BEGINNERS READ: Best DIY balayage video on yourself I have seen so far! I have been watching hair videos for a long time... but typically the DIY videos done by amateurs are the worst videos to watch before you start to color your hair! My best advice is to actually watch as many professionals do a balayage or a highlight or a baby light as much as possible before you try it on yourself… You’re gonna learn so much more than watching some other amateurs do DIY.
But this video is great and she clearly used to work at Sally so I would consider her more of a professional which is why her video is so good!
I actually did my first balayage with Clairol balayage highlight powder but I did purchase another packet for the next time I do my balayage highlights of the Wella balayage powder.
For those of you that are newbies… You need to stick with the balayage highlighter instead of bleach… You will get beautiful Caramell colors which is a great starter highlight so that you don’t end up over bleaching and having such a major contrast when you are doing this for the first time. Later, as you get the technique down.
Then you should start experimenting with bleach to get highlights that might lift more… Or…
You could still continue to use a balayage highlighter over your old highlights in order to achieve more lift over time.
Do you think semipermanent color would work for this?
Well I am really LATE to the party but so glad I found your tutorial. I am 61, have medium length dark blonde and some professionally provided streaky highlights. But I followed your instructions and my hair now looks better than it has coming out of the salon. Finished off with Wella Toners T18 and T27.mixed half and half . My husband is so impressed ! Thanks so much
I just tried your technique & my hair came out awesome!!! Thank you! This was a great tutorial!
I've watched alot of videos on balayage, they were good, they were helpful. But non of them were ones that made me actually say okay, yes I am doing this. But yours did, not only because you did a great job and made it look so easy but because you've used the wella clay lightener which Is what I've got and made me feel confident enough to want to use it. So thank you. Your hair looks great.
I’m super tempted to do this. I have gone to so many hair dressers over the years trying to get this look and for whatever reason they just can’t seem to get it right. 🤷♀️
I know.. Unfortunately it can be REALLY hit or miss. I love this option because it's so DIY friendly!!
ScoutsNails same! I recently got it done and I legit got streaks! I’m going to start doing it on my own
I just did exactly what she did and got great results!
Yall!! I really really want to try this!! I am scared but I have been watching these videos A lot, I feel like I'm ready! Let me know what yall decide!
I'm doing mine soon. Wella is super safe and these randomness is great.
I’m not sure I would ever trust myself to do my own balayage, but yours looks absolutely beautiful!
Thank you for this! I messaged a hair stylist to ask her a question about balayage because I want to do it on myself and she was very snobby and said that it’s better to not do it at all if I plan on doing it myself since I can’t afford a stylist to do it. 😒 This gives me more confidence in doing it! Thank you!
Imagine someone coming to you and asking for free advice when you invested at least 17k and so many hours into your trade. It's like going to an electrician and asking how to do it yourself. We all need to save money right now but that's their livelihood, and that is what tutorials are for.
I love and appreciate how you explain and guide the process and discuss the products and what they do. You’re awesome!
This is BY FAR thee best tutuorial I've seen for the look I'm going for! The outcome you got was better than salon quality🙌 Kudos to you girl! I wanna do this but I've NEVER dyed my hair & never by myself. You make it look so easy😊 Stunning Results!❤
FoxyyLadyy25 2 it looks easy but if u never messed w bleach better b careful I’m not scare to mess w bleach but I do have to bleach it twice before getting a lighter color n that can b a Challenge for someone who has never done it before!
Do a strand test if your scared guys.. I'm getting this stuff and doing this lol..
This is the best DIY Balayage video I have seen! 😍🙌🏻 looks absolutely beautiful!
This turned out so perfectly, looks great!
Thank you so much! It's so hard to find a good stylist, so I have learned to do my own hair. Someone did a balayage on me and teased my hair into a bunch of knots in the process. It took so long for him to get the knots out. I am now ready for lighter sections but decided I will do it myself. I used to be a blond and did my own highlights. This seems really easy and the Wella lightening you mentioned seems less harsh and easier to use. I'm running to Sally's now. LOL
This is, by far, the best balayage video I've seen yet, and I've watched a LOT of them. Actually, this is just the best hair coloring video I've seen period. There are so many out there where the person says they don't know what they're doing and they're going to see how it turns out. Now, why would I want to try something when someone says that. Yours, on the other hand, was very helpful because it's clear that you know what you're doing, and you make it easy to understand. Thanks for a great video! My hair is shoulder length, but I'm going to give this a go now that I've found your video.
It looks FANTASTIC!!
Thank you so much Carolyn!!! 💖💖💖
I saw this at Sally’s but I didn’t know anything about it so I didn’t want to buy it yet before research, and this video was PERFECT! This is exactly what I’m looking for, thank you for the information and the tutorial. I love love love the end result 💖
You're a fantastic teacher! 💖
You make this look so easy and tempting because the end results are just ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!
Awesome tutorial thank you! I just did one piece of my using your technique and it turned out great. I’m going to tweak my toner colour a bit and do my whole head soon :)
Omg I absolutely love it. I need to try this 😍😍 Love you girl💖 Sending hugs from Tennessee ❤ ✨ ❤ ✨ ALWAYS
This is the best DIY technic i ever see...take some tool but you are in perfect control on your application.
This looks AHHH-MAZING!! 😍 You did a fantastic job!
It looks so good!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
THIS CAME OUT SO GOOD! Exactly the video I was looking for!
Khardellen Hi! I want to do this but i have no experience. Would it be something i could probably manage?
Going to try this soon! love the turn out👍😁
I did this and followed your video and it turned out great!!! Thank you!
I never saw this video when you originally posted it and right now this is exactly what I was looking for! After work today I'm going to Sally's I hope they carry this product still! I have very dark brown hair and I'm looking to lighten it up probably not even as late as you did your ends but just like that little kiss a color to give it a little dimension this tutorial was awesome ❤️
super helpful video! The best one I could find on the wella balayage powder!! I have dark brown asian hair and have previously (lightly) bleached it at a salon about three times. Love the outcome but I haven't gone back in over a year and I wanted to bring up the brightness enough to use an overtone semi-temporary coloring conditioner for the summer! Since I'm not looking for drastic I think you've convinced me to use the wella system!! Thanks!
Love this video!! Thank you!!
Looks so good!
Thanks!! I've been wanting to try this, I've seen the clay lightner and was wondering about that. Not using foils is definitely easier.
Ughhhhhhh your highlights are so 😍😍 I really need to get mine done
Thank you so much!! I'm loving this hair color rn!! 😍😍😍
Makeup is flawless🤗💄
Amazing video to show each step!
Great job beautiful ❤️ aw your little dog 🐕 is so cute ❤️

Thank you so much Melissa!! 💖 I love how they turned out too!
Love it!
ok, once you said, " use a clean brush and blend like an eye shadow", you really got me!!! Hair color, don't know much about it, makeup, now that's a different story : ) : ) Thank you for explaining that way!! Now I understand it!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!
Love this!!! You hair look gorgeous can't wait for the Halloween videos🎃👻💀
Lilgabby92 thank you so much!! Today’s Halloween video will be live at 4:00pm central time today!! 💗
Awesome.... Thanxu it's really helpful video....... Once again thanks a lot dear
Amazing I love it 😍 ❤️
Thank you so much!! 😍😍😍
This was soooo helpful thankyou
looks so good!!! i wish i was brave enough to try this lol
It seems WAYYY scarier than it actually is! This bleach was so gentle on my hair!! 😍🙌🏼
thanks for the tips! this is why I love balayage-I am not good at the precision highlights require. i love the randomness and liberty balayage gives. thanks for the suggestions for the balayage board…foils are so hard to use when I DIY
Love! I’m inspired
💖💖💖
You're so beautiful. This color pops.
Great video but I would have liked to see how and what you use for the toner
Typically when you’re using the balayage lightener instead of bleach… You don’t need toner!
In fact you don’t always need a toner when you are lightening your hair… This is why going to a salon can take a very long time because they are looking at the color of your hair in between each process and sometimes the only way to see what your hair actually looks like is when they blow dry it out because wet hair appears darker.
Because the balayage lightener is a different than regular bleach you’re going to get more caramel colored highlights from virgin hair.
I actually made the mistake of using a balayage lightener and before really looking at my hair I actually apply to toner over and I’m now trying to get the toner out of my hair.
I was wondering the same thing. She linked the toner in the description box www.sallybeauty.com/just-ask-sally/sally-favorites/color-charm-medium-beige-blonde-toner/SBS-800286.html
How do you apply toner?
salllys ! okay girl you came full circle.
Right?! I was having a MOMENT!!
love your eyebrows!!😍❤ tfs... as others commented, I also asked for these soft caramel bayalage look and ended up with platinum blonde streaks😭
Truly the best tutorial I've watched on this topic. What volume developer did you use? 10 or 20?
Thanks a million ❤️
Gorgeous...
You are very talented!🤗 I can barely curl the back of my hair 🤪
best tutorial out there!
You just saved my life! I had to cancel my $300 hair appointment do to finances but now I can just do it myself! ♥️♥️🙏🏼
You should do a white backdrop it will bring out the hair color more 🤙🏻
Omg I freaking LOVE ITTTTT I MEED TO TRY IT
lol i swear every hairstylist calls the front hairs the “money pieces”
I love the result can I use hair coloring with 20 volume developer only on virgin dark brown hair ???
Amazing i like it too much
Love it
Hi there! so when do we use the toner? in this video, it shows 1 and 2 were applied to achieve balyage.
Hello Kait, could you please kindly do a hair tutorial on how you curl your hair. It looks amazing❤️✨
I’m going to buy this NOW! I have natural red hair but it’s gone a closer shade to brown with a little red but I wonder what toner you think I should use? Also where did you get that balayage board you used to paint on? Do they sell it at Sally’s?
I just tried this and toned it the color you did! I love love this bleach! I’ve tried different once’s from sally but the wella bleach lifted evenly for me ! I love it!
Isn't it amazing?! I'm so glad you had great results too. I agree, this is one of the more even lifts I've gotten when doing highlights at home!! 💖 Thanks so much for watching!! xo
Hi From where to bought
this product?
Health and info sam Sally’s Beauty Supply
You are cool and honest !! Very nice !! Sweet girl
Thax i think i can do it i just got the products too
Cute dog ❤️
I have a side part, do I go through these same steps with my hair parted as is?
omg that turqoise on u!!!!
Very Nice 👍 ✨💚✨
I know I'm late to the show here but GREAT video!!
Quick question.... total newbie. How light do you make your hair? Like how do you know when yo wash it off? Also when I'm paying the t27 do you put it only on the highlighted areas or all over your head? Thank you!!!
So I went to Sally's and got mystic divine in light Ash blonde and 20 developer...however my hair did not lighten up to a caramel color that I was aiming for. I'm closer to a medium/dark brown. Level 3/4
Would it bead usable to try vol. 30 developer next time?
Hi! Did you use the same developer for the toner? 😊
Thank you! I'm goin For it! Lol I figure worse case scenario I can always put red over it if I fail lol. Wish me luck!
Loving_Lioness tell us how it goes!
So if I'm understanding you correctly, this Wello product enabled you to not worry about the top bleached layers, bleaching the layers that they touched or that were beneath them. I would've love to see how you use that "board" in the back. Thanks for sharing your process. I'm educating myself in this by watching many videos, I think, before it's all over.
😍😍😍
What developer level do you mix with toner ? How long do you leave it for ?
Will this work okay with a highlighting cap? Also what can I put on my greys? I have a feeling my greys are going to turn red. Have dark brown hair and it tends to pull reds anyway. 🤦🏽♀️
I love the color of your hair!!!!. I always want that caramely blond like. And every time I get my hair done they leave me with red caramel. 🤦🏽♀️ So I want to try it myself. Thanks for sharing!!!! I’m in love with your hair!!
Do you use shampoo and conditioner after toner?is the toner used for the entire head of hair?
What color was your hair when you washed the clay lightner out? Are those your natural roots or they have dye over them?
hi there. :) i’m trying to get a more silver/ash balayage. would this technique work for that and would i have to bleach it twice? i really don’t want any orange or red tones in my hair lol 😂. the last time i tried to bleach and tone it, my hair turned green. i’m guessing my hair was too yellow when i toned it but i’m not sure. also would you recommend any toners or dyes for silver hair? thanks!!
You got it right girl
LOOOVVVVEEEEE
💗💗💗
Hi! I am planning on trying this technique! If I want a lighter blonde, can I just leave the toner on longer? Or should I get a different toner altogether?
How do you use the toner?
my hair is dark brown almost black, what color would you suggest to lighten the roots as well?
thank you
Can i ask something? Your hair already have previous lightener before, if i never have one, how long should i leave lightener? thanks
After the bleach, what shampoo did you use?
And the toner should be right after the shampoo with the hair wet?
Hey did you mix the powder, developer and toner together?
I want my roots darker I have Medium brown natural hair. Should I put the dark brown on my hair first?
Beautiful Hair!! I'm a vlogger from the UK and Love Halloween! #HayleysHelp xx
What do you mix with the toner ?
What level developer did you mix the toner with. I've tried the 5vol and it still lifts my roots.
I have black hair. And want to do what you did. Do I use same toner?
Your hair looks great! Did you apply the toner to all of your hair or just selected parts?
I applied it on all of my hair! :)
How pretty! So is there any easy way to do just overall highlights or lighten hair that you know of?
Lindsay Larson for overall lightening, I’ve done cap highlights myself before. Other than that, I really would recommend just finding a good hairstylist. If you’re going to be working with ALL of your hair, you definitely want to make sure it’s going to remain healthy. You can do an insane amount of damage to your own hair if you just bleach your whole head or something like that.. trust me, I’ve been there LOL!! It didn’t end up pretty 🙈
Kait Nichole I know right? I can’t imagine just bleaching my whole head that thought to me seems really scary lol! I just want to lighten it overall but I think maybe doing highlights once a month or every few months might just be the way to do that. I don’t want the whole thing just blonde I just want to overall lighten it a bit. But I don’t want to shock and damage my hair. Thanks for that! Maybe I’ll do a cap 🙂
just wondering, did you color every piece or did you skip some chunks of hair as you went along?
What color toner did you use , your hair came out ♥️♥️♥️❤️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
im a new sub:)
Hello I had a question I had a bayalage done almost a year ago and I have like medium brown hair naturally. My balayage was a ash blonde. So I wanted to try it myself since I have long hair and can't afford going to salon right now. I was wondering if I do like a t11 or t18 on all my hair including roots will it really change the root color ? I don't want it to look super platnium but some ashy
How do you put the toner? I just bought everything but I don’t know how to use the toner 😱
