To anyone complaining about the music: You can just turn down your volume to 0... Instructions are pretty clear from the video alone. You can take what you need, thank and leave. I believe that would be simpler for you and more respectful to whoever took their time to make this video. Cheers.
Great idea. I'm new to this technique. I've been watching videos about it. The last video that I watched said to use a dark spray paint for the base coat. then use my topcoat. After that sand. I like the idea of using stain because it lowers the risk of over sanding to practically none. Thanks.
I agree! What I like to do now since posting this video is using a combo of the dark stain and white distressed look. You can see the pictures here: johndolechek.myportfolio.com/barn-door-entertainment-stand
Very good video and very easy technique. Does one use something else on top to seal the paint - so that it is protected from Cup stains etc ? Like a lacquer polish or something. I have never painted a wood in my life, so pls excuse my ignorance
Awesome, thank you so much!! I am starting my 1st distressing piece today!! It is a dresser. Any tips advice and/or recommendations, please feel free. I gladly accept all feedback!! Wish me luck :-)
I wouldn’t recommend enamel paint since it dries much harder than other paints, but let me know if you tried it and how it worked for you! Thanks for watching!
Hi! Since you have a dark table, yes, the first step is already complete for you! But if it has a smooth protective finish on it, you may want to lightly sand it to ensure your paint will apply properly. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnDolechek That answers my question. Appreciate it & thanks for providing this video. Ive been wanting to learn how to distress furniture in a long time and this technique seems easy and doable. THANK YOU!
I love your video, looks very easy (cross fingers). Question: I already painted my cabinets with a oil-based primer before I founded this video, can I still use this technique? After the wood stain, the paint that I have to use have to be water-based or oil? Please help me!
If you don’t apply anything before the paint, then when you sand the white paint off you’ll see only the natural wood color underneath. I use the dark stain beforehand so there’s a contrast between the white paint and dark stain. Thanks for watching!
Do you mean brush stroke lines? I wouldn’t recommend this generally for painting but for this application you can brush in two different directions (like a cross hatch) to help mask stroke lines. Thanks for watching!!
I guess I put to much stain cause it’s been over 24 hrs and there is still some spots that are wet/sticky. I wiped it down with a cloth but some of the sticky spots are still there. Can I still paint over it. Will the white paint stick to it?
@@JohnDolechek thanks. By the way u said not to have brush lines when painting but u didn’t say how to avoid it. Also what’s the name of that song. It’s 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi John, I have 2 different pieces in 2 different exisiting stains, that I would like to paint white and was thinking of painting both with a black chalk undercoat so that the distress colour is the same. Do you think that would work? Thank you :)
Sometimes it helps to brush in multiple directions to avoid brush strokes. Also, make sure you’re putting enough paint on your brush. Thanks for watching!
Paint won’t yellow over time since it’s applied on top of the wood. This typically only happens to unfinished woods, especially pine. Thanks for watching!
I realize this is a pretty old comment section, but I figured I would put my two cents in. It won’t yellow, but it will somewhat brown. There is no sealer coat over it all so by sanding paint down you break that hardened seal that has dried on-top and that expose pores that will grab dirt and oils. I recommend sealing it with some kind of topcoat.
Hey all! I created a similar video that similarly explains this distressing process: ruclips.net/video/DIvL-Teo6B8/видео.html

Fausto Coloma I know right???
Fausto Coloma woah thanks!!
Maybe you could do one about painting ?🤷♀️
That’s a good idea! I need to think of what to paint
John Dolechek Christmas paintings are in by this time.
Looks incredible. My very first time. Your video moves very quick, which is great. Wish me luck. Thanks..😊

Yes, I think staining provides a more solid base for you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for that simple presentation! Sometimes I think we (I) overthink the process!
☺️
Glad you found it simple and helpful! Thanks for watching!
Very nice, John!

Love how simple and straight forward your videos are mate! Easy to learn not to much detail that we don't need!!

Great job!! This will be my first project...going to do two boxes for the holidays...thanks for sharing!
Omg this is amazing!! Love this video!!
thanks QT!!
Thankyou for this looks pretty simple
It really is! Thanks for watching!
Wow - looks great - only two tins of inexpensive stuff - better than all the hi-faluttin' chalk paints and expensive waxes
Thanks for watching!!
Nice tips and most importantly amazing finish 😍
Love it...
I do something very similar to create that distressed look!! I like the stain idea!! Looks good! Subscribed!!
Love this. So easy. Thank you!! :)
If the wood is old and has already been stained/sealed, can I paint on it with white latex without sanding first?

Do you sell plans for the end tables and coffee table? Wanting to build them
Like the look and technique. Now where do you get the plans for the table?
Hey
Love the video
I'm planning to make my piece into a desk
Any recommendations for a desk top coat?
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, I recommend using 2-3 coats of polyurethane finish to completely protect the top.
@@JohnDolechek thank you very much
Will update when I get it done

If we’re trying to distress a piece of furniture that’s already stained and glazed, would we sand all that off before staining?
So pretty. Shabby chic vibe
Thanks for watching!
Hi nice video! Will enamel paint work for this too?
I wouldn’t recommend enamel paint since it dries much harder than other paints, but let me know if you tried it and how it worked for you! Thanks for watching!
Amazing!! Thank you!!
Awesome video. Is it possible to spray the stain and paint instead of brushing?
You may spray on the stain but I would recommend hand brushing on the paint for this technique. Thanks for watching!
Im from 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭 Philippines I like your video Sir Hope you notice me
Thank you so much!
Very educational John, tks. I liked watching your video a lot, I almost shut it off a couple of times because your music is way too loud.
I’ve improved on the music since posting this 😅
There is no need for stain conditioning or wax at the end?
Since it’s a “rustic” piece there’s no need in my opinion, thanks for watching!!
Hey John, if I have a dark wood table, will I still need to apply the wood stain?
Hi! Since you have a dark table, yes, the first step is already complete for you! But if it has a smooth protective finish on it, you may want to lightly sand it to ensure your paint will apply properly. Thanks for watching!

The link takes me to a semi gloss white paint - just curious, would matte finish work?
Thanks for the video- super helpful.
Hi Nida, yes, any finish of paint should work!
Thanks for watching!
You not put lacquer as finish coat ??
Would using white chalk paint work for this project?
Using white chalk paint is very popular but it looks less authentic in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
I love your video, looks very easy (cross fingers). Question: I already painted my cabinets with a oil-based primer before I founded this video, can I still use this technique? After the wood stain, the paint that I have to use have to be water-based or oil? Please help me!
Hi, thank you for watching! Water-based or oil should work. You may have to do extra sanding if you already have a primer on.
Very nice….thanks
Thanks for watching!
You didn’t added any wax at the end ?
Looks great. Did you do the top coat?
I typically recommend a top coat but I did not use one for these since the majority of the top coat is paint.
Thanks for watching!
Is there any other way to get that look? I like the way he did. However, I didn't apply anything before I did the white paint.
If you don’t apply anything before the paint, then when you sand the white paint off you’ll see only the natural wood color underneath. I use the dark stain beforehand so there’s a contrast between the white paint and dark stain. Thanks for watching!
What do you do if you painted with white chalk two coats and now all of a sudden I see lines everywhere

I guess I put to much stain cause it’s been over 24 hrs and there is still some spots that are wet/sticky. I wiped it down with a cloth but some of the sticky spots are still there. Can I still paint over it. Will the white paint stick to it?
When it’s still sticky, yes you probably applied too much, but it should still be fine to paint over it. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnDolechek thanks. By the way u said not to have brush lines when painting but u didn’t say how to avoid it. Also what’s the name of that song. It’s 👍🏻👍🏻

I want to do my countertops like this....what kind of finish do I need? polycyclic? polyurethane? oil based, water based?
Hi Jackie, a polyurethane (oil based) finish would be more durable for countertops. Thanks for watching!!
What about a barnwood doors?
Hi John, I have 2 different pieces in 2 different exisiting stains, that I would like to paint white and was thinking of painting both with a black chalk undercoat so that the distress colour is the same. Do you think that would work? Thank you :)
Hi, yes I think that will work! For this process any base coat should work fine. Thanks for watching!
John, what's your technique to avoid brush strokes while painting?
Sometimes it helps to brush in multiple directions to avoid brush strokes. Also, make sure you’re putting enough paint on your brush. Thanks for watching!
simplest video that does it right
Thank you!!
I want to use water based white paint over dark wood stain. Is it possible?
Yes, that should be no issue for you!
Any one know if the white will yellow over time? (from the pine wood)
Paint won’t yellow over time since it’s applied on top of the wood. This typically only happens to unfinished woods, especially pine. Thanks for watching!
I realize this is a pretty old comment section, but I figured I would put my two cents in. It won’t yellow, but it will somewhat brown. I recommend sealing it with some kind of topcoat.
Very nice work, although your music is so loud and your voice was so low. Kept having to turn it up and down.
Thanks for the feedback Kim!
Great video! This technique made me 60 dollars😅

Sealer needed???
Hi, sealer isn’t necessary, however I’d recommend it if it’s being used for an everyday dining table. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnDolechek will Polyurethane change the color over time?
You didn't seal it or use wax? Wow!
No sealant-contributes to the rustic vibes!
