    THANK YOU!
As a retired recording engineer, I always said the proof is on the track.
Your software shows the PROOF that the people around Myles are either LYING or are being DECEIVED.
I think they owe an APOLOGY on their fan page.
    But they won’t.
Why? Because, as the novelist Upton Sinclair once said, “ it’s hard to get a man to understand something when his livelihood depends on him not understanding it.”

@@patrickhanly7458 Here's a *very* basic breakdown of how mixing was done in the tape age, before DAWs took over:
      - The multitracks were recorded to and stored on tape
      - During the mixing process, the tape was played back, and each channel on the tape went into a channel on the mixing console
      - Most large format mixing consoles had EQ and dynamics processing on every channel, plus lots of flexible internal routing, and obviously faders for volume control. By the mid/late 80s, some mixing consoles also had recall and flying faders (volume automation)
      - If you wanted to do any processing that wasn't built into the mixer, you needed outboard gear. There are outboard compressors, EQs, gates, expanders, distortion devices, reverbs, multi-effects processors, etc. Basically anything that's a plugin nowadays used to be dedicated hardware.
      - As I mentioned, there are rackmount digital reverb units, which gained popularity in the 80s. Before that, all reverb was mechanical (spring or plate) or natural rooms (chamber, hall, etc)
      - In order to actually capture the mix, it was recorded to 2-track tape. So if your console didn't have flying faders, and you wanted to adjust anything during the mix, you needed to do it manually as the multitrack played and the mix was recorded. Don't mess up!

She said when she worked with other musicians who took all day to get a guitar part down, she felt sorry for them. And, of course, Prince never used any kind of pitch correction or manipulation on his recordings. "Real music by real musicians," he used to tell his audiences. About a year later, I went to the studio to have it remastered and saw that the engineer, without telling anybody, had used auto tune (albeit subtly). He simply used it on everything he did and thought nothing of it. I think this happens a lot, probably always.

I think that happened to the remastered album from Celine Dion. Fil analyzed the recording of "all by myself" and compared it with the live version from the 90th and the remastered was heavily pitch corrected, so extreme, that she sounded like a robot. I think some engineer in the studio just pressed the button for automatic pitch correction and was done. I do not think, that Celine Dion herself has approved of this, she probably just agreed to the release of a "remastered" album.

If someone uses pitch correction…own it. One of our local blues legends had me review his newest CD, where he began to over-analyze his vocals to which I disagreed with his opinion and pointed out how Bonnie Raitt was critical of her vocals..to where he said, how can she be critical of her vocals…I was hoping for that response and I said..,exactly…he looked at me and laughed and said, “I get it”. I asked him to pitch correct a certain song and wait a week before listening to both versions…as expected, when he stepped back and listened objectively, the non corrected vocal had a “feel” the corrected vocal lacked…

It isn't that simple. If a person honestly believes something to be true, because they have it on good authority, then they will of course defend that "truth". What is important here is that those people accept their error and apologise to the person concerned. They may also want to consider double checking the evidence for themselves, before jumping on a soapbox. Sadly we all fail to do that on a regular basis, otherwise we wouldn't have time to do anything else.

Going to a show and being in a live setting is a lot more forgiving vocal-wise, as opposed to sitting in front of speakers in your car or your home. Pitch correction is the standard for ANY recording artist, so to not include it on a live recording would be terrible for any artist's image, unless they're perfect live. No one is. Even these older folks' favorite albums from the 70's and 80's were pitch corrected or re-recorded afterwards. Secondly, when AB play live and Myles sings live, there is nothing to compromise the live performance in terms of enhancements. They play live and you get what you get.

Oh, yeah ... thoroughly enjoyable. In the sense that Fil is a great teacher and I have learned so much from these analysis videos. (For the record, I did give it a thumbs up!) My initial takeaway from this one is that the reaction Adam received from the band insiders was wholly unsurprising.
I have attempted some online discussion with people in the industry who have taken issue with having pitch correction exposed. I have found that the all-important context in which any discussion, anywhere around pitch correction takes place will dictate the reaction people have.
Additionally, this analysis video kind of cements how difficult the fight will be to have pitch correction labeled as such or prevented altogether in the case of a seventies band, for example, being pitch corrected upon a 50th anniversary re-release or re-upload. We may even be talking about a fight that is essentially quixotic. But, that won't stop me from fighting back any way I can and Fil provides the needed inspiration!

I was in a garage band in high school, and we did a few gigs in some dives around town when you could still get in a bar at 18 years old. What I remember about singing was hitting the note felt good, and after the gig we would say, 'oh yeah, that was something'. Now, we were young and awful, but the audience would respond if I screamed a bit or got breathy, or otherwise pushed a note or phrase "out of the box" of intonation. It was fun and part of the show. Maybe producers believe that there is no real connection with an audience listening to a recording, so they undo some natural part of the vocals not realizing what is lost. Which is more important...pitch, or authenticity?

On the contrary, the moment that my ears detect something that doesn't sound 100% natural, any pleasure is killed. The same with everything else, like botox or lip injections or liposuction, any AI-produced "art", etcetera. Faked or "enhanced" presentations will never match natural presentations (warts and all).

We had a single day to do vocal tracks with a harmony singer. She had to do multiple lines and of course a few takes. Much later on, in mixing, we found a part where her voice was audibly tired and went flat at the very end of a chorus measure. We just shrugged and sharpened the couple of notes. What else could we do? Call her back and re-record that bit?

Musicians are artists and fans want to listen to the raw live act. Like going to an art exhibit, you go to see the artists paintings up close with all the flaws. You can't fully appreciate art by only looking at paintings online or in books. Or by only listening to music online or studio recordings where there is a good chance it's been heavily manipulated. No, it's the live shows where the magic of true artistry happens. Singing sharp or flat, missing a few notes in a guitar riff or changing a drum solo is not necessarily a bad thing. It's all part of the emotions of a live performance. That's what makes live performances so great!

Thank you for saying this Fil!
People have no idea what a real voice sounds like anymore.
I’m in the middle of recording my debut album. I recorded all last year, and released two singles with a producer who made every very shiny, and synthy and produced.
I liked it. It was scary to face the facts in the studio that my voice wasn’t exactly in tune. I was 15% flat, 17% sharp here and there, and it didn’t help that the song was written in quarter tones. 😝
He told me to sing straight tone and trust in the process, I did. And like I said I liked it.
I sounded so good! Exactly like Ariana, my ss’s removed, my highs angelic and dripping in reverb.
Flash forward to now, I’ve been working with a new producer, and he refuses to pitch correct. He’s leaning in to the vibrato and the fry and all the things I thought I had to iron out.
Listening back to the track it’s not perfect, but I BELIEVE her.
And that’s my new standard for vocals, does it serve the story? Do I believe it?
I’m so glad I found this new producer, and that he’s helping me embrace my voice. My old tracks are fine, but the singer sounds like any pop soprano, a whispery falsetto in a cave.
My new stuff sounds human and I love it.

    • @marcwhite9234

It’s actually better to be authentic, and slightly off key. It’s okay to be a little sharp or flat here and there. As long as you’re not living there it’s fine. When a vocal is too perfect, it sounds synthetic because it’s not human anymore.
