That experience disparity doesn't really happen with any of their other albums, least nowhere near the level it does with The King of Limbs.

I love this album. Maybe it’s my love of more experimental or repetitive music (which most people tend to not like so much), but Radiohead proves with this album that they can dabble in other genres besides just alt-rock. I also have a deep connection to the album’s themes of nature, which I prefer over the themes of love on In Rainbows. Hard to explain really, but this album speaks to me on a spiritual level, and I’ll def get the boys on the album art tatted next to my Amnesiac tattoo.

Really the biggest tidbits about this album are that
    (1) they relied on looping much much much much more than usual on this record
    (2) a vast majority of what they looped (or at least played as repeating bars) had some sort of organic origin (not as much programming as you'd think for such an "electronic" record)
    (3) aside from electronic music, there was a huge influence coming from Ed (the "oh, that's what he's doing on this song" guy) and his growing love of Brazilian music
    (4) Basically, where a lot of Radiohead's earlier music can be seen as having a huge emphasis on interweaving harmonies, this record is their love letter to polyrhythm.

You will love King of Limbs eventually I almost guarantee it. Especially after multiple listens and watching live versions.
I don't get why everyone describes this album as electronic. It's mostly real instruments. Only Lotus Flower is heavy on the electronics.
Most of the drums on this album are two drummers. They got Clive Dreamer from Portishead to play a second kit alongside Phil.

It's a really stripped down version of the song that features only a modular and a piano and of course his beautiful voice. I'll maintain that the production of some of the songs that have since become live staples (Bloom, Lotus Flower) made the songs come off a little more flat than they do in live recordings. Lotus Flower in particular really benefits from that fuzzy synth coming front and center.

One interesting 'tid-bit' about this album is the fact that most of the music is constructed from samples of each band member which were edited and looped. Thom then wrote lyrics and melodies over the top of the collage of loops.
According to Jonny Greenwood, "we didn't want to pick up guitars and write chord sequences. We didn't want to sit in front of a computer either. We wanted a third thing, which involved playing and programming".
That said, the second half of the album is much less frenetic, more varied and melodic too, so I think it'll be more up your alley.

The live In the Basement version is superior to the studio version, almost like the music was intended to be performed live. It’s supposed to combine the acoustic sounds with the synthetic sounds in such a way that it’s difficult to distinguish the two from each other but for me it’s the live version where that effect was accomplished in such a way where I got the “aha” moment, “not so much with the studio version.” I just thought the studio version was alright.

    • @HappyAppart
      @HappyAppart 4 года назад +5

No. Simplistic versions don't make it a superior version. A lot of people don't get Bloom on the album, but they love the live version. Well, it's because the rhythm is different. The live version strips away the African beat of the studio version (i can even say that Johnny plays it extremely, frustratingly wrong live). But that's what the mainstream ear can digest. But don't call it "a superior version".

You'll love part two, compared to the first four songs, I think.
Radiohead's been my favourite band since I was about 14 years old (37 now). TKOL is easily one of my favourite albums. It still amazes me how this band can be so diverse and still sound distinctly 'Radiohead' in every single song.
As someone else already mentioned, this album gets far more vivid when played live. I've seen Radiohead live 13 times now, and especially songs like 'Feral' and 'Morning Mr. Magpie' are an absolutely hypnotising experience.
Considering 'Bloom', I can really recommend Thom Yorke's solo version at the Electric Lady Studios in which he merely sings and plays piano over a looped piano melody. It's hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing. You can also try the version Radiohead recorded with legendary composer Hans Zimmer. It's called 'Ocean Bloom' and it's used for the BBC documentary 'Blue Planet II'.

Only Bloom truly stands out for me after all these years, and even then I'm not a fan of the mix and think it sounds better live. Thom Yorke's solo rendition on piano (search Thom York Bloom Electric Lady) is astounding.
The second half is where this album shines. All four songs are fairly excellent (although Lotus Flower, like Bloom, really shines live where a weak mix can't restrain it), and it ends on two absolutely astounding numbers.

Interesting tidbit about the album, Johnny actually wrote the program they used to compile and sequence all the samples for the album.

I highly recommend checking out the live version of Bloom by Thom in Electric Lady Studios. It really made me appreciate the original song so much better. Because lets face it, the song is really messy but that version helped me out understanding it.
I also recommend the combination of this album with the 4 singles released that year, The Butcher, Supercollider, The Daily Mail and Staircase. Together they make The King Of Limbs a way better experiencie. The problem of the album is not the sound, the length is.

Radiohead were guests on the Colbert Show for this album and performed an stunningly well performed and produced five set with a horn section. The sound is magical, tight, gorgeous and powerful, and brings the songs to life in a way even the incredible "From the Basement" recordings can't.

The King of Limbs is my favorite album by any band! You will like Bloom when you understand how the song is constructed (which instrument does which part, the layering) after watching the live from basement.
Im glad you like Little by Little, it’s my second favorite song from this album.
The second half of the album is very different, easier to listen and understand. It’s basically four ballads.
In the live from basement they play the whole album plus two b-sides from the album (Staircase and The daily mail) which are as good if not better than the regular songs.
Can’t wait for part 2 and the live version :)
I forgot, you should also listen to the Thom Yorke solo piano version of Bloom, it’s astonishingly beautiful!

If by the end of the studio reaction you're not sure about how to feel for this album's eccentricity and the emotion it's trying to evoke, I recommend you have an open mind on the live version as it will clear that uncertainty and will affirm that this is a very good (if not great) album. It's a grower not a shower.
Ps keep up the good work brother, good work!

This is such an interesting album because people have such different opinions on it. I personally love this album. I was so shocked at the “Little by Little” reaction because that was the one song I didn’t connect with at first but one I’ve come around to. Later songs on the album hit me immediately and I still love them. Even Bloom didn’t hit me at first and it’s one of my favorite Radiohead songs now. I’d give this record some time, though I can’t promise anything because some still can’t come around to it even after so many listens. What a weird record.

This time Radiohead were literally buiding up their songs like houses: starting with the foundation and walls (rhythmic carcas) they were then facing it with bass and guitar sounds. And when the building (the skeleton of a song) was finished, they began populating it with words and melodics. It’s interesting to see how a life in a new house germinates: you never know what it’s gonna be until all the neighbours are in place.

Also, if you ever want to react to some of their live stuff in a short video like you did with the trickster, I HIGHLY recommend Thom’s live performance of Ingenue on the Jools Holland show (4 minutes), as well as Thom and Jonny’s performance of I Might Be Wrong/There There/Knives Out (13 minutes), both probably my favorite Radiohead related videos of all time.
