    Some information about Hinderer Knives that was NOT included in this upload:
    Gen 4 XM 18 (discontinued) - Comes with nylon washers, no lock bar insert.
    Gen 5 XM 18 (discontinued) - Comes with nylon washers, upgraded with lock bar insert.
    Gen 6 "Tri-Way" XM 18 (currently in production) - Comes pre installed with bearings. INCLUDES modular PB and nylon washers. Also upgraded with lock bar insert.
    Finishes like "stonewash" and "working finish" are standard finishes, and do not cost extra. However, finishes like "DLC", "stonewashed DLC", or "FDE DLC" etc are NOT standard, and DO cost extra. I got that partially wrong in the video.
    The "DLC" blades in this video are ACTUALLY parkerized. There is a difference between an actual DLC coating on Hinderer knife, and this parkerized finish. Currently, this finish seems to be specific to "Vintage Series" XMs.
    Not all parts are modular with all models. For example, XM 18 3" handle screws will not fit an XM 18 3.5", but the pocket clip will fit on either. Custom parts are usually labeled at retailers. Make sure you're ordering the correct parts for your Hinderer.
    ***More info will be added if necessary***

    I finally purchased my first Hinderer knife. I was skeptical on it due to the price and because I prefer a non flipper. The battle blue framed xm-18 3.5 called out to me, so I’ve now purchased two. Both are spantos and both have working finished blades. Don’t sleep on getting one if you find one you really like. I saw a purple anodized framed one with a black dlc blade. Pulled it up online after work that same day and it was gone. I personally would have no issue waiting for a few months on a special order xm-18. It would be nice to be able to order exactly what features that you want through Hinderer directly. Great video as always.

    Great video! Another thing is that Hinderers seem to retain their value quite well too. Only issue was at around 10:08 the claim was made that only the 3" Eklipse has the tri-way in it. Their "Gen 6" (actually gen 3) 3.5" Eklipses have the tri-way system in them. Now I'm not positive on when he started doing them but my 3.5" ("Gen 6") Eklipse has the tri-way in it & I've had it for a bit now.

    I thought for a long time the 0562 was just as good, even after handling some at a local dealer. After listening to you rave on them for so long ,I finally found one I liked and got it. I have to say you have to spend some time with one to start to recognize the difference between the quality and value if you have carried the ZT for a while. I would highly recommend springing for one if you can, mine has became my preferred EDC , along with a small Sebenza, I've always carried a couple of knives , these two are definitely impossible to beat IMHO for me anyway.

    You cleared alot of things for me... a thing that many reviewers harp on that they seem to not care with Hinderer knifes is the fact that you have 3 - 4 different styles of hardware in 1 knife... people go crazy to see two sizes of torx but Hinderer uses a proprietary pivot, philips, torx, flat head, different-sizes of torx and nobody seems to care haha...
    Might have to try one in hand and see what all the fuzz is about.

    I liked the video. I initially bought the ZT 0562, and now own 5 Hinderers. Although I really like the action on bearings, I have transitioned my Full Track, Half Track, and my XM-18 3.5 to Teflon washers. I have found the action to be really smooth and if they get dirty, you can literally run water thru the pivot and blow them out since these washers are self lubricating.

    I have several personal issues with Hinderer's which stops me from buying one.
    First up the HRC issue with their 20cv (I only EDC M390 knives, or its analogues 20cv or 204p) and how it is run intentionally on the softer side (HRC 59-60) Bohler recommends 60-62 and from all the cutting tests I have seen it hits a sweet spot at around HRC62, and yet remains ductile.
    Running their 20cv at HRC 59-60 basically puts it at s35vn (at HRC 59-60) levels of performance in regards to edge retention and the s35vn will actually will be tougher that the 20cv and will resist chipping better than the 20cv.
    Reate runs their M390 at HRC60-61 (and does proprietary cryo treatments and hand grinding/with cooling processes to ensure the edge does not get fatigued through the sharpening process) and are achieving fantastic edge retention results and have no chipping issues. Why I mention this is easily pay just as much for a Reate as you do for a Hinderer so Hinderer needs to be doing more as far as HRC goes.
    Secondly, the cost of them, by the time you get one here in Australia (exchange rate, import duties) they cost around AUD$700 and to me they are simply not worth that sort of money. For that sort of money I recently bought a Liong Mah Eraser marbled carbon fiber version and in all honesty any Hinderer I have handled hasn't compared to my Liong Mah.
    Thirdly, I hate that many of the Hinderer's have jimping in the landing zones of the flipper area, so when you fire the knife your finger lands on it, I wish knife companies would stop doing this as it is unnecessary and pointless and all it does is annoy many end users.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 лет назад +1

      Hinderer's heat treat is totally fine for m390. The other two issues I can understand.

    • @waveman0
      @waveman0 5 лет назад +2

      @@metal_complex I have to disagree with that assessment of heat treat mate, respectfully. Hinderer needs to at the very least get in into Bohler's recommended range consistently of HRC 60-62, and probably aim for 61 just to be sure they are getting well within the right range.
      Running it soft does NOTHING but reduce edge retention figures. M390 remains ductile at HRC 60-62 and does not become prone to chipping or edge rolling/deformation.
      I have heard of custom makers running 20cv at HRC 64 and it still not being prone to chipping.....
      People specifically buy M390 for it's reported exceptional edge retention capabilities and it simply does not deliver at HRC 59-60, which has been proven time and again in cutting tests done by a multitude of people. It does however deliver that exceptional edge retention at HRC 62, and Reate can get exceptional figures from M390 at a tested HRC 61
      Here, I have one of these knives (Reate Horizon D, sharpened in a similar manner, certified 25 BESS edge, 12 DPS edge) and this shows what M390 done right can do
      ruclips.net/video/ZcjVhrmwA9g/видео.html
      or Spyderco M390 at a tested HRC 62
      ruclips.net/video/bpxTkSY3_hc/видео.html

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 лет назад +4

      Having it between 59-60 makes it ever so slightly less likely to chip. Rick talks about this. It's not me you have to convince, it's Rick Hinderer himself. The guy isn't running the heat treat at that range because he doesn't understand it. It's on purpose. The guy is a long time master knife maker. An enormous amount of experience backing his process. I'd take it up with him. No disrespect.
      Also, he also offers S35VN, (yes, even in gen 6) which IMO is better suited for what the knife was intended for. If you don't like his heat treat for 20cv, go with his s35vn 👍

    • @waveman0
      @waveman0 5 лет назад +1

      @@metal_complex I have to wonder exactly how much less likely the chipping issue is? I would love to see the chipping tests that were done by Hinderer with 20cv at HRC 59 vs HRC 62. I would wager it is very small.
      I personally prefer exceptional edge retention (with the slight increase chance of chipping) as I NEVER use my folders for "hard use" that's what I have fixed blades for.
      As I previously stated M390 is known for remaining ductile at HRC 62 (and even higher HRC).
      Again Reate doesn't seem to have a any chipping problems and they consistently run their M390 at HRC 61.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 лет назад

      Well we won't know for sure unless extensive testing is done. I've seen very little testing (if any) that proves Reate or anyone else who runs m390 at high rockwell is having no issues with chipping. It's a trade off. Higher rockwell = better edge retention, higher likeliness to chip, lower rockwell = less edge retention, less likely to chip. I would wager the exact line of optimal performance (trade off) between the two is somewhere between 59 and 61. The major benefits will depend heavily on application and blade geometry.

    great overview vid! Your lineup makes it look as if Hinderer asks a premium price while using commonplace flat blade pivot screws (?) instead of allen key or Torx screws, which gives a bit of a negative first-glance impression, IMHO. But, the frame incorporates more screws to hold both halves together so it still looks durable.

Carbon Fiber Scale and Blue anodized Titanium scale with standoffs, screws, pivots, blade stop and pocket clip. I could have purchased another Rick Hinderer for what I have spent trying to make the knife to my own liking.

    I’m saving my first Hinderer purchase for when they come out with a Tri-Way 3.5” Eklipse w/ Harpoon Spanto blade. The Harpoon Spanto is my favorite blade shape for sure, but I am kind of thrown off a bit by that seam looking thing up towards the tip.. I mean, isn’t it possible to grind the blade without it? It’s not like he’s going from a hollow to a flat or something... It’s just a flat grind all the way to the tip, yet his knives have that transition line that looks like a seam or something.. If I wanted that hard transition I would just buy the Harpoon Tanto.. Ya know? Just kinda weird I dunno.. Other than that though I LOVE the look of it.

    Interesting.
    The thing I find odd, especially with the Hinderer obsession. If they are so good, why do you keep getting rid of them to get different ones?
    You always say that you have owned "twenty something" Hinderers. How many do you actually keep?
    Why not continue building the ultimate collection of all the different examples, from what you consider the ultimate maker?
    When I am able to acquire something that I consider to be the pinnacle of quality and performance in its category, I don't get rid of it.
    I keep, and cherish it forever.

    Thank you for the video. One thing that keeps me away from Hinderers is that I have never seen a Left-handed model and even the pocket clip seems like it cannot be switched for leftside carry. Do you know If Hinderer makes any models suitable for lefties?

    Late to the party but I just wish there was a model with at least a left hand carry scale. A full left handed 18 would be cool but I understand why hinderer and many others don’t do it. If it’s as nice as you say it is then maybe it’s worth getting one anyways! 😂

    Very nice collection. I saw a factory tour video of this brand and the brand of Spyderco Golden Colorado. This knife collection and all knives of this brand is made in a really quality and clean plant. The supply chain management and the processes is epic. I was shocked to see the Spyderco plant. The plant is a complete dump. Dirty and unorganized. I was shocked. My knife from Spyderco was made in Taichung Taiwan. I have not seen that plant but I have been to Taiwan and I trust that the Taiwan plant is like this company's plant. My next purchase is from this brand; Hinderer...

    I’d rather buy a new pistol for that kind of money. Much more machining and material for the price. I don’t see the value of a Hinderer knife over my ZT 0562ti. I’ve handled some Hinderers and the ZT is just as good if not better imo. To me it’s a brand/image thing for people who care about that stuff. Like buying designer jeans when Levi’s are better.

    I really do detest the whole overbuilt, pyrbar of a "knife" era that knives went through back in the day. I'm so glad that people started remembering that knives are cutting tools first and foremost, and got away from that nonsense.

  • @stringbender247
    @stringbender247 3 года назад +2

    Once I got serious about knives I became a huge spyderco fan boy and owned 20+ at any given time and never gave much thought elsewhere. Then I was in a very bad accident where I had to be cut from the vehicle I was trapped inside and later became friends with the paramedic who did so. The last thing I remembered was him diving in the water,smashing my window out, slicing my seat belt off and then a leather boot before I lost consciousness. In the hospital he came to see me and my wife was hugging and thanking him and he said i didn't save your husband, Rick Hinderer did, then laid a knife on the table. It was a Hinderer XM-18 3.5. That was my introduction and I soon bought one on the secondary market to see what the fuss was about. I'm telling you, I've never regretted it. They are everything I love about Spyderco plus tougher and stronger in my opinion. I've owned 2 other makes both substantially more expensive than either previously mentioned and I'm convinced 4 to 600 is the max on knives as neither knife offered anything Hinderer doesn't other than higher price. I'm not knocking high prices I just firmly believe that the knives I own that were in the 1k range offer nothing my Hinderer's don't at half the price point. Just my two cents. Get one in your hands before you knock it, they may change your mind.

    By the way.. what about the weakness of the RHKs locks? I heard a few rumours and controversy and shitstorm talking about how they are dangerous cause the fail in spine lock tests. I had like seven Hinderers and I never had any issue with any of them .. but there are a few ''influencers'' like Ericas EDC or Neeves and they post a few hate videos about RHKs..

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  9 месяцев назад +1

      Ya it's just people banging on spines. We got away from that in the early 2010s and now this trend has come back for some reason. Any framelock will disengage with enough force. The question is "does this force occur naturally during use?" - the answer is no. No it does not. If spine impacts are occurring, you're misusing your folder. Period.
