All these cuts fall within the Kanada school of animation (named after Kanada Yoshinori, arguably the most influential and important Japanese animator) with Imaishi Hiroyuki of course being the most prominent modern Kanada follower (maybe Kameda Yoshimichi as well). The extreme poses, characteristic perspectives, action lines, very dynamic and unpredictable frame modulation and even characteristic shapes in the effects animations are all unmistakably of that lineage of japanese animation. Im sure you are aware of the terminology but its worth noting since i didnt see it mentioned
Even coming up with these poses and perspectives is a creative achievement, let alone timing and drawing them. The appreciation and excitement is infectious. great breakdown man, we are so back!
Honestly, seeing these FLCL sequences frame-by-frame is inspiring in a way I wasn't expecting; very strongly in the previous vid (although still present in this one a fair amount) I keep seeing elements of the unique, way-off-model, angular smear-poses that remind me actually a lot of how my own stuff looks in the sketchy/gestural stages. Obviously I'm nowhere near this level of animation skill (especially in my general timing control), but seeing something so familiar worked so well into the final piece of such legendary animation is oddly reassuring for my hope of being able to someday get my own work really polished without losing that particular sense of loose energy and motion that I'm actually quite proud of, but still have a hard time keeping intact through later drafts (sort of the animation version of the classic "Lineart making the pose look stiff" problem I suppose; which, to be fair, I also struggle with in my more 'static' work, like comics). So yeah, apparently FLCL is going in my list of study/reference mainstays for the future.
I love the FLCL animation. I have the Groundworks/behind the scenes Art Book. Some amazing poses in there. Especially when the robot is coming out of the kid’s head! 😅
feel like with daicon iv and flcl the only way its made is when all the upcoming and current legends get together to just do a passion project to completely show off while paying ohmage to everything that inspired and made them who they are in a omega level piece of anime.
I feel like you should play the clip at normal speed BEFORE the frame-by-frame, so we can have better context for what it is we're actuallynseeing breakdowns of. Very good video, nonetheless.
I really want to do this, However I'm struggling with drawing anatomy, creating a story and starting my senior year as a teenager. Is there a way to balance out what I want to study for what I'm interested in doing? Maybe I could go on hiatus on my story but that's merely a fraction of my problems
the original FLCL is truly something to behold.
Flcl is an animation gold mine

It's amazing to see that you can use so little to no inbetween frames to make yet such impactful movements
I just remembered that this whole scene is a reference from lupin the 3rd. Specifically the first op (I think) imashi is a big fan of lupin

What really had me in stitches was when they switched to the style of South Park. It just comes out of nowhere and you can't help but laugh.
More flcl analysis pls ❤
I thought the frames would stop surprising me as you went on but it just kept on going 😂
Great content man! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Such a great scene to choose cuz on top of the FlCl animation they're referencing a bunch of Lupin iii poses and movements!

Can analysis the thief and the cobbler? I love the animation in that unfinished movie. Mainly the recobble version.
