There are not enough adjectives in any language to describe the brilliant originality of Airto. An original original. I really dig what he does on a kit of drums. Plus all his other stuff. I saw Airto and Alex Acuna on the same band and they swapped seats a number of times. It was wonderful to see.
I'll never forget the first time I heard Airto. It was on Paul Simon's first solo album on a song called "Armistice Day". After that, I started seeing his name crop up more and more as I dug deeper, especially on many CTI releases. He is indispensable when it comes to bringing something magical to a track, and his solo albums are must haves. I adore Airto and his work.
I had the extraordinary great fortune to see Airto and Flora perform in a small bar in Cary, IL in the 1990's. He was no more than 20 feet in front of me ... and the performance made indelible imprint on my brain. What I remember most was a mid-set solo by Airto, center-stage, with NO percussion instruments. He was bare-chested, sweaty, first silent... then started with stomping is feet on the stage... adding slaps to nearly every part of his body that could make a sound. Next, he blended in his vast vocal-percussive repertoire. I would pay any amount ... to have a video of that performance.
