My first Hinderer was an XM-18 3.0, which I thought was too small (I am warming to it). Awhile later I took a shine to a Jurassic, which I got with Magnacut slicer blade, which I love. Then, recently, I decided to try an Eklipse. I got one with the M390 swedged spearpoint blade, and I love it as much as the Jurassic! As a matter of fact, I now think Hinderers are my absolute favorite knives! I will be getting a new XM-18 3.5 as soon as I can swing it (and as soon as I can find the configuration I want, with a slicer or spearpoint blade, in Magnacut)…

I have got a xm 24 teflon washer one, i baught mine in the expensive first responders first era.
Got it from a online place in Holland and when i got it it had a bit of a blemish ( the titanium side reeds Hind, not Hinderer)
I decided to keep it, it was this or no Hinderer at all.
But it made me a bit insecure in buyin more.

I’ve been looking every day for months, and I’ve never seen one available anywhere than the secondary market. I’ve even called a couple of the big dealers and they say they generally sell out in less than 10 minutes. I finally just broke down and bought one on the secondary market for a pretty hefty price. @Brian - You have XL hands by my guess. How can you stand using the XM-18 Skinny?? My hands wrap around the XM-18 standard and my finger tips jam into my palm. It's a feeling I hate, so I sent the knife back. Am I holding the knife wrong? I already have a Spanto XM-24 and now I want an XM-18 Fatty because the fit should be about the same as the XM-24. Please tell me your thoughts.

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  3 года назад

Large hands, but pretty long fingers. Feels fine to me. Is the 24 more comfortable? Yes. But not enough to make it worth the extra bulk and decreased performance for EDC tasks. I recommended the 18 Skinny for a FIRST HINDERER. Not as your ONLY Hinderer. As Steven Wright said... "On the other hand... You have different fingers..."

Man, back when I was in my knife collecting phase, you practically couldn't buy a hinderer. You had to go to a show like Blade, pay money to get into their lottery, and if they called your name you would get a chance to buy one. I drove 6 hours to a show to get one and got lucky to get my name called and got a green G10 with coyote brown custom finish on the blade and scale. It was one of the few knives I sold and the price I got paid for my trip and all of the other knives I bought there. Probably a 1 of 1 but I didn't like the 3". Now they're available for sale all over. Looking at some of the used prices of my knives, they've all gone up insanely in value. My Chris Reeve Umnumzaan first generation Wilson Combat edition is worth like 3 or 4 times what I paid. If only I still had my Sebenza Micarta wharncliffe.

Much like CRK I think Hinderer knives are definitely worth it if you can afford it. Objectively, the XM-18 without flipper is my second favourite folding knife behind the Sebenza 31.
I have one major subjective issue with it, however; it's not even slightly ambidextrous. Not only do they not offer a left handed version (unfortunate but honestly not unexpected), you can't even mount the pocket clip on the left hand side without spending $99 on a custom G10 scale cut for left-hand carry.
Any lefty with knives can tell you it's fairly straightforward to use a right hand liner/frame lock left handed (especially if it's a flipper), but if you can't carry it in your left pocket there's basically no point.

I have a recently released 3.5in Gen 6 XM-18 non-flipper fullered spear in M390. It too is my favorite. It can be opened and closed left or right handed. I left it on bearings. I can't speak to how it performs on washers. Left hand closing is just a pull of the frame lock with the thumb and left hand opening is basically putting your thumb and forefinger on the fuller and pushing the blade out, and a slight wrist flip, or if you're good spydie flick the fuller.

@@kdlusmc I'm fully aware it can be operated with the left hand. As I said in my original comment, all lefties have learned how to close a righthand frame lock (although personally once I start spending over $300 I'd rather not have to), and the flipper is the most ambidextrous opening system available, so deployment isn't a problem. My issue is that it can't be carried left handed without spending extra on a new scale to put the clip on the left side. If I'm spending $450+ I dont want to then have to spend another $100 just to make is usable to me.
I can easily operate a knife designed entirely for right hand use, even if I have to spydie flick the right thumbstud, but if I can't actually carry it in my left pocket then I have no use for it.

@@kdlusmc What Geoffrey Pearce said. Nearly every left handed person on the planet can manipulate RHO tools, but for the most part it always feels like we're making the tool work vs working the tool.
Bottom line: I'm not winging it with a hand tool not made for my hand to the tune is $450.

Hinderer knives are great.... Until you need something. I've never seen a company turn their back on customer needs like hinderer does. A replacement blade for an xm18 for years. I dropped it maybe 5 feet and the blade broke within days of getting. Called them and got told they don't do replacements regardless. I'd have to get a new blade. I've tried to find someone who'd make me a reblade and nothing. I've followed up periodically to see if it's changed and nothing. They're honestly a waste of money

The XM18 is a fantastic design. It needs two changes though. And when I say needs, I mean NEEDS. First, change the pivot screw to torx. Second, the flipper tab is too pointy. It needs to be modernized desperately.

I personally don’t think they’re worth it. To me, this is a classic “you’re paying for a name” situation. I’ve handled several hinderers and there really isn’t anything about them that feel special (to me, that’s not necessarily true for everyone). Regarding the “work finish”, I never really understood that. You pay more for an unfinished blade, just seems silly I guess. Don’t get me wrong, I get it, I understand why they’re so highly sought after, I just think you can get an equally good knife for less money, which is good, especially when it’s designed by hinderer himself, like the 0562. I also think Chris Reeve knives are way overhyped.
