DIY Debt Free Living!

  • This week we're taking a break from traditional bow hunting and bow building to take a look at some of the other DIY projects we've got going on and to answer the question of how we can afford to live our lives the way we do.
If you've been following me for very long you'll know that we do a lot of traveling and split our time between our homestead in north Idaho and my family's ranch in Florida. We're able to do this because we've made it a point to live our lives as debt free as possible. One way we do that is through a DIY approach to things.
In this video we'll talk about how I built my own 4 wheel drive pickup truck, a crew cab power wagon with 12v Cummins that runs on waste vegetable oil (WVO), how we're using salvaged and repurposed barn wood to remodel our Idaho farm house, how we're building a log cabin in florida using salvaged logs, and building a DIY Bandsaw Mill using scrap steel and an old diesel engine!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

    Dude ... you ROCK!
I'm 63 and remember living the life you have before I met a fork in the road and made the wrong choice. You father must be a great man and VERY proud of you... apple trees make apples! I only follow a couple of RUclips channels, too many posers on the web... you're the real thing! Keep it coming and keep living the dream for all of us that took the wrong fork in the road.

For those with the ability to wrench on their own vehicles, buying a car on payments is a losing proposition. My current truck is a 92 F-150 that I picked up for $400. New clutch, shift fork, windshield, and various other parts I am into it for about $800 and it has been very reliable.
Unfortunately I have not been so smart about acquisition of hunting gear. Now I'm working on no longer being a debt slave.
While I am very jealous of you, I am also very happy for you and impressed by your self discipline. A wise writer said that Godliness with contentment is great gain.

Love this video. When I started hunting 10 years ago I was surrounded by people who treat it like a hobby and buy buy buy all the best of the best. I quicky went from being drawn to hunting for primal and self sufficient reasons to being pushed away because of how expensive it seemed. I stopped hunting all together for year and have recently gotten back into because now that I'm older I realize that I can carve my own path and do it my way. I like to keep things simple and maybe not cheap but there is a way to progress into hunting without needing all the best of everything from the jump. You can kill a deer with a decent self bow, good arrows and heads and some practice and patience.

Clay I hear you! My wife and I built our log house 100% on our own, foundation to roof and paid for it as we went. Just a couple of precautions we decided to build a porch all the way around the house mainly to keep water away from the logs. Also remember every bug on earth wants to eat your pine logs, Bull ants, termites, carpenter bees, yellow jackets and the list goes on! I've had issues with all of them. But I wouldn't do it any different. I look forward to each and every video. >>>>>----------->

Nicely done on this video my friend. I acquired a saw mill this past year, Saved up for it so i could pay cash for it. I can say this, even on a small one acre place the wife and I are currently living debt free on, I was able to saw up enough wood from our place as well as a few trees neighbors have given us, that it has completely paid for itself with out build. I have used the wood from this place (it was originally her dads place) (we had to remove a few trees to get her shop put it) I milled those trees up, and that wood was used as the paneling in her leather shop for the interior walls. It turns dout very beautiful and rustic. As well as I have built a wood shop, for the rest of our little stay at home and work from home business. I am still working on it, taking a while, but like you, getting the wood from various other places, free and milling it ourselves, we are saving a bunch of money and being able to build small, stay debt free. My goal is to start a small home, 800-900 SF house in another year. I plan to keep building it just as I have the leather shop and wood shop as we can, mill our own wood, and do as much of it as I can. So far I have only had to hire out the concrete work for the wood shop, it is just too much out of my skill set to do that much concrete by myself. Thanks again, I know this video is older, hopefully you can give us some more updates on it as time allows. I do understand, that having such a variety of content on youtube does not always work, but keep up the great work and know you are appreciated sir.

Boracare those logs while they are on the ground while they're easy to roll & get to. Powder post & old wood borer beetles can be a major problem down here in the southeast. We learned the hard way. We have a chainsaw mill which is great if you don't have a large truck or bobcat to move things around.
Best thing you can do is never take out a loan. We lived with family, mucked stalls for rent, lived in tents as traveling trail builders, and lived in 100sf shed while we were building our house...the sacrifices were all worth it. Problem is that when you learn a lot of skills, everyone wants you to come over and do things for them, so you just get busier all the time. Good luck with all your projects!

I would like to see more content like this. I love your archery videos, however this too is something im strongly interested in. I am an old school jack of all trades as well. I have tried to start both a woodworking based business as well as currently trying to start a fabrication business. I know how to build, fix, restore much. What im terrible with is modern tech and modern style marketing, how to get my name out there type thing. I make money at times buying something cheap or getting free, fix and flip but that is not consistent enough. RUclips is my learning central as i rarely watch regular tv, so i watch youtube on the tv😁. Thanks for putting out great vids!

I really enjoyed this video Clay...demonstrating your love, enjoyment, and skills at traditional archery/hunting through your videos, this particular video explained how you and your family accomplish this lifestyle, while at the same time providing the viewer an excellent life lesson on finances that anyone can benefit from. I think a lot of your ability stems from an get it done attitude that allows you to develop the necessary skills through the process. While we haven’t been formally introduced, we met when you came to the Twin Oaks Tennessee Classic. At that time I didn’t know if your RUclips channel, though others there told me about it. I am a member at Twin Oaks, and have helped folks build self bows during the Classic since the first year we started the Self Bow Challenge. I remember watching you work with the draw knife removing wood from the belly in the early stages of tillering that what became a heavily recurved Osage selfbow. I offered to remove some of that excess belly wood with the bandsaw, which I’ve done hundreds of times before. You politely declined my offer, and I respected your obvious skills at using a drawknife reducing the belly, when I typically only used one for chasing a ring on the back. I also watched you recurve the tips, and your technique of focusing more on the edges and taking it slow. Your skills and knowledge was evident to someone as myself with a background in making bows. This attitude of working with what you have...what is available to you and can be used to reach a desired end, is an example in this video of making your own sawmill in order to build your own cabin! Impressive!

You bet I'd like to see your other projects. I envy your ability to do what you do. Fell in love with the old dogtrot southern style houses that were common in the South, not so long ago. They were built in sections, joined by a breeze way and fronted by a long porch. Sometimes they had another porch extending from the breezeway and connecting to another room, usually used for a kitchen. It strikes me that such a house would be perfect for a hot southern climate, lots of porches and shade and ready to catch any breeze that might happen to pass by. Just a suggestion. You might research them a little bit if you're not familiar with them. They were commonly called dogtrot or cracker houses. But, so far as my way of thinking goes, whoever thought of the concept was a pretty sharp cookie. Beet wishes and good luck.

Another good video clay. Definately would be interested in the new builds. I practice a similar lifestyle myself to a degree. Cant stand debt, so if i can make it i can. And also it helps not to care much about material wealth. As long as i can hunt and fish, make my knives, and enjoy hike in the mountains, and the occaisional spin on my harley im golden!!! Keep up the good work clay. As in regards to the engine, have you tried a pressure washer into the manifold? Might help remove the gunk. If it turns out its not useable try looking for a steam engine, or even to borrow one. You would be surprised at the amount of them that old farmers have lying around.

Please keep them coming! All of your videos are top notch. I’d like to see more catch and cooks like the hog you cooked whole in a pit.
