  • Painting furniture to look like wood! How to do a French Faux Bois finish by layering glaze or stains!
    Get a beautiful raw wood look on ANY surface! I seriously love the French Faux Bois finish and this technique is the best way to get you there!
    1. PREP w/220 grit sandpaper, clean w/simple green cleaner
    2. PRIMER - Zinzer 123 tinted to the color “open canyon” by Behr (Home Depot)
    3. PAINT - Open Canyon by Behr Satin finish or any beige/taupe color of your choice, even white works!
    4. 1ST GEL Stain- Minwax Aged Oak (oil based) *Water based Alternative-Rustoleum Antiquing Glaze in Brown
    5. 2ND GEL Stain - Briarsmoke by Varathane (oil based) *Water based alternative- Smokey Grey Glaze effects by General Finishes
    6. FINAL Layer - White wash Pickling Stain by Minwax (yep, they still sell it) but any white wash product should do the trick
    Optional- Seal w/matte polycrylic topcoat, any clear coat works but I prefer a matte finish
    Ring Pulls

    Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

    Hi Shanon, I’m becoming a big fan of your channel, I love that RH look; I’m a furniture flipper and am always looking to differ from the rest, there are thousands of videos on how to paint with fancy expensive paints and unless you’re sponsored those expensive products can eat up all your profits; you are the proof that gorgeous finishes can be achieved with products that have been around for decades. Please don’t change your way, and your easy down to earth way of explaining the process. Best regards

    I noticed you took the time to put in a waterbased alternative for the glazes into your notes- that' s so awesome! Thank you for going the extra mile and saving me the time of figuring out a waterbased version! I'm in Canada and we really only have two months of the year that are warm. I have to work with my heater on and the garage door closed so much of the year that I stick with waterbased products. You rock!

    Of ALL the RUclipsrs for furniture make-overs I follow….you are my FAVORITE!!! It’s simple, use whatever you have…and your pieces are gorgeous! I have watched the “wood like finish” kitchen table…probably 10 times! Lol.
    I tried it, the broom, the deck brush and even the dog brush. My table is huge and round. I managed to prime it and do a gray wash but the gray took darker in areas then others. There seems to be no quick fix. In addition, I live in FL, so was was sweating my butt off and it was leaving stains. Any advice is appreciated!!! I LOVE your videos!

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  2 года назад +2

      Hey! Thanks for the kind words of support! You could try to dry brush and blend to soften the color contrast and cover flaws or you can use mineral spirits and wipe it off and redo. If I were you I would try the dry brushing, probably do a few different colors that are close in color and try and blend with a chip brush and wipe away after brushing with the paper towel to get a vey light amount in some spots

    Hi @blacksheephouse, thank you for posting so many wonderful tutorials. I actually tried to follow this video (my first faux wood staining experience) and one area I am having trouble is with staining. As I rub the stain from left to right I often start to see little particles in the stain that come from the stain and become stuck to the board. I can upload a picture if you’re not sure what I’m talking about. Wondering if you have any advice about this?

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  3 года назад +1

      That’s great! If you use chalk paint it will def absorb the stain more resulting in what I would guess will be a bit darker result buuut white chalk paint might counteract the extra darkness! Now I’m genuinely interested and may have to try for myself 🧐🙂

    Thank you for your videos. We are doing this technique to our old dining table. It had a thin veneer on it that couldn’t really be sanded and refinished with stain but this was the perfect solution. Did you use a water based paint for the base? I’ve read that an eggshell or semi gloss works best to keep the glaze from soaking into the paint, allowing it to wipe easier

      Hola!! Me alegra que hayas gustado mi video! Toda la pinta usada en ese video es base de agua. El gel que usé es base de aceite. Espero que haya entendido tu pregunta bien!!

    I am doing this now. How long between each coat of gel stain did you wait? I have the aged oak on and can't wait for the grey!

      Haha! I honestly didn’t wait long because the coats are so thin once you wipe them w/a towel. Try a spot and see if it takes away the aged oak coat and then you’ll know. I think I waited a few hours but it was summer so things dry faster

    Hi Shannon, I want to redo my bedroom set in this finish . My set has a lot of detail,crevices etc. would you say this finish is easier to accomplish on a piece that’s has less detail and more flat areas ? I’ve never done this before so I don’t want to mess it up!

    I can’t seem to find the list of the products you used for this. I’m in love with what you did here and want to attempt to replicate it on our kitchen table and TV stand. Could you let me know what you used and any recommendations for a top coat to seal it all once it’s done. Since it’s the kitchen table, I want to apply something that will protect it. Thanks!

      It’s all in the description, I switched to water based though these days. I’m using rustoleum antiquing glaze instead of Minwax gel stain

    Would you apply a water-based flat poly or oil-based poly *and I don't see a flat in the oil base?

      Varathane matte Water based poly is easiest and most matte finish I find

    I couldn't find the pickling white wash so was hoping you could suggest an alternative?

      Any brand of white wash found at hardware stores will do the trick or you can make your own white wash by watering down chalk or latex paint, cheers!

    Do you think this would work to some degree with a regular oil based stain rather than a gel stain? I have soooo many regular stains. Just curious if I could save some cost somewhere. You give me hope I can do the same. Looks so pretty!
