Mario Sprites and Models are Goofy

- In this video, we look through the history of Mario's appearances in each of his mainline games, to find out how many resemble the guy we're all familiar with, and how many look like skinwalker versions of him.
I forgor to say in the video, but imo the weirdest mario is from sm64, and the most normal-looking ones are from Galaxy and the NSMB series.

Fun fact: the reason Mario seems so short in Galaxy is because they crunched him down slightly so that his hitbox could be condensed into a sphere (since, due to the gravity mechanics, he'd be rotating every which way, and a circular hitbox results in fewer chances for weirdness).
That's also the same reason why in Sonic the Hedgehog, he is curled up into a ball during the special stages.
Very neat! Spheres are a natural at not caring about rotation.
They never went back to his old form after Galaxy, he became way rounder after that game

tbh i love mario 64 mario. he's like a slightly more chibified goofy little guy. yet a high-maintenance pet you have to constantly keep an eye on to make sure he doesn't mess up your house
Reminds me of that one video of cats messing around but with Mario 64 sound effects.
SM64 Mario is like Peter Griffin; No matter what craziest, wackiest stuff he would do, he wouldn't look out of place doing it and we would all enjoy watching him do it.
When SM64 Mario misses a jump his blank expression always speaks volumes
yeahas
I love SM64 Mario precisely because he looks so stupid. Especially the lower poly version that appears if the camera is far away
444444444
Isn’t it weird how the sm64ds Mario model is lower than the low poly sm64 mario model but it looks better?
Yep
@@newsuperbowserworld Pretty sure it's because of the textures.
@@flameofthephoenix8395 the sm64ds Mario is just a lower quality double dash model
SM64 Mario being described as "He's ready for a school field trip" is such a good way to describe how i feel about him
he's so goofy and he looks like a mischievous entity i would find in the woods.
Couple this with the File Select song, he genuinely feels like a gnarly little imp you'd find in the woods.
Mario 64 Mario looks like a little woodland creature that likes to go in dumpsters to eat moldy cornbread
HE DOES
Just a silly little creature. :D
yeah.
Just a silly guy.
i take offence but mario 64 mario isn't my favorite
I like Mario Odyssey's Mario. It's like an animated movie, cartoony and detailed.
Thank you! I wholeheartedly agree!
Ikr in odyssey all the character models where done well, it’s the movie version of Mario the screwed them over.
@@Equalizer2922how, they’re now rendered at cinematic quality they’ve never been better textured, sure I prefer the mainline designs everyday but it’s nice to see them rendered so good
Good video, the only problem is the fact that SM64 Mario is currently outside my house trying to BLJ through my window and OH NO HE'S IN HERE
Quick make a circle of salt around you, salt is his weakness
Just offer him a glass of milk and he'll be on his way
@@user-jl7cz2pe6dI understood that reference
@@fryingpansam I wouldn’t see Lou Albano Mario as the negative stereotype Mario that everybody talks about, as Lou Albano, like Charles Martinet, gave Mario a fun cheerful tone, along with an adventurous heart; Walker Boone Mario, on the other hand… definitely sounded more like the negative stereotype as shown on 0:54, 11:24 (as Vinny was mimicking Walker Boone’s Mario than Lou Albano’s).
Also, in NSMB2, Mario gets chubbier when grabbing the Super Leaf, as a way of harking back to his 2D art design, especially the Mario art shown in Menko cards, which could be an inspiration for DiC’s design of Mario in the cartoons.
Offer him Taco Bell!
The main reason Super Mario Advance 1 and 2 Mario have bright, pale colors is because the GBA screen was quite dim, so they wanted the ingame graphics to be as easy to see on such dim screen as possible, which is ironic, since a lamp was needed to see the GBA screen
exactly what i was thinking
"this isn't Mario, this is a smoker" is the funniest shit I've heard this year so far
i think the reason sm64 feels so goofy is that he's literally constantly cross-eyed lmaoooo
SMG4 reference
sm64 mario would be even more beautiful if he didnt have the same dead pan stare 24/7
Sm64 Mario blinks and if he waits too long he sleeps so no
taking away his deadpan stare would be removing his soul. taking away those parallel and curious eyes would take away his charm
But he blinks...
Tbh, sm64DS Mario model is a improvement
Omg so real, @@fishstickfailur3, hes adorable!!!!
Everyone is taking this video so seriously, this is just poking fun at those sprites and nothing else, this video was pretty fun to watch, thx :3
I agree with you at 5:11, this is toddler Mario. Mario says he wants to show me something cool, I watch and he just jumps and does a spin. He also looks like he’s going to ask me what games are on my phone, or maybe like he is about to say “Can you play toys with me”
Ok but you cant say no because hes ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!1!1!11!1!!11

awesome video :]
SM64 Mario has a charming look, doesn't even look the same character and that's funny and cool to me. Awesome video!
Mario world mario is PEAK IMO
I remember playing a flash game with the mario world mario sprite where you run around with a shotgun killing all the enemies from mario world. Badass stuff I swear.
galaxy mario dislocates his shoulders each time he turns his head
For the NES, each sprite only had four colors to work with - and if you wanted transparency, that ate up one of your precious color slots. That's why the colors seem "off" for SMB2 and SMB3. (The white of the yes for the SMB2 sprite was done by layering a *second* sprite over it.)
And as for the Advance sprites, the reason they're so bright and washed out is due to the original GBA lacking a backlight - so games were made with significantly brighter pallets to compensate.
@@epicredhot5675And then there's SMA4, which didn't have to have brighter colors as the GBA SP was already out by then.
yes
yeah and super mario bros didnt have any enhancements too i think so there mightve been some kinda color limitation that made them use green for mario idk?
Fun Fact: Mario _was_ originally intended to have blue be the secondary colour instead of green-brown in SMB1's development, but at some point they changed it, probably because the blue kinda blended in with the daytime overworld and underwater levels
source?
SMG4
The Super Mario Advance 2 sprite isn't _more_ saturated, it's _desaturated_ - the saturation is lower, making it paler instead of brighter. Lighter and brighter aren't the same thing, especially in the digital art world.
This was of course an attempt to account for the GBA's lack of backlighting, to make him light enough to see when an external light is being shone onto the screen.
Yeah was thinking the same thing! They followed his instructions and made it less saturated!
Smg4 does not help how unserious 64 bit Mario is
This man’s is the follow up to powerful killer sprite of World/Land 2 and it makes the transition even funnier
wait, is that why smg4 mario looks so goofy?
I actually really like this video alot, because its nice to see someone point out the old and new sprites like this! As well as your humor, editing, and commentary. You are SERIOUSLY underrated!
i like SMW's beta Small Mario sprite, mostly because he looks like a cube.
It's the same sprite that is present on world map in the final version of Super Mario World.
seeing “bad mario” again brought me 1 billion memories damn
(also hotel mario gameplay sprite is goated)🔥🔥🔥🔥
As someone who does really enjoy the Mario 3 sprite, I couldn't help but laugh when you said "Let's go over the positives. The tone of red looks better," and then immediately stopped talking.
I think my favorite sprite is Mario 2, actually. It's wild how close they nailed it on their second try, and it's got that round jolly man energy I want from my Mario. Colors are a little off, but that's due to NES palette restrictions, so I won't hold it against them.
About the ds game, he's actually a 3D model
Well I think every body knows that, but it's hard to tell because it's too fvcking pixelated.
@@wanderinggamer8290 he showed that it isnt in emu with a higher res although thats mario vs i think not the actual game. idk why most people capturing ds games run at native but dont for other consoles like i feel like ds games almost always look better at a high resolution
Same model from 64 DS I believe
The reason the SMA SMW sprite is so saturated is because the old GBA didn’t have backlights. Being overly saturated kinda helped with the lack of a backlight.
SM64 Mario looks like a whimsical forest creature. I'd let him eat birdseed off my hand.
I was hoping you would bring up the skidding sprite from the first Super Mario Bros. Now THAT'S a weird sprite. It looks so much more detailed and... muscular... than every other sprite.
2:13 each sprite is limited to only 3 colors on the nes, they couldnt have added a fourth color for his buttons!!!
We know but still
SMB2 Mario:
...It very much was possible, just with some bypasses and layering trickery.
@@jeannesery9936 I didn't.
For me, SMW’s SMALL Mario is the weirdest, but not because he’s the strangest or the most unique like SMB Mario is.
Something about his small form radiates “that one kid who got lost on the field trip and is now stuck for the night” energy. Like he’s silently saying “Where’s my mommy” under his breath. Little man just has zero brain cells.
I know your talking about main line mario games but you can't forget about the mario & luigi sprites along with their 3D models! the sprites from the 3DS look so good and the models of them for the giant fights are amazing as well, honestly my favorite look for mario along with wonder
This is probably because I'm a SM64 Machinamist, but SM64 Mario is my favourite, on top. And then there's SMB3, 2 and 1, ones I like because of the style.
"This is not Mario. This is a smoker." lmfao
Mario in NSMB is a full 3D model. That's why A: he moves fluently. And B: completely clear from compression when exported. It's just the DS being weird when 3D models are rendered.
I honestly love smb 1 and 3’s Mario sprites, and I’ll explain why.
1: Mario is so simplistic, and even with his big sprite, he just looks like a silly little guy. The small Mario sprite is very iconic, and it makes sense because it looks like what it’s supposed to look like; a human, and it doesn’t look severely deformed or anything.
3: ok, the black overalls were honestly a good design choice for this game. It just makes Mario more unique in this game and not like the other games. Also, the no legs makes it look better and more… cute? to me.
READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING
Ok so this video is blowing up, so I want to say a few things that are leading people to misunderstanding the point of this video:
1. I am aware *why* these sprites look the way they do. I said at the beginning that hardware limitations led to some interesting sprites. But I’m making fun of them anyways because they look silly regardless. Not trying to say they could do better despite the old hardware.
2. Some of yall are taking this way too seriously. This video was meant to be fun, I’m not actually hating on any of these sprites, I actually love the weirder ones. I thought it was a popular joke that mario sprites looked funny but I guess I’m wrong. So please enjoy the video and don’t take everything I say seriously.
But anyways, on a lighter note, thanks for getting me to 300 subscribers! I want to plan something special but idk what yet
Our pleasure and congratulations! 👍🏻
You forgot Super mario 64 ds, He has a diffrent model
Ommenters havent heard about cybershell
correction: 617, but now 618 since im subbing
You when has weird design and was a creature mario from mario 64
The community: IS THAT STANLEY FROM MARIO 64 CLASSIFIELD?????!!!!!!!!!
SMW mario the type of person to kick a poison mushroom on your mouth while you are trying to be a news reporter
I feel like you missed some huge points by not talking about spinoffs, guest appearances in other games, and lower poly versions of in game models. Talking about low poly Mario 64 Mario, early Mario Party Marios, and Brawl Mario seems like they’d all be very in line, and it’s honestly jaw-dropping that you made a weird Marios video without even mentioning Mario Teaches Typing.
Also imo, the Odyssey model is really good, at least in the renders. It does a nice job of making him look *detailed* without trying to make him look *realistic*, therefore preserving his cartoony form whilst still keeping his level of detail in line with the world around him. That game was made to look beautiful and detailed, and I couldn’t really imagine a lower detail model like 3D World running around in the blacktop and brick buildings of New Donk. At least they didn’t give him individual teeth like Luigi got in some Luigi’s Mansion 3 renders.
Mario and Luigi look fine with individual teeth. Quit complaining. 😑
In the movie, they had individual teeth.
Bro really saw tan/olive skin and said "diseased"
i just realized if you look at the smb3 sprite too long it looks like mario’s moustache is a goofy smile
5:31 now that you mention Mario sprites looking like they have huge thighs, I can't unsee it from that one
Now the weirdest Luigi Sprites/Models
I'd say this is more of an "evolution of mario's look" than going over weird/obscure sprites but regardless i enjoyed this vid a lot. nice c:
When I saw nsmb Mario at such high resolution I let out a good long wheeze that sounded like I had a respiratory problem
SM64, Sunshine, And Galaxy + Wonder Are All my Favorite Marios
i think the original mario sprite looks the funniest because his head is facing the side, but his body is facing frontwards
The Mario Advance ones are bright because the original Gameboy Advanced had poor screen lighting I think but it didn't have that problem for the SP gameboy so they didn't light them up for Advance 4
smb64's mario "sprite" has butt segments, for some reason, and it makes me laugh every time i see it
that part about the sprite animations is so true lol i can never look at his smw sprite the same
the description of like everything is so awesome. i love the crunchyass 'M' on sm64 mario's hat
7:02 He is, in fact, a 3D model, but isn't a sprite. The DS resolution did him dirty.
Hey, if Power Star and Super Bad Mario are anything to go off of, SMW Mario is peak menace. And I have a thing for menacing models, so that's a win for me.
I remember seeing a post somewhere saying that the marketing and in game SM64 Mario’s a different characters, the marketing is just Mario but in game is, as the post says, “a curious animal, like a deer”, and I feel like that sums him up pretty well
The reason Mario is so washed out in the early advance games was to account for the fact that the original game boy advance didn’t have a backlit screen, so they made the colors less saturated to make it easier to see in darker lighting environments, the reason advance 4 doesn’t do this is because the game boy advance sp had just released, which did have a backlit screen.
SM64 Mario is so cute, hell you mean?
SM64 Mario to me is so funny because he doesn’t have emotions. So like when he’s hit by a goomba, he quite literally has the same dead pan stare every time.
The thing with New Super Mario Bros. is that Mario IS actually rendered as a 3D model at all times; there are multiple points in the game where Mario is spinning around and it probably wouldn’t look as smooth if he were just a sprite.
5:59 I didn't even think about it, you just had to brought it up
0:52 Was one of the segments of all time ngl.
my guy not every sprite had free reign
the old consoles had limitations
No shit bro he knows that, it doesn't change shit
fyi: The Advance 1 and 2 sprites are brighter to get around the issue of the original Gameboy Advance lacking a backlight.
Super Mario Land Mario feels like he came straight out of the Twilight Zone.
comment section taking this video way too seriously lol
I should have done an hour analysis on the brilliant masterpiece that is the Mario Bros 3 Sprite
Erm, actually, the gameboy advance had a darker screen and making the sprites lighter made seeing them easier. This was unnecessary for the game boy advance sp with the brighter screen but the game was realeased before that came out. Also, for the Nintendo Entertainment System, they only had 3 colors to work with, making things look awkward and strange. You could do research and make a better video. Be ashamed. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 (this comments a joke)
The internet has forever changed how I think of the SMW and 64 Mario’s.
I’m not mad but I blame GameMaster and SMG4 for that.
i find it kinda weird how you can see mario's other shoe kinda sticking behind like he's doing a sonic pose or smth in the smb2 sprite
i have no nostalgia attached to it cause i was literally born in 2004, but i always loved mario 64 mario
he just looks so silly and doinky, he is very cute imo, i kind of enjoy the exaggerated goofy artstyle over the more.. realistic- ish modern mario design
10:21
YIPPEE! XD god damn it i love that sound
Honestly I think GameCube Mario looks much more menacing than SMW or anything else, his eyebrows are so damn angry
well, no jokes now, seeing them outside of being in game and when they are most away from the screen, they're are really weird, not bad, but it's looks different from what Mario was supposed to be, that gives a different style that playing on game it's gives a great vibe because of everything into it, like background and animations, but seeing the sprites separately of everything gives a kinda felling of "that's different!".
… no _Donkey Kong_ or _Mario Bros?_ Why not?
I once had a dream of SM64 Mario chasing me around a dark abandoned library, so, that model low key scares me. U just have to really imagine it to understand. That specific model...in a dark environment...running straight for u. You'd be scared, too.
I believe the mario galaxy mario model had to be shrinked so he would better fit his spherical hitbox, since he would be running out in every direction, a sphere being uniform would help a lot with that.
Idk if that's true but im 99% sure that the hitbox in that game is spherical, so it would make sense.
SMG4 certainly didn't help in me viewing SM64's Mario model as just HILARIOUS!
Most of the issues with earlier games are basically due to hardware limitations
Fun fact: NSMB Mario uses the exact same model throughout the ENTIRETY of the series. Which is in turn, the same exact model as 64DS
SM64 and World are my favorite, And i find the smb1 all stars sprite off feeling, prob due to me growing up with super mario flash before all stars so it feels like its a flash game sprite more than super nintendo, also the gba sprites are overly saturated due to the GBA's screeen (not the sp or ds)
Haha, yeah, Mario flash moment.
Back when most of my exposure to Mario came from Flash games, I used to call the SMW sprite the "violent Mario" because he was the one always used in violent games. I remember two of them in particular, one was a shooter game that featured SMW Mario with an assault rifle, and the other one was an autoscroller featuring SMW Mario with a shotgun.
10:28 Don't worry, front-facing SMB1 mario isn't real.
front-facing SMB1 mario:
*deathstare* :]
The use of the Super Mario Maker 2 sprite for Super Mario Bros. 2 Mario annoyed my autistic mind more than it should have.
NSMB Mario *is* actually a model, most people cut him out of screenshots from the game being emulated to make "sprites" of him due to the game's small resolution and lack of anti-aliasing.
In my mind SM64 Mario is just... His own character, seperate from the usual Mario.
He just has this unique energy to him, this lil goober gremblin gopling vibe to him that the more modern mario is missing (no way weegee reference)
Despite the internet ruining SMW, it’s my favorite sprite of Mario, I just love the palette they chose for Mario in this game. It’s so out of place and appealing to me plus Mario World is my favorite Mario game so it’s a 10/10 in my book
SM64 Mario is the only Mario who looks like I could have him as a pet.
I feel like this is such an elephant in the room when it comes to the franchise (no pun intended)
The Super Mario Brothers Wonder Mario model which is broken inside of Blender. The end!
First person I've ever actually seen actually rate the Mario sprites instead of other ones or the game.
64 Mario is basically just a sewer rat you found one day, eating your stale popcorn.
Idk how this is click bait to people this is funny and uh... the old ones are a little weird like scary weird
Super Mario Bros 1 Mario: Middle-aged smoker
Super Mario Bros 2 Mario: Blueberry boy
Super Mario Bros 3 Mario: Blackberry starer
Super Mario Land 1 Mario: Macroscopic organism
Super Mario World Mario: Menace to society (alternate title: Sociopath)
Super Mario All-Stars (SMB1) Mario: Middle-aged smoker's grandson
Super Mario All-Stars (SMB3) Mario: Blackberry starer with a new paintjob
Super Mario Land 2 Mario: Gremlin boy
Super Mario 64 Mario: Lovable school fieldtrip goober
I'm just going to end it here because I think these are the most interesting to talk about.
M64 Mario is what I imagine parents see when their kids wake them up at 3 am bc they threw up
fun fact: the reason the early super mario advance games look generally bright is cause it was made that way to be seen easier on a gameboy screen. now this feature doesnt do anything for the game boy advance sp cause it has a backlight
sm64 mario is so goofy looking i don't even see him as mario, he's just a creature to me
SMW Mario is my favorite Mario sprite, he just looks nice
One of the iconic mario sprites used all the years in flash/sprite animations we all grew up watching like the m&lss sprites
oh yes, he didn't talk about the SM64DS model (precisely the one they also used for NSMB without pixelation)
SMW is the best Mario sprite, you can't change my mind--
Wait, why do I hear the gateway to the firey pits if agony?
10:21 wait till you see the mario from the front view
7:01 actually, not true. He's a 3d model and looks like that because of the resolution
