This helped me a lot, thank you for taking the time to explain this
Wow! The best I have seen for making wood look like barn wood/Drift wood. Great job and thanks for sharing.
This is great. I will be using these steps- virtually-in photoshop to achieve same effect in the digital domain, it will surely work!
Looks great. Gonna try it today
Informative on bringing out the darker colors around the knots. Thanx for the time and effort. You taught me a couple new tricks!
You're welcome. It takes a little finessing, but looks pretty cool!
good job!
Well done. Thanks
Great video. Very informative. Thanks for posting.
Thanks. You're welcome!
Good info. Thanks for sharing, Happy Holidays to you and your family,😊😊👍
Nice job!
I love the darker board perfect! !
thanks!
I really appreciate your videos. Thank you.
thanks!
Great vid! I'd be curious to see you do the black - grey wash and instead of white, maybe a dark cherry red stain / wash. Also, what would you topcoat it with that prevents the color ruining and also won't yellow? Hope you take up the challenge! tnx so much!
Hi, I love your tutorials, they are very clear. I cannot find the one in which you show how to do different colors for staining. Would you be so kind to tell me where is it? Thanks in advance and thanks again for sharing.
MrDiyDork, what acrylic latex are you using in this video regarding the sheen level? Was it a flat, satin, semi-gloss latex? Also, in this specific example you are showing, which brand and exact color of grey paint did you use in combination with water dilution?
Thank you!
thanks just what I had in mind for one of my projects..
You're welcome! Glad to give you some ideas!
great explanation very inspiring...cheers
Thanks! Try it out on a few scraps boards to get the hang of it and then go crazy with it.
what kind of paint acrylic?
Great! Would you protect the color wash with poly or just leave it raw. Im just creating an accent post and will mix my own color "stain" but I want it to look weathered so Idk if I should poly it or leave it alone
Do you know what kind of paint comes in the new Giani wood paint kit? I really don’t want to buy the kit. Thanks so much!
Do you have a look similar to this but with maybe a light brown on top to do on wood flooring? I can’t find a tutorial anywhere for a look like that and I don’t want to mess it up.
Amo essa cor de madeira! 😊
is it possible to order a few wooden planks from you to be delivered to New York ? Same one you did in this video, the one on the left dark grey.
Great video. Thanks. Can this do done on builder grade hollow closet doors to make them look like old barn wood???
DYI Dork, I just discovered you yesterday and I think you're awesome! You clearly love what you do and I much appreciate you sharing your tricks with us.
I tried this out on quite a boring plain new a sheet of plywood I've used to make the base of my murphy bed, so when folded this is a key focal point for the room. I got into a bit of a trance looking for any kind of inspiration from the wood grain (no knots, just lines) and got a bit carried away. It now looks like an eerie dark magical tree trunk with loads of painted on texture but I didn't thing to use your wire brush texture trick first so it's still actually phisicallt flat. Any advice for maybe denting the texture onto the wood rather than ripping up hours of inspired wood staining with a wire brush?
very nice what type of the paint are those need to paint my barn door grey like that thx
What really makes it work is that the wood on the left is distressed (the grain is open)
that would have happened when it freezes and exposed to moisture, plywood is like that
The gray color wash, what's the title of the video that tells us how to do that?
It's my DIY Colored Stain video. There should be a link to it in the description of this video.
Hi Kevin. I bought pine planks for shelves and I used the wire brush with my drill. I did one shelf already, but the brush kind of ripped up a lot of the soft grains, so it is kind of hairy now. I tried to sand it a bit, but that only removes the top ones, not the ones in the grooves. Do you have any tip on how to remove it or the problem is that I am using soft wood?
I wonder if you could try rubbing them down with steel wool, so it could get down in the grooves?
It is beautiful and easy, but I think I will add some brown into it, and maybe even some reds or blues, too, for it to look a little more realistic.
Great video,
Im wanting to do this to a table that is already lacquered, should I strip the lacquer off first before using this technique?? and then after could I lacquer it to make it smooth again??
Yes you should strip it completely. Then you can distress and paint/stain whatever you want to do to get the effect you like. I would put a matte finish poly on it to make it easy to clean.
HOW DO YOU MAKE NEW CCA TREATED WOOD LOOK OLD AND WEATHERED?
Would you seal the boards before using them?
It would depend on how I was going to use it. If it's just for a shelf, etc, I'd probably just leave it alone. But if it was a table top or something like that which might see liquids, I'd seal it. Also, keep in mind that it'll probably deepen the color a bit when you seal it.
Is it possible to use a gray stain as the first step?
Sure, I think that would work great too.
Is there any type of sealant or top coat to apply for the paint to set after distressing? I'm asking because I assume the artificial texturing would make it easier for the paint to dust off over time, rub away and undo all that effort that went into mocking up the wood
Sure, just about anything works on top of this like polyurethane, lacquer, shellac, furniture wax, spray paint enamel clear, etc.
mega vega Use Waverly clear wax
Hey man, I've loved your work! Beautiful! Questions: the grey and the black are water colors? Cheers from Chile!
I made a gray stain (color wash) by thinning acrylic latex paint with water (I have a video that shows how easy it is to make). For the black, I just used black acrylic latex paint (not thinned) although you probably could thin it if you want.
I have checked your other videos and now I'm ready to get that type of water pressure machine to make weathered barn wood. Thank you!
Hi! I came across your channel today and I'm just loving your work!
Do u have any or tricks for painting particle board.?
Thanks! Particle board is kind of tough to paint. It tends to soak up most of the paint, and the texture really shows through. I'd try sanding it smooth as you can, seal it with a few heavy-ish layers of oil based primer with sanding in between, and then a few coats of paint. If you need it really smooth, sand the raw particle board, then wipe a thin layer of wood filler or bondo over the whole surface to fill in the texture, sand it smooth, and then do the primer and paint.
easiest thing to do is buy cheap pressure treated pine privacy fence planks and let them sit outside a month or so since you're not supposed to paint/stain PT wood until it's had time in the weather. Then just stain them whatever color you want, distressing may not be needed since the face of the planks is rough to start with. You can rip them down to whatever width you need with a table saw. Only 10 square feet of "weathered planks" cost 28 bucks at Home Depot when you can make a lot more of them for much cheaper
I'm unable to find you video on making the gray stain.
It's my homemade colored wood stain video ( ruclips.net/video/ui1I368Fa1Y/видео.html ). In that video, I made some bright, bold colors, but it works just as well for grays, browns, blacks, & whites too.

Pretty interesting to see as I am in the Barn Wood industry. Specifically the procurement side. You guys do a good job of emulating it! This is quite the process, as reclaiming it is as well. Checkout my latest Barn Wood Video to see what I am talking about! ; )
I know that this is an old video and it's hard to go back and recall for each person's comment, but take a closer look at the piece of wood on the right. It looks like the image of a woman with both arms hanging down and a ball gown with a bustle from *Star Trek The Next Generation* (not a beauty but does match up well with the show) Awesome, you should sale it. Good tricks, thanks.
You're not much of a dork. You're adorbs! (But if you really are a true dork, you'll have to look up what that means!)
Hi! I just wanted to say that I have a gap in my front teeth too and seeing yours made me smile! 😂🤗
Am I the only one who can see the image of the Virgin Mary on the right board at 6:30?
I made it with stodoys handbooks !
Steel wool in vinegar, let it rust. Paint rusty water on board no artistic skills needed. Instantly ages the board
i though it looked just right after the first grey wash.
How long of a process does that take?
It would depend on how big your piece is. I would say it probably took about 10-15 minutes to do a few sample boards like this.
Anyone else seeing a couple of tree spirits here?
so on a larger scale.... this would take a weekend to just get them washed and colored right.
probably so depending on how big your project is
This can be done so much easier with tea and an oxidizing mixture.
Dude imagine doing my house 2000 sq ft. Lol time is more valuable than money. I’ll just fork out the cash and buy it pre made
Buying isn't DIY, which is the title of the video.
Okay I found your video so basically it's gray paint and water
Yes, you make a wash from thinned down paint. Works great!
Talk Too much....action please
Reupload or deja vu?
I think it's a remake of the one that was removed. Maybe kevin can clarify.
A reshoot of the one I did a couple of days ago. I was having some technical issues with the upload, so I just redid the whole thing.
I hope people don't use this to fool customers and pass it off as real barn wood.
Shelly Mcgough this is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
I was looking to do this but this video is soo boring and too sooo long to get anywhere that I switched off.
I like to be thorough, so that you don't have to watch a bazillion videos to figure out how to do something. Thanks for checking it out though.
John P have you tested yourself for ADD? Or ADHD? I don't know you or what you're like, but it seems as though you shouldn't have too tough a time watching a 10-minute video to the end. You do know there are people who devote weeks upon weeks of reading through the dryest prose and writing to glean crystal clear comprehension of the subject, not because it entertains them, but it informs them on topics they deem worth their time & effort to read, like learning how to fix a person using surgery or how to prevent someone from going to jail? There are people who read the crusty dusty old journals and diaries of people they will never meet, who connect the dots across time and history to better understand a world before Greek people ever met Irish people, or to empathise with people who had no AC, no TV, no pre-packaged meals & snacks, and no cars to take them very far places. People choose to pay attention to things like that which would undoubtedly take longer than 10 minutes to know, and require much more mental effort to comprehend than watching a glass screen for as long as it takes to take a quick bathroom break.
That's not even the best part though, because there are some people who devote their time, however much that is, to solving complex calculations the likes of which the greatest algebraic minds have lived and died having never solved them. Math. For fun.
So I mean, it's just something to keep in mind, the next chance you get to ask someone like a doctor or behavioral specialist whether you have a problem keeping focus.
mega vega BRAVO!!! Well stated! This society we find ourselves in that think everything worth having is supposed to be born forth in 6 min or less........I am beginning to seriously wonder about. THANK YOU for taking the time to put together a thorough video for those of us serious about learning!
Geez, how rude!!!! This guy offers his wisdom and experience for your benefit and this is how you respond. Check yourself rude dude.
John P haha the video was too long and boring to watch and yet you took the time to comment??
I think we need to stop writing to John P as he clearly won't take the time to read it!!
This is bullshit. Imagine if you try to do this on a large project!
To much blah blah blah, slow down dude.
