How Many Ports of Super Mario Bros. (1985) Exist? - Super Mario Bros. Release History

- There are few video games as well known and beloved as Super Mario Bros. Not only did it change the history of video games forever, it spawned the entire Super Mario franchise that is still going strong to this day. As one of the most popular and important games of all time, it's also one of the most rereleased. Since its release in 1985, the game has been available on countless devices, officially and unofficially. Today, we'll be taking a look at them!
Super Mario Bros. has been released and remade no fewer than 30 times including releases for the NES, the Famicom Disk System, PCs, the GameBoy Color/Advance, the Wii, and more! It's also seen various retoolings such as one based off of a Japanese radio show and some arcade editions as well! Along with that, there are even many bootleg and unlicensed ports of the game, such as Sonic Jam 6 for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive! If any of this sounds interesting, learn all about those and more rereleases of Super Mario Bros. in this video!
If you enjoyed this video, be sure to subscribe and check out my other videos! Thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoyed!

I will never forget my mom's description of the game to a toystore clerk. When I turned 6 I got the game for my birthday, but because my mother didn't trust herself to get the right game, she took me to the store and check what to buy. Neither of us knew the game's title because she didn't know anything about games and I couldn't read yet. So my mom asked if they have the "jumpy guy's game" and the clerk immediately knowing what we meant. I don't know why, but it's one of those random memories that stuck. ^^'
That's pretty sweet!
"jumpy guy game" is the only way i'm gonna call super mario bros from now on

Great story :)
I mean...his nickname _is_ Jumpman.
Deluxe was a pretty neat port that added tons of extra content, even though the Game Boy screen made it harder to see what was ahead of you.
To compensate for that they changed the physics so you could have more control of your movement after jumps. No one ever mentions that but I swear it's true.
Smb dx was probably my favorite port simply due to the few extras they included (ghost race, etc)

Being a flash game that is a faithful recreation of Super Mario Bros with multiple playable characters from other series that keep their original gameplay style and are changed slightly to fit the Mario universe.

Consoles being more powerful than PCs oh how things have changed.
IIRC it wasn't really that they were more powerful, but that they had hardware specialized for games that weren't really found in home computers. In terms of raw CPU power, AFAIK home computers were king but that didn't mean much due to having to do everything in software; slowing everything down.
The Amiga actually had hardware designed for games to take advantage of, and that computer was where computer gaming was *at* until IBM-compatibles caught up.

The Red Wii that came with the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. was also released in New Zealand, not just Japan. My aunt had a copy of that specific Wii, it came bundled with that version plus a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. From my memory the version of the game was the exact same as you mentioned, just the number 25 replacing the ? on the ? Blocks.

The Mario games weren't really on "PC," at least not the IBM standard that we would come to generically know as the PC. They were on two Japanese made home computer platforms, the Sharp X1 and NEC's PC-8800 series. Also it's not really accurate to say that the NES was more powerful than these more expensive machines, they just had different purposes and design priorities. The NES hardware was custom made to affordably display graphics quickly and used a lot of clever tricks and shortcuts to do that. The home computers were made to, well, compute and when it came to pushing graphics they had to do everything the hard way which they didn't have the processing power to do at that time.
Great video, this game has such a fun history.
You're getting Sony's PlayStation re-release and Nintendo's Virtual Console confused. Nintendo altered many games on Wii VC, including changing advertisements in Wave Race 64 to show Wii and DS ads instead of expired/outdated Kawasaki ads. Pokemon Snap had the Photo Channel work with it like Blockbuster. Most games had alterations to enhance visuals and stability, such as playing at 480p.
Imagine they released Super Mario All-Stars + World + 64 + Sunshine + Galaxy + Galaxy 2 + Odyssey on the Switch for Mario's 30th Anniversary!
With 3D upscaled graphics and orchestral music for everything!
The footage of the All Stars version you're using is a modded version. In the original All Stars version, Mario was more floaty when he bit blocks.

Anyone heard of Super Luigi Brothers?
Evidently it somewhere that one exists I played it once on something probably Windows weird consoles that are sold at Christmas.
Curtis Ward that one also had the Atari version of Mario Brothers not super of course.
Oh and yeah there was a bootleg for the Atari as well that was actually on the cartridge cease and desist of course was Nintendo's response.
However speaking of Atari.
Atari had at one time released versions of their 2600 games.
For IBM PC and XT not sure if it was both but I think it was.
Also I don't know what version it was but I know it was not Super Mario Brothers special for sure.
Had this before I actually got the Nintendo!
But it was a IBM doors version of Super Mario Brothers.
It was fairly faithful to the original Super Mario Bros.
It was played by a keyboard though!
Think I got it for either Christmas or birthday 1 year???
But don't remember the title but it looks nothing like Super Mario special which I have played before somewhere somehow.
Don't know if it wasn't official release or not but from what I've heard from others there was a Dos Port of the game.
Again I don't know if Listen official one or not but possibly????
Also interesting enough there is something interesting in Windows I don't know if this is some sort of add-on or what or Easter egg I can't remember long time!
It wasn't really a game say but you could be Mario and jumping around your desktop screen in Windows don't remember which version of Windows it was.
3.1 or later???
There were a few questions boxes and sausage or variant of.
With the Vine that's the one I really remember!
Also there was one of those self-contained plug-and-play systems I had once.
There was actually a version of Super Mario Bros on there.
Seem like combination of different versions mainly Super Mario Brothers 2 Super Mario Bros 1 and one more plus some parts that were never in a Mario Brothers game.
Also there is a few enemies that were not in Mario Brothers games.
But look very very close to Pokemon at least a few of them!
Has anyone ever heard about the telenet Star Wars movie in ASCII characters thought I threw out that
@@aaronbrandenburg2441 The only Super Luigi Bros I know is the minigame that came with NES Remix 2 on the Wii U. It's the original Smb but all the levels are backwards and you play as Luigi.
There's one more you missed. There was a version of the Game & Watch one that was released on the Wrist Watch lineup. Weirdly enough, some of these do not use the regular "Bros." abbreviation, calling them by their entire name, Super Mario Brothers. (Source: ruclips.net/video/uKxRglFVPqY/видео.html )

Christ, it’s annoying. Didn’t even make it to the two-minute mark. Have Americans always called it that, I wonder? In the UK, at least when the original games were out, it was always BROTHERS.
@DoggoCatto Yes, in the written form, it can be abbreviated that way. But I had never known it to be verbalised in the shortened form, and certainly not in terms of Mario games. As another example, one doesn't pronounce 'Mr.' as it is written. It is still 'mister'.

@@craigdrever6334 the Americans I know say "brothers" even if it's abbreviated in writing
Note that the GBA version was actually slightly modified due to differences in the aspect ratio of the GBA and NES; Mario's sprite (and maybe some others) was actually redrawn to make it fit better, which might make it seem off if you're really familiar with the original. Nintendrew had a video all about the GBA-NES ports, I would recommend looking at that for the specifics.
Oh yeah I saw a Scott the Woz episode about that
I know I know, but I gotta be *that guy* so here goes, Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) took levels from Vs. Super Mario Bros. because Vs. SMB finished development before SMB2J, even though Vs. SMB came out 11 days after in Japan. (Vs. SMB came out 6/14/86, SMB2J came out 6/3/86) Sorry for having to be the nitpicky guy, great video, and I love this style, because it's nice to just watch in general. Much love, keep going man!
It's much more likely that they just codeveloped the games. They came out at pretty much exactly the same time as you said, and was therefore very likely developed at the same time. Therefore they didn't take any levels from the other game, they designed both games to share the same levels.

Left one is translated like "Mario 3: Around the World" (probably, that was an adventure with a view to find some vodka) and the right one is translated like "Mario 4: Space Odyssey" (of course, after drinking vodka you may fell like in space and you may not remember where you are so you're going to have an epic odyssey)
You're gonna need vodka if you decide to play those
and a will of STEEL. i have been there....
And it's NOT pretty.
Yeah the Game Overs for Mario 4: Space Odyssey were creepy. There was one for basically every situation.
RIGHT WHEN THE VIDEO COMES OUT SQUAD WHERE YOU AT?!?!?!?!?
here
@@landrypierre4890 YEAH!!!!!!!!!
How could you actually not mention the c64 port, it was almost an exact pixel perfect port done by 1 person, a billion times more interesting than sonic 6.
Somari a Sonic game with Mario on NES
Sonic Jam 6 a Mario game with Sonic on the Genesis
It has come full circle
Maybe in the future you could give a final count for the total number of ports, or keep a counter at the corner of the screen. That would better answer the titles of these videos, I think. In any case, super interesting and informative, thanks for making this!
I know Zelda would probably be the next logical one, but I'm curious about Kirby, or Pokemon ports, or even the original Pheonix Wright since I just started playing it, how many ports of those exist
Poppun Presents Pokemon ports:
Game Boy
3DS
that’s it.
I always found it annoying that Nintendo would allow Hudson Soft to make a version of the first Super Mario Bros game, but when pitched a version of Mario 3 that is on par with the NES release, they want to treat us Americans like we’re inferior beings and lie about not being interested in bringing games outside their own system. 😤
19:44 Mario: What neck?
23:33 oh! It's a pegasus! That waa pretty much the polish equivalent of the nes and i live in poland! I was not expecting to see that!
Ah, the part where you discuss Vs. Super Mario Bros. brings back memories for me. There is this brewery/pizza place my family sometimes goes to in San Clemente, and they have a tiny arcade there. It's mostly unremarkable stuff, but as late as 2013/2014, they had a Vs. Super Mario Bros. cabinet there, and I remember playing it years ago. Sadly, it must've broken at some point, because I recently found out they replaced it with a tabletop Pac-Man machine. Fairly interesting, but it's still no Vs. Super Mario Bros. :-(
25:54 Mario 3: Around the World
for kids older than 6 years
looks like they haven't got a game over yet
@Figger Naggot 420 The game over screen is some stolen gory Mario fan art
I just discovered this channel yesterday. Great videos so far!! The only thing I would suggest is possibly a counter on the screen to answer how many versions you cover of each game. Again great job, I'm quickly becoming addicted to these
As an Asian grew up playing all the games directly imported from japan, it is so interesting to see how Western gamer view those facts that seem to be so common during my childhood. Japan is definitely forging the gaming history in a unprecedented way.
I hear you. I grew up in the US but we imported a Super Famicom when we visited the homeland 😂
24:53 wide sonic
I was literally JUST playing SMB1
Good for you Shark Eat Fish!
It is still played regularly around the world
Super Monkey Ball 1
@ ?
He forgot the Atari version 🕹
That's a port of the Mario Bros. Arcade game not Super Mario Bros.
The Pasta Salt You’ll have to excuse my kid (who posted that). He’s 10. But we appreciate the correction!
There was actually a Super Mario Bros port for the Atari 2600 called Princess rescue. The game isn't official and looks quite terrible, but the console's limitations are to blame. It was pulled off the shelves once someone at Nintendo found out about it.
@@Spamlum the same creator also made Zippy the Porcupine which was quite ambitious for an Atari 2600 game
