- Who Is Ichigo's Main Rival? Ichigo Kurosaki's journey into becoming the mightiest soul reaper and savior of the cosmos was not an easy one, and along the way, he had to encounter his fair share of challenges and worthy foes. Although there was no shortage of enemies throughout the story of Bleach, there were only a few that could be called Ichigo's competition. Among them was Uryu, Ichigo's Quincy classmate, Grimmjow, the sixth Espada, and Aizen Sosuke, the evil mastermind of the Soul Society. But which one of these could be called Ichigo's main rival and overall his best adversary?

My take is that, until Ichigo learned the truth and fully accepted him during the Blood War arc, his greatest and longest-lasting rival was White, the inner Hollow. White and Ichigo's relationship actually fulfills the role of a more traditional rivalry quite well - they have their similarities but also a handful of very important differences which make them clash often and thus grow because of each other.
It all comes back to the 'King and the Horse' warning speech White gave. He and Ichigo are essentially identical in 'form, ability and power' since they share a body as two parts of the same person, but the irreconcilable difference in their approaches to killer instinct make the two of them resent each other and try to overpower the other.
Ichigo is very compassionate and wants to win his fights honorably, meanwhile White, the personification of his deepest darkest instincts, revels in sadistic glee over the destruction of his opponents. Ichigo is frightened by White's savage and brutal nature, so actively fights to suppress him. Meanwhile, White is disgusted by Ichigo's softness and lack of killing intent so fights to overthrow him. They struggle and compete for dominance over Ichigo’s body and inner world because neither will accept playing ‘horse’ to what they view as a bad ‘king’.
They both ultimately benefit from and have incentive to take part in this conflict.
Whenever Ichigo overcame White, he learns a new lesson about battle from him, and can control a little more of his hollow powers, thus growing as a warrior. He is also constantly pushed to do better because of the subconscious threat that if he is ever too weak to overcome an opponent then White will always be there to bite at his heels.
White also benefits from this relationship because since he is the real source of Ichigo's Shinigami powers, whenever Ichigo grows stronger so does he. And every time Ichigo is at death's door and White succeeds in taking over, the suppression of White's full power wanes, which is a process that is embodied by the evolving patterns of Ichigo's mask and the changing forms he takes whenever he goes full hollow.
Hey, Chuck! Have you thought about doing a video on the different Kido spells? In the light novels, it is established that the energy permeating the 3 realms in the Bleach cosmos is called Reimyaku. The Reimyaku in each realm is different. For example, Hueco Mundo's Reimyaku affected Chad into drawing out his Fullbring's true form. And it also provides nourishment for smaller Hollows, so that they don't have to consume actual souls. And that Kido spells like Hado #99 Goryutenmetsu are forbidden because it taps into the Reimyaku of the realm the caster is in. I think it would make a very interesting video! Keep up the great work!
I would say that Ichigo has three of them, one for each power he holds. Soul reaper(Renji) , quincy(Uruyu) , and hollow(Grimmjow).

Sure Byakuya, Grimmjow, and Ulqiourra stand out, but the one always fighting against Ichigo was himself.
Ichigo was that personified, and every problem Ichigo faces, Ichigo has Ichigo solve it by overcoming himself and his weaknesses.

ulquiorra is actually more like orihime's rival, like sure he was fighting ichigo, but his fight with ichigo is more like an extension of his philosophical fight with orihime
I'd say Renji or Grimmjow. Clearly his rivalry with Renji is a friendly one, but Grimmjow felt like a real dynamic between rivals tht hate each other personally but try to overcome the others strength.

Same those two I consider the rivals for ichigo. Renji was the more friendly, brotherly rivalry while Grimmjow is more of the animalistic rivalry where ur goal is to purely surpass one another.
If u want the more intense rival then u go for Grimmjow if u want the more comrade rival then u go for Renji.

@@OTPrOd1gy I'd honestly say that Renji is probably the Yamcha of Bleach. Both of their first encounter with the protag was a fight, both banged the protag friend (Bulma and Rukia) - and in my opinion, Renji was kind of screwed over at times the same way Yamcha was. Both relate with a canine - Yamcha's 'lone wolf' and Renji's 'stray dog'.
Also both Yamcha and Renji are insanely underrated characters to their respective franchises.
I’d say that Ichigo’s biggest and most consistent rival IS himself. His internal struggle with White, Zangetsu, and the other aspects of his personality is consistent throughout every ark. Ichigo’s journey is largely about coming to terms with his heritage, and he’s only able to move on to external opponents by overcoming his very real personal demons. Bleach characters are on the whole rather stoic and brooding, so thematically it makes sense that the greatest struggle for the protagonist would be with himself.

Content like this is what makes me realize how much I love bleach. It's the most different out of the big 3. You would never need to make a video about a rival for Naruto or One piece. The way all 3 mangakas looked at DBZ and they all turned out crazy different is amazing!

I think its a cool idea that Ichigo has a rival in three out of the four races (I don't think any Fullbring has a good traditional rival role, I guess maybe Chad or Ginjo, but neither really fit that role to me) as Ichigo himself is one fourth of all four races it seems fitting he'd have a rival from each race.

His rival is Uryu. There. Both get to fight roughly the elites of the enemy faction of an arc. They often intersect by supporting each other such as against Ulquiorra, Ginjou and Yhwach. I just think that rivals go beyond "I wanna kill/fight you" abd Uryu is more of Ichigo's rival throughout the story in that aspect. Especially since opponents they fight are like a 1-uping relationship.

Since we're talking about BLEACH shall I say that in a philosophical way his main limitation/enemy/rival was himself....which Kubo executed greatly. Everything but the rain arc was the complete developmental point for Ichigo.
I guess, Old man and White was also rivals to see which metode could protect Ichigo, Old man's atempt to surpass Ichigo's potential to make him less exposed to dangers or White's atempt to make Ichigo overcome himself and grow strong enough to become stronger than those that stand before him (that's atleast what I see at the moment when it comes to them)
I think you could probably argue Kenpachi is a rival. Each ark both him and Ichigo get stronger, to the point where him and Ichigo are like the strongest characters in the verse along with Aizen in CFYOW . Plus there is an interesting dichotomy between his selfishness in fighting to Ichigo selflessness.

Definitely would go for Grimmjow here. They had the most fights together, they still had that comparative relationship in the entire series.

Grimmjow is Ichigo’s mirror. He's literally Ichigo but 𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋, two sides of the same coin and they had more fights that made them both grow, so I gotta give it my boy Grimmjow. Also Grimmjow vs Ichigo part 4 would the best thing ever!

Before watching the video I'd say that Ichigo is basically the antithesis to almost everyone in the series and that's why there are more people that can be defined as Ichigo's rival. Uryu is the calm and collected person, opposing the extrovert and fast-acting Ichigo. Byakuya is the noble that has everything that wants to keep the significance of laws, no matter the law or the person that is punished, opposing Ichigo, who wants to "destroy" any world in which laws are against his friends or the people that helped him, especially if the law itself has issues. Grimmjow resembles Ichigo more than anyone by character but his cruel manners brought by the fact that he is a hollow represents the point of the rivalry. So the rivalry is mostly flashed as a shinigami vs hollow battle, but the fact that their personalities resemble made it a fight between who will prevail, giving it more significance than a simple fight between a hollow and a shinigami. As seen in the last arc, a world where hollows and shinigamis are not in conflict might be a world where Ichigo and Grimmjow might even get along. Ulquiourra opposes Ichigo when it comes to feelings of love and friendship, fighting in order to convince the other that they are right and to show the despair/kindness of the world. Aizen is for Ichigo what Ichigo was for Byakuya, meaning that Aizen wants to destroy the world as Ichigo knows it. Their rivalry is forced because other than this and the fact that Aizen wants to hurt Ichigo's friends, their fight is pretty much emotionless.

I agree we need the second stage Grimmjow, but the only problem is, I think that was because of the hogyoku, than again it could work like Majin vegeta, by just awakening the full potential of Grimmjow, instead of evolving him like it did with Aizen.

Yeah I think you guys nailed it on the head with my beliefs of what a rival is supposed to do is embody some of your beliefs as well as their own beliefs and push you forward but also be relative to the character that their rivaling in strength and/or ideology. For all who wonder I kinda want Uryū to be the main rival but grimmjow is a really good rival so pretty much what the video said.

I mean he's beat everyone who could challenge him power and ideal wise, but now being a parent is going to be his biggest issue. But I would say Aizen or Hollow side would be the biggest rivals. Aizen challenges Ichigo's ideals directly by turning his normal life upside down. Ichigo is fighting for his friends more importantly to live a normal life. Aizen literally and figuratively took that away from him before he was even a fucking blip on the map. Its really impressive. Hollow/White is the inner more obvious struggle Ichigo battles because one day some how White will no longer be the horse and stomp Ichigo head in the dirt after all lol. Great video!

I definitely like Uryu as the rival/friend Sasuke like character due to the way he starkly contrasts Ichigo.
1. Designs: Ichigo has bright, orange hair with a black kimono while Uryu has has dark blue hair with an all white cloak.
2. Fighting styles: Ichigo is a soul reaper that uses a sword at close range. Uryu is a Quincy who uses a bow at long range.
3. Thought process: Ichigo is very brash and essentially fights straight forward and attempts to over power his opponents. Uryu uses his mind during his fights, constantly analyzing his adversaries moves and creating strategic plans to defeat his opponents.
I'd say Ichigo has a rival for each arc honestly.

Souls Society Arc - Renji
Arrancar Arc - Grimmjow
Fullbring Arc - Ginjo

Ichigo doesn't have a rival. Throughout the series he never wanted to be the best. So unlike Yugi, Goku, Naruto, etc. who wanted to be the best of what they do, they need a rival to push them towards their goals. Instead, Ichigo wanted power to protect his friends and family.

I think if the story continues into the new Hell arc and beyond, Aizen will become his rival. He's the only currently known (I'm sure there will be other Hell characters, etc) being currently able to throw down with Ichigo. The main problem is that Kenpachi, Renji, and Grimmjow could all jump full power Ichigo together and they'd still get bodied.
Of these, I would say Grimmjow for the currently existing story, as he has no other rivals left (and only sort of saw Ulq. as one). Kenpachi has some rivalry with Byakuya and had one with Unohana. Renji has Byakuya as well.
Though honestly, I would say no one at all right now. Ichigo is like anti-Goku. Kenpachi and Grimmjow _want_ to throw down with him again and he keeps noping out. The guy doesn't want rivals, lol.

When I think of anime rivalries, I think of Goku/Vegeta, Naruto/Sasuke, Deku/Bakugo, etc. For Bleach in this case, I mainly think of Grimmjow for Ichigo

I still think piccolo should've been goku's rival instead of vegeta. For starters piccolo's techniques are different enough from goku to keep the rivalry interesting. Vegeta is also just a less cooler version of piccolo and non vegeta fanboys would agree.

There's room for both I think. I say Piccolo would make an interesting rival for Vegeta at a point, and then turn it into a rival triangle where they train to learn and best eachother.

Aizen and Ichigo weren't ever actually rivals till the final ark. Through out the whole series it was either Aizen is leagues above or Ichigo is leagues above

I think Grimmjow is Ichigo's biggest rival as I feel in TTYBW there still exist a bit rivalry, but I see Ichigo and Renji as friends and companions now. As for ulquiorra I think of him as more arch enemy. Question to all, is Ichigo the kind of character to hold longterm rivalries or is Ichigo the kind of character to move on with his life? I'm not sure.
If we were to look at "who is Ichigo's main rival" seriously, it's no one outside himself; Ichigo's ✌🏾main✌🏾 rival is Ichigo.
Renji was a rival. Ichigo grew up then moved on.
Byakuya was a rival. Ichigo grew up then moved on.
Grimmjow, Ulquiorra, etc etc....Ichigo grows up, then moves on.

A rival is not the equivalent of an antagonist; we can juice it up with shiny adjectives like "main" rival all we want, but it still won't equal a "main" antagonist. A rival is who you encounter that's similar to you in your quest for whatever that reminds you of where you stand and what you need to overcome to get to the next level.....it's not ✌🏾the bad guy✌🏾 Hell more often than not, the rival is neither friend nor enemy.
Ichigo was Ichigo's main rival, everyone else was pretty much just obstacles or checkpoints of varying degrees 👌🏾
Ichigo's main rival was definitely within himself his external rivalries were fleeting whereas his inner turmoil lasted throughout most of the series
Don't think part 4 Grimmjow would work. Despite almost starting a fight with Ichigo in the Quincy Arc deep inside he knew and wanted to be stopped. They're friends now.

The rival Is uryu because there are features appearest for anime's Rivals in uryu, Renji may be More friend. Aizen AND Grimmjow, may be more enemies.

When it comes to rivals in my opinion it should be the one they wanted to fight and would fight again. Grimmjow is the only one he wanted to fight and I could see going to fight again just for the fight.

Top choice for me it’s Renji through and through. Uryu I always saw as more of a Piccolo or a Kurama from YuYu Hakusho kind of character. Grimmjow fought Ichigo the most, but once he lost, he simply disappears until halfway into the final arc and barely has any interaction with Ichigo. Kenpachi and Aizen, in a way, were more so checkpoints for gauging Ichigo’s latent power than an actual rival.
Renji, on multiple occasions, from engaging Ichigo after learning he entered Seireitei, to learning/achieving Bankai around the same time, the time skip with the Fullbringers, and the Zero Division training/getting their reiatsu boosted by Kirio, new Zapakuto, and training with Ichimonji, Renji’s main goal has to keep up/catch up with Ichigo. Of course, there’s also the minor tropes Renji follows for a rival (romantic interest with the main female character, being used to show a new power set or taking on the main antagonist of an arc to show how powerful said character is, etc.)

I wouldn't say ichigo has any "true" rival except maybe himself and to a degree you could also say Zangetsu/Quincy manifestation.
but I think when taking narrative into consideration you could say he has "arc rivals" and they are not always the big bad villain which is why people have so many options for what his potential rival is even none at all.
Uryu is progression rival, he seemingly starts out in front of ichigo but learns that ichigo is far stranger than he thought squashing the rivalry right there.
Renji doesn't even qualify in my book. but narratively he is a "character relationship" rival in reference to Rukia. a sort of other side of the coin, what could've been thing.
Grimmjow and Ulquiorra are both recognize your truest self rivals. grimmjow teaches him to truly began to accept who he is someone that craves battle/power. whereas Ulquiorra shows him that apart of accepting who he is will mean that he needs to overcome the perceived darkness inside him.
even to a degree you could say Ginjo is a potential rival being another substitute shinigami. but this is just another what could've been situation. that ichigo overcomes with help showing that he doesn't have to be reliant on himself, but those around him will help give him strength.
most of these really are different versions of mentors that teach the character a lesson, like how in Naruto many of his bigger fights are not just fights but philosophical clashes of ideal and further establishing hypocrisy in the opponents ideals. but the only true rival we ever really ascribe to him is Sasuke. tho technically as a child gaara would work and as a teen pain works.
in conclusion, I just don't think that Ichigo actually has a rival. almost every challenge he faces teaches him about himself and my man's is a bit hard headed so he has to come to terms with some lessons a couple of times or more. hence multiple fights with grimmjow and Ulquiorra.
this would also explain why ichigo clearly doesn't see kenpachi as a rival, because the lesson there was for ichigo to acknowledge he has limitations, but again those limitations can be overcome with assistance. where kenpachi is essentially doesn't learn that lesson for the entire series.
Don't really think he has any traditional rivals like Vegeta/Sasuke. Just people he needs to beat in that arc to save someone/something. After he beats them, he just moves on to either the next guy or the arc ends. Never someone he has a constant battle with that lasted more than an arc. Hollow Ichigo/himself is probably the closest rivalry he has

Ichigo's "rival" is usually based on whatever setting he's in, but more often than not it's Rivals
I would say he has no actual main rival and it's basically him growing up finding new goals
when he was learning how to be a soul reaper, renji and byakuya showed him what soul reapers can really do when they train
when he was more human uruyu showed him the importance of technique and how simple human tricks can accomplish it
When he was facing hallows grimmjow and ulqiora showed him what a next level danger threat was and why mastering yourself is important
Point is whenever ichigo grew, their was someone new to show him more existed.

Would Aizen even think of him as a rival, there is just too much separating them.
Aizen sentence might last longer than Ichigo’s bloodline (soul reapers would try killing them all, like the Quincy’s, Ichigo’s bloodline keep on surpassing the previous generation, which would once again making a group that want to kill all soul reapers, and attack them, long into the future, maybe they will even work with Aizen, I see him being the boogeyman they talk about for generations.)
Aizen is now a mid higher dimensional being, that do not have the previous weakness of his power, because he is one with his sword, while Ichigo had his Quincy, and hollow side stolen by Yhwach, (but I heard in a light novel, he gotten it back somehow). Also if he gets the hogyoku again, he will become the galaxy/hogyoku Aizen from the brave souls 6th anniversary for the game, making him a being, that there’s no beating, only postponing the enterable.
Also you have the problem of the fact, Aizen could absorb Yhwach, Yhwach cannot fight back or anything, he’s now a being that isn’t alive or dead, taking the place of the soul king, unable to fight back or defend himself, with that improving his evolution, and giving him all of Yhwach powers, and abilities.
Aizen lost to ichigo because he didnt want to kill the one guy that has thr potential to rival him.

Also I do not think he cared about rather Ichigo lived or died, he can always turn Kenpatchi into a hybrid, sure he will not have any Quincy side, but he can always repeat the process that made Ichigo or just use his sisters. Aizen just wanted to be the strongest, but too also too not be alone, in being so powerful.

His sisters are not nearly at the same lvl at all. Aizen is too powerfull now anyway. I cant imagine someone beating aizen at this poing with yhwach being dead.
@@aimanbabahmed7449 Aizen made plenty of hollow hybrids, we even saw him make a group of soul reaper hollow hybrids, also Ichigo’s sister’s, did not have a soul reaper give them their powers, and they are far younger, but shows far more potential since they were already showing a great connection with spirits.
When I said he can make Kenpatchi a hybrid, it was because Kenpatchi is far stronger, and thinking about it, the White hollow was completely connected with Ichigo Quincy side, since Yhwach took both of those, but not the soul reaper side, also you know, both sides fused into one, so Kenpatchi could get the white hollow, and the Quincy side would be passed down.
Aizen already has the Hogyoku inside him, he’s had it inside him since the FKT arc and throughout the entire TYBW arc.
Ichigos rivals are by arc. He doesn't truly have a Sasuke or vegeta in my opinion. Even Grimmjow seems to be a one sided rivalry by the last arc.

In truth, Ichigo’s powers were his real opponent. The Quincy Zangetsu had been holding him back the whole series, nearly killing him more times than Grimmjow could have dreamed.

Ichigo doesn’t have a true rival. He has no Sasuke to his Naruto, no Vegeta to his Goku, no L to his Light. He has arc based rivals. Once Ichigo defeats an opponent a single time, they never fight again. Bleach has a bright future, maybe Ichigo will find his true rival in time.
I'd say his biggest rival is himself because that was the constant trope - developing his skills (zanpakuto) - between him and Shiro Ichigo
