Wet Sanding & Polishing - Surfboard Glassing [Part 7 of 7]

- Sanding and polishing the gloss coat of a retro single fin surfboard. I used the variable speed sander with 320 grit, then wet sanded by hand with 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 grit sandpaper. You could go up to 1,200 or 1,500 grits. I applied rubbing compounding and buffed it with a microfiber cloth. I then applied polishing compound and buffed it with the variable speed polisher. This process worked, but ideally I would have buffed the rubbing compound with the variable speed polisher and wool bonnet and then used a foam polishing pad (I currently didn’t have one in my shaping bay) with the variable speed polisher for the polishing compound. Surfboard dimensions are 6' x 20.5 x 2.5. I've only glassed a handful of boards and am not an expert but this glassing process works for me.

I love surfing, building with my hands and making videos. Bendheim Boards is my outlet to fuel these passions. I'm self-taught and am not an expert, but these videos show the process that works for me. Follow along for new videos every month!
I’m in love with how this board turned out. That color with those pin stripes looks amazing
This set of videos is outstanding. Thanks for showing all the steps! I'm an enthusiastic ding repair newbie and this helped me understand the layers/steps alot. Especially liked the masking tape on chip brush bristles technique!
Awesome, thanks for the feedback! Before I started glassing, I bought a $30 junk board that I practiced ding repairs on. Its the best way to get started before jumping into glassing a full board.
Beautiful board! Mesmerizing video!
that board really is beautiful
Congrats on finishing such an amazing board!
Thanks man 🤙
Beautiful job, real classy.
Nice Greenough fin touch at the end
Nice job! Will have these on a big screen nearby on next board. Thanks,
Thanks man! Glad to hear it
Bloody beautiful bro
Awesome mate well done nice board
Nice looking, great work. Keep it up 🤙🏾
Thanks man!
Brutal mi bro 🤙🏾
Very good set of videos, am learning a lot! Gracias mi amigo, let me know if you ever come to Cabo San Lucas!!
Awesome glad to help! You got it man!
holy christ, outstanding
Beautiful, hard work
Great work and cool content
Thanks man!
Makes me itch watching it
Nice work bro
that’s sick! you just gained a sub 🤙🏽
🤙
Hi, I'm trying to learn as much as I can from your videos, I have a hole I'm repairing in my board and later I'd like to do my first shape. Are there "do's" and "don'ts" regarding painting vs tinted resin for board color(s)? Advantages or disadvantages? Thanks for taking the time to make all of your videos!!
If you paint the foam, make sure you use water based paints or acrylic paints. Resin tints look better in my opinion and give it a deeper color. Spray painting or airbrushing the foam can also look cool and is a little easier. Lots of cool 80s boards were airbrushed. Check out Mark Richards board to see lots of airbrush looks.
Great videos, thanks! Can you tell me what are the two red bottles/brand you use for the cutting & polishing.? Also where can you purchase the white buffing wheel you use.?? Thanks, cheers.!!
All right, the best !!!! I"m Brazilian
Obrigado tchê! Eu sou gaúcho (morei no Rio Grande Do Sul)
Tanner. You da man!
Thanks dawg!
Great video! Is the polishing compound different than the rubbing compound? And if so, what’s the difference? Thanks I’m advance!
Yes the rubbing goes on first and is more aggressive at removing small scratches. Then Polish
Hey man. Thanks for this. I’ve got a McT Nose Rider with a purple tinted bottom that’s been scratched the hell out of on the stupid third taullight in a jeep. Will this be the best way to get it out? Or would shavings from blanks do the job. By the way car polish did zilch.
Namaste
🌞
Sounds like you'll need to sand the scratches out. I'd start with 80 grit sandpaper and then progressively work through higher grits until you get to 400. This will give you a sanded finish. If you want a gloss finish you'll need to start wet sanding up to 1,000 or 1,500 grit and then polish. Just be careful not to burn through to the fiberglass cloth when doing the initial sanding, otherwise you'll have to put a new coat of resin on the area. Good luck man!
Thanks for making another video! i was wondering ive had issues were the compound just sticks to the board and doesnt want to come out unless i add lot of water and rub it and i putting the compound on wrong? adding to much? or not using enough water? always tricky. I see you put the rubbing compound/rub it/ than remove microfiber/than polish? Polishing seems to be tricky for me
If you're letting it dry before removing it with the microfiber cloth or polisher, that could be your problem. Be sure not to let it dry. I use Meguiar's which you can find at auto shops. Just follow the instructions on the product and you should be good.
amazing! ! what’s in the name and brand from the red bottle? thx
Nice
Hi bend. What if im removing a faulty one first? How do i get it out please?
I have shadow surf board
Is that good or do you want to give your TB😘
What polish do you use that’s ok for a surfboard? I’ve fixed a ding and sanded the sun cure. But it has scratches now. 😢
Hi bro! really nice job congrats :).... I only have one question. The first grit that you use (320) is the red one for wood or is also a water grit (black one). thank you very much!
The first one is 320 and is a wet/dry sandpaper
Wicked job chef! What kind of compound and polish do you use?
Thanks! I used Meguiar’s
Beauty of a board. Well done!
What resin did you use for the final gloss coat?
Polyester Gloss resin
I just did my final sand on the board and was polishing it, but the polish made the board appear matte instead of shiny. Do you have any ideas as to why it might have turned out like this or how I could fix it? Thank you!
Just make sure your going through all progression of grits all the way up to 1,000 grit wet sanding or 1,500 wet sanding. Each grit removes the scratches from the previous grit. (explained better and in more detail on greenlight surf supply's instructions on their website). Have to get through all that sanding before polishing.
What is the blue thing on the variable speed sander called?
Love your vids, keep it up
Also, what is the name of your variable speed sander?
It’s the blue Flexpad. Can’t remember the model on the variable speed sander. Passed down from my father
Thx
Sweet sequence. What grit progression did you use?
Thanks! I used the variable speed sander with 320 grit, then wet sanded by hand with 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 grit sandpaper. But you could go up to 1,200 or 1,500 grits.
How do you avoid swirl marks from the sander? If you get them, do you hand sand them out first, before polishing?
Always keep the sander moving and don’t keep it in one spot too long. Long even strokes.
Very nice. I bet you can't wait to get it in the water. Quick question: how come you are hand sanding when it comes to the wet sanding part?
Thanks man. Just personal preference. I don’t want to get water all over my variable speed sander.
Hi Tanner, nice job...board looks fantastic! Are your compound& polish from the auto industry or boat supplies?
Thanks man! I used Meguiar’s which is from the auto industry. www.meguiars.com/automotive/products/meguiars-clear-coat-safe-polishing-compound-g18116-16-oz-liquid
Is there a special rubbing compound or could I use something like Maguire's?
I use Maguires and it works well
Upload a video of you surfing this board would be sick
🤙
How's it going, I have a question when you pass the 320 sandpaper, doesn't that sandpaper get bogged down by the resin? And another question, how many sandpapers do you use per side?
No it doesn’t. Lots of progressive grits all the way up to 1,000 then Polish. Greenlight surf has more info on their website
What grit you using on your polisher at the start on the rails? Takes some skill not to sand too much there!
Ignore me mate. Just read your description
What type of respirator filter do you use for sanding fiberglass?
3M respirator from Home Depot
What’s grits to you use going up from 320?
400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, Polish
Curious as to why you started with 320 grit on the variable speed instead of something lower like 150?
I don’t want to sand off the gloss coat so I’m just prepping it for polishing and start with 320. 150 would take too much off.
Can you shine polish your hotcoat to mirror a gloss?
No sanding resin doesn’t give a high gloss finish like gloss resin
@@BendheimBoards but you can get it close?
Awesome board! So after the gloss coat you started with 320 grit?
Thanks! Yes I started with 320 to remove the shine and then went up from there.
Hey mate what are you working in? Looks like a greenhouse?
Yes it’s a walk in green house that I bought on Amazon. Planning to do a walkthrough tour video next month 🤙
Sensacional
Obrigado!
So, how does it works ? Now I am curious 🤔
The board is super fun! Came out better than I expected.
@@BendheimBoards Glad to hear that. Enjoy the good surfing with ur piece of art.
where to order???you had my focus all the way since the template!!!
It’s just a hobby so I don’t sell boards, but thanks for watching man!
That’s a shame. Your work is beautiful
Glass!! What compound was that? Maguire 's?
Yes Meguiar’s rubbing compound and polishing compound 🤙
@@BendheimBoards I'm doing my first this weekend. Any tips?
Read the walkthrough instructions on greenlight surf supply’s website for how to glass a surfboard. They give you all the needed details and what to expect. Good luck!
Awesome video. Quick question, what’s the name of the ventilator mask you’re wearing? I work at a surfboard shop building boards too and that mask looks like a nice investment
Thanks! It’s a $30 3M respirator I got from Home Depot.
👍👍👍
how many hours did glassing this board take in total?
I didn’t track it so not sure. It takes me a long time because I only get about 3-4 days a week to work on my boards after I put my kids to bed. I’ve got a busy schedule plus filming really slows me down.
What kind of sander polisher do you use?
Its just called a variable speed polisher
Sir what grit of sand papers you use from start to finish?
What's your rpm you are sanding with? I easily burn through sometimes...
I go really slow when sanding. Like around 1-2 setting. For the buffing pad I go a little higher between 2-3.
What grit sand paper are you using when you do the initial sanding?
I used 320 grit. More info in the video description.
What grits did you go through?
I used the variable speed sander with 320 grit, then wet sanded by hand with 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 grit sandpaper. But you could go up to 1,200 or 1,500 grits.
Tanner Bendheim I appreciate it. I started with 400 and ended at 800. I just picked up 500,600, and 1200. Maybe that will do the trick next time. Thanks for the videos
what brand compound and polish did you use?
