I think I prefer over the collar because it won't interfere with the break away safety feature of the collar. A tied (knotted) bandana could be caught in something. I know the tied bandanas are easier and faster to make, but please be safe first. Thank you for this video.

you're very welcome. Pre-washing is usually recommended but I'll admit I don't always do it. If you think you will wash these regularly, it will be best to prewash (so it preshrinks). Have fun!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. In addition to learning how to sew a bandana, I also learned about several other helpful things (chain stitching, holding the bobbin thread, heat ink) that I can use on my other beginner projects! I'm bookmarking this so I can refer back to it later.
Very easy tutorial thank you. Just made one for my cat as a test version with a fabric scrap. Will be making some for friends dogs and a Christmas craft fair with my scrap fabric.
My dog goes to a doggy gym every Friday and she loves everyone there. Last year I made leashes for all the pets owned by the staff (about 20). This year I want to do something different and your tutorial is my inspiration for making bandanas. I really appreciate all the detail as you covered things I may not have thought about. Thanks so much.
Tara, I just found your tutorial. For the measurements is it the length of the collar, the measurement around the dogs neck or the width of the collar? I have been asked to make one or two for a friend’s dog, so want to be certain of what I need her to measure. Thank you so much.
It's based on the collar more than the neck but the size square will be bigger for larger dogs so it looks proportionate. The fabric moves on the collar so the neck size isn't the key.
Ah HA!!! The narrow seams set the stage for the collar channel, similar to what we did when making masks (channel on each side for the elastic). I plan on making some for the shelter; they give adopted dogs bandanas when they have them (and if the pup is ok with/it). Thanks for an informative tutorial!! 🐶
Thx very good tutorial.im going to out elastic band on instead of the collar.just in case a another dog wants to grab him by the collar thn it easy slip of his head
Such a great detailed video. Really appreciate you sharing ❤ I have 3 Boxers and I can never find them matching bandanas so Im making them some for Christmas 🎄

I like ties or having a second attachment. My dog got grabbed by a over the collar bandana and almost got choked by another dog. So I like velcro or some other quick release method.
These go over the dog collar so it’s not as important as if it tied. There is a link in the description to my blog post where there’s a chart of the sizes. Have fun!
Some dogs love them, mine came home from the groomers with one on and now doesn't like me taking them off. He's even tried to stand up the table to try to get it back
@@ArtistTaraReed yes he's so funny, he's a cockapoo. I would never imagined putting a bandana on him but I've had to make sure he's always got one now and have had to make them as the ones the groomers send him home with are throwaways
Don’t insult your dog by making it wear a stupid bandana. It’s not a doll but an animal. It serves no purpose and is exploitative, much like putting stupid head bands on tiny babies. Stop dressing it up just so you can feel good about you.
Do you prefer an over the collar dog bandana or one that ties on?

Yikes! That's scary - I'd want a quick release after that too. Hope your dog is ok.
@@ArtistTaraReed could you come up with a pattern for a quick release bandana? I think that would be a great idea!
@@donnabush7938 I just did a quick release lanyard so I have the hooks - will add it to my list!
Hi Tara - I’m a beginner- if adding top stitch all around - would you recommend 1/4 inch seam too?
I would use a 1/4” seam allowance and then topstitch a little less than 1/4” so you catch the seam allowance too. Have fun!
What size neck are the lg,medium and small

If selling at a craft fair how much would charge
That's a great question but I'm not sure! I did a quick search on Etsy and it looks like $8-10 is the most common price.
I don’t understand the obsession of putting bandannas on dogs and dressing them like children! I feel sorry for the dog!
