Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across post-pandemic America.

The Last of Us HBO series has the potential to be one of the biggest TV shows of the 21st Century, doing for gamers what Game of Thrones did for fans of fantasy.
All the ingredients are there from the get-go: Neil Druckmann is on-board to write The Last of Us show alongside Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin. Beyond that, there’s a Breaking Bad director helming the pilot, and the return of composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
HBO announced the television adaptation for The Last of Us on March 6, 2020. The series will be produced by game director Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, creator of HBO’s hit mini-series Chernobyl. That’s not all! The show seems like it will have all sorts of details and additions that will not only adapt but also expand upon the Last of Us universe.
Casting has yet to be announced, but many would like to see the original actors reprise their roles. Others are chomping at the bit for Joel and Ellie to be portrayed by Hugh Jackman and Maisie Williams, respectively. Other names that have been brought up for fan-casting Ellie are Booksmart actress Kaitlyn Dever and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who portrayed Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones.
So far, only a synopsis has been officially revealed by HBO: "The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival."
The series will “cover the events of the original game… with the possibility of additional content based on the game sequel [The Last of Us 2].”
Last of Us HBO was announced on March 6, 2020. Given the announcement, the show will likely air in late 2021 or early 2022.
While we can assume both Joel and Ellie will be present, the remaining cast is shrouded in mystery. On March 8, 2020, Neil Druckmann responded to a tweet celebrating the women on HBO by naming a few that would be in The Last of Us series. Druckmann mentioned Ellie, Riley (Ellie's friend and love interest), Tess (Joel's companion), Marlene (Leader of the Fireflies), Maria (Joel's sister-in-law), we can assume that Tommy will make an appearance as well.

I'm very sad that Nikolaj won't be in the movie. I looked at another preview, I'll be honest, it's not interesting to me. The characters in the game were more exciting. When I saw Nicholas, I felt Joe’s character in it, but this new protagonist didn’t make any impact on me. It was very frustrating.😥😥😥

Most producers and directors have no respect for the source material. They always want to change everything to suit their own "vision". And if they're not fans of the source material themselves, it shows. I hope the real series will be good, even if the casting is off.

@@idolme23 I'll disagree with the Netflix suggestion. HBO and Netflix both have quality series, but they both have a ton of stinkers. The thing I notice with Netflix is that they make outstanding productions to look at, whether its movies or series, but the vast majority are completely devoid of writing and content. Most Netflix "originals" are the exact same cookie cutter structure that leaves the viewer unsatisfied.
I'm not saying this project is in good hands with HBO, but Netflix is just as capable of messing it up.
Ah well, guess we'll just have to hope the confirmed cast will do it justice.

Congratulations to whoever made this trailer. The production of the series chose Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to play Joel and Ellie and I don't hide all my skepticism. The actors chosen in this video would have been much more faithful to the video game both for physical appearance and for interpretation.

I'm totally on board with Pedro as Joel, I think he'll do a great job getting the vibe of Joel, I'm just not sold on Bella Ramsay. It takes a very specific vibe to be Ellie that Ashley johnson just had in her voice and acting style. Maybe Ramsay will surprise me, I'm not sold yet tho.

Honestly, I just hope they won't mess it up. I mean I'm somebody who doesn't like the disney live action movies because I believe the originals were perfect on there own. TLOU is not only my favorite video game, but also my favorite piece of story telling media ever. I am excited, but I can't help but get worried.

@@Smasher If you could, would you re write the last of us part 2? There are a few salvageable moments (e.g. Joel and Ellie flashbacks) The main complaints I've seen are the way (not always the fact he died) Joel dies, Ellie doesn't kill Abby, and Abby gets a lot of good things going for her, and Ellie loses everything.
