@@xamp_exclammark I mean, thinking it's worse than Pablo Honey isn't hating it; I'd say it's a fair take, not becsuse TKoL is terrible, but rather because Pablo Honey isn't. as far as Fantano goes, yeah, he seems to have something against it; Lotus Flower and Separator are way too gorgeous to me to make think that the LP is mediocre
They really embraced polyrhythms on this record and combining that controlled chaos with ambient sounds and trance-like repetition played off really well
YES! Separator is so good, one of their best closers for sure. Happy to see this album getting the appreciation it deserves. It’s definitely not their worst; how anyone can put this below Pablo Honey is beyond me.
@@turqdeth I have to strongly disagree. TMB has some incredible tracks for me such as The Mother Lode, Truth Ray and Nose Grows Some, which for me is Thom's best solo track ever
I know you mentioned not doing a first reaction to the basement session but, if you haven't already listened to it, it might be worth it. With two entirely new b-side songs that some people like even more than the rest of the album tracks, live brass, and a really organic feel to the looped drums, it's another experience. It'd be really cool to see your take!
One of my favourite Radiohead projects. Thanks for the - unexpected - positive first reaction! And I found the album to have even more interesting concepts the more I listened to it. Hopefully you don’t grow tired of it.
No way is it their worst album. I do think the studio version is relatively weak compared to the live incarnation, but that isn't so bad all things considered.. Check out the live performance of it From the Basement. It is incredible and elevates the album more than any of their other live performances have for previous albums. I am not sure the studio cut makes their top five albums for me, but the Basement session is easily top three for me if that gives you an idea.
I mean, music taste is clearly subjective because I enjoy this album very much whereas so many people dislike it. Also, I don't mind repetition in music so maybe that's why. I don't need songs to "go somewhere" or have all these different elements in it for it to hold my interest.
This is definitely not their worst album. I'm glad you appreciated it on first listen. It does open up even more on repeat listens, and the From the Basement version will give you an even deeper appreciation of the songs. I think it got a lot of backlash for being only 8 tracks, following such a great album (IR), and being so mechanical with the looping, so it didn't have that organic feel of In Rainbows that people probably wanted.
Love watching your reactions to Radiohead's albums as it is my favourite band, feels like I'm listening to them for the first time with you, love your honest analysis too! Keep up the good work man
I agree it's a great album, the only problem with it it's too short, I don't get why they didn't include The Daily Mail and Staircase in the album (look it up, it's a single/EP they released, from the sessions as the album I think, definitely around the same time)
The album is so complex , they had to hire portishead's drummer to go on tour. It came with an app called polyfaunia . It was like a game , you go to a fractal forest and Mountain world ,low polygones with sounds loops of the album . You have to go to this world to enjoy the album . It is an album from an other world . Very complex to analyse .
Nice 1 Dave, really mature & thoughtful reaction. I'm with U all the way m8, I absolutely love this album & Codex has 2 B in my all time top 10. U're really gonna love the 'from the basement' versions - they're even better than the record. U should give In Rainbows Disc 2 a listen tho m8, there's some cracking tunes on there. Subscribing now .........
OK hear me out, I recently discovered you can kinda relate certain albums / songs to the time of day, this is like an album you'd hear at midnight in a ghost town, then like amnesiac is in a busy subway at like 1:30. Anyone else get this or have I got some weird talent?
The reason why this album was hated on a bit was because it felt short and slight after a 4 year gap between this and In Rainbows. There was lots of hype leading up to this and the hardcore Radiohead fans felt let down by it... particularly the more indie rock based fans. They've done electronic stuff before but there were rock elements for people to latch onto as well. Not here though... I love this album personally and a lot of Radiohead fans have started to appreciate this album more after A Moon Shaped Pool came out and was sorta a bit of fan service perhaps? Great reaction as always looking forward to the other albums
That second half alone makes it a great, worthwhile addition to their stellar discography. I think the first half has its issues (Bloom, Magpie and Little By Little all sound better live and Feral is just too much of an experimental throwaway track for an 8-track album imo), but Lotus Flower, Codex, Ghost and Separator are perfect. Completely agree with your overall "vibes" album assessment.
Man after listening to this you have to check out the basement version. I'm sure a lot of other people have also said this already, but it's for a reason
Great reaction/review. I've always liked this album. Every song on it is really good. It sounds minimalist upon first listen but the more you hear it the more you'll notice just how complex it actually is. Especially the second half. Just because a song doesn't have tons of layering and effects doesn't mean it isn't complex, deep and nuanced. Some of the most complex music ever written only utilizes one instrument. Like Erik Satie's Gymnopédies 1, 2, 3 for example. One of the greatest piano sonatas ever written and although it's slow, and only one guy on piano, it's very complex with the way it was composed, played and also with the deep emotions it evokes. Here's a link if you're unfamiliar with it: ruclips.net/video/FS6o3qFimsc/видео.html . (It repeats in that video but it's the best quality version I've found. All three pieces, that make up the whole, end somewhere around 15 minutes then start over which is why that video is 60 minutes long. I definitely think you'll like it. The perfect way to listen to it is laying down with your eye's closed with some headphones on.)
Here's the thing, when people say this is their worst album after Pablo Honey, they fail to mention that it's still a decent album. It's just hard to rank it up there with albums like OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows. Codex is in my top 10 Radiohead songs and Lotus Flower would have fit right in on In Rainbows.
If you liked this album, you really need to check out the From The Basement session, it's so much better and passionate, probably my favourite Radiohead proyect EVER.
my laptop is getting fixed rn but once it’s done i’ll have pablo honey and the bends on the way! Enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
Did I miss your reaction to "A Moon Shaped Pool" or have you already heard that one before?
@@SR91313 nah I listened to it before I started doing these videos

Hope you listen to Pablo Honey first, which is a better choice, since it's where Creep is, aka their biggest song.
The black sheep of their discography. It gets too much hate and is way way underrated.
FINALLY someone giving this album the praise it deserves!!
That smile on Separator :}
I didn't know someone could be such a good first-time listener.
2:46 Bloom
4:56 Morning Mr Magpie
6:52 Little By Little
8:19 Feral
10:23 Lotus Flower
12:25 Codex
15:01 Give Up The Ghost
17:18 Separator
18:09 karma police
KOTL is the album with the most growers imo.
I think it’s because their songs are so layered but it all flows quite well.
