- Transform ugly laminate into REAL STAINED WOOD? YES! WATCH THIS VIDEO!
This video provides step by step directions to transform a laminate top into real wood using a product called "Liquid Wood" by Retique It.
The company says that the final results look just like real wood. I was not compensated by the company and I personally paid for the product. In this video, I provide my honest opinion of this product without being influenced by the company.
The French Provincial desk that I chose to use it on is a custom piece provided by a client. We had discussed staining the top and then antiquing the body of the desk. However, when I removed the two layers of paint on the top, I found that it was not wood but laminate!
Since I had my heart set on doing a stained top, I decided this was a good time to try Liquid Wood.

OMGosh, you just changed my entire life. And the money you just saved my husband on a new dining set...BLESS YOU ❤️
It’s does look good. To get finer detailed wood grain take one of your most worn out brushes and barely dip the tips into the stain then wipe it off on a towel. Wipe it til it looks like it’s all gone. Now very very lightly drag just the little hairs across the surface you want grain on. I did a light tan base then this technique, then tinted the clear top coat. It was amazing. It takes some practice but it’s better than the wood surfacing tool for giving you random grain both thick and thin. Did an entire old stand up piano with this technique. It was taught to me by a man with 40 years experience in furniture refinishing.
Wow Louise- Thanks for the info!!! I will definitely give it a try ! How did you tint the topcoat? Did you tint it darker or lighter? Did you use stain or paint? Was it a water based topcoat or oil base.
Wow! Thanks to you, him and the video 😃
That's not only a transformation, that's a masterpiece! Phenomenally great job! The piece by itself would sell more than an entire furniture group😉
This video was extremely well done and very very helpful!I'm a newbie at this, still trying to learn techniques and understand the wide variety of products. This approach will really help me with a project I'm going to begin soon. Thank you very much❣️
That’s remarkable! It does look like real wood. And, I also prefer the darker stain that you finished with. It looks fantastic.
Thank you very much! Give it a try- it is so easy! They have a facebook group and recently a woman posted a piece where she stained the base liquid wood coat a lighter color like antique walnut and the did another coat over the top and used the graining tool on it. She then stained that top liquid wood coat java. Wow! It was pretty dramatic. I thought you had to use a lot of liquid wood when you refinished a top so I purchased a gallon of it. OMG! I think it may last me for 5 years! LOL!
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit it just means that you have your work cut out for you!
Wow!! This is amazing. The final stain looks beautiful.

I thoroughly enjoy watching you do your craft. 🙌🙏💯 Simply incredible. Thank you
The top is absolutely beautiful! 😍
I just picked up a desk for home use, allthough it was free I found out after I got it home that it was an MDF top. I was hoping that there would be away to repair it to refinish rather than painting it. Wow did you come through, the example you did looks fabulous. Thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge.
This is amazing. Thank you for posting this project. I am going to try your technique on our new dresser.
Beautiful outcome 🤎 what a great product, thanks for sharing 😊

It looks beautiful. I’m so glad you got rid of the red/orange, love blue with brown.
Thank you so much! My client just loved it too. I like happy clients :-)
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I want to do this with my countertops in my kitchen. But I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to ever set anything hot on it or it will melt and or damage the countertops. I have wood laminate right now and I can cut on it, set things hot on it. And it's never done any damage. Even with 3 coats on to protect it after it's done, I still wouldnt trust it. What do you think??
Very interesting process! Good info to know! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent job. Turned out really pretty, I have a desk similar to yours I may try this technique

@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit Somewhere in RUclipsville I saw sawdust added to ? something and used as wood filler.
BEAUTIFUL JOB!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work 💕
Thanks Judith. This product is so cool!
Very stunning!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is such a great video!
Thank you so much!
Incredible work! Subscribed!
YEAH! Thank you!
What a game changer! This will allow salvaging sound but cosmetically poor pieces quickly and economically without being forced to paint. No more tedious, time consuming sanding only to find poor quality wood at the end. Using a graining tool on the “wood” would be even better. Thanks for sharing this technique with us!
Hi Clyde. You are so right! This product provides so many options now! Thanks for watching- I hope you become a subscriber.
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I’m a subscriber. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! The wood grained rollers look too fake. Brava!
For sure I want to try!,
It is really cool !
Well done girl.
Wow!
LOL! Glad you liked it!
I think I feel confident enough now to buy a 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon (Bus) kitchenette unit and do this to it. The older Bus's which we have, 1976 had a wood laminate looking unit that is impossible to find. The Vanagon unit is a beige laminate. UGLY. The other cabinetry in the Bus is a darker wood laminate. So now I'm confident in buying the Vanagon unit and applying this technique to it so it matches the other cabinets in the Bus. Thank you. Looks amazing.
This is amazing
Thanks Rinku. Glad you liked it. Give it a try!
Your tutorial was great! Thank you for your video! I’m working on refinishing a kitchen table and the laminate looks like a dark wood. To lighten it up before I add the liquid wood, should I paint it a light tan or prime it? Or would the liquid wood lighten it up to what I need first?
New sub here , & what a Beautiful job ! The table is Gorgeous !
Thanks and welcome!!
Way cool!
Agreed! I can think of so many things to do with this! Watch my dining room video... I did it on a dining room table when the top was ruined due to a particle board bubble. I tried a different way of applying it- way cool!
So pretty
thank you!
This turned out absolutely stunning beautiful job I just love this technique thank you so much for sharing have a great day my dear friend
Hi Cathy, Thanks so much! Nice to hear from you again. Go out and be creative!
I like the end result, tho I actually liked the retique it wood stain before all the dark stain was added. Good, informative videos. I'm very new at painting/making over my own furniture instead of buying.
Now you have options so when you use retique it you know what to expect. This is the first time I ever used it . I later used it on the dining room table and I used it a different way. Here is a link to that video; ruclips.net/video/_5_iBvGlEZs/видео.html
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit Thanks. I checked it out as well as some another how to paint laminate video. I am in the process of changing all mostly all of my dark wood furniture (bedroom set, bookshelves) to a lighter color. I wanted to watch videos on the retique it before I purchased. I instead used antique white stain as though it were paint and I love how it turned out with the light color. I have subscribed and will watch more of your videos.
So happy to see this product in action, you did a beautiful job and now I am planning a redo of my own. Thank You
Hi Donna. Glad you liked it. I used it on another flip and tried a different technique so I suggest you watch that one also. ruclips.net/video/_5_iBvGlEZs/видео.html
Lo e it, great job!
Great job! I do this with paint and glaze, using a shaggy chip brush, but may try the LW.🙂
This has texture that you cannot get with paint and glaze. That is what is to cool about it!
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I actually do get texture with mine. I apply the base coat, then brush on the other colors that I’m using and keep layering before they dry. It gives a really cool texture. The glaze actually accentuates the texture, as well. I hope to try your product soon. I love to try different techniques and products. You never know what kind of project will need something different. Happy painting!🙂
Have u used this with a darker stain!? Love this!!
this is magic 😆
Wow,,,I want to try that
Hi Dodd, It was fun! I will be using it in some upcoming flips. I did not think it went very far (boy was I wrong!) and I purchased a GALLON of it!!! LOL!
WOW
I just bought a vintage writing desk at the thrift store and I want to repaint it. The laminate on top is tacky. I want to try this technique on it. I hope it doesn't take a pro. Thanks for the video.
I enjoyed the thought of layering stain in lines and softening with the paper towel to give a grain that is less rustic than by rolling the tool.
Did you lightly sand in between coats? And before putting on the top coat after staining? If so, what grain? Thank you.
No I did not sand it. There was no need to and I was afraid I would sand off the stain. I should have sanded after the first top coat though. The final top coat would have been smoother. I also regret using an oil based top coat! It took so long to dry that I had bits of dust in it. I should have used water based floor polyurethane. Next time I will. Regardless, the client LOVED it and I know it is durable. I am just a perfectionist!
This is brilliant, can we do the same on dark laminate top as well or is it possible only in white laminate?

Thanks for sharing. I agree it's a game changer. Where did you get it?
I purchased it from Amazon. The link is on my blog. The link to my blog is in the video description. Thanks for watching. I am glad it was helpful. I agree- it's a game changer!!!
This is beautiful! I wonder if this can be used on floor.
Not sure- you should check with the company
It’s beautifully done. My question is how durable is it?
This is great! I have a huge formica dining set that I want to refurbish to a concrete look. Do you think this can be achieved? I'm new to all of this. Thanks.
Yes you definitely can if you use the right products. I would practice on card board to get the technique just right before actually applying it to the table. You can do it with paint but there are other products too. Just do research online and see what you come up with. I have never attempted to do the concrete look- just not my esthetic.
Can you do this to laminate kitchen counter tops? What kind of top coat should I use for durability.
Hi great job do you think this would work on laminate flooring 😊
Omg 👍
Can I do this to my laminate kitchen cabinets? Do I have to use stain?
I'm about to do my kitchen countertops. But I have a bad spot on the countertop. A small hole. What should I use to fix the laminate countertop before beginning? Any help is appreciated. Kind Regards 🌻
I would use an epoxy so it would be permanent
