The percussionist with him is Ralph McDonald... Also a BEAST. REALLY tasteful guy... never overplays.. really overlooked. And then Steve Gadd.. what can I even say
Steve knows how much to give an how much not to. It keeps everything flowing smooth an groovy. No, and I mean No hot dog-en here. He lets everyone breath.
Gadd is an awesome player. His dynamics are as good as I've seen/heard. I bet if ya had the chance to ask Steve if he "mastered his craft" he would say no way.
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any help you can give me.
The older I've gotten, the more I appreciate the beauty and skill of simply laying "the groove" down. I can still handle the acrobatic solos to a degree, but nothing compares to me anymore than simply mastering a groove so powerful and infectious that you've no other choice but to groove along with it.
Andy Nelson Buddy rich, Charly antolini, Dave weckl, Jojo mayer and you pick Steve gadd as the best drummer... He is awesome, but doesn't have much techincal abilities.
Favorite drummer. I mean Christ, just listen to how massive that silence at 2:42 is! Great musicians know it's just as much about the space as it is about the note.
@@JeffWaldInteresting! yes it totally is a marching cadence which is why I felt suddenly at attention when he plays it haha. Great way to get peoples attention back to a conscious state after such a groovy solo
I've loved listening to, and playing this solo for 35 years. What Dr. Gadd concedes in speed and fireworks to his younger contemporaries he makes up for, and surpasses them in melodious musicality.
He knew how to get a primal thump out of a drum as well as understanding them musically. That's why I love him. He is a consummate musician and a primal wild man beating out a beat to his fellow tribesmen all at once!
Yep, definitely. There's a subtlety to his playing that is often overlooked in amongst the "groove" element. Much more refinement than noticed on the first listen!
The perfect example of Professional musicians, Extremely talented musicians and those who don't think in terms like that at all. They either add to the composition or play nothing. If the whole tune is breathing beautifully then 1 ride bell 'ting' in 3 places may be it. Us normal musicians appreciate it and some may notice that something just seems like its not there yet. The Gadds, Smiths, Porcaro's and the like., instinctively know what's lacking and are able to finish that phrase to where that 'not quite right' is now a whole different pocket.
Gadd did a clinic at The Musician's Institute when I was there in '88. He had a very basic kit and it was all about the 'groove' and how that is the foundation, without a solid groove, all the fills and solos don't mean diddly. It was one of the most educational things I ever saw. Amazing!
I think MI has that posted as a 1989 clinic. I've watched that one many times - amazing. He was on a red Yamaha kit. Look it up and see if thats it or just another amazing clinic
I've got the Grover Washington live at the bijou but Steve gadd not playing drums on their. It's still really good. The vibe& the beat just brilliant....he is the man. Mr. Gadd.
What a Blessing to hear the unified groove of Ralph & Steve... I hear all diverse cultures coming together as one as they groove into bliss rhythm... I feel sanctified and free...
You realize that those are his drums right? I think the old video has a lot to do with the sound of the drums. I agree with you though. He's a freakin natural.
Yes, of course I realize that. I'm sorry, I should have clarified that his sound is unique. He doesn't choke out the drum lugs like a lot of drummers do. He can tune them his way, and sound great..other drummers would sound "flabby" with that tuning, in my opinion.
Speaking of percussion has anyone ever listened to Puente In Percussion which was released in 1956? There you have four of the greatest percussionists in one session. Imo.
Nice to see that Steve hasn't forgotten everything I taught him.....LOL And if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property for sale in Kansas. He is an absolute monster!! Legendary beast.
Those are his legendary K Zildjian hats that he has now retired. You can clearly see damage on the bottom and possibly top cymbals that have been cut to prevent further cracking. They still sound freaking awesome !
Jesus, that snare! I can guarantee, not a SINGLE cat worldwide has that sound today. That's weird to think about. It's just the most perfect, meaty, crisp snare sound you could imagine. Back then, Jeff had that tone as well, but today it's completely gone.
David Norman yep, that's the legend! And it wouldn't surprise me at all. If I'm not mistaken, he was sight reading that chart as well which just adds to the amazement
The percussionist with him is Ralph McDonald... Also a BEAST. REALLY tasteful guy... never overplays.. really overlooked. And then Steve Gadd.. what can I even say
i was going to say this is a DUO groove!
@@missbelled6700 EPIC!
We know Gadd's a god, can we talk about the percussionist whO MADE A COWBELL SOLO COOL
Gabe Figueroa Ralph McDonald -
YESSURR!!
Any time I'm sitting in on a jam session and there's a cowbell, I IMMEDIATELY start ripping off every lick from this solo. No shame here :D
We all need a little more cowbell in our lives
That’s great Ralph Macdonald on percussions
The perfect amount of cowbell
yessy
I'll be honest, it was sounding great but... I could've used a little more cowbell.
more cowbell!
No, MORE COWBELL
I have a fever
Gotta give it to the crowd. The sound of those snares with claps on top is majestic
Steve Gadd feels it. He's one of the best ever, along with Jeff Porcaro - they can make anything sound good.
absolutely
Don't forget Billy Cobham
EPIC!
Gadd tells that watch what time it is.
God dammit I love watching people that have mastered their craft
Steve knows how much to give an how much not to. It keeps everything flowing smooth an groovy. No, and I mean No hot dog-en here. He lets everyone breath.
something about it is special
Gadd is an awesome player. His dynamics are as good as I've seen/heard. I bet if ya had the chance to ask Steve if he "mastered his craft" he would say no way.

@Gus Carmelo instablaster :)
SOOOO much passion in his playing.... You can tell playing is his true love....
Absolutely!
EPIC!

this is one of my favorites. its just perfect
Love this comment Steve. I feel the same way about my playing. The more I progress, the more I just want to sit back and lay down a solid groove.
Well said Steve! It's been my life long journey as a musician to stay in this realm
EPIC!
And The Gaddmyster can do that better than anyone!!!!!!
Steve Gadd with Ralph Macdonald percussionist extraordinaire
After listening and practicing to every famous drummer, I come to the same conclusion, Steve Gadd is is the best drummer I have ever heard
Yes sir, I have to agree!
Andy Nelson Buddy rich, Charly antolini, Dave weckl, Jojo mayer and you pick Steve gadd as the best drummer... He is awesome, but doesn't have much techincal abilities.
He may not be as technical as the other aforementioned drummers, but his pocket engulfs all the others combined.
He has a lot of sensibility, but Steve Smith and Omar Hakim are not bad either
I can't stand Weckl, demo guy, simple and soulful is the key, groove is the key
Amazing STEVE GADD since STEELY DAN'S years!!!! so proud to follow him forever!!!!..........
Steve's shirt needs to be re-issued by Yamaha!
Fuck yeah!
EtobiQue.. But not in green,pls!!
Get it tattooed
Favorite drummer. I mean Christ, just listen to how massive that silence at 2:42 is! Great musicians know it's just as much about the space as it is about the note.
Isn't that killer? I love how he uses space like that
EPIC!
Love how Steve Gadd moves around in the seat with the rhythm. He’s always done that.
its like he's dancing while he's playing, which I'd say he is!
the simple but banger fill he plays to go back into the song at 3:41 gets me so stoked to groove out
absolutely! its a marching cadence but on the kit and its basically him saying, "I'm done" 😎
@@JeffWaldInteresting! yes it totally is a marching cadence which is why I felt suddenly at attention when he plays it haha. Great way to get peoples attention back to a conscious state after such a groovy solo
@@urielseptim9860 Its cool b/c he's used it alot over the years. I remember hearing it somewhere else and I was like "hey!! that's the cadence!"
I am watching this for the past 45 years and it never gets old! Pure Geniuses!
me too, me too... perfection
I've loved listening to, and playing this solo for 35 years. What Dr. Gadd concedes in speed and fireworks to his younger contemporaries he makes up for, and surpasses them in melodious musicality.
Totally concur!
Weckl and Harrison are right there with him in musicality.
EPIC!
Steve Gadd is a genius. There; I said it. And he's playing a cracked crash cymbal here.
I think he's playing 3 cracked cymbals , including the bottom hat
I thought he hit a mic!
The groove master. God I wish I knew what groove truly was years ago.
EPIC!
It’s perfect for the gig. It’s not too washy but it’s cracked enough to be dry.
Steve's Groove is out of this world.
this is one of the solos i came here to see over n over again for years
very musical
i feel like dancing whenever i listen
EPIC!
By far my favourite Gadd solo vid I've seen... Just incredible how he was vibing with the percussionist. GADDDDDDDDD!!!!
The Power and the Glory, The Great Steve Gadd and the Percussion Phenom, Ralph McDonald!
A super clean drum solo that makes sense
Pretty sure that was the most epic cowbell solo of all times.
I love how his phrasing is so crisp especially with that dry , punchy Gadd sound!! Gorgeous!! What a master player!! 👌🏻😎
He knew how to get a primal thump out of a drum as well as understanding them musically. That's why I love him. He is a consummate musician and a primal wild man beating out a beat to his fellow tribesmen all at once!
Steve is like a modern day Buddy Rich always insyn with his beats and runs. He has played with Grover Washington RIP on different gigs
When it moves you to tears, it’s Gadd..
Wow! the power.. the feel...such a legend..
Yep, definitely. There's a subtlety to his playing that is often overlooked in amongst the "groove" element. Much more refinement than noticed on the first listen!
Steve Gadd is a tremendous all-around player. He is a fine reader too. He can swing and play Jazz as well. He and Steve Smith are two of my favorites.
4 minutes of pure bliss.
exactly!
EPIC!
The conga player knows his craft and Mr.
Gadd keeps up, never loosing the deep groove feel. Well done guys.
yeah, they totally killed this one. one of my favorites
Playing hand drums with a talented drummer is bliss.
they were such a great team
trained in the USA Band...awesome drummer & Ralph Mc Donald...cool cat....WOW
Music heroes from another time; Steve Gadd & Ralph McDonald !!! (and Eric Gale! in the band too)
doesn't matter what they do, grooves like a boss

indeed, its awesome! I loved them on "One trick pony" of Paul Simon.
this is incredible.....SO much groove its just melting my face away UGH!!
haha, i've always loved this. 1980!
Oh...
So THAT'S how you play drums.
Got it.
Economy of motion perfectionist.
That is just so beautifully played. So smooth and controlled but just oozing feel.
yes sir. One of my favorite solo/duets of his

Steve is the Groove Machine
Just beastly! I remember watching that concert on HBO 1980. 🔥
that's killer. I remember a drummer friend showing me this around 85 and i was blown away
WOW amazing GADD once again laying it down,,,,
The great Steve Gadd! I remember watching this concert as a kid...phenomenal!
A friend showed it to me in 85 or so - was blown away~!
Gadd did a clinic at The Musician's Institute when I was there in '88. He had a very basic kit and it was all about the 'groove' and how that is the foundation, without a solid groove, all the fills and solos don't mean diddly. It was one of the most educational things I ever saw. Amazing!

One of the great drum solos of my life.
Ralph MacDonald-percussionist, And The Composer of "Mister Magic".
His album, The Path, is beyond wonderful.
Hr also wrote Where is the love.
One of the most groovy his solo I've ever heard!!!! Really love it! Thank you for posting!

His phrasing is just so musical
It ALL fits so nicely together.
EPIC!
Anyone who works with Grover Cleveland JR is fantastic
I've got the Grover Washington live at the bijou but Steve gadd not playing drums on their. It's still really good. The vibe& the beat just brilliant....he is the man. Mr. Gadd.
Secret to drum soloing.
Sing it to song in your head.it makes it so much more musical.
What a Blessing to hear the unified groove of Ralph & Steve... I hear all diverse cultures coming together as one as they groove into bliss rhythm... I feel sanctified and free...
those two were an amazing team
I'm convinced that Steve could play on anyone's drums and make them sound the best. He can play on those "dry-sounding" skins and it sounds great!
+Nacho Man Randy Sandwich I totally agree brother!
You realize that those are his drums right? I think the old video has a lot to do with the sound of the drums. I agree with you though. He's a freakin natural.

Nacho Man Randy Sandwich I hear ya.
bro those beats and grooves are unreal. forget chops and fills man this dude makes u wanna dance
Yep! THIS is a drum solo!
Loving the percussion break💯❤️💯
Speaking of percussion has anyone ever listened to Puente In Percussion which was released in 1956? There you have four of the greatest percussionists in one session. Imo.
Now THATS a groove!
More cowbell, we need more cowbell.
this is the power of percussion and rythm section right there
one of my favorites!
Gadd drums solo are like voices , and it breath litterally freely with a lot of pause and a wonderfull spacing mastering....if u know what i mean
Those sticks are like tree trunks. Amazing!
Steve Gadd's musicality is unmatched...of course!
That's how its done! Period! Steve Gadd forever
That was a real treat. Nice footage. Thanks.
I feel fortunate tom have seen this--my life is now complete
Its a great one
My favorite
Gadd is a classic jazz player with a little Buddy Rich in his playing
Nice to see that Steve hasn't forgotten everything I taught him.....LOL
And if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property for sale in Kansas. He is an absolute monster!! Legendary beast.
Drum master at work with a percussionist professor!!
that is the best cowbell solo that exists.
Those are his legendary K Zildjian hats that he has now retired. You can clearly see damage on the bottom and possibly top cymbals that have been cut to prevent further cracking.
They still sound freaking awesome !
Having worked on FOH sound for this gentleman. “Simplicity, keep the beat. If ya can’t keep the beat....” love this video....
Wow, you have?! That's a rare privilege
One word- SOLID 👍
37 years ago! Wow....
Gadd is timeless
The drum meister and craftsman Steve Gadd
Nobody has said it yet ? Ok.. I'll say it then.. MORE COWBELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus, that snare! I can guarantee, not a SINGLE cat worldwide has that sound today. That's weird to think about. It's just the most perfect, meaty, crisp snare sound you could imagine. Back then, Jeff had that tone as well, but today it's completely gone.
Ralph McDonald....soooo coool...main man....
Class👍
Timeless 😮
The goodness flows.
more cowbell!!!
Anybody notice that all of the cymbals were cracked and thrashed? Gadd is always awesome, even on thrashed gear.
Crazy 8s Drums I've noticed that. I think it has a purpose thats why it has a crack. Even Gadd's cowbell sounds like cracked. :D
Awesome!!
Thanks for posting this. The grooves are amazing
So groovy
such a sick drum sound
It really is! For as dead sounding as they are, he makes them sound amazing
Excellent drummer.
The best IMHO
Happy Birthday to Steve Gadd - the World’s Best Drummer (my honest opinion). My Tribute to Steve Gadd on his 69th Birthday.
JAZZMUSIC! DRUMMERS! LIKE (SG)! ARE "THE BEST DRUMMERS" IN THE WORLD! AND "OF ALL TIME" ANYWAY!
Truth!!
Brilliant ! If i recall correctly his solo on steely dan track aja was one take!
David Norman yep, that's the legend! And it wouldn't surprise me at all. If I'm not mistaken, he was sight reading that chart as well which just adds to the amazement
Jeff Wald The other players were so amazed they couldn't play they were dumbstruck by his playing!
And that is why he is the greatest drummer alive
The drum performance heard on Aja is actually two takes spliced together. This is a common myth. Still incredible of course.
Gadd is just so distinct.
Absolutely!
I need more cow bell
Jeff this is awesome any more re the video looks like an awesome gig.
it is, you can probably find it all on youtube. grover washington jr live - oct 7, 1980
Gadd has soul.
🎶😍¡outstanding!😍🎶
Sounds like just another PROFESSIONAL drummer.
Yeah, the kid might make it at this drumming thing 😅
Ralph MacDonald from the LA Express line-up? I recall a live album with these two belting-out some awesome grooves.
Two Masters
EPIC!
You can tell they rehearsed this! Gadd is still my favorite pro drummer.
Me too! Everything sounds so good, even when he's playing on old cracked cymbals and the drums so dead sounding
Each phrase is Gadddddddd!!!!!
Steve Gadd - no surprise at all. But the bongo man is epic as well. Percussion with cowbells - that's the deal!
That 50 ways tease at 2:04 👌
cowbell solo. wow
