Very cool that you’re listening to this for the first time with headphones…so many amazing things happening through this album that get missed until you hear it with headphones.
@@davidtollefson8411 One of the great things about seeing these guys live is they recreate all the effects live every show. You can watch Ed O’Brien creating loops and then layering everything together. Pretty amazing stuff.
Jonny Greenwood, the lead guitarist, started experimenting with obscure instruments during this period. One such instrument is the Ondes Martinot, which is basically a theremin with a keyboard, you can hear it prominently on The National Anthem and How to Disappear Completely. Its such a beautiful sounding instrument, I recommend looking up videos of how its played.
I had seen Radiohead in concert a half a dozen times by the time Kid A came out. I was confused when I first heard it. I knew the band was always evolving and hated tracing their own footprints, but this was so odd. Now it stands as my favorite album. Almost a quarter century later, Radiohead still seems ahead of their time.
I remember at the time it was such a change of sound, yet in hindsight it wasn’t. All the signs were there on OK Computer that something like this was coming. It must have blown your mind at that age, it did mine and I was 17.
@@anthonysharps6933 It truly shocked me. My friends and I were into grunge in high school, and didn't want to listen to anything else. I figured I'd just try it out - it made me realize that I had to be more open minded. Unfortunately, all my friends, to this day, haven't changed at all haha.
This was one of the more challenging albums to come out at the end of the millennia. Specially for the band itself coming from the so called best alternative rock album of the decade (90s) unanimously. As a listener haven't heard anything so boundless at the time. It was a shocker! Yet it stood the test of time now I think. Although my fave of theirs it's In Rainbows.
After the success of OK Computer, I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the record company when they handed this in & they heard it the first time😂
This album threw pretty much everyone for a loop when it came out. I already liked a bunch of Warp Records music, and some ambient techno things, so I enjoyed it straightaway. Very Brian Eno and Aphex Twin-esque in spots, and was such a daring move for a rock band at that time.
You are insightful and good at this! Your background familiarity with relevant adjacent music like Brian Eno leaves you far better equipped to react intelligently to an album like this than most other RUclipsrs I’ve seen. Great stuff, man.
Drums stopping for a bar or two was very popular in EDM from the late 80's Acid House / early 90's Rave scene. I've had it explained to me that those high on ecstasy get a rush when this happens. From Kid A onwards, Radiohead occasionally incorporate a few elements from dance music. Thom is a bit of a raver and has been to known to DJ at clubs. Also said he was obsessed with Aphex Twin in interviews.
You can tell at a glance that this is exactly what was in his head. This can only come from not only FU money but FU legacy. 'compromise'?? No need, mate. They couldn't of wrote The Bends and Ok Computer without having the potential for Kid A in them.
I was already a big Radiohead fan when this came out and, like almost everyone else, I was shocked and more than a bit disappointed not to have another Alt Rock album. I still liked it and learned to get used to Radiohead challenging my expectations with every new album. 20 years on, I consider this their finest album with the possible exception of Kid A Mnesia only because that is 3 albums in one, including this one, Amnesiac (from the same sessions) and some awesome alternative versions.
this was the only CD i had in my car forever in college. only used my car for the drive to my part-time job. got me off to a good start of a work shift
Just found your channel and what are the first video’s I see. Ones with your reaction to my fave bands best albums. So right about Thom’s voice it’s beautiful to listen to and so unique. A soulful shyness to it yet can also sound so sinister in some of their songs. Love it! Keep up the good work.
This album pissed me off so much I boycotted them for a year then I gave them one more chance when Amnesaic came out which was the stuff that did not fit on Kid A (but I did not know that) I bought that and did not like that either so I boycotted them for like 10 years. I just happened to catch the basement session for their brilliant record In Rainbows and listened to Radiohead for like a year straight and got in to all the records I disliked and the other ones I missed and now I put them up there with the Beatles and Floyd or Zepplin I think they will probably be the last really great band as the music industry has changed so dramatically.
What an amazing album, to this day I still feel tingles when I listen to kid A from beginning to end. Great reaction too, what a cool dude you are, subscribed :)
The title track I was not so fond of in the beginning but it's a grower for sure. Plus the live version from the early 2000s is nice because it's so different with the clean/unmodified vocals.
I think this is what The Beatles might have evolved into, if they had remained young and progressed twenty years into computers, in an alternative universe! It's so melodic and beautiful.
was it a theramin on this album? i've seen them use an ondes before which both are amazing instrument choices to dial in that signature Radiohead sound we love so much
I can't believe I haven't seen a comment about Spinning Plates. You can research it, but he recorded it singing everything backwards, then they played that recording in reverse to track it. I think...it's been a while but I think that's the story. Fun fact of the day.

The Bends is more of a poppy Rock album with actual radio-friendly songs so you'll probably not like it as much but its definitely a stronger Album than anything in their discography besides OK & KidA IMHO.
