    I personally prefer phosphor bronze over bearings. I don’t like feeling the bearings roll or, in some cases, hear them rattle. I’ve got pocket dirt in bearings before and slowed the action way down.

    • @drameday
      @drameday 4 года назад

      Same here. And I can’t imagine bearings being any smoother than say a super Freek or PM2 which are totally drop shut with phosphor bronze washers. I like bearings, but for knives I actually use regularly, I’d much rather have PB washers.

    • @CASTRO45ACP
      @CASTRO45ACP 4 года назад

      I don't really care one way or the other, I like both, hearing bearings rattle though? That's new, that's never happened, I wouldn't say I abuse my knives but I've never had a problem with either.

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie 3 года назад

      Yeah I've owned quite a few bearing knives never heard them rattle?! I have alot of bearing knives and enjoy them but I do tree work/landscaping and have got debris in the action and slowed them down alot. I mainly carry the bearing knives when not at work and my spydercos or something with phospher bronze at work or if I know it's going to be dusty. Also my microtech otfs have failed from small amounts of saw dust and stuff too.

    Bearings are for people who care about things that don't have to do with actual cutting. Nothing wrong with that, but it's like talking about a sports car and discussing how "swing shutty" the doors are.

    • @metal_complex

      I would say its more like how smooth the ride is. It kind of matters... kind of not.

    • @christopher9076
      @christopher9076 4 года назад +1

      Fair enough. I feel like bearings offer smoother deployment (generally speaking) at the cost of potential performance in peak use (side to side rigidity, gummed up during use with harsher tasks etc.). So using your smooth ride analogy, the guy that only drives his Porsche to the supermarket, and occasionally juices it on the highway, probably doesn't care about the potential performance loss, compared to a guy that track races his Porsche. It's one of the reasons I admire Hinderer for offering the tri way pivot. Smooth ride guy, and track race guy are both satisfied with the same car, they just have to change the ride.

    You can get incredibly smooth action on PB washers especially with a pivot bushing ( CQI Kapara) , with that said though my Hation Lite is the smoothest and best action knife I own and have ever experienced.....I can imagine how a larger (heavier) blade with MRBS would feel like.

    I love bearings, but I have one knife that runs on washers that is smooth as bearings. Don't laugh, it is a Ganzo Firebird F761. I uses nylon on one side and brass or whatever on the other. Why is it some are great and others are not?

    I had the thought that barrings can mitigate problems with moderate tolerances or enhance budget models. For example, the barrings on say a Civivi can noticeably improve their deployment and the over all feel of the knife. Having said that, when I think of knives with very high tolerances and production quality, Medford and Chris Reeve come to mind, they generally do not need barrings. I do understand that this isn't universal.

  • @blwngt1598
    @blwngt1598 4 года назад +1

    The most common reason for poor blade deployment that I see is the user cranking down on the pivot (& the other hardware) like it needs to withstand a shuttle launch. It's also the main cause of stripped out threads, destruction of hardware & driver bit heads, & the warping of liners/overlays/underlays/inlays. Continually cranking down on the fasteners can also slowly affect & hurt the overall fit & finish of the knife, esp when cranking down 1 fastener at a time instead of tightening them together bit by bit like installing wheels on a car.

    My Quietcarry Waypoint was a bit stiff when I first got it. I dismantled it and reapplied light oil and then reassembled it with attention to the pivot screw. I was also not familiar with the flicking with the thumb. I later got the WE Banter which is a very smooth knife with bearings. I got accustomed to flicking out the Waypoint.
    I have ordered the KPL and I'm pondering the use of Loctite (hopefully) without sticking the blade.
    BTW I have asked Quietcarry to supply me with replacement washers and screws as the Waypoint will probably reach EOL and the parts will become hard to get.

    Great video. I like bearings a lot, but because I want to carry my knife at work, (construction) I use washers. I just can’t stand the sound of a dirty gritty knife . Drives me crazy. But my fav bearing knife would have to be my ZT 0804. Again love the vids 👍🏻

    You're absolutely right as usual , you did however leave out the OMG effect when exposing say that SNG, or the Shirogorov. Deny it all you want ,but there is a satisfaction factor in the knife world when it is achieved. Jeff is a OMG Jedi.😱💫 ( of course that has nothing to do with pivot function...sorry...)

    Dude that's what I love about the Kizer Rapids. It has that sexy drop down, amazing knife for the price.

  • @IvanMalechko

    As Shirogorov said in one of his interviews, he really appreciates washers and used them in his knives before, but washers, he says, require more precision and polishing to achieve this really high level of smoothness and reliability. So ball bearings not a real improvement but more a short cut and workaround.
    And from my experience it’s really easy to permanently ruin a fancy-shmancy knife with one raw ball bearings by just slightly over-tightening the pivot screw.

Having this as my first knife with bearings, do both the exposed (non-caged) sides face the blade, or away? Or is there one exposed side facing towards the blade, and the other exposed side facing the handle?
