came to be called "Voltron" when it is very clearly "The Centurions". Taking a dude and loading them up with a ton of gear and upgrades was the Centurions' gimmick.
Because Voltron is formed from the combination of multiple individual pieces to form a much stronger singular fighter. It's pretty obvious why Voltron stuck in a nerd hobby while Centurion is what some wannabe fascist LARPer who loves New Vegas' Legion would call themselves.
@@kylegonewild Voltron is multiple things MERGING to form a new thing, not a thing being loaded up with stuff. And I'm talking about the CARTOON from the same time as Voltron called THE CENTURIONS, not... whatever or whoever you're talking about.
Storm kinda represents what I hate about modern legendary creature design: she does everything herself. I get that thematically it makes sense but giving her flying makes the card a lot less interesting, if she was just a vigilant 3/4 youd have to actually put thought into how to get her to connect when building the deck but because she just has flying thats out the window and you can just load up the deck with storm pay off cards
You’d think so, but she specifically doesn’t draw you cards. Her ability is also extremely dependent on having cheap cards in hand to up the Storm count on your turn, so card draw is a massive weakness for her! Card draw and mana generation are the puzzles you have to solve, as well as protecting her from removal, since she’s a frightening commander. Overall, she isn’t the same as commanders like Voja, which do literally everything and a bag of chips while protecting themselves.
@@evanprimeau3810 Agreed plus her abilty to storm require you to do combat damage to a PLAYER with cmc 4 and no haste you have a full turn for the table to dealt with her.
What I think is odd is that there was no swamp commander at all during the panel. I mean, that’s why I think Black Panther should’ve been black and green.
with the heroes selected this time around, black doesn't really fit their identities. black will definitely be reserved for villains or more anti-hero style characters, like mercenaries
Really want to get the Storm one. Been wanting a Temur deck and a storm deck for a while and slapping them together and along side the it being Storm has pretty fully sold me
Unfortunately I am too susceptible to fomo, I don’t really see me not buying them unless I literally get boxed out by the wait times and it gets sold out. The one thing that is justifying it in my mind is that there is no way I see them going down in price since it’s marvel but that may be wrong. It’s not like I’d sell them but the thought that I could if I needed some cash is clouding my judgement.
The wolverine card should have been like: If wolverine would die from damage exile it with number of time counters on it equal to the damage dealt. He gains suspend.
They're going to sell for probably well over 200 each on the secondary market, so, I'd say they are actually a good bang for the buck. Everyone wants to make these commanders and they are extremely limited print and probably won't be reprinted in this decade after they sell out in 10 minutes. They are going to be extremely pricey.
the issue with this is, that every set has one of those "I want it because it looks so fun" cards - BP being the weakest of the packs imo with ozolith being fun but not 100% mandatory, Commander Plate in Iron Man which is insane and an auto include for every equip strategy (heck even for a monocolored commander), Cap, wolverine and storm looking incredibly incredibly fun and Jeska's will also being insanely good... I guess I'll get Storm because I'm missing a temur deck and don't want to play the generic landfall shenanigans (which I will absolutely build regardless of it being stormcentered)
I will buy the entire set if the website lets me. And I have never bought an entire Secret Lair before. Speaking of Secret Lairs anyone else recent get a survey asking about what kind of SL you would buy. Seems like after I said I would not buy foil/rainbow foils I ended up having to answer about 12 pages of why I would not want to buy foils/rainbow foils. And they seperated the two so I was having to say the reason (warping cards due to foiling) over, and over and over.
I really want to see Deadpool and Dr strange in this set including juggernaut including other famous marvel characters and I want to play juggernaut as a commander or even Dr strange or even Deadpool as a commander
Huh, I want to get a copy of them, maybe two. But with the hype already everywhere it might be tough to get through - unless they printed enough to last for a few days at least.
Might proxy Wolverine. Can't wait for a Universes Within version of the cards though. If they get made...still waiting for other SL designs to be made acessible.
What's the odds, considering we know they were communicating, that as much a WoTC warned the RC about the bans, they actually put their foot down about Sol Ring, because angering Daddy Disney is not wise... and this made things so much worse because they had to hand wave why Sol Ring dodged the bans? LOL.
You’re reading too much into it. They were never going to ban Sol Ring. Yes, that’s in large part because of what it does to precons in making them illegal in the format out the box, but that consideration isn’t about WotC’s wallet. It’s about new player experience.
Regenerate is primarily green and by that same token every color kills not just black, the way Wolverine kills is giving into his primal animalistic side. The real annoying one to me is Cap being Jeskai for the meme when he's such a quintessential mono-white character
@@Lucarioguild7 He seems like he would be more boros than mono white, and blue shows that he is also a tactician. I think besides the red white and blue being good for his theme, it also makes some sense with the that side of him, although for his abilities it doesn't really show any blue identity.
My take on Wolverine would be: ~ must attack each combat if able. If ~ would be exiled it is destroyed instead 1G - Regenerate If ~ is destroyed its controller must pay ~'s regeneration cost if able. Nothing can prevent ~ from regenerating.
Ah yes, a franchise crossover used to pull fans of marvel into magic, which is then locked behind a "print a few because we can't be arsed" premium priced service that 90% of players will never be able to have access to due to wizards not printing to demand. Wizards answer to this? "Let's give the players some dogshit universes within versions of the cards. The players wanted Wolverine so desperately but couldn't get the secret lair, so here is 'bonky, knife knuckles'. Then let's mash them into a random set in 6-8 months." Please, for the love of your grandma's best friends uncle's dog, stop buying secret lairs. Wizards are blatantly scamming us, and we are thanking them for it by purchasing them
I dont think its that folks will want the face commander, I think its that iff you want the Marvel staples of Sol Ring and whatnot, you need to buy all 5 of them. In saying this, I dont think this is overly expensive for whats a pretty unique product, But I do hope they also produce some marvel commander decks in the future
I was really disappointed by the representation of Wolverine's healing factor. For the longest time, I've wanted a card with an effect along the lines of "If [this card] would leave the battlefield, instead it doesn't.", and Wolverine felt like the perfect opportunity to make that happen. (The most efficient actual wording I've been able to come up with is "If [this card] would leave the battlefield, instead remove all counters from it and it phases out.")

Storm's storm is going to be doing some really evil things. My first thought was "Time Warp" and that was Kenobi's first choice too.
Not going to lie, Ice Storm reprint has me interested haha
I want to run an Ice Storm in a Garth One-Eye deck I'm building for flavor's sake, so I'm kinda thinking about getting the Storm pack, too. Then again, having a crossover version card in the deck isn't exactly flavorful.
I am going to join the queue for the entire set of cards
Iron Man dodging fight spells and white/black removal seems pretty good (talking about the Commander's Plate).
i'll probably proxy them, until they put secret lair back to print to demand AND consistently do the universes within i wont buy any more of them. i know im not their whale target but i bought a few when they where worth it to me like the bitterblossom one, the seb mckinnon set, and the sheldons commander one but im not gonna be led around by the nose on this stuff for unique cards.
Once you free your mind about a concept of authenticity and proxys not beeing correct, you can do whatever you want
Yeah... storm + umbra bear + size the day + that blue instant make her unlockable plus draw a card, you got your game there.
God I loathe universes beyond
Funkopop the game😅😅😅
The Fortnitification continues
Indeed
I absolutely love that token. You just need to put the s-mart slogan in the flavour text.
I am disappointed they aren't doing commander precons for the Marvel stuff. I am going to buy the Captain America set. I don't think its any more expensive than something like the Ghostbusters stuff that just came out or practically every other set I've seen released (like the Junji Ito one I bought).
Storm+Sword of Feast and Famine+an extra attack spell allows you to just go for the commander damage win
I'm gonna assume these aren't in the commander decks, because this was always the case in Universes Beyond SL's. Unless they said otherwise and I missed it. Because if they are alt arts of the face commanders...that means 5 decks...
I feel like to get across Wolverine’s regeneration, giving him persist would do it. But that would be pretty broken.
Tutors function different. New targets.
@PleasantKenobi
while target is a good call out (as something that does change), you only choose new targets when it's specified in the effect copying.
Out of 1 to 10 how powerful will the Storm deck be? Omega Level!!!
Double strike copy spells extra turns.😍
Been wanting a Temur deck and a storm deck for a while and slapping them together and along side the it being Storm has pretty fully sold me
I think they nailed the flavors on all the reprints
Wolverine: This Creature can't leave the battlefield
Storm loves some Savage Ventmaw and Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient.
That would be great! Also would be good with Deadpool
That would be much worse, He now keeps counters, because He doesnt die thx to regenerate
@@steamh4mmer264 not if you DONT regenerate it.
Secret Lair has never looked so good!
I honestly think Sword of Truth and Justice is a better flavor win for Cap than War and Peace
They are probably saving that for when/if they do a DC secret lair for Wonder Woman
Storm is easily my favorite… but I’ll never forgive whoever came up with “Ororo Borealis.”
Use black panther to defrost a dark depths, immediately getting Marit lage
Edit: Actually rereading it, you are incorrect, it specifies +1/+1 counters
I will buy the entire set if the website lets me. And I have never bought an entire Secret Lair before.
Speaking of Secret Lairs anyone else recent get a survey asking about what kind of SL you would buy. Seems like after I said I would not buy foil/rainbow foils I ended up having to answer about 12 pages of why I would not want to buy foils/rainbow foils. And they seperated the two so I was having to say the reason (warping cards due to foiling) over, and over and over.
I guess I'll try to get them, but if I cannot before they sell out, I won't be too disappointed
I’m so excited to get my hands on a storm storm deck! What copy of the printing am I going to get? Epson.
Two notes
Love the rhythm of the wild variant. It’s one of my favourite enchantments
“I’m terrified of how strong she is” lore accurate
What's the odds, considering we know they were communicating, that as much a WoTC warned the RC about the bans, they actually put their foot down about Sol Ring, because angering Daddy Disney is not wise... and this made things so much worse because they had to hand wave why Sol Ring dodged the bans? LOL.
very likely
You’re reading too much into it. They were never going to ban Sol Ring. Yes, that’s in large part because of what it does to precons in making them illegal in the format out the box, but that consideration isn’t about WotC’s wallet. It’s about new player experience.
Wolverine not having any black is wild to me. 90% of his whole thing is both killing and being able to regenerate. Thats all black all day
Regenerate is primarily green and by that same token every color kills not just black, the way Wolverine kills is giving into his primal animalistic side. The real annoying one to me is Cap being Jeskai for the meme when he's such a quintessential mono-white character
@@Lucarioguild7 I really do think he should have been Jund.
@@JacktheDoctor I could definitely be convinced he's jund especially early Wolverine just not for the reasons they stated lol
Originally green on 110 cards, moved more to black on 196 cards
@@Lucarioguild7 He seems like he would be more boros than mono white, and blue shows that he is also a tactician. I think besides the red white and blue being good for his theme, it also makes some sense with the that side of him, although for his abilities it doesn't really show any blue identity.
My take on Wolverine would be:
~ must attack each combat if able.
If ~ would be exiled it is destroyed instead
1G - Regenerate
If ~ is destroyed its controller must pay ~'s regeneration cost if able.
Nothing can prevent ~ from regenerating.
I want the storm and wolverine ones so much, but it’s such a hit to the wallet.
That’s Days of Future Past Storm on the lightning bolt. Or possibly Morlock era storm?
Ah yes, a franchise crossover used to pull fans of marvel into magic, which is then locked behind a "print a few because we can't be arsed" premium priced service that 90% of players will never be able to have access to due to wizards not printing to demand.
Wizards answer to this? "Let's give the players some dogshit universes within versions of the cards. The players wanted Wolverine so desperately but couldn't get the secret lair, so here is 'bonky, knife knuckles'. Then let's mash them into a random set in 6-8 months."
Please, for the love of your grandma's best friends uncle's dog, stop buying secret lairs.
Tbh Storm just seems like a slightly worse OG Narset at the end of the day, with very similiar play patterns but you'll have to jump through some minor additional hoops.
Expect the same reactions when playing her.
