I think The Summer Hikaru Died fits very nicely into the japanese gothic genre. It's set in a small, rural japanese village in the modern day, it's character rather than plot driven, focuses a lot on the interpersonal relationship between the two leads and the tension within that relationship. There's grotesque imagery, body horror, a focus on folklore, and a cult. And it's so damn good!
