Clay, anyone who can accomplish what you did out in that hostile, unfriendly environment for 76 days all by yourself, deserves a lot of respect and admiration. That's a good endorsement for the P4 and from a guy who's life depended on the tool... doesn't get any more real than that. Thanks for all your videos.
@@clayhayeshunter you should look at the Leatherman Arc. Leatherman listened to all the complaints from customers on the P4 and the Arc is the final product after they made all those changes.
How can you not respect Clay? A humble man who teaches himself skills to a level of mastery, reviewing a Leatherman - an easy must-watch that did not disappoint. Love what you do, Clay - all of it!
I am hard multitool user! I have literally worn out several. A week ago I got a P4 I love it! Not sure why everyone hates on it its great and innovative. Every tool works great even the little file is much better than I thought. The ease of use is unmatched in a multitool.
That dovetail box is incredible! Most don't understand how to turn a tree into those boards at all let alone doing the dovetail joinery with a leatherman.
You helped me alot in choice what multitool to buy. I use it every day at work, at home or in hunting. This little toy is really helping me in my life. Ordinarily i rarely leave comments. But this video deserve it. Thanks!
Leatherman tools are terrific for what they provide. I personally like the Surge over the P4. It's capable of using T-shank jig saw blades without any modification and the blade is one of Leatherman's toughest blades. The Surge is a beast of a multitool and mine has been through hell and back. Thanks for you videos Clay. I've been a sub way before you going on Alone and it's really nice to see how unchanged you are afterwards. Congrats and again, thanks for the content.
Had 3 of them over they years aswell as a bunch of other multitools. They are hands down the best multitool ever produced if you want maximum capability.
Yup I can confirm that this tool is from another dimension, a truly jewellery. I simply randomly take out from my pocket and play with it just to enjoy how beautiful this thing is made.
While the description says "tool only" it does come with one each of a bi-metal ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI and HCS blade plus an adaptor plate for non-DeWalt blades. Wish I had known that before I bought the blade kit, but oh well. Since I already have a DeWalt drill, charger and batteries there was no need to buy more of those so this was a great deal. There is one other consideration. DeWalt does't sell the depth guide separately so you need to buy the three parts which make it up -- the N275350 block assy, the N275341 metal rod and the N278801 knob. Amazon does sell all three.
I have been carrying a Leatherman Supertool 200 for at least 20 years or so, or my Supertool 300 (I have both). Both are truly excellent. As for a pocket clip, I have a leather belt sheath.
I'm normally not swayed by promotional videos... but the amount of your video content that you are using a Leatherman is endless so you know 💯 that the love for this tool came long before his endorsement! I was sold before I even watched this. Been on my want list for a good bit Great video !!
at 4:45 that box lid moved but I don't see any wind, squirrels suspect. also great review I've used a leatherman for years and thinking about getting a P4
I figured it out. It’s leaned up against the box next to him and his leg bumps the log and causes it to slide over. I thought it was some paranormal stuff at first. But I had to watch it pretty close on a large tv to understand what was going on and debunk what I thought was happening. Lol 😂
I have a Gerber multi-tool that I use every single day but it doesn't come apart like yours does the fastest thing that I can make come out is the pliers and that's it the rest you have to peel out with your fingers and the knife is not very thick either I've already had one to break. I know I can send them back to Gerber but I'm not. You're pretty good old buddy. Thanks for the video have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
The Free P4 is an awesome MT, flips fluidity butterfly style. Some minor mods on my tool, serated blade file the top of the tip to make a tanto piercing blade. The Saw same and make a drywall saw, file an edge that matches the last saw tooth. Hidden tweezers, a SAK tweezer held with a small flat magnet at the plier side inside of the handle.
I was looking through different multi tools last year and could not decide which one precisely because the finer and important detail is NOT in the descriptions. Thanks for the review, it helped me a ton. Especially the practical observations ...
I’ve got a collection of Leatherman tools (Bond, Rebar, Charge TTi, Signal, P2 which my wife has taken for herself, and the P4). The P4 is my daily carry, and agree with your review. The little ruler thing you asked about is kinda pointless as a ruler, but the notch at the heel is a wire stripper and there is a bit driver which you can purchase that fits over the flat head end. It’s a ratcheting driver which is awesome.
I loved this episode, wow! A master reviewing the master of multi-tools, WOW! You should be a ambassador for Leatherman Clay [if you are not already]...Because of your review, I am going to buy me a P4!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ease-of-use relative to other Leatherman tools is high. Pocket clip is great--don't like fishing around or worrying about it slipping out of my pocket unexpectedly. It's nice that Mr. Clay took the liberty to field test it for us...haha. Thanks!
The Leatherman Arc is the product Leatherman created after getting years of feedback from customers on the P4. So the Arc is the P4 improved in every way.
Thanks for the comparison, and congrats for the amazing things you´ve made with the P4! Love the box. And the planes! And I was playing with the thought of buying me a P4, but our unbelievable gun laws in Germany forbid to carry a tool that has a blade that can be opened and fixed with one hand... Bummer! So in the drawer goes my Charge. I undug my old Supertool, that is allowed, but it is really awkward to open, takes at least three hands! Enjoy your P4, Clay!
I was sold within the first few minutes, it felt like the comparison was directed at me because I currently own and heavily use the rebar, for the last 4-5 years. It has been a great tool. I am going to order the p4 based on this review. Keep up the great work man. I know it is hard to balance everything in life, especially with a family, business and extracurricular activities but you are teaching, inspiring and challenging people through your channel and status. Try to let the negativity roll off and keep after it man! Hopefully get to meet you in person someday, I am a member of the Traditional Bow Hunters of Georgia.
I own about a dozen Leatherman Tools. I concur with Clay, the "P4" is the choice for me!! I've used a Leatherman since 1983, when they were first introduced to the market. I still have the Leatherman, in it's original leather case. Sweet tools!
@veryhappyfatboi, For my use, I prefer the P4. However, you can't go wrong with any Leatherman Tool. My recommendation is to match the tool with how you plan on using it. What jobs do you want the tool to do? Then, get the tool that best suits the job. At the end of the day, just go ahead and buy both. LOL Ha!
After having the sidekick in pocket since 2016, I felt it was time for an upgrade, I wanted one that the tools locked open! So I figured I would give this try.
I just finished watching 8 , for the first time. I noticed that box and thought I missed an episode, lol. I've been think about getting a leatherman , but got to buy one of those saws that you used on the show first. Good review. The reason I never bought a multitool before is every one that was gifted to me usually broke on the first use. Leatherman p4
The p4 is my favorite and i use it a ton never carried a multi til thos tool but ive carried a knife my whole life the mechanics and magnetic opening and closing are the best Ive ever felt in a tool period once you handle the p4 you feel a huge difference in quality
I went with the Leatherman Wave + because of the bit driver. I needed a 3/32" drill bit for making fishing lures out of wood, antler and bone. I can use the bit driver extender with hex shank drill bits or modify the drill bit to fit directly into the Leatherman bit driver. Of course if you are going on Alone they have special restrictions so this might not be allowed, Idk. I use the file extensively to shape my lures. I might replace my serrated blade with a bone saw. I've caught eight fish so far with my deer antler lures!
Ordered one and excited to get it. You should have put a referral link but maybe some would question the authentic review if you had. Anyway, enjoyed watching you on the show and this review!
I prefer the Supertool 300 and the Rebar style for two reasons: 1. Tool position in hand. The Supertool lines up the "spine" of the tool to the handle meaning the tool is in line with your palm and it just seems better for me. 2. Safety. With the tool being on top you have the bottom handle as a stop against the tool if the locking mechanism fails. You don't have that with the other models outside the tools inside the handle.
Would you do a video on how you did the dove tails with your leatherman, and maybe add how to do a normal dove tail? Cause I've never done one, but have had several times where I wish I knew how and would've helped.
I’ve had the Leatherman Pulse since the day they went on the market, never seen a newer model that does anything above and beyond the Pulse. My Leatherman was used on every McCormick tractor built between 2000 and 2007.
I prefer the Surge for an even heavier duty tool but I almost always carry my P4 because of the weight difference. My old worn in Surge opens almost the same as my P4 but I was able to do a blade swap because of how the back locks work, you couldn't do that to the Surge. I swapped the plain edge so it's the left handed primary blade.
That Free P4 looks a lot like my Charge Ti titanium that has served my well over ten years. The rounded corners when using pliers is really welcome difference from all the cheaper models I have tried during the years 👍
The Leatherman Arc is basically the P4 after Leatherman fixed everything that customers complained about on the P4. I almost bought the Surge until I learned about the Arc.
I know what you mean, I used a stone but a piece of granite rock with nearly flat edge for an emergency sharpener. I have also used other stone but they are not having the mini bumps in the flat edge due to the way Granite is, to get a better quicker sharp without needing a ton of passes in a flat rock. Quarts is the same way if you can find a flat edge on one, not smooth flat but a tad jagged.
Nice tool indeed but where I live I can’t carry any knife blade that can be opened with one hand . So I carry the Victorinox Swiss tool . One other reason is that I like the fact that I can access all the tools from the outside . The most useful tool on the Swiss tool… the two blades, the saw, the awl, and believe or not the file with a hack saw blade. When I move to Tennessee in two years I will definitely give the p4 a well deserved look. love all your videos on bow making, hunting.. etc keep up the good work and thank you for sharing what you have learned.
That odd tool with the measurements on it was to be used for fishing without a pole straight down from the edge using a thicker material for the line. I know this as I have seen people use the tool fishing at lakes before with other tools using this. some even on boats using it to get the fish that are under the boat more easy, as a winter ice fishing pole is sometimes not short enough.
@@dman3398 Yes this was a dual use tool I have seen people use for both, my dad Used his on his multi tool for stripping wires rather then find his wire stripper. The only other tool I have seen the numbers on is the Saw tool that is more a light bone or small branch saw then an actual saw.
Wow that box is impressive, even Roy Underhill would be impressed! I've carried a Charge for years, similar to the P4. I've got an original Leatherman I've had for a couple of decades, they have come a long way! I've been debating a Victorinox tool or a new Leatherman, looks like Leatherman scores again.
Just came across this vid of yours. Feel it is covering item type I have used. Essentially, part of EDC once upon a time. I used a Leatherman of 1970s vintage til late 80s. Old Leatherman had developed some issues and came upon a Gerber. Carried that Gerber from late 80s til few years ago (2013, 2014) when lost it. Big thing was it had tool type knew of max utility range AND it fit comfortably in my hand. Moreover, I wish could find another, nostalgia if nothing else.
YOU got a lot of work and a lot of value out of that Leatherman. I have the newish Leatherman Bond model, with the lighter primary blade. I did not get the optional clip because I never found them to be comfortable in my hand for any persistent use. Yours looks to be THE model for tradesmen who don't need the drive head for auxiliary bits.
I've carried the super tool 300 for many many years mine is like a butterfly knife 1 handed operation... I can always get to my tool quickly depending on what she looks like lol... I'll be up grading to the P-4 soon
Exactly. If you know Leatherman tools history, the Arc was literally created after Leatherman listened to all the complaints/recommendations on the P4. It is basically just an improved P4.
This is why I like my Muti tool Leatherman Main one a Hodgon (Canadian designed I think) is that I can open it one hand with a bit of body for 50% of the opening. I have the tools on the inside ready as I can then if using a tool for a long time other then the small scissor, get my tools so they do not close back into me by closing the item up to prevent the tool I am using from closing back in on itself. I am one that has had the tools close inward on me and I end up cutting myself with outer tool models like my dads actual Leatherman brand model with outer tools. Also mine has a set of screw tips in a small pouch on back for use In fixing something quick when I do not have a screw driver or drill with bits. Now for some reason the Leatherman like tool has a metric measuring tool on the outside making me think my model is the Canadian designed version. If I could find my model, I would get the thing for my brother, I might try again here soon for this for Christmas to find it or a very similar model. The tool is nice and I love using it despite the minor pain when using the pliers due to some sharp edges that could have been fixed on the model design by making the part that holds the tools in with a wider steel frame that had ergonomic edges to them like another I have. The other I have an Ozark Trail one is odd with tools on the outside that do not lock in place well when closed due to being a cheap Walmart tool but lock overly well in place when using. I hate the Steel used as it is not durable unlike the other model it gets these odd rolls on the edges that are not the blade edge but non sharped edge. The pliers on the Ozark Trail model suck as they are spring style that I hate and had to remove the spring due to rust issues. lastly a number of the tools are odd things that do not work at all unless they are used as flat tip screwdrivers and one or two that are tools with these dull blades that do not work at all.
They literally did that on the Leatherman Arc. The Arc was designed after Leatherman listened to all the complaints of the P4 from customers. It's just an improved version of the P4 in every way.
My wingman served me well for 5 years the this year the Phillips head snapped while in was doing some prep for the hurricane ....think I'll move of to the p4
Send your wingman in and they’ll fix it. They have an awesome warranty. Still buy the P4 but have your wingman fixed and throw it in a bug out bag or something
Wow! The box is seriously impressive, weldone! I have an old standard issue black Core. It's falling apart now. Leatherman have told me they'll replace it, but they don't make the Core any more, so I thought I'd pay a few UK £ and get a Surge. Never thought about the P4, 'til now. Good job in BC Clay, like many others I felt there were too many restrictions for a really classic series (and too many griz as well). Hey ho! Regards P
I had a super tool for years and a friend broke the small screwdriver. I contacted Leatherman and they said if I shipped it to them, they would replace it with a compatible model. 7 days after I sent it off, I received their top of the line model including a new case free of charge. Great company. I don't think it will matter if they no longer make that model.
I do not like using the blade on the Wave because the edges of the handle in that position is sharp. Other than that it is an amazing tool that saves me on camping and road trips. Recently I needed to strip some wires of the trailer light/brake cable for the trailer I was pulling, and I needed the pliers to pull fuses for the ones that shorted out in my truck fuse box that shorted out as a result of a faulty cable. Back on the road in 30 minutes in a remote part of British Columbia. Special thanks to Mike and Don for their advice.
So, I've been reading a lot of reviews for the P4, and there's some suggestion that LT might adjust small features in future generations. Yours is one of the older reviews, and I'm wondering if you know whether reviewers comments; your's and others are leading to a new tool?
I don't know if you have realized it since this video, but the Leatherman Arc is literally everything that was wrong with the P4 improved as per customer feedback on the P4. It's better in every way.
I prefer the Surge because of the replacable jigsaw blades T shank adaptor. I'm surprised you don't use a wrist loop of paracord to avoid dropping it when using it single handed. Totally agree about the Rebar handle edges, gloves or callused use only ! It's why I never bought the OG Leatherman. Famous last words about batoning ! ☹️ Always baton blade unlocked people 👍
I think you should work with the Leatherman Co to design a tool that has all the tools you would you would recommend for an Alone type use. Call it the Clay Hayes Alone Special.
Great video. I haven't had tv for about 16-17 years. I try to catch all the videos from the show on the web. As a working carpenter, I love the carving skills. The dovetail box is bad azz.
Awesome video! Love watching you on the show! I appreciate your knowledge and skill. Great job. You’re an inspiration to all of us. I was wondering how you kept the Leatherman from rusting out for all those days in harsh weather. I’ve had a Wave in a drawer in my garage for a while and it is full of rust and the inner tools are almost impossible to get out with using my finger nails. How would you lube this in a long term survival situation if you don’t have lubricants in your kit? They do rust! Thanks again.😊
I started laughing when i saw you come out on that last episode sitting on a dovetail box, had to explain to my family why lol... everyone else was starving and Clay was focusing on his joinery work.
I use the OHT as well. I use it mostly at work as it's a little big for me to edc. Only complaint is how small the blades are. Still love the tool though
Clay, anyone who can accomplish what you did out in that hostile, unfriendly environment for 76 days all by yourself, deserves a lot of respect and admiration. Awesome video brother can’t wait to see more hunting and how to video love it
Nice tool indeed but where I live I can’t carry any knife blade that can be opened with one hand .
Swisstool is a good tool.
Excellent job. I get the feel for how it works.
I cant think of a better person for a company to sponsor. I hope you reached out to them.
Great review. My P100 goes where I go, and is a great adjunct to my tool collection
The little notch is a wire stripper, for electrical connections. The fishing use is a cool idea.
Lmao a fishing pole
Between you and Matt Graham, you guys understand why I enjoy my lifestyle. You guys should colab. We'd all get along. Lol
I have a Leatherman "Wave" and carry it everywhere! My next upgrade will be the P4! Thanks Clay!
Sure thing
I've carried the super tool 300 for many many years mine is like a butterfly knife 1 handed operation... I can always get to my tool quickly depending on what she looks like lol... I'll be up grading to the P-4 soon
I can't wait for clay to get his hands on the ARC for a month or 2 and let us know
Exactly. If you know Leatherman tools history, the Arc was literally created after Leatherman listened to all the complaints/recommendations on the P4. It is basically just an improved P4.
I've had the Rebar and P4. Love them both, but the P4 has been my EDC every day since I got it 6 mos ago.
4:45 board slides in the background.
The knife on the P4 is extremely sharp and I actually chopped off a piece of my thumb and it sliced straight through
You had me at loose and free swinging!
😆
4:47 the ghost loves the leatherman as well
This is why I like my Muti tool Leatherman Main one a Hodgon (Canadian designed I think) is that I can open it one hand with a bit of body for 50% of the opening. I have the tools on the inside ready as I can then if using a tool for a long time other then the small scissor, get my tools so they do not close back into me by closing the item up to prevent the tool I am using
from closing back in on itself.
Only thing I would change(just me), is I'd trade the serrated blade for a longer file.
Thanks for the review.
They literally did that on the Leatherman Arc. The Arc was designed after Leatherman listened to all the complaints of the P4 from customers. It's just an improved version of the P4 in every way.
Great stuff drawing me back !
“BAM!”….nice job!
The magnet is very useful too. You could make a compass in a survival situation.
Really detailed product description .
Love the P4, scissors are really handy. Thing is a workhorse.
Why did that board in the back moved at 4:45 ?
You the man. Just sold them 1 more !
That box is very cool, good job Clay!
Always baton blade unlocked people 👍
I think you should work with the Leatherman Co to design a tool that has all the tools you would you would recommend for an Alone type use. Call it the Clay Hayes Alone Special.
Shoot’em a message and tell them that😉
@@clayhayeshunter I will! 😀
@@clayhayeshunter Just sent them an email with the suggestion.
@@NDFlyFisher @Clay Hayes it's a great suggestion, sold 1 with me!
I like my wave+ if the wave opened like those. Game changer
I Love my P4 as well great video.
Great video. I haven't had tv for about 16-17 years. I try to catch all the videos from the show on the web. As a working carpenter, I love the carving skills. The dovetail box is bad azz.
Thanks buddy
Great, ... with a comment like that Clay, there won't be any left on the shelves!!!
I want one now! Do you see it being adapted to hold a ferro rod? Love the content and watching the show. I am so inspired 🙏🏻🥰👏👍🏻💫
Best review! 👏
Wave + for me. Nice tools for sure.
Big fan sir!!!
I started laughing when i saw you come out on that last episode sitting on a dovetail box, had to explain to my family why lol... everyone else was starving and Clay was focusing on his joinery work.
🤷♂️😜
Leatherman need to have you consult on their next model. The Hayes.
The Hook tool on the ruler is a wire stripper Mr Clay Hayes
Nice. I like my leatherman OHT as i can just 'flick' the pliers open.
I use the OHT as well. I use it mostly at work as it's a little big for me to edc. Only complaint is how small the blades are. Still love the tool though
a well maintained leatherman with friction fit is one hand use too you just need a bit of force and you need to know what your doing
At 17:05 that’s a ruler and the little “tang” thing in a wire stripper
Thanks, thumbs up video ~John
