This is the best informative video I have watched in a long time. Most people don't make good teachers of concepts they understand well. This was well worth the 15 mins.
You’re the teacher every student dreams of having to teach any subject, wow!! That was a great basic course in the fundamentals of when to use 4H + 4L. I get it. Thank you very much!
I just bought my 2014 GX 460 with 97k miles on it a little over a year ago. It was well maintained and has been a fantastic SUV so far! I've been so busy with work though this last year that I have never had a chance yet to really take it off-road like I want too. I'm in the midwest, specifically the "St. Louis, MO area" . We use to get quite a bit of snow here every winter back in the day but nowadays we get very little during the winter.......The little snow we got this last winter and me only taking the GX on one small trip last summer meant I never needed to put it in actual "4-Low or Lock The Center Diff". The all time 4WD has served me well when I have needed extra traction thus far. This coming summer however me and my girlfriend plan on taking a big trip out west in the GX. Then this next winter we will probably go snowboarding out in Colorado as well as we didn't go at all in the 2023 season. Therfore, My question is, is it bad for the mechanical parts and for lubrication reasons not to "Actually Put It In 4-Low Or Lock The Center Diff"? I mean should I at least put it those modes and drive it off road just a little every month or so just to keep the parts in good standing or? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question as I'm not a mechanic but am really curious about this. I have never put it in either of those modes or used them so I don't want anything to be seized up when I go to try an actually use it. The ole statement "use it or lose it" hopefully doesnt apply here or I am screwed, Lol.
The actuator shafts and forks are within a lubricated environment. Might be a good idea to actuate them once a year or so if you're worried... but no evidence that they cease up with disuse... just anecdotes
Maaan!!!! THANK YOU! You should be in education, phenomenal break down of the high and low gear. I just purchased 2015 GX 460 after trading in a 2018 Camry LE, it was too low to the ground to step in and out off. GX460 is my dream suv and I got a great deal. However I didn’t know much about the high and low gears. Much appreciated 🎉
Excellent explanation. I will bookmark this video. Although, my GX is a garage queen, you never know when this info will come in useful. Thank you , again.
I did some milder trails at a Toyota Jamboree in East Texas a few years ago in my GX. ‘14 model. I basically used 4H all the way, even up steep grades. I have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you so much for your time and knowledge of these tanks. Subscribing.
My friend is trying to convince me to go. I have a new '23 GX on stock suspensions and tire/wheels. I did add full skid plates and plan to add rock sliders. From your experience would I be able to take on the first two diamond trails at the Toyota Jamboree?
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD sorry for the confusion I was asking @thomasrutledge2743 if my setup would be fine since he said he’s been to the Jamboree a few years ago. If I end up going I definitely will share with you my experience. Great channel and love you dropping knowledge for us GX owners!
Great explanations and examples! I was off-roading recently in a sandy area using 4HI and the road suddenly started going straight up a rock surface. I ended up turning around but I want to go back and try it with 4LO!
Good video but you missed something crucial. On the GX platform 4wheel high uses the Trac system. 4wheel low turns on Atrac. An exception being if it has the MTS option. Atrac is vastly superior to the Trac system in four-wheel high.
@@dinhthanhvan6822 use 4H with S-Mode to control the shifts if you are toeing on road and it's a flat road. If you are towing on crazy steep hills (like in sf) use 4L... but remember tour max speed in 4L D will be like 40mph or so... watch our video on s-mode ❤️
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD This is something I've seen mixed info on as well. If stuck in sand (beach), dig out and then rock back and forth to harden the area, but using 4LO or 4HI? There is mixed advice... Maybe it doesn't matter a whole lot at that point. Also, I'm thinking maybe at that point VSC/TRAC/ATRAC on would be help to prevent wheel spin if you've got say two max tracts behind two wheels and want to grab them....

How much lighter does your car get at 60 mph ?
Fantastic video!
Gotta ask, are you wearing women’s nylon stockings underneath shorts?
I was wondering the same thing. Hell....Joe Namath wore Panty Hose in a 1974 commercial for Hanes Beautymist.

How do you approach a steep slope descending on asphalt with a part time 4 wd vehicle ?
So 4 high is good for snow and ice?
yes 😃

Is it okay to used H4 on heavy rain or ice roads ?
yes! try this:

I guess going up a steep muddy hill 4 hi would be better? And tackling hilly terrain filled with rocks and mud 4lo would be suitable?
When changing from 4H to 4L or the other way does the vehicle have to be at Park or Neutral? Thanks
neutral to take all load off the gears/drivetrain

Good info I needed this. Question? Is keeping the truck in N neutral is a bad idea? Instead of 4H or 4L
I’ve driving the 4x4 in neutral
Does that apply for wet muddy or snowy uphill as well? We should stay at 4H and lock the differential only?
Can you elaborate at bit?? Thank you

Would 4H be used for loose sand beach driving?
best for loose sand is to air down to lengthen the tread contact area. 😃

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD ok cool thanks. I mean I’m in Illinois so we don’t have mountains that I can think of
Can I keep the GX in 2nd gear start at all times or will this hurt the trans?
no, 2nd start is one time only button....

No once you engage the 2nd gear via your system, it will stay there. The second gear only serves for faster acceleration. Maybe useful in the city
