I've been wanting to make a murphy desk in a inset in one of my walls (it's weird) but I was so pissed when I started because it looked nothing like what you had done but I kept at it and streaked the darker color (I used weathered grey and ebony...because that's all I found at HD) with the light grey and wiped and it actually turned out so perfect so a big, huge thank you! Edit: once I finished everything and got it set up perfect I ended up streaking ever so slightly with a satin white I was using to touch up a wall, i streaked and wiped immediately in thin lines and slightly curved long lines and it made the desk pop so much more. Thanks again for the help and good luck all!

I just did it and and easiest thing to do, I painted this dresser this silver chalk paint color and hate it flat so I wanted a rustic look. I didn't have a brown so took a forest green and added a little red, I test painted a box the same color as dresser then drug my DIY brown like she did then a little wheat color. New to this whole wood stain/weathered projects. Using it in my new home. Love your technique! Couple questions, What type of wood works best with these stains? Do you sand and use any kind of wood conditioner first? And how long do you leave the stain on before you wipe off? Would love to see an in depth video on how to do this with other stains as well 😊 great channel! Thank you
Amanda Kay thanks for watching! It works great on pine, white wood and Doug fir. I do sand lightly first. I wipe as I go like in the video so they mix together slightly and I do not use wood conditioner. I appreciate your questions I usually tell people to play around with scrap and see what you like 🙌🏼❤️ good luck!
Logan Riley thanks so much! I have not tried it on ply but it should work the same as long as it’s been pre sanded and possibly prestained to seal? Idk ply soaks things up crazy fast so practice first haha! thanks for watching! And for the comment!
I know this video is old but I wanted to ask if this technique can be used on plywood 🤔? Thanks for sharing this brilliant easy to follow technique 😊👌🏻
@@EternalHarvestDecor good idea! I think I'll get oak ply (if that's hardwood?) since oak ply has a lot of grain cathedral looking patterns and has depth variations which should allow for nice staining with the different colors 🤞🏻 Thank you so much. God bless and enjoy the rest of your weekend ☺️
Awesome stuff. I'm trying this on pine (2x6's) but the woods it's self is much more red and after I brush on if I wipe it shows the red grain through the stain . What should I try? I started with varathan pre stain conditioner waited about 40 minutes then use classic gray varathan and Jacobean.
great instruction vid! exactly what i was searching for, thank you. have you tried technique this on newly distressed wood? i have 12 fake rustic beams and 600'+ of tounge n grove, to try to match fake barn wood vinyl cupboards/ flooring to. its very close to your finish but maybe jus the 2 base colors with white, and the beams a shade darker gray than the t&g. my concern is that the distressed dimples will just be the last color applied and dimimish the effect or point of distressing. any advice that would save a step much appreciated.
Question. I love your technique, but what technique would you use in a situation where you have varnished dark furniture. I was planning and lightly sanding it and priming and start with a light base coat...then move to the stains. What's your opinion?
I really loved your video! I used the colors you used to make a sliding barn door and it turned out great but it’s a little too gray for my walls. I didn’t do the turquoise. What do you suggest I could do to warm it up a bit?
Fantastic video I'm trying to do cabinets in a kitchen can I achieve this look without major major sanding, now I have seen a video where some one just scuff sanded the stained cabinet which was brown, then he put down antique white then he did the dry brush look with a carbon grey and looked like yours it was fantastic more like a driftwood effect but that's what I'm trying to do. also I'm really into the music in the background could you tell me who it is.Thanks!!
I loved this technique! I am not sure about the wood because I have a red oak table top. The colors on the red oak look different than the colors in this video. I have classic gray and jacobean. Do you have any experience with the red oak?
Hi!! I do! so red oak is named that because when its wet in any way it does just that, pulls red. It can be super hard to color match. I would suggest white washing the whole thing first, or you could even bleach it. Sometimes the bleach makes the wood lighter like a pine to pull differently. Do you have any scraps you can play with? I would suggest trying a bunch of different stains on a few sample pieces first to find what you really like. Good luck!
Any chance acrylic paint would work? Gonna scroll through comments to see if already answered, but just in case. Also thanks for showing your technique!
so what i can tell by the video, i do the grey slats(rub it in),then dark color(rub it in) and then the watered down white latex paint (do it like you showed how to do the turqouise) then the poly clear coat?
Your work is absolutely amazing!!! 🤩🤩🤩 Simple and to the point 👍🏻 I have a question tho... would I be able to achieve this look on an old dining table and not on new wood? After stripping it and sanding it down?
Amazing art ! , I'm in love with your talent... 🙌 I will be doing the same to my dining table. I just have a question, how long do you wait to dry in between stains and colors?
Grysell Gutierrez thanks for watching! Great question! I only waited a few seconds between each darker color so I could blend them and then waited a few min to add the white. I usually suggest ppl do a practice run on scrap just to be sure it’s the way you like it. Good luck!
What kind of stain did you use? I see the colors and brands but I’m needing to know if it’s the solid colors or the semi transparent. Apparently these many variations lol. Awesome video. Definitely the easiest way I’ve seen.
Robo Trump wow that sounds like it was a really cool process! I love low gloss or satin the most for my clear coats and I use deft fro Home Depot or polycrylic from Lowes if it’s going on a wall that should be perfect!
I think it would sure, but it would be a bit more busy with the pattern, if that makes sense? Try it out on some small scrap and see how you feel, I bet you can blend it to your liking.
When you applied the classic gray and jaco bean did you use a regular or foam brush? And did you use different brushes for each color or did you just clean them and use the same brush? And with the stains did you water them down or just dip right into can?
Hi. Did you water down the white like you did the teal? Also, did you wipe the white right after like you did the teal? Love your video. Very kind of you to share your craft! Thanks!
Love the look of this! I decided to do my dining room table for my first staining project lol. The first color I was going to do was Carbon Grey but then thought it might be too dark so I also got a can of Classic Grey. Would those 2 colors still work for this type of look? Is an accent color necessary? Thanks for you help :)
I think pretty much any wood color would work with this technique, I would say just be sure to practice and try the colors out first to achieve the look you want. Then put it on the final piece. Love carbon grey, you just need a lighter and darker color and you may want to add some brown tones if you want it mimic wood. The accent color is not necessarily at all just fun to tie in decor if desired
Can this effect be done with paint if you aren't working with wood? I would like to do a melamine table that I have sealed with a primer. Love this look!
I have had a few people tell me they were able to achieve the same look with paint for surfaces like melamine. I would say do some practice runs with paint thinning with water and see what you think! Good luck! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the excellent video tutorial. I am shopping for stain now! Just curious about whether you used water base stain, or the oil based? I'm sure it makes a difference! TIA!
Love your video. I am new to this staining process. I am going to be staining a wood stair case (pine) what do you recommend for a sealer? Or final coat sorry again I am completely new. I am going to practice first: )
I want to do this grey barn wood on a coffee table but what i want is grey and black look to match my fire place stand can you tell me what i would need plz and i also love what you have done 💜
Hi Brandi...I just have a couple of questions. What kind of "sheen" did you use for the paint? (i.e Semi-gloss; Matte;.....etc) For the white, is it a Ultra Bright white or a different one? Also, can you use stain instead of latex paint for the color and white? Example.....Teal stain and White Wash Pickling. Thanks! Frank
Hi thanks for watching it’s most likely satin sheen, that’s what I usually have on hand. I’ve never tried it with color stain, I usually Suggest that people make some sample boards to play around with and learn how to do the look the way that they want it.good luck! 👋🏼
@@EternalHarvestDecor Wow....thank you so much for the quick reply. You see, I'm wanting to do do something awesome for wife as she is dealing with lymphoma cancer. Do you have any scraps you can play with? I would suggest trying a bunch of different stains on a few sample pieces first to find what you really like. Good luck!
Any chance acrylic paint would work? Gonna scroll through comments to see if already answered, but just in case. Also thanks for showing your technique!
Never tried this before! Not sure maybe do a test piece
so what i can tell by the video, i do the grey slats(rub it in),then dark color(rub it in) and then the watered down white latex paint (do it like you showed how to do the turqouise) then the poly clear coat?
Yep you got it
Your work is absolutely amazing!!! 🤩🤩🤩 Simple and to the point 👍🏻 I have a question tho... would I be able to achieve this look on an old dining table and not on new wood? After stripping it and sanding it down?
And also, would chalk paint work instead of latex paint?
So I haven’t tried paint but the stain should work fine if the table is sanded to bare wood 🙌🏼 thanks for watching
Definitely the easiest way I’ve seen.
alliekatt I think this is it, it’s oil and not transparent

alliekatt I’ll go through and add more links to the video tonight!
Robo Trump it’s just latex paint like you would use on your walls mixed with water
Robo Trump wow that sounds like it was a really cool process! I love low gloss or satin the most for my clear coats and I use deft fro Home Depot or polycrylic from Lowes if it’s going on a wall that should be perfect!
Do you water down the white? Or only the turquoise?
Do you think this effect would show using half the brush size for a smaller item? Thinking on a Guitar. Great Vid, Thank you
I think it would sure, but it would be a bit more busy with the pattern, if that makes sense? Try it out on some small scrap and see how you feel, I bet you can blend it to your liking.
When you applied the classic gray and jaco bean did you use a regular or foam brush? And did you use different brushes for each color or did you just clean them and use the same brush? And with the stains did you water them down or just dip right into can?
I used two different brushes and dipped and went I did not water down the stain, I did water down the paint though.
Hi. Did you water down the white like you did the teal? Also, did you wipe the white right after like you did the teal?
Love your video. Very kind of you to share your craft! Thanks!
Yes I did I did water it down and also wiped right after! Thanks for watching
Want to re - do a solid brown door to this finish. How do I achieve it? Thanks.
Question .. is the white a paint or stain
Nice job. I’m looking for a darker example
Will this work on laminate?
You are amazing! You need to do more videos. Your so helpful.
Susan Bates thanks so much! 😉🙌🏼
Great technique - thanks for sharing.
Is this a water based stain?
Impressive work. Well done.
Can I use water base wood stain?
Can this effect be done with paint if you aren't working with wood? I would like to do a melamine table that I have sealed with a primer. Love this look!
I have had a few people tell me they were able to achieve the same look with paint for surfaces like melamine. I would say do some practice runs with paint thinning with water and see what you think! Good luck! Thanks for watching.
@@EternalHarvestDecor Thanks for your input! I'll give a try.
can you do barn wood style with black compressed wood?
Are you only doing one coat of the stain?
Yes just one coat of each color
Amazing, Awesome process.
CANADIAN BOYS thanks so much ! I appreciate ya watching! 🙌🏼
Thanks for the excellent video tutorial. I am shopping for stain now! Just curious about whether you used water base stain, or the oil based? I'm sure it makes a difference! TIA!
I used oil based but it really didn’t matter
Thank you!@@EternalHarvestDecor
Im about to do my 2 side tables.i stripped them.they are cherry wood and wont go fully to the bare bare wood.will ur technique still work on them?
Did you say that you put a finish product on top of this technique? Totally love your video
Yep I put a clear poly over the top
And thank you!!!
Love your video. I am new to this staining process. I am going to be staining a wood stair case (pine) what do you recommend for a sealer? Or final coat sorry again I am completely new. I am going to practice first: )
Practice will totally help. I would recommend a wood floor sealer or deft clear water base like this amzn.to/2SKHxK1
Good luck! Sounds like a great project
Can you use a sealant on top?
Yes! You totally should, I love polycrylic
I want to do this grey barn wood on a coffee table but what i want is grey and black look to match my fire place stand can you tell me what i would need plz and i also love what you have done 💜
oh thats a hard one! I would suggest finding a few samples of stain you think match and make a few sample boards to see what matches best. Good luck!
And as far as the white....is it an Ultra Pure White or Ultra Bright White or another one? Again, I really do appreciate your help and time. Please stay safe.:)
VP ORD hi no prob, give your wife my best I would go with the pure white as the wood is supposed to look a bit weathered. But anything would work, it all depends on the look you want.
Can you apply black stain after first stain is dry?
Wow! Great job. Looks amazing. This will be what I do to my next piece. Thanks!
Thank you! Hope you like the technique when you try it!
, I love it, great job I enjoy your work
Thank you Julie!
great effort and amazingly done. thank you for sharing
Do you have to add clear to it?
I do! I like polycrylic from minwax and deft
Beautiful!
Thank you!
