I was singing A Love Supreme throughout this solo, it's a first time I hear a drummer playing a melody and then solo over it creating all dynamic music pulses and nuances as if he's playing with a full band. He's a real virtuoso.
This has to be the most MUSICAL solo I've ever heard. He is literally TALKING through the kit, which is why i love his playing so much. He was even doing this with Miles back in the day, he just perfected it. Alot to learn here
It's all about composing and musicality not rudiments which should serve the music not the other way round, Jack is the ultimate musical drummer a joy to behold.
I've drummed my whole life 67 years old. From North Chicago. Jack DeJohnett. Aghhhhhhh please. He's Savant. A Living Legend and BOSS. One of Steve Smith's favorites. Mine too.
He is whole band by himself. I met him years ago at a life changing clinic. He spent a lot of time talking about aliens and American Indians. It got way out there. His solos first on piano then drums was truly from the stars. Nobody plays like Jack. Wow!
I think at this point Jack DeJohnette has earned his status as a drumming legend. He can "say" as much or as little as he wants; he's pretty much revered. While he has primarily played traditional in his career, I've seen people's comments on this video saying that he had hand problems and switched to mainly match grip.
One of the best improvised drum solos for me. sometimes it’s not just about playing faster than the other guys.... It’s how you tell a story and how you construct something that would sound like one complete thought from beginning to end.
I have no clue how anyone who claims to know anything about music can just come out and admit how stupidly blind they are to the absolute majesty of this drum solo.
Respect Jack De Johnette in so many many ways. An expressive musician Taste and Story Telling in a Melodic Fashion. Also I must give credit and I know that Jack will agree. The man who really put the butter on the popcorn and vanilla ice cream on the apple pie., The one The only Late MAX ROACH. Dizzy called Max the Painter,. His spectrum of melodic drumming. Jack De Johnette does so many great fabulous happenings for percussion. He drumming is like listening to a phrase of tonal percussion. Nice drumming and absolutely musical from the word go. No fast chops needed here. This is a Musical Drum Solo
7 people didn't realize they were watching the greatest living drummer( considering the amount of albums, tours, shows, and clinics, here and around the world he's done since 1960)... Can anyone match his out put? Drumming is about expressing something, not just playing fast. He can play extremely fast, too. Mind-boggling phrases, not just basic stuff played fast, like some rock drummers, that some think are sooo great. It makes me wonder how many people commenting are actual drummers!!!!????
Touring rock drummer here, yes he's pretty fucking amazing, its sad to see that people can't appreciate this, his dynamic and his melodic approach to soloing is really great to watch
"Drumming is more than speed" - This is exactly what Jack has demonstrated. It is a musical playing. @sdsdsdsdsnhgvjshfvjs nailed it when he said A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. That's what he's playing! You can hear the song as he plays it. Every note he plays is so relaxed, and I feel that's appropriate when you listen to the lyrics of that song - they're kinda laid back. At the same time, he has a commanding control over the tempo. That's what I get out of this type of playing.
The Best Percussionist in the Universe! For Sure! Seen in Montreal Jazz Fest whith Pat Metheny...many years ago I Remember!!! What a Concert! OOOOOOOOOOOOUF!
There is so much in it! He tells Stories. Here it is Not about Look how fast am i or that Kind of Sport drumming! It is just another Way like "Old School"
any one else hear "a love supreme"? (apparently I am not the only one) its pretty interesting reading his book (the art of modern jazz drumming) and watching this video. at 4:25 or so he starts doing some of the 3 over 4 stuff he introduces in the first section of the book
So Proud of my Cousin Jack DeJohnette, many blessings to you always. Your Chicago Family.
this is awesome........I'm also Hyde Park!
Dude do you realize your cousin is a living legend
I am a student at the Culinary Institute of America and just got to shake this man's hand as he came through the campus bookstore. Best day ever.
Got to love a drummer who starts a solo quoting A Love Surpreme!
Gregory Bramhall that's right! I was coming to the comments to mention that as well!

A great, great musician.
nice to hear someone actually playing a musical instrument instead of been obsessed with playing as fast as they possibly can ....lovely
I ve heard hundrets of drum solos, this is among the best.
The most musical drum solo of all time. Jack plays drums like the piano.
Absolutely!!!
Jack has beautiful melodic symmetry in his playing. You can tell that he spent many hours alone exploring his "voice".
A Love Supreme musically referenced ...then onto more melodic drumming. He is playing songs, not solos. Beautiful.
► Eleni Eliadeb : C'est exactement ça...

Saw him locally at a music store and did a solo. After 45 minutes we said "seen enough - let's go. God knows how much longer this will go on."
Pure joy. Like water.

He plays with a lot of feel
Wow...sounds like the motif in A Love Supreme
No mutes, high tuning, nice.
I understand why JD is one of Bill Stewart’s favorite drummers
They're the Aquarian Jack DeJohnette Signature Heads.
Jack has nice texture feel he uses the hats nicely
loose phrasing is great. Peter Erskine is great at that as well
There is so much in it! He tells Stories. Here it is Not about Look how fast am i or that Kind of Sport drumming! It is just another Way like "Old School"
Legend, what else can you say?
