You say that, but the fact is even the singing shows are regularly using autotune and pitch correction. A real voice doesn’t sound pristine all the time, and on some nights it does things even the artist isn’t expecting. Two two truly live performances are identical. Though admittedly some bands have gotten pretty close to perfection, everybody has bad nights, bad days, a squeak instead of a squawk sometimes.

Freddie Mercury once said in an interview that if you expect the live performance to match the record just stay home and listen to the album as every show will be different. I think that was his way of letting fans know he won’t be hitting the high notes every night and that the magic is in giving a performance. Reality is he has to protect his voice as that is how he makes a living. If one of the top 5 rock singers of all time can skip the high notes and still sell out stadiums around the world, I think Ken can too. Perhaps Ken just lacks the talent to perform well enough to entertain an audience. IDK
Fil is posting digital files, it's not an opinion, it's factual data. there's no argument that Ken was lip synching. What Ken should do is admit to the obvious, and pledge to do better. Now, does that mean he's a lousy vocal coach? I dunno.
I think Ken is creepy as fuck. Having said that, losing his range doesn't mean he lost the knowledge to teach; he has to come clean and admit this to his followers and hope they understand the difference. ... And never do a "live" performance again. (Thank you, Fil)
Exactly! One can have difficulty reaching certain notes due to age (or physical disability, such as in my case), but can still teach. The problem is in being truthful about it.

Anthony Vincent swore by Ken a few years ago, but I have a feeling that Anthony was already a phenomenal singer, and either got a few decent tips from Ken or else enough praise to raise Anthony's confidence.

But there are a few who have posted their progress in six month intervals for the past 3 years and swear the have greatly improved. They haven't. They just sound more like Ken. There's an update to this from Fil that shows the recording he's miming to is at least from 1990. I think if you are a coach you need to be helping 'tune the instrument' when you are passing off as live a 30 plus years old recording I think is fraudulent
Miming at any level is fraud. Whether it’s a bar band or Don Henley. Backing tracks are slightly less troublesome unless the actual singers on stage are pretending to sing. I’ve used tracks to cover keyboard parts but didn’t (and wouldn’t) have someone pretending to play the parts. We’ve become too accustomed to listening to ultra produced, pitch corrected, and quantized music that we’ve lost the ability to enjoy slightly imperfect, but vastly more musical performances.
Yeah, the tongue thing was always thing for me to. He's literally saying that his way is the only way to sing with your tongue placement as he wants it.

What doesn't make sense is that Ken can genuinely sing. He's not the greatest vocalist ever, but he can sing. So, for him to risk his rep with this is really a bad call.

I know of Ken personally, He was very involved with a personal good friend of mine, Darrell Mansfield, an amazing Gospel singer and best harmonica player in the world. He said to Darrell, " What happened to you? You, used to have a 3 octive range. , Ken's own words are coming back to himself! He also has interfered with mine and my man's life as well, which I won't go into the details. I'm grateful He is being exposed!

Ken uses a super advanced vocal technique that allows him to still sing with mouth closed at the end of phrases. His mouth physically closes and you can still hear the singing, that's a super advanced technique he only teaches in volume 3 of his course
I remember that when I started singing, I was looking for guides on how to sing in a rock style, e.g. how to sing like Jon Bon Jovi, and I found Ken's channel, a 30-minute episode about nothing, then luckily I found your channel. Your video about livin on prayer taught me a lot
Years ago I purchased the Ken Tamplin "method". Yeah, all it did was cause issues and prohibit my growth. I tried for years to get better. Lots of lessons, classes, etc. The two who helped me the most were Melissa Cross and Jim Chandler. And with Rapid Vocal Technique, I grew faster than I ever have and got to the next level. I won't be surprised if Ken's crew reports this video. He can’t take any criticism.

Ken went on full attack mode on Fil’s first video, using multiple accounts, and invoking his god. It’s embarrassing. I got his vocal course back in 2016. It taught me warm-ups, vowel modifications, diaphragmatic support, the usual things you would expect. It actually helped my range and live accuracy a lot. 🤷

And using girls who could already sing metal songs really well and either hiring them or at least recruiting them to be "students" is a bit unethical also. In effect, he's saying "look how you'll sound IF you fork over a crazy fee for my singing course!" It's just a cringey, creepy, unethical affair all around, imo. Tamplin's ego is off the charts, but he doesn't sound good even with the tricks and cheating. A mediocre singer who thinks he's great because he can shout at high volumes....or is that mime at high volumes?
Over the past few years, I've come across a few of his videos on my home page feed, and I find him hard to watch, because he's creepy and weird. He says he is an ordained minister, but for me that is a red flag, because as a lot of us have enough experience to know that preachers are full of shit, and this guy just gives off cult vibes.
You'd be desperate too if you were an aging singer trying to figure out how to make a living doing that stuff. It's rough out there.. Give people a break. Most everyone has to do a bit a fudging here and there in order to make a living. It's the nature of the beast. It sucks, but it is what it is.

I really liked the Zeppelin video you did where you left the mistake in ( I don't know what the technical name is for it maybe voice cracking or something ) because it was so honest. I respected that.
I actually challenged him to kind of a "sing off" if you will. This would give him an opportunity to clear his name once and for all. We're very close to the same age and I sing the same type of material. He's been approached about it several times from different people. Again, this gives him a chance to put all this to bed... he did respond to one friend of mine a couple weeks ago and said "Sounds good. I'll get back to you." he has not responded to anyone about this since.

I spent money on Brett Manning's vocal kit. I think it was $300 plus dollars. Then a video surfaced on RUclips of him completely bombing at a concert. It was a bad performance. He was sick. He came out and owned up to that. He didn't fake it. He didn't lip sync. He didn't mime to a backtrack. He simply had a bad night and then admitted it afterwards. I'm pretty sure Ken Tamplin invented his little catchphrase out of his dislike of Brett Manning. Ken is contributing to his own downfall by having a giant problem with his bloated ego. Everybody understands a bad night. Everybody understands a mistake. Ken going scorched Earth at anybody who will criticize him when he is so clearly lied to us all is about as dumb as it gets. And regardless of the one bad concert by Brett Manning, I learned an infinite amount from his vocal kit
The same question in another form (from a recording engineer of many years experience)...would any audience be happy with you if, at the end of a 'live' concert, you told your them that you were miming? Clearly, they would be severely pissed off at you. This is exactly why it is never, ever stated on any live concert or media advertising that the artists would be miming...when we now know so many do mime. A similar question relates to the near 100% abuse of vocal/instrument tuning/phrasing adjusting tools, then end result being that no artist could ever reproduce, live, the impossible computer-perfected 'performance'... i.e. the listener/purchaser is being sold a lie. This is another reason so much miming is taking place...and rapidly increasing.
He can sing but he's not great and this lip syncing scam is a damn disgrace imho. I'm sure he can help someone starting out learning how to sing but as soon as it comes to mixed voice and more advanced techniques, his approach is bound to fail and even cause health issues. I would like to mention Chris Liepe as a positive example for great teaching, especially mixed voice.

Yes! I did his course and did 6 1-1 lessons w him over the course of 3 years and never got anywhere w my voice. This news is kinda vindicating. I've applied Ken's techniques before and they always ending up tiring my voice out and using compensatory techniques to "hit" the notes, feels incredibly forced and unnatural. Also his whole brand and vibe has always been really offputting and hamfisted. The fact that he has been a fraud this whole time comes as very little surprise.
I used to sub to his channel. I don't think I do any more. He always struck me as odd. Ken seems to be Ken's biggest fan, and he has always seemed rather full of himself. He also seems a bit big on the clickbait, with pretty girls singing metal songs. Not much with average guys and gals.

Robert Plant is in his 70s and doesn't mime. Robert can adjust alter the melody or lower the key if something is too high. Micky Dolenz of the Monkees is 79 and doesn't mime. Eric Clapton is 79 and doesn't mime.

The advent of modern technology has led to its prevalent abuse. All singers signed to a record label these days are expected and will use autotune or pitch correction even when they release their live DVD concerts. Cheryl Porter a very successful vocal coach on RUclips pitch corrects her scale vocal exercises. Ken Tamplin is just one amongst many who make himself sound better than he actually does. It's part of the current culture. I subtlely edit my covers although never using pitch correction softwares.
In most videos I can tell for sure he is miming. Havent watched him for years, because he doesnt really know what he is doing. But he is great at marketing ;)
I thought that was the point of taking his courses is to strengthen your voice and to sing everyday hitting the high notes and not damaging and straining the voice and being able to sing on key live?!?! As far as I am concerned, if somebody is suggesting that they''re performing "live", whether playing guitar or singing, then they should be performing "live" and not miming (I refuse to call it "lip syncing" as that, sort of, lends the practice some legitimacy); Ken is using videos like that to "advertise" his vocal academy but it's not live and is, therefore, fraudulent.
What really makes me question things is.. I've only seen 2 or 3 males that he has even REMOTELY promoted, and 1 of them was a really young kid... it's always HYPER-ATTRACTIVE women..OK, well, most women just have NATURALLY HIGHER REGISTERS for singing. Then, if you add in his constant picking apart some of the greatest singers of all times, like with Joe Elliott, Ken was truly just making fun of him and patting himself on the back 30 times a video and singing over what he's critiquing... he seems VERY ARROGANT and self aggrandizing...i just watched an interview with the AMAZING Rik Emmitt, and he was SO FREAKING HUMBLE❤...I am a singer/musician in a, purely, local-yocal band.. As I've gotten older, I've lost my upper range.. IT JUST HAPPENS!... but the faking it garbage is really disingenuous!

There's a video of Tamplin's i recently watched with about 10 or so singing examples of him singing into a mic in a studio. i thought his mouth didn't really line up to what i heard, but i dismissed it as ignorance on my part. i should have trusted my instinct.
i should have added, to the point in question, fraud is fraud. He's claiming one thing and doing something else. That's not ok. i don't like when the big pop stars lip-synch part of what's SOLD as live vocals, either. We spend way too much on tickets to be lied-to.

When performing live imperfections/changes makes that particular show unique and intimate for the fans. I've been to shows where the artist didn't start a song correctly, apologiezed and laughed along with the audience about it and the crowd went wild in the second go around. Things like that shows you that the artist cares AND makes more of a connection with the fans.
@@pungus8498 those who can't do teach. Melissa Cross was the best vocal coach for "screamers" as they call them back in the day, and she was classically trained. Couldn't do harsh vocals to save her life. But she saved a ton of careers
He is 100% miming and lip syncing. Ive noticed hes been doing it for years in his videos. But, when he started, back in the costa mesa studio days, in hild older version of the course he didnt lip sung on the videos. Here is his cover of the pretender. I had a lesson with him recently this year in person and he is the real deal. I have had lessons with him virtually too and he also destroys in those lessons too. IDK why he is lip singing. I will also add that he does come off as a bit of a narissist, and has a ego at times. Its giving boomer energy. His marketting has also gotten very click baity and kinda scammy, like 90/2000s infomercials.
That is so lame. Ken just undermined any credibility he may have had. Age happens, voices change. A legit coach would know this, own up and I would think would teach how to adjust for those natural physiological changes.
Personally I think it 100% stinks on so many levels. We have grown to accept so much lip-syncing / miming and yes certain backing effects etc and orchestral parts etc are to some degree acceptable but a claimed 'live' vocal by a SINGING COACH who makes money on the basis that his vocal program must be demonstratable by himself, then fakes it, is outrageous! I've been performing most of my life and if you watch Ken's performances it's clear even before Fil's technical analysis, that he's miming. The out of sink mouth movements with some of the vocal line ends, the over expression facially, and then obivous moments when we hear a perfect vocal whilst his mouth is closed. As I say, this guy is selling a vocal teaching programme on the explicit basis that he must be able to deliver live too. He must either come clean and apologise and rebuild, or step away. It's a terrible example for upcoming generations of aspiring singers and musicians and he should have the integrity to realise that.
The intro to this video is EVERYTHING 🤣 That being said, I think it's a total scam to sell tickets for a live show and offer your audience the same audio they would have heard if they listened to the record. But nothing surprises me anymore... people no longer want to work hard to get to a certain level, they'd rather lie and pretend to be something they're not, cause they have no love for what they do, they just like the attention.

This whole situation is just disappointing to me because there was actually a time where I pretty much got all my information about vocals exclusively from Ken. Because he seem to be authentic and he seem to know what he was talking about. One of the wake up Coast for me with a lifestream when he played one of his old songs and he was clearly lip-synching and pretending to play guitar, and I just felt really insulting because he clearly knows how to do both those things so why didn’t he just do it? And his voice in his videos whenever he does cover his is just so processed and he pretty much lip-synchs all of them that it’s really hard to learn from them.
I've watched Kens videos off and on , but I can't stand his tongue. It drives me crazy and not in a good way lol. After watching Fils video it's so obvious that Ken is miming.
Your opinion is the correct one. I absolutely despise that it is becoming "industry standard" to mime/lip sync.. Some of these bloody vocal coaches will even teach it as acceptable in order to "protect your voice" - fuck that!!Rock and roll is meant to be authentic and fiercely individualistic. I'd much rather a band flat out cancel the show or perform without the singer than see the singer mime. Eq, compress- go nuts. Even using autotune as an artistic effect (to deliberately sound like a robot maybe?) That can be cool. Where pitch correction crosses the line is when it is done to make things "industry standard." I could TOTALLY hear the difference between when Ken was actually singing and when he was miming to a produced vocal track which either had a bit of reverb or delay (and probably compression as well). It was like night and day!
Hope you are well Jim. I have no problem with people miming to music video's when promoting new songs as everyone knows its not a live performance but miming as a vocal coach to a track is pretty bad. How to mime better than anyone else, where the proof is in the mime.
I am doing his free excercise for 4 weeks every day :chest warming up 17 minutes. I slow down to 25 % and build this up to regular speed; 60 minutes practise. It works! I hit some tones better. But i have to practice at least one year to make some progress. And I payed nothing yet. 😀

Of course he's miming. It's not a matter of opinion, but a proven fact, as Phil showed using the real data as evidence. Does it matter? well, THAT is a matter of opinion. I don't care enough to have an opinion on this guy, who I've never heard of. Phil's 'Wings of Pegasus' channel does a lot of analysis of various singers, past and present. Many of them are very positive - mostly singers from the past who didn't have the tech to cheat. Many current-day singers can be proven to be using cheat-software. Why is this controversial? It's hard data being used in a legitimate way. If a singer's feelings are hurt, then they should try being more honest about what they're doing, not complain about being exposed.
I remember my high school band had a show at a local dance and I hadn’t had time to learn one of the songs we played and I was to turn my volume down and just fake it and it killed a small part of me.
KT is miming and it was right to call him out, a good singer will work out how to sing a song, even Dio dropped the key on some songs as he got older, he did not mime or use technology, he simply changed key, if KT had done that I might have had some respect for him, but his attitude sucks, he is arrogant and a fraud
what really gets me is that he literally mimed LIVE as early as I think someone said 1989 or at least 90s. KT born in 63. So by 1993, he's 30. Why is he miming live at age 30? Is it maybe his vocal technique didn't serve him well? He knew he couldn't sing an entire live set with the same power and grit so he just mimed to the album cuts? Then doesn't that make his entire course a lie? I mean, he literally says " sing better than anyone else" and "the proof is in the singing". Then to help SELL his course, he sings "live" on his YT channel but most of those are mimed as well. So, it's just bad. If he was 71 and just started to mime from age, I MIGHT could see that but he's pretending to be a vocal coach and selling a course and STILL miming after all these decades. Just something very unethical about it all.

In the description he tries to make it seem as if performance shown in the video were real, when, in reality, he is actually miming to a studio recording.

I'd say you're better off asking WoP because I'm not really technical that way... I sing live dry because I don't like to 'hide' behind effects (plus if you make a mistake, the reverb or delay only repeats and exacerbates the mistake! yikes!)

Thanks for your video! I really hope there's gonna be a big lawsuit about this. He stole money from many and potentially damaged their voices. He surely did for me some time ago and made me even feel like this failure (yeah that makes it so much easier to sing) and generally his way of teaching is extremely uninspiring in any way. Ken's fans will say "everybody does it" as if that justifies it. Everybody in rock doesn't do it. There's an expectation in rock music (and certainly for vocal teachers) to sing live and when people like Paul Stanley and Don Henley mime, people are disappointed. There's an expectation that pop singers will mime at least some of the concert because of the dances etc. Dua Lipa's response as to whether she mimes would be interesting. But Ken has an opportunity to admit that he mimes, because WoP has proved it (as you have). But he hasn't. He's choosing to be deceitful. He actually can sing, but chooses perfection over integrity. Also, if you Jim, are a vocal teacher with any merit (I don't know you), your opinion should matter and you're weakening your points by suggesting they don't.✌
I would rather see someone sing live with the odd mistake than someone miming. It is raw and real. Can't beat it.
You say that, but the fact is even the singing shows are regularly using autotune and pitch correction. A real voice doesn’t sound pristine all the time, and on some nights it does things even the artist isn’t expecting. Two two truly live performances are identical. Though admittedly some bands have gotten pretty close to perfection, everybody has bad nights, bad days, a squeak instead of a squawk sometimes.

Freddie Mercury once said in an interview that if you expect the live performance to match the record just stay home and listen to the album as every show will be different. I think that was his way of letting fans know he won’t be hitting the high notes every night and that the magic is in giving a performance. Reality is he has to protect his voice as that is how he makes a living.
If one of the top 5 rock singers of all time can skip the high notes and still sell out stadiums around the world, I think Ken can too. Perhaps Ken just lacks the talent to perform well enough to entertain an audience. IDK

Exactly! One can have difficulty reaching certain notes due to age (or physical disability, such as in my case), but can still teach. The problem is in being truthful about it.

But there are a few who have posted their progress in six month intervals for the past 3 years and swear the have greatly improved. They haven't. They just sound more like Ken. The last one I watched (his third year post) actually had Ken's fucking smarmy GRIN on his face while singing.

There's an update to this from Fil that shows the recording he's miming to is at least from 1990. I think if you are a coach you need to be helping 'tune the instrument' when you are passing off as live a 30 plus years old recording I think is fraudulent

Ken Tamplin needs to be taken down and legally sued. His actions as a tutor are in fact against common law and decency.
Miming at any level is fraud. Whether it’s a bar band or Don Henley. Backing tracks are slightly less troublesome unless the actual singers on stage are pretending to sing. I’ve used tracks to cover keyboard parts but didn’t (and wouldn’t) have someone pretending to play the parts. We’ve become too accustomed to listening to ultra produced, pitch corrected, and quantized music that we’ve lost the ability to enjoy slightly imperfect, but vastly more musical performances.

@@martinmccann8975, actually he's sixty, he won't turn sixty one until December. A quick search yielded that bit of information. But I can tell you that some of the vocal gymnastics I could do fifty years ago, I definitely cant now, at sixty six as someone that can do voice characterizations.

He also has interfered with mine and my man's life as well, which I won't go into the details. I'm grateful He is being exposed!

Ken uses a super advanced vocal technique that allows him to still sing with mouth closed at the end of phrases. His mouth physically closes and you can still hear the singing, that's a super advanced technique he only teaches in volume 3 of his course

I remember that when I started singing, I was looking for guides on how to sing in a rock style, e.g. how to sing like Jon Bon Jovi, and I found Ken's channel, a 30-minute episode about nothing, then luckily I found your channel. Your video about livin on prayer taught me a lot
Years ago I purchased the Ken Tamplin "method". Yeah, all it did was cause issues and prohibit my growth. I tried for years to get better. Lots of lessons, classes, etc. The two who helped me the most were Melissa Cross and Jim Chandler. And with Rapid Vocal Technique, I grew faster than I ever have and got to the next level. I won't be surprised if Ken's crew reports this video. He can’t take any criticism.

Ken went on full attack mode on Fil’s first video, using multiple accounts, and invoking his god. It’s embarrassing. I don’t think that someone who seems as haughty as Ken seems is capable of an apology.

I got his vocal course back in 2016. It taught me warm-ups, vowel modifications, diaphragmatic support, the usual things you would expect. It actually helped my range and live accuracy a lot. 🤷

Over the past few years, I've come across a few of his videos on my home page feed, and I find him hard to watch, because he's creepy and weird. He says he is an ordained minister, but for me that is a red flag, because as a lot of us have enough experience to know that preachers are full of shit, and this guy just gives off cult vibes.

I actually challenged him to kind of a "sing off" if you will. This would give him an opportunity to clear his name once and for all. We're very close to the same age and I sing the same type of material. He's been approached about it several times from different people. Again, this gives him a chance to put all this to bed... he did respond to one friend of mine a couple weeks ago and said "Sounds good. I'll get back to you." he has not responded to anyone about this since.

I spent money on Brett Manning's vocal kit. I think it was $300 plus dollars.
Then a video surfaced on RUclips of him completely bombing at a concert.
It was a bad performance. He was sick. He came out and owned up to that.
He didn't fake it. He didn't lip sync. He didn't mime to a backtrack. He simply had a bad night and then admitted it afterwards.

The same question in another form (from a recording engineer of many years experience)...would any audience be happy with you if, at the end of a 'live' concert, you told your them that you were miming? Clearly, they would be severely pissed off at you. This is exactly why it is never, ever stated on any live concert or media advertising that the artists would be miming...when we now know so many do mime.
A similar question relates to the near 100% abuse of vocal/instrument tuning/phrasing adjusting tools, then end result being that no artist could ever reproduce, live, the impossible computer-perfected 'performance'... i.e. the listener/purchaser is being sold a lie. This is another reason so much miming is taking place...and rapidly increasing.
He can sing but he's not great and this lip syncing scam is a damn disgrace imho. I'm sure he can help someone starting out learning how to sing but as soon as it comes to mixed voice and more advanced techniques, his approach is bound to fail and even cause health issues. I would like to mention Chris Liepe as a positive example for great teaching, especially mixed voice.

This news is kinda vindicating. I've applied Ken's techniques before and they always ending up tiring my voice out and using compensatory techniques to "hit" the notes, feels incredibly forced and unnatural. Also his whole brand and vibe has always been really offputting and hamfisted. The fact that he has been a fraud this whole time comes as very little surprise.
I used to sub to his channel. I don't think I do any more. He always struck me as odd. Ken seems to be Ken's biggest fan, and he has always seemed rather full of himself. He also seems a bit big on the clickbait, with pretty girls singing metal songs. Not much with average guys and gals.
and his tongue thing is hurtful. he wants people to remove the tongue it use of overtones and helping color, to do his lizard tongue. he says its relaxed. thing is more tense than my pants when my goth crush walks by.
Ive made huge amount of progress myself. by playing around with styles throat singing and sub harmonics. the abilities they give you is massive.
Robert Plant is in his 70s and doesn't mime. Robert can adjust alter the melody or lower the key if something is too high. Micky Dolenz of the Monkees is 79 and doesn't mime. Eric Clapton is 79 and doesn't mime.
and that's the point, Ken still want to "hit" the high notes where as other singers just find a lower key to hit the notes.
What songs he sings is different. Plant is much more mellow and has been since the 1980s.

The advent of modern technology has led to its prevalent abuse. All singers signed to a record label these days are expected and will use autotune or pitch correction even when they release their live DVD concerts. Cheryl Porter a very successful vocal coach on RUclips pitch corrects her scale vocal exercises. Ken Tamplin is just one amongst many who make himself sound better than he actually does. It's part of the current culture. I subtlely edit my covers although never using pitch correction softwares.
In most videos I can tell for sure he is miming. Havent watched him for years, because he doesnt really know what he is doing. But he is great at marketing ;)
I thought that was the point of taking his courses is to strengthen your voice and to sing everyday hitting the high notes and not damaging and straining the voice and being able to sing on key live?!?! As far as I am concerned, if somebody is suggesting that they''re performing "live", whether playing guitar or singing, then they should be performing "live" and not miming (I refuse to call it "lip syncing" as that, sort of, lends the practice some legitimacy); Ken is using videos like that to "advertise" his vocal academy but it's not live and is, therefore, fraudulent.

What really makes me question things is.. I've only seen 2 or 3 males that he has even REMOTELY promoted, and 1 of them was a really young kid... it's always HYPER-ATTRACTIVE women..OK, well, most women just have NATURALLY HIGHER REGISTERS for singing. Then, if you add in his constant picking apart some of the greatest singers of all times, like with Joe Elliott, Ken was truly just making fun of him and patting himself on the back 30 times a video and singing over what he's critiquing... he seems VERY ARROGANT and self aggrandizing...i just watched an interview with the AMAZING Rik Emmitt, and he was SO FREAKING HUMBLE❤...I am a singer/musician in a, purely, local-yocal band.. There's a video of Tamplin's i recently watched with about 10 or so singing examples of him singing into a mic in a studio. i thought his mouth didn't really line up to what i heard, but i dismissed it as ignorance on my part. i should have trusted my instinct.
i should have added, to the point in question, fraud is fraud. He's claiming one thing and doing something else. That's not ok. i don't like when the big pop stars lip-synch part of what's SOLD as live vocals, either. We spend way too much on tickets to be lied-to.
Honestly, I don't trust ANY singing videos unless I literally hear someone do it with no backing, no mystery harmonies, and some tiny imperfection somewhere. Miming to your own pre-recording is just lame, and it's rampant.

When performing live imperfections/changes makes that particular show unique and intimate for the fans. I've been to shows where the artist didn't start a song correctly, apologiezed and laughed along with the audience about it and the crowd went wild in the second go around. Things like that shows you that the artist cares AND makes more of a connection with the fans.
He’s 100% a con artist. Anyone who watched more of the footage knows that the second he attempted actual singing he started having awful voice cracks.

He is 100% miming and lip syncing. Ive noticed hes been doing it for years in his videos. But, when he started, back in the costa mesa studio days, in hild older version of the course he didnt lip sung on the videos.

I dont know why he is lip singing. I had a lesson with him recently this year in person and he is the real deal. I have had lessons with him virtually too and he also destroys in those lessons too. IDK why he is lip singing. He prolly records it and send it to his corpo team to mix and master and then edit and post his videos. The costa mesa days he was doing most of it all by himself.
I will also add that he does come off as a bit of a narissist, and has a ego at times. Its giving boomer energy. His marketting has also gotten very click baity and kinda scammy, like 90/2000s infomercials.
That is so lame. Ken just undermined any credibility he may have had. Age happens, voices change. A legit coach would know this, own up and I would think would teach how to adjust for those natural physiological changes.
Personally I think it 100% stinks on so many levels. We have grown to accept so much lip-syncing / miming and yes certain backing effects etc and orchestral parts etc are to some degree acceptable but a claimed 'live' vocal by a SINGING COACH who makes money on the basis that his vocal program must be demonstratable by himself, then fakes it, is outrageous! I've been performing most of my life and if you watch Ken's performances it's clear even before Fil's technical analysis, that he's miming. The out of sink mouth movements with some of the vocal line ends, the over expression facially, and then obivous moments when we hear a perfect vocal whilst his mouth is closed. As I say, this guy is selling a vocal teaching programme on the explicit basis that he must be able to deliver live too. He must either come clean and apologise and rebuild, or step away. It's a terrible example for upcoming generations of aspiring singers and musicians and he should have the integrity to realise that.

It's very odd. I believe these singers like Blackie Lawless and Paul Stanley have somehow convinced themselves that they are NOT lip syncing. There must be some mental gymnastics going on.
Paul Stanley used to say that the old singers who can't sing anymore should just retire and stop embarrassing themselves. Then he got older and started lip syncing for "live" shows. Every shred of respect I had for that egotistical hypocrite flew right out the window.

Well, I am a very serious musician that sings. He seems to be a California Valley dude who doesn't realize that he's just not very good. Cheezy but a nice guy. He loves music...but Ken is like a casino/ wedding singer. Think Bill Murray on SNL in the 70's or Andy Kaufman's alter ego Tony lounge singer. He doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. This whole situation is just disappointing to me because there was actually a time where I pretty much got all my information about vocals exclusively from Ken. Because he seem to be authentic and he seem to know what he was talking about. One of the wake up Coast for me with a lifestream when he played one of his old songs and he was clearly lip-synching and pretending to play guitar, and I just felt really insulting because he clearly knows how to do both those things so why didn’t he just do it? And his voice in his videos whenever he does cover his is just so processed and he pretty much lip-synchs all of them that it’s really hard to learn from them.

Your opinion is the correct one. I absolutely despise that it is becoming "industry standard" to mime/lip sync.. Some of these bloody vocal coaches will even teach it as acceptable in order to "protect your voice" - fuck that!!Rock and roll is meant to be authentic and fiercely individualistic. I'd much rather a band flat out cancel the show or perform without the singer than see the singer mime.
Eq, compress- go nuts. Even using autotune as an artistic effect (to deliberately sound like a robot maybe?) That can be cool. Where pitch correction crosses the line is when it is done to make things "industry standard." Fuck industry standards! You are an artist! I could TOTALLY hear the difference between when Ken was actually singing and when he was miming to a produced vocal track which either had a bit of reverb or delay (and probably compression as well). It was like night and day!
Hope you are well Jim. I have no problem with people miming to music video's when promoting new songs as everyone knows its not a live performance but miming as a vocal coach to a track is pretty bad. How to mime better than anyone else, where the proof is in the mime.

I am doing his free excercise for 4 weeks every day :chest warming up 17 minutes. I slow down to 25 % and build this up to regular speed; 60 minutes practise.
It works! I hit some tones better. But i have to practice at least one year to make some progress. And I payed nothing yet. 😀

Phil's 'Wings of Pegasus' channel does a lot of analysis of various singers, past and present. Many of them are very positive - mostly singers from the past who didn't have the tech to cheat. Many current-day singers can be proven to be using cheat-software.
Why is this controversial? It's hard data being used in a legitimate way. If a singer's feelings are hurt, then they should try being more honest about what they're doing, not complain about being exposed.

I remember my high school band had a show at a local dance and I hadn’t had time to learn one of the songs we played and I was to turn my volume down and just fake it and it killed a small part of me.
KT is miming and it was right to call him out, a good singer will work out how to sing a song, even Dio dropped the key on some songs as he got older, he did not mime or use technology, he simply changed key, if KT had done that I might have had some respect for him, but his attitude sucks, he is arrogant and a fraud
what really gets me is that he literally mimed LIVE as early as I think someone said 1989 or at least 90s. KT born in 63. So by 1993, he's 30. Why is he miming live at age 30? Is it maybe his vocal technique didn't serve him well? He knew he couldn't sing an entire live set with the same power and grit so he just mimed to the album cuts? Then doesn't that make his entire course a lie? I mean, he literally says " sing better than anyone else" and "the proof is in the singing". Then to help SELL his course, he sings "live" on his YT channel but most of those are mimed as well. So, it's just bad. If he was 71 and just started to mime from age, I MIGHT could see that but he's pretending to be a vocal coach and selling a course and STILL miming after all these decades. Just something very unethical about it all.

In the description he tries to make it seem as if performance shown in the video were real, when, in reality, he is actually miming to a studio recording.

I'd say you're better off asking WoP because I'm not really technical that way... I sing live dry because I don't like to 'hide' behind effects (plus if you make a mistake, the reverb or delay only repeats and exacerbates the mistake! yikes!)

He surely did for me some time ago and made me even feel like this failure (yeah that makes it so much easier to sing) and generally his way of teaching is extremely uninspiring in any way. Ken's fans will say "everybody does it" as if that justifies it. Everybody in rock doesn't do it. There's an expectation in rock music (and certainly for vocal teachers) to sing live and when people like Paul Stanley and Don Henley mime, people are disappointed. There's an expectation that pop singers will mime at least some of the concert because of the dances etc. Dua Lipa's response as to whether she mimes would be interesting. But Ken has an opportunity to admit that he mimes, because WoP has proved it (as you have). But he hasn't. He's choosing to be deceitful. He actually can sing, but chooses perfection over integrity. Also, if you Jim, are a vocal teacher with any merit (I don't know you), your opinion should matter and you're weakening your points by suggesting they don't.✌
Yes, there are plenty of older rock singers who don't resort to miming. I feel Ken should admit it, but he has a pattern of just denying it.
Kiss has been miming for decades. Even their "live" albums have vocal, drum, guitar and bass dubs.
