Btw, actual anime fight (Naruto vs Pain) was animated by young (at that time) animator Shingo Yamashita, who was only 22 and solo animated 7 minutes (!!!) of the episode by himself, which is, considering how insane that ep is - is so unbelievably impressive. Now he is one of the most respected animators and directors of anime industry - he directed multiple openings, such as JJK season 1 (both ops), Ranking of Kings OP2 etc. Probably great topic for another video if you haven't talked about him already.
As always, I love your insightful analysis. Loved the details in this animation and the overall continuity and intent on every frame, what a talented guy. Great video, thank you Howard!
Are we talking about the Shingo Yamashita Pain episode here? That one clears the fan animation easily, and we're talking about a TV anime with tight deadlines btw. I get you're just trying to do a title that'll make people click but still..
that's weird contrast right? the sense of weight and timing is great , but the actual character drawing is weirdly naive? I think I've never seen a 2D animator who's this great at animating, while being kinda bad at the drawing part of the process. Like it makes sense to simplify the designs to focus on fluid movement, but most animators at this insane level tend to give more polish to character's shape, even when they are very simple (that he seems to have improved a ton on since, looking at samples of their most recent work at the beginning of the video that have more consistent anatomy and sense of volume).
Fan animators can take as long as they want on projects that are a minute long total. They're not beholden to the same system of being underpaid and overworked. Shingo Yamashita is a legend though so this is a weird comparison.

When the fan animator has no deadline and can take all the time in the world, has great animation but bad art and only animates a small portion.
