It was my honor to know them personally as their son-in-law. Airto & I had great times. They both reside in Brazil now. I could bore you with stories, but won't. OK, one. They played at our wedding! Great times to be sure.
Recorded in 1985 at Paul Masson Vineyards in Madera, CA, featuring Flora Purim (vocals) Airto Moreira (drums, percussion), Larry Nass (guitar), Keith Jones (bass), Kei Akagi (keyboards), and Laudir D'Oliveira (percussion).

They were my in-laws & I have many stories. My favorite goes like this. Flora rarely cooked, so Airto & I would go to the market, purchase dinner fixings, take them home & lay them on the kitchen counter. Airto would then begin pulling pots & pans, one at a time, & play them like a drum or tamborine. If it didn't have a good sound, it would be put away & out came another until he found the one with sound. He would use that pot or pan to cook with. It always came out delicious. You can't make this stuff up. Today they are both in Brazil.
I saw them around 1976 at "my fathers place" in Roslyn NY of all places. They were great, just great. I felt frustrated though, because it was the WRONG crowd - did not know how to "let go". And so neither could I. But they were still incredible. I would love to see them again.
Love it ,I’ve been listen to Flora since the late 70s.Thank heaven for RUclips now I can see artist I know will never come to my area if they do decide to do a few gigs
I saw Flora and Airto several times around the Bay Area of CA many times in the mid 70's through the mid 80's. The strangest venue I saw them play was at the Saddle Rack in San Jose, (I'm guessing between and including 1983 and 84). which was a country western club, usually packed with fans of the local country bands. This was during the peak of the whole Urban Cowboy thing that was happening at the time. I remember Flora even joked at it from the stage. Certainly not the "normal" atmosphere you'd associate with them. It was a great show of course and they went over very well. I wish there was a recording of that show somewhere.
Recorded in 1985 at Paul Masson Vineyards in Madera, CA, featuring Flora Purim (vocals) Airto Moreira (drums, percussion), Larry Nass (guitar), Keith Jones (bass), Kei Akagi (keyboards), and Laudir D'Oliveira (percussion).
Thanks for the info. I was wondering who the keyboardist was. He may no be Hermeto Pascoal, but he's obviously no slouch either! The who group is impressive, eh?
I first encountered their Art around 1974...I remember Music performed with Chick Correa... Great band! Larry Nass on guitar, Keith Jones on bass, Kai Akage on keyboards, and Laudir D'Oliveira on percussion! YES!!! :-)
Just wanted to add my thanks for uploading this musical jem. I am a lifelong Flora Purim fan but, as you can imagine living in the UK, I have had very little chance to see her and Airto live. But I did have the privilege of catching them at Ronnie Scott's club in the 80's and treasure that memory. I'm also a guitarist and for years have followed and loved all the great sophisticated fusion guys such as Carlton and Ritenour, but must confess to never having heard of Larry Nass until discovering this video. What a beautiful and fiery player, he reminds me of Carlos Rios, another great, and I am so sad to hear of Larry's untimely passing at such a young age. Larry simply burns on this video demonstrating that perfect balance of technical mastery, jazz sophistication, and fiery emotion. Can anyone tell me if he was ever featured on any albums, either solo or as a sideman? Surely he should be regarded up there with the fusion greats based on this evidence! Respect too for the band and Kei in particular, who I had the privilege of seeing with Miles back in the day. Latin music is the rhythm of life - peace all.
Man, coming out of the vamp into the chord changes on the first tune that guitar solo was SMOKIN"!!!! Woot! Great video, I remember seeing this years ago and it's pretty awesome. Great band too.
Thanks, I think I've rediscovered pianist Kei Akagi via this video post. Pretty sure I saw Kei's excellent playing, with Airto, at the now closed venue Concerts by the Sea (Redondo Beach, California). He really made an impression on me that evening.
Thanks for posting this. I remember having it on VHS back in the '80's. If my memory serves me right it was part of a series called 'Harvest Jazz' from a jazzfest at the Paul Masson Vinyards in California. My guess is around 1982. I see the personnel is given further in the comments. If anyone has anything else from this series it would be interesting to see the Sonny Rollins segment where he tried to jump off the stage, broke his leg, and continued playing!! Happy Jazzing folks.
Just makes me want to dance! It reminds me of that jazz club near Lincoln Park that was in the basement and they regularly played Brazilian jazz. I loved it!
Airto is a driving force. Those guys would get lost in their dreams without Airto gently kicking them on the arse. Unbeliavably good musicians by the way. Not just Flora. The istrumentalists are magis.
Me encanta, y a tengo 62.8 años y desde que tengo uso de razón siempre los he seguido, la primera vez que vino a Puerto Rico en el Teatro Tapia, inolvidable......
Fico horrorizado com a mídia calhorda brasileira. The Harvest Jazz series was broadcast on the A&E network in the early-mid '80's. This episode really blew me away, as I had at the time got into the Light as a Feather album and it was so cool to see Airto and Flora perform. Beautiful and timeless music.
I saw them the first time around 1981 in San Diego, at a fancy hotel there. I saw them again at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1985. It was before the big remodel, and they still had grass seating. The warm up band was Hiroshima.
Yeah, Flora looks pretty happy - this was shortly after her release from prison for a narcotics (cocaine) possession in 1974. She spend 1.5 years at the FCI in L.A. But she did concerts on the inside (!) and one was even radio broadcast.
+7777Scion hello ! not really important but just to say that this is a bit later, a concert in 1982, live on Harvest jazz a festival in Canada.. The faces of the musicians , the instruments etc lead me to question the time ... anyway a great performance :)

Tive uma experiência parecida. A primeira vez que ouvi Flora e Airto foi em 1998. Por acaso estava dirigindo em São Francisco e sintonizei, sem querer, o rádio em uma estação que tinha um programa de Jazz/Fusion. Fiquei impressionado! Pena o Brasil não os conhecer.

it would be nice to know when this was. huge Airto fan here. i call billy Cobham the worlds greatest trap set drummer. Airto is the worlds greateste percussionist. The greatest Rhythmatist.
I met your son at Lawai Dicken’s home in Lawai back in 2006. We were looking at seashell collections. Your son didn’t know I came from Detroit where my friends love your music.
One of my favorite Flora and Airto performances ever. Remember too...what awesome collaborators they were...Chick (RTF), Weayher Report, George Duke (Brazilian Love Affair. Someone please remind me the name of the opening song! I knew it once, and I’ve performed it with various bands. Just can’t remember the name.
Loving the pieces written in 7/8 and also how they slip a brief series of measures of 4, 4, 4 & 3 or simply 8 and 7 into the Samba Flora is singing. love Larry's guitar playing and keen awareness of the time signatures being used.
Totally agree with you! Every one of them performs great but Kei is so impressive. His performance in Miles Davis band's Around The World album also knocked me out.
Great band, never seen footage of Airto on the drum kit, thanks for sharing. Third tune is an English lyrics version of Milton Nascimento's classic 'Nada Será Como Antes', from his seminal 1972 album 'Clube da Esquina'.
It was my honor to know them personally as their son-in-law. Airto & I had great times. They both reside in Brazil now. I could bore you with stories, but won't. OK, one. They played at our wedding! Great times to be sure.
Tóp...🎉
Does she offer mentorship
I had the pleasure to play with them in 1982 with my suitcase of crazy percussion. It was a happening. Love these folks.
It must have been amazing
I wish I'd have had the honor to be there .
Nice. I was just thinking how much I wish I were there - maybe sitting on a blanket or a lawn chair - enjoying the fresh air, warmth and great music.
Honra...de ser brasileiro e ouvir Flora&Airton...!!!❤❤❤❤

Great story. Did he keep the ones whose sound he didn't like, or throw them away?
It's artistry !
absolute life changing is how to describe when first discovering music of other worlds such as this
Welcome.
Flora and Airto: great music talents, unfortunately little recognized in Brazil among new generations.
I saw them around 1976 at "my fathers place" in Roslyn NY of all places. They were great, just great. I felt frustrated though, because it was the WRONG crowd - did not know how to "let go". And so neither could I. But they were still incredible. I would love to see them again.

@kiloscott Thanks!
@rev.b, why even compare him to the genius of Hermeto? No one plays or conceives music like Hermeto Pascoal
A Flora é de outro planeta cantora incomparável!

do not forget Airto and Flora Purim! I remember watching this on Australian TV long ago and fell in love with Flora on this performance.
it's an 'ok' band - the great bands were the ones Airto/Flora used on their Seventies albums
AND...... her husband Airto on drums!
Thanks for the line up. Amazing stuff!

One the greatest jazz fusion guitarists the United States ever produced. It's a fucking shame that he died so young at age 47.
@Grace Reyna, one of greatest? I wouldn’t go that far...
Flora and Airto are such amazing talents. Is it any wonder they get gifted musicians around them?!
Man, coming out of the vamp into the chord changes on the first tune that guitar solo was SMOKIN"!!!! Woot! Great video, I remember seeing this years ago and it's pretty awesome. Great band too.
Tive a felicidade de ver os dois num show numa Virada Cultural em Sampa. O show foi inesquecível. Foi bem no Vale do Anhagabaú.
Larry Nass awesome guitar player was leader of R&B Bombers and will never forget him giving newcomers like myself a break forever a Montalvo legend.
Flora has been an influence on my Latin Music understanding and playing since I was 17 in 1974. This is great RIP Larry Nass....

Oh yes, Hiroshima. Used to see them at a tiny club near school, when I attended USC, '74 to '77.
Amazing! Love them! Flora e Airto: vcs são demais! Queridosss! 💎💕💎🙏🏻🙏🏻
Larry Nass guitar R.I.P.

airto toca e ainda abaixa e arruma o banco sem perder o ritmo .
Aside from Flora's great ear and vocal talent, she is also a percussionist in her own right, perfectly holding down her parts on the agogo bells.
Show maravilhoso do eterno Mestre Airto Moreira e da eterna Diva Flora Purim!!!
FLORA PURIM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Linda, maravilhosa. Senhora de todas as canções.
loved their brazillian fusion since the 70s .. which's when this looks like. That 335 sound is sublime .. gr8 fan of 335 for thus kinda jazz-fusion

Every one knows that Airto is a great percussionist--but he has always (since Chick) been one of my fav jazz drummers too.

Mind Blowing!
Loving the pieces written in 7/8 and also how they slip a brief series of measures of 4, 4, 4 & 3 or simply 8 and 7 into the Samba Flora is singing. love Larry's guitar playing and keen awareness of the time signatures being used.
Kei Akagi!!! ~♡•°☆
Exactly! I can't believe he wasn't mentioned in the title.
+arthurthegreat ~ Kei Akari is one of jazz most under appreciated and finest keyboardists. Huge inspiration to me for years
Totally agree with you! Every one of them performs great but Kei is so impressive. His performance in Miles Davis band's Around The World album also knocked me out.
Seen 'em live 3 times, been a fan since 1973!!!
saw Airto's first US concert at Keystone Korner in SF.
thank you ! MAGNIFICENT !
Airto é foda!!!! Brasileiro incrível, músico fantástico!!!

Great band, never seen footage of Airto on the drum kit, thanks for sharing. Third tune is an English lyrics version of Milton Nascimento's classic 'Nada Será Como Antes', from his seminal 1972 album 'Clube da Esquina'.
That's Larry Nass on guitar - passed away in 2000, RIP.
WOW this
Maravilhosa ... Flora Purim fez a mais internacional das carreiras.
Was this the entire performance because I am sure there was a track in which the Oberheim synth was featured?
