Agree with you always have to use primer on a porcelain tile but I never buy it, sbr and cement for me, also I use a mix of sharp sand and building sand 70/30 for bedding as sharp sand for strength and building sand to help make mix pliable and to create more suction but liking your work tidy bricks. 👍
Thanks Wheaton I’ve had so many questions about primers so I decided yesterday to do a video and pass the boredom of self isolating.. And yes primer for porcelain is a absolute must. 👍🏴
We always prime our porcelain too, such a stronger bond, what are your thoughts on priming sandstone? i personally don't, as to me sandstone is porous and we use sbr in our priming what is a waterproofer and could blow the slabs when theres a frost. but have seen a few landscapers do it. Just subscribed . Quality videos, im trying to get into making a few myself.
Definitely always with the porcelain I’ll use a primer every time. As for sandstone yeh I’ll go down the sbr route too always worked for me. Get yourself a time lapse camera brinno I use not to expensive either 👍🏴
Hi mate. Excellent videos. Quick question mate. Is Porcelain ok to be laid on an MOT Type 1. There are mixed reviews, lots are saying lay on a concrete base. Could I lay a lean mix concrete over MOT Type 1 to a depth of 20mm just to get the best of both worlds or would this be pointless?
Hi SW laying porcelain on type1 mot is the preferred way over here in the UK so ignore probably Americans saying lay on concrete but you could if you wanted but type1 is fine Bed depth is between 30/40mm normal mix not lean. I prefer a semi dry mix myself Hope that helps any other questions feel free to ask 👍🏴
Myself and father in law will be installing porcelain tiles out the back garden this weekend. We have Evo Fix SBR waterproof bonding admixture, my question.... Does this need to be mixed with cement or can it be applied to the tile straight from the bottle? Your feedback would be appreciated. 😀
A cement based primer is best for porcelain I’d go down that road really. I did use sbr before on stone slabs only. No point risking it using sbr I’d say
Hi there tidy bricks. Great video. Alot of people ask me why i prime each individual flag. Now i can show them this video. Thanks. Also never had a come back using this method. When not using the primer had a couple of rockers to re do. Also i make my own primer which consists of sbr bond and neat cement and a coulpe of hand fulls of grit sand stirred up. Is that basically the Marshalls primer. Thanks pal
I've got a 3 Indian stone flags that have come up after I pressure washed. The bed is still flat. Could I use this primer to stick it back down rather than messing with the bed and making a bigger job? I'm going to have to repoint too as washer took loads out. Thanks.
If the landscaper has installed porcelain slabs, and the slabs have not stuck to the slab/slurry and the wet bed mortar mix what should i do now? I am able to lift the slab up and notice that the mortar under is solid. Do i need to dig the mortar out again and start again?
You might be able to slurry them back down but the ground has to be dust free and tiles back exactly where they came from. Have a look at this video on how important it is. youtu.be/ 👍🏴
If you’re laying anything on cement I would always recommend a primer because you then have two sticky surfaces that bond really well together 👍🏴
@@dannyjones6351 hey Danny thanks for watching I’ve done a new video for the primer test check this one out for more info ruclips.net/video/3ecECF8s1go/видео.html 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping I am yet to try this stuff. Thing is with the sbr and cement it goes of so quick sometimes you just forget go to use it and it's pretty much hard. Does this go off slower?
Jordan Leigh don’t get that issue with the stuff I use it never has a chance to go off I’m always dipping out of it. Maybe it’s got a retardant in it too ? 🤙🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping i would advise against buying it. We laid porcelain last week after using it and lot did not stick. Ended up pulling them all up and now have to re lay. Disaster job.
Stegan, you made my day. You have totally confused yourself. Indoor porcelain and ceramic tiles are laid on flexible adhesive, not porcelain patio tiles.
Great tip on using a roller, may stop the apprentice slopping it all around with a brush 🙄
You’ve hit the nail in the head rich 👍🏴
Yh this stuff is deadly as well you let a bit dry your struggle to get it of
You can use a cement slurry to prime the back of porcelain tiles or a sbr coat, both give excellent adhesion.
There’s lots of ways and a very important part of the installation must be done 👍🍻
I did the same thing, I used a cement slurry mix as primer when I lay porcelain outside!

👏🏻 good to know Scott.can you just use sbr bye it’s self or do you have to mix it with cement ? 🤔
You could use it by itself but adding the cement would help even more here is a new video on it ruclips.net/video/3ecECF8s1go/видео.html 👍🏴

Yeh thx Joanne I’m glad it helped I’ve had so many conversations myself about primer so hopefully I’ve got the message out now. Stay safe 👍🏴

Yeh you’ll be fine just using primer it’s stick back down nicely no bother bish bosh 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping great, thanks for taking the time to reply.
Do you use primer on limestone and sandstone too or just sbr??
I actually use the Marshall’s primer for everything these days 👍🏴
Hi can I use cement with Sbr to make the primer what is your advise
I think that should be fine yeh 👍🏴
Many thanks

I’ve done a couple of those glad it helped 👍🏴
Do we need to prime it if it’s indoor
Always helps too double butter extra sticking power but for indoor mmm maybe not needed but if you did it would definitely stick it down more 👍🏴
Do you recommend Primer with concrete paving slabs, or is water enough?

@@tidybrickslandscaping hope you can help me Scott,,, is it ok to wet monoblock edging bricks with water before laying on mortar

Can you use wet neat cement a a primer , ? old guy I work with swears by it 👍
You can yes but it’ll keep drying out all the time and go hard but a proper primer you got hours of time to use it. No point stressing 👍🏴
I mix pva cement bit of water
Does the job

how do you make a slurry primer? can i use cement and any sbr eg Pavetuf Priming Slurry

Honestly making your own is so much cheeper just mix up some sbr and cement with a wisk

Have you ever used pro joint porcelain primer? You put it on and let it dry.
Not quite sure about letting it dry that kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it
@@tidybrickslandscaping if you look it up they have a video on youtube. Says to let it dry before laying which i also thought was strange

The Roman's didn't have primers it's a bloody con
Been using it today sticking tiles to the wall 👍🏴
Couple of weeks and they will start poping off. Porcelain tiles have to be fix on solid base with flexible tile adhesive. So stop soaps people's eyes.
These are exterior tiles and laid on a cement bed

Stoyan Kolev and what makes you think there a indoor tile ? It’s a 22mm outdoor tile and laid on a flexible bed and cemented down

@@tidybrickslandscaping You are 100% correct. My comment was to the other guy who says you need to use flexible adhesive.
