Ashley Brooke If your hair ever gets too light for your liking again, try a Color Touch toner from Sally's by Wella. Any blue violet color in a level 8-10 (10.12 is most popular shade) will neutralize brass for longer than the conditioner did and shade it down slightly for you. Demi-permanent will hydrate the hair more after lightening so look for that. Only an extra 8 dollars 👍🏽
Jai Rolka hi I'm a hairdresser too but I haven't worked in salon yet because of my small daughter , how would u say u learned most of the chemical techniques ? Classes? On ur own ? Or salon experience
Sign up for any class you can get to. Keep watching videos. Dig out your mannequins from school and experiment with techniques you're interested in perfecting. Personally, I felt like I didn't learn enough about modern color technique in beauty school. I was too busy with my student clientele, which was mainly mature women who wanted root retouches/perms/wash&sets etc. Lots of all-over coloring, color corrections, and tons of high-lights, though. Still, I feel like you- color is my passion and I want to learn more. I want to learn the cutting-edge techniques. I only did 2 balayages in school- can you imagine?!?! Find a salon that values continuing education. I'm about to start at a very prestigious salon in my area (they go work Fashion Week every year!). They won't pay me much at first, but I know the value of what I'll learn from experienced people.
After watching this, I went out and bought the same dye and tried this... I've never done this to myself, but after washing and drying my hair I have to say I'd recommend doing this even if you're skeptical! I followed the video exactly, and honestly, I would say it looks just as good as going to a salon!
Dear Ashley, thank you so much, I'm a jobless girl, studying and I wanted to try something to make a little difference in my frustrating and depressive life! You really helped me, that too, all for free! I'm sending my true love and blessings directly from India! 😘💕❤️
You did a great job, one thing that might help you next time: That is bleach, and if it dries out completely, it will deactivate it or at least slow it down. If you lay down some saran wrap (I know, sounds weird), between each section you drop down, it'll help keep it wet when you apply heat. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, so I'm supposed to tell you not to do this at all by yourself, but you didn't do anything wrong and you have a good eye for placement and sectioning.
I was actually planning on highlighting my hair today and wanted to see how others do it. I was just gonna use a cap, then came across this balayage and your video. I LOVE this. You explained it so great and I love that you showed us how to actually do it. It looks so good. I never heard of this before. And I plan on doing this instead!! Thank you!
THANK YOU!! I'm trying to save money at the moment, so I've been scouring RUclips & the internet for weeks, in search for the perfect DIY balayage tutorial. After watching this, I need not look any further! This is the best one I have found...even better than Jessie James Decker's. I love that your directions are simple & fairly brief, yet still highly descriptive. You make it very easy to follow! And your hair looks gorgeous! Thanks again for sharing your tutorial! 👍
You, my dumbass friend, are depressed. Jk idk . But you probably are either incredibly self conscious, so you try to make yourself feel beautiful by doing that, or you have self confidence.
love it - balayage is a nice natural looking way of applying the colour so even if its not perfect it still looks more natural than flat out colouring. Brilliant & thanks
I did this two days ago and it turned out so good! Thank you for making this video! I'm gonna do it again soon to lighten it up more and I can't wait. :) it was more fun than highlighting, and it looks more natural as well. xx
THIS VID!! I did my first DIY balayage using this video over a year ago. Since then, I have gotten more adventurous with my DIY hair colouring and currently am enjoying my DIY pink balayage. Thanks for this!
I love your hair, I just finished watching your styling video too!! It is so effortless and flowy. Thank you for this video I can't wait to try this technique out, especially since I can't spend a fortune at the salon! Thanks again, please keep your updated hair routines coming!
Thank God I came across your video! I just did this last night and it turned out fab-o. I bought the same box (same issue with my brown hair taking forever to lift!) and did tiny pieces at a time. Using the gloves was annoying, so I used my fingers too, although I rinsed off my hands every 10 minutes or so to avoid bleaching my fingertips. Saved $$$. Less than $10 spent!
You need to use latex or nitrile gloves like they use in hospitals or salons (I get mine in the cleaning section of Walgreens or acme). The big plastic deli gloves that come in dye kits suck.
Found your channel from this video and I've been binge watching since! I used this technique on my hair two days ago and have gotten so many compliments since! Than you :)
loved this video! I've been highlighting my hair at home for over 20 yrs and finally see something i haven't used -- the hair dryer!! this is brilliant and a great way to speed the process up a bit. sometimes i sit for an hour in agony waiting. very cool video with awesome results.
Yes, I always add heat! Make sure to cover your hair before you put heat on it though. Someone told me it will dry out if you don't. I plan on using a shower cap :)
well I suppose when you put yourself out there, you cannot escape criticism! Anyway, I appreciate that you did because this is very helpful. I've dyed my own hair with a box when I was younger and then started going to the salon but I'm tired of spending the money! So THANK YOU I think I am going to use this technique!!
God!! I've been watching and watching videos and finally found one that really explains things well and give out useful tips. Def trying it this weekend. Thanks
Your hair is already very light at the bottoms though. I have very dark chestnut hair and I wanted to do this in a silver/plat blonde colour and I'm worried it won't show up or will go a really horrible colour.
Wow! Love the view, can't imagine waking up to that everyday. Jesse James Decker has the same video, I think she calls it honey dippin. Very good technique, I think I'll try it for lowlights. Good for you, great job!
Omg thankyou ive looked and looked for tutorials either they are not very explaining or they are too scary and damaging but this is light and easy ❤❤❤❤
+Ashley Brooke you are so brave. I hightlighted my hair once and it was pretty well considering it was a DIY but this... is different. I want a natural balayage look. I have dark hair.
It came out very nice! However: do NOT blow dry it like this directly! Do this only when you used cling film or foil. Direct hot air will dry the bleach out and it stops developping!
If it is your first time would you recommend doing more strands of hair because you already had your hair bleached a bit? How much of my hair do i cover? X
Finger painting! Never considered this yet it turned out well on her hair. Better for touch ups rather than full balayage:) Thanks for this alternative method!
Hey Ashley quick question....What color is your base color?I love it and I've been looking for something like this.Very helpful video I really want to try it!
Hi great video, i am just wondering how long you keep the product in your hair? I tried to do these at home with a very ligth color and after 35 minutes, is looking almost the same :/
Did you use do it as a touch up? I know that’s what she did and I’m wondering if I did it on my natural hair if it would look similar (I have dirty blonde hair)
I'm a hairdresser and I LOVE these videos because so many girls royally screw up their hair trying to lighten themselves and I make major moolah fixing them! Lol Your hair really does looks great though! 💗
Haha! My hair stylist gets so mad at me when I do my hair myself. That's why I always tell people not to do it themselves when making a huge change! Luckily, I've found a system that works for me. I'm sure you're great at what you do! xx
Hi. wonderful video. but can you suggest what color and brand to use . my hair is really dark? so I just a simple effect highlights, no too light? what brand did you use? thanks so much
Your hair was already light and it turned out pretty great. I am thinking of doing ash blonde balayage, but I have naturally black hair. So, what do I do? What more products do I need? Could you please give me a list of the kinds of products that I would need. I have watched many tutorial videos on DIY balayage and I did not really understand the steps. Yours is the easiest to follow. The only problem is that my hair is dark unlike yours.
That looks so pretty and professional!! I want to try this but with some auburn and blonde strands, so do you think it will work if I buy red and blonde boxed hair color (meant for dying your whole hair) for the highlights?
+Monica Villalobos Thank you! Yes, that should work. I sometimes buy regular hair dye if I don't want that much of a change. Just remember to do a test strand first :)
you made it look so easy, I've done my balayage twice but always nervous and ask someone else to help me out with things and do the back of my hair. But i am gonna try your way now i feel all motivated loved it!💜
Wow, this turned out beautifully. If you're not professionally trained, you have some mad skills. I'm seriously considering doing this on my own, but I feel like I'm completely in the dark in terms of how to select the right shade of blond for my hair (which is maybe just one itsy bitsy shade lighter than yours). I am horrified that if I choose the wrong one or leave it in a bit too long I could end up with soccer mom streaks instead of the delicate contrast you have. Is it just a matter of trial and error? And what brands do you recommend? Thanks so much for your wonderful video!!
So I’m looking to diy my hair color and bayalage, and I’m super curious what color you’d recommend for all over color? I absolutely love your hair color and want to try and get as close to this look as possible. Can you help a Sista out?! 💕
Hair looks great. Although, that wasn't a dye you used. It's a bleach, so it won't fade because you didn't add pigment. When you bleach, you remove pigment. Lightest shades of blonde dye didn't work for you becaue they add pigment. If you already have dark hair, adding any dye won't change the color.
Love your video! I'm going to get supplies to do this today but have a few questions :) My hair is a medium brown color almost exactly like your root color . I want to do an ombré but I want it to also look balayage . Should I bleach my hair and do a hair color ? What supplies should I get if I want it to look like yours but a little more blonde or noticeable? because I DEFINITELY would not want brassy orange hair ! I would really appreciate your help !
If you want it to look like min except a little more blonde, I would just follow exactly what I did but leave the color on a little longer. You will see the color start to change, so just wash it out when you're happy with the color!
As a hairdresser, I would 1000% recommend this to anyone who can't afford a balayage. Just remember small pieces, and good job 👍🏽
+Jai Rolka thank you 😘😘
Ashley Brooke If your hair ever gets too light for your liking again, try a Color Touch toner from Sally's by Wella. Ashley what color did she use?
Ashley Brooke l
Ashley what color u use
Will it work on unbleached hair?
Dear Ashley, thank you so much, I'm a jobless girl, studying and I wanted to try something to make a little difference in my frustrating and depressive life! You really helped me, that too, all for free!

I've honestly never seen such a beautiful human being in my entire life.
Anne R. Tremblay what? Then u haven't seen much
You, my dumbass friend, are depressed. Jk idk . But you probably are either incredibly self conscious, so you try to make yourself feel beautiful by doing that, or you have self confidence.
Wtf? 🤣🤣🤣
love it - balayage is a nice natural looking way of applying the colour so even if its not perfect it still looks more natural than flat out colouring. Brilliant & thanks
I did this two days ago and it turned out so good! Thank you for making this video! I'm gonna do it again soon to lighten it up more and I can't wait. :) it was more fun than highlighting, and it looks more natural as well. xx
what product did you use?
I used Schwarzkopf Poly Blonde M2 Medium. It looks very natural and blends in very nicely!
Kristina Sandnes hii what was your natural hair Colour?
My natural hair color is dark blonde. :)
As a control freak about my hair, the idea of placing my own baylayage sounds amazing. Thank you for sharing this!
THIS VID!! I did my first DIY balayage using this video over a year ago. Since then, I have gotten more adventurous with my DIY hair colouring and currently am enjoying my DIY pink balayage. Thanks for this!

I'm a hairstylist & never recommend doing hair at home , but if you are going to this video is a great way to do it !👍🏽

+Ashley Brooke I would love to see pictures! Tag me on Instagram :) and yes, the gloves are super annoying 🙄
Hi Sweetie... wear gloves next time.
You need to use latex or nitrile gloves like they use in hospitals or salons (I get mine in the cleaning section of Walgreens or acme). The big plastic deli gloves that come in dye kits suck.

I tried this on my hair and it looks like I went to a pro. This technique works so well!
I'd love to see how you curl your hair!
wow! you made that look super easy and it came out GREAT!
+gisselle felix Thank you!
well I suppose when you put yourself out there, you cannot escape criticism! Anyway, I appreciate that you did because this is very helpful. I've dyed my own hair with a box when I was younger and then started going to the salon but I'm tired of spending the money! So THANK YOU I think I am going to use this technique!!
Holy crap that turned out super beautiful
I love the idea of being able to customize the placement of the balayage but too scared to do this myself
Ooooh, I was cringing and thinking: "Wash your hands! Wash your hands!" ;)
I was thinking "why aren't you wearing gloves?"
and gloves and foil
I was confused how she wasn't burnt , bleach is my nemesis in the salon!
God!! I've been watching and watching videos and finally found one that really explains things well and give out useful tips. Def trying it this weekend. Thanks
Yay! Let me know goes 😉
U r so pretty number one , I love ur eyebrows too !! And ur hair looks so professional thank u for this video much appreciated
fantastic video!! We used the exact same technique and same product after watching this video...and the results were perfect...thanks!!!
this helped me so much, being a person who is afraid of salons (they've messaged my haircut before) I can't wait to try this. thank you. new subbie ❤
+Adriana Vonjo Yay! Thanks Adriana. Let me know how it turns out :)
I just want to tell you that you inspire me so much I love you 💗😭
What colour box would you recommend for dark hair wanting to go alittle bit lighter but not blonde ? X
Malaika Harris L'Oréal hicolor x
haylee gibbs what color would you recommend for a dirty/normal blonde?
Great video. I've been doing this myself for a while and it's really cool to see someone finally make a good video to share with everyone. Nice job!
Your hair is already very light at the bottoms though. I have very dark chestnut hair and I wanted to do this in a silver/plat blonde colour and I'm worried it won't show up or will go a really horrible colour.

really pretty. Im gonna try this next week.
Turned out nice!!!! Now I learned a different way to do my hair. Think I will give it a cut first before I put in the lighter color
+Rosalia Perez Great idea. I usually trim mine before coloring also :)
Let me know how it turns out if you decide to try it!
Omg thankyou ive looked and looked for tutorials either they are not very explaining or they are too scary and damaging but this is light and easy ❤❤❤❤
+Viviana Martinez-Pasillas Yay!! I'm so glad you found it helpful.
OMG And they ask for $200 to do this at the salon! 😮
I am loving following you and your videos. I've binged watched you over the last few days :) Loving all the videos!
What product did you use? I cant find it anywhere.. Btw you hair looks amazing!
did you start from the beginning doing it yourself or have you had ombre/ balayage done at a salon at some point?
This was a touch up from a previous balayage I did
omg I want to try this but I am afraid of ending up messing my hair....
+Madelyn Grullon I was so scared before I did mine for the first time 😬
+Ashley Brooke you are so brave. I hightlighted my hair once and it was pretty well considering it was a DIY but this... is different. I want a natural balayage look. I have dark hair.
Me atm. Sigh
Nyledam Oml same
I felt the same way, but I think I'm just going to go for it. Will be trying this out today!
I love how that's an old t shirt for her she should see mine 😂
Literally thought the same... I was like uhhh where can i get that shirt??
the best tutorial on RUclips !
It came out very nice! However: do NOT blow dry it like this directly! Do this only when you used cling film or foil. Direct hot air will dry the bleach out and it stops developping!
+Mara B Ahh! Good to know. Thank you so much for the tip. Would a shower cap work?
I think I’m going to try it . I was kinda scared but after seeing your video I’m going to give it a shot.... 😁😁
If it is your first time would you recommend doing more strands of hair because you already had your hair bleached a bit? How much of my hair do i cover? X
this is the most easiest tutorial i have ever seen. 🤗😊 thanks for this. by the way you look like Lana del rey. ❤️
+Frannz Alcantara haha I've heard that before! I'm so glad you found this helpful☺️
Thanks! Had excellent results. Natural and cool.
Finger painting! Never considered this yet it turned out well on her hair. Better for touch ups rather than full balayage:) Thanks for this alternative method!
Wow , good job! Your hair looks absolutely flawless I would love to try this. I have shorter hair but think the effect is just stunning!
Thanks Amber!
great technique iv just done mine and its perfect!! thanx for posting the vid xx
Looks great! Very natural!
That looks great. But did you have your hair dyed before, or it should be done only with natural hair?
wow! No but seriously!.... WWOOOW!
You my dear are amazing. This worked perfectly! So so so excited I found this! 👍❤👏
this seems like a good technique, i'll try it tomorrow!! also, love your music choice :)
+addipayne let me know how it went!
Omg...I *love* it. I'm planning to balayage my hair this summer and I'm *totally* gonna do it...thank you soooo much
How do you style your hair to get it like this??
She's so pretty . imma try this tonight !
that white stuff on your hand was chemical burn because you didn't use gloves. but your hair looks awesome!
Ahh! That's bad news. I always use glove! They broke because I kept taking them on and off to touch the camera.
This turned out beautifully! Omg! ❤️
So pretty! I just discovered your videos and I love them so far. How to style are my fav I think. Thanks a lot
this was very nice! can u suggest me any colour for my black hair?
Hey Ashley quick question....What color is your base color?I love it and I've been looking for something like this.Very helpful video I really want to try it!
Just what I was looking for. Great tutorial, Ashley! Thank you!
+Sharon Lambert Thank you! I'm glad you found it!
I hope mine stays as nice as yours ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am going to try it ! Let’s see !
I think this is really pretty. Well done and thanks for the advice.
+Zoe Chambers Thank you:)
Hi great video, i am just wondering how long you keep the product in your hair? I tried to do these at home with a very ligth color and after 35 minutes, is looking almost the same :/
Just did this today and it turned out awesome!!! Thank you for posting this!!!!
Amazing! I want to see pics!
I'm sure you're great at what you do! xx
Hi. wonderful video. but can you suggest what color and brand to use . my hair is really dark? so I just a simple effect highlights, no too light? what brand did you use? thanks so much
I believe Clairol (and most brands) make ombré kits and hair color for super dark hair!
I used Clairol (for dark hair)
Great tutorial! Thanks for making it so simple to understand! Quick question...what color are you using?
Clairol Frost N Tip for "dark brown to light brown hair" :)
Your hair was already light and it turned out pretty great. I am thinking of doing ash blonde balayage, but I have naturally black hair. So, what do I do? What more products do I need? Could you please give me a list of the kinds of products that I would need. I have watched many tutorial videos on DIY balayage and I did not really understand the steps. my goodness you have the most perfect hair!love it so much=) I have my cut coming soon, how would I tell them to cut it to achive this look?
+Juliya Caires Hi Juliya! Thank you :) I always say I want long layers with shorter bangs so when I part my hair to the side I have a lob :)
Your apartment looks so nice
Thank you :)
This is the first video that introduced me to your channel! And now I'm hooked and binge on watching all of your videos 😂❤️❤️
Haha, thanks babe! xx
Your photo is GORG by the way :)
+Ashley Brooke aww you are so down to earth ! Can't wait for the up coming video! ❤️❤️
+Ashley Brooke
Thank you!
I found this very helpful. You helped me do my highlights today thank you!!!
nice how you explain it in an easy way with out difficult things
+just my style Thank you :)
This is so much better than my stylist does
thanx for the video, it's so easy, affordable, and chic as hell. you look beautiful, though 👌 I'll try it for my graduation 😻
OMG!!! finally. So glad you made this. :)
+Elizabeth Walker Haha! Doo itttt :)
you made it look so easy, I've done my balayage twice but always nervous and ask someone else to help me out with things and do the back of my hair. But i am gonna try your way now i feel all motivated loved it!💜
I usually set up a 3 way mirror in my bathroom and it makes doing the back pretty easy :) Let me know how it goes!!
Your video was perfect! I'm doing this today now- thank you! May I ask lip color you're wearing? 😍
what kind of product did you use the color looks amazing xx
hi ashley! really nice, i want to diy at home too, what color did u used?
Wow, this turned out beautifully. If you're not professionally trained, you have some mad skills. I'm seriously considering doing this on my own, but I feel like I'm completely in the dark in terms of how to select the right shade of blond for my hair (which is maybe just one itsy bitsy shade lighter than yours). Perfect! Just what I wanted to know. The best beauty vid. ever. You are so fun to watch. I'm officially a subscriber. Thank you!
+Your Daily Jewels - Norah Downey (Your Daily Jewels) Aw thank you so much! I'm so glad it could help
Ashley, good job! can you tell me the products that you used?
Thank you I did this and it came out beautiful.
THIS IS GORGEOUS!! Ugh you did such an amazing job!!
Thanks Sophie! xx
Looks beautiful! I'm going to do this myself soon I think. It's so expensive at the salon!
Let me know how it goes!!
Will try it out next week.
i was really afraid and i am still, but now i it could look good by doin it at home :)))
+agoesaway Your hair gorgeous so I'm sure it will look amazing!
Look's so good. Wish I could achieve the same result xx
Did you make your hair wavy prior to making the video or is it naturally like that?
Hair looks great. Although, that wasn't a dye you used. It's a bleach, so it won't fade because you didn't add pigment. When you bleach, you remove pigment. Lightest shades of blonde dye didn't work for you becaue they add pigment. If you already have dark hair, adding any dye won't change the color.
Ahhh very interesting. Thank you for sharing that with me xx
I am trying this out tomorrow, do you wash your hair after the recommended time.
+Ashley Brooke okay thankyou !
This is the simple way to do balayage I've ever found on RUclips
awesome.. gorgeous! now you should do a hair styling tutorial! such pretty waves! 👍👍👍
you did a beautiful job. I am going to do this to my hair soon.
Thank you! I would love to see pics :)
